Prior to the ring, Mars was unified under a common purpose, out of necessity. Now with all the ring worlds available, they don't need to worry about being under the UN's heel and they don't have any reason to stay and terraform their own planet, when there's hundreds of planets that are already inhabitable
Things on Ilus have transpired in the series a bit differently from how the book represents them. Jim has authority to take over...if he actually uses it... because he's Avasarala's personal representative, and she's the queen of Earth. In the series, the issues are more clear cut. Murtry cut communications back to their own authorities, which indicates he knows his actions and plans would not be approved by his own superiors.
They are also going to the other airlock (the one at the bottom of the ship that opens into the cargo bay) while the guards were posted at the airlock the crew originally came out of up at the top of the cliff.
RCE is an energy conglomerate that has received a charter to go to "New Terra" and mine the lithium there. Because Murtry (and likely members of his security detail) do not even consider the Belters to be "people," they are ignoring the prior claim staked by the Belters on Illus. This is an interesting application of Eddie Izzard's stand-up bit about "Flags."
IIRC they've not been given the mineral rights, they've been given a charter to explore and make sure it's safe... but they will absolutely expect to get the mineral rights as a result, and being there for scientific exploration means that they're on the site already.
20:00 Here’s the thing-no one not on the planet has ANY say. Murtry gets that. Not many others do, or they are unwilling to overthrow Murtry for other reasons, like Wei.
Well and here's Marco's entry. He's a charismatic bloke, ain't he? Remember what Bobby saw on the blokes taking the targeting sensors from the storage she unlocked? And oh yes, it's the Old West, yet to be incorporated territories, no institutions... and of course it has all those nice Italo- and modern Western shots and wide angle scenes with lots of heroic landscapes. ' love to see how you figure everything out - the nuances and all - I mean it's in your professional territory in a way anyway and no one ever doubted you're an exceedingly smart cookie! Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
In the book, Holden's official assignment by Chrisjen was as a mediator between the settlers and RCE. Secondary and more covertly was investigating the protomolecule. I wish they would have kept that official UN Mediator role in the show, which would give him the authority, not that Murtry would give a crap. Of course, Amos trading bullets for booze isn't quite in the mediators handbook.
I know I'm late to the party, but I LOVE your post-video breakdown of who's in charge and what's going on. As always, the divergences between the books and the show is fascinating, but . . . yeah, that pretty much summarizes the situation, no matter WHICH version of the story you're following! Love your reactions to this show. Thank you!
RE 20:00 if you imagine RCE to be a sci-fi version of a British Trading Company in Hong Kong during the 17th century it kinda makes sense. They have limited autonomy from the UN so long as they don't rock the boat and keep paying corporate taxes. Think of Mutry like a Rhodesian mercenary from the 70s and his character starts to make sense also.
From the way Murty/Morty/Murphy is acting he seems to think who is in charge depends on what sort of colony history decides it is. The British Empire used to have Crown colonies where the government controlled stuff, charter colonies like Rhode Island (maybe the Belter's would be in charge in that case?), and proprietary colonies like the East India company where a corporation ruled India until it went so bad the government had to step in.
you've pretty much got it figured. Illus is the wild west and Murty knows it. He can act with pretty much impunity cos of the time it takes for justice or a system of law t be imposed. When he actions do come to light RCE will probably defend his actions to protect and acquire minerals and even if they don't "protecting the companies interests" could make a reasonable defense since that's his job. On the UN side the politicking would probably go on so long to wind up irrelevant in peoples minds and probably written off as cautionary tale ...after all the Belters shouldn't have gotten involved. Holden wants to stay fair and neutral, doesn't want to be there...or anyone else to be there since he has vague knowledge of something wiping out the most dangerous threat mankind has ever faced... but needs everyone on his side to convince them of that.
Imo the difference between a confident person, they believe in themselves and a arrogant person believes they are superior. Holden is confident is himself, and Murty is arrogant.
Great reaction! His name is actually pronounced Mur- tree spelled Murtry. Amos intentionally mispronounced it. Amos used himself as a distraction to help Naomi escape. Bobbie really getting into an absolute messy situation! Avasarala is playing election politics! Marco indeed does have a gift of gab! Drummer's thinking is actually sound but is sge right? Looking forward to the next one!
Why would the people of Mars remain focused on the terraforming effort when there are 1300 new worlds, beyond the Sol-Ring, that are already habitable for humans?
Exactly. The united states has had several land rushes. Line up the space ships and allow them one at a time to travel and claim a ring for a faction(Mars, Earth, Belt).
There is , but people who have been oppressed for so long tend to be sceptics, especially towards people they see collaborating with their oppressors. Unfortunately we have real life examples of these.
Communications link is pretty fast. There are through-ring relays set up. So speed of light to relay (minutes? hours?) then speed of llght from Sol relay to Earth. Well within a day. MASSIVE SPOILER BELOW, but Anna might want to read. --- Here the fourth player is pretty much identified. It's a major faction of the Martian military. Martian shipyards have been leaking for a long time, led from the top of the Navy hierarchy. The Fourth Man (movie pun) has been building Martian military ships but not telling the civilian govt. E.g. the mystery ships that took out the ice hauler and Mars' flagship. The Fourth Man is using Marco as a distraction, giving him upgrades and even ships to make it look like a Belter operation. In the final assessment, Marco is charismatic as fk but smart like a box of rocks.

I saw this scene with Naomi using the Roci's PDCs and could not help but remember Drummer's comment, "Now I see why you don't have to carry a gun."
On New Terra, gun carries you.

In a temp controled environment (Dome), like on Mars, you could grow the plants used to make Tequila.
And potatoes for Vodka, corn for Whiskey(sour mash)... etc. lol
13:40 very sutblte detail, the guys at the gate are blown away from the force of the PDC shots
They are also going to the other airlock (the one at the bottom of the ship that opens into the cargo bay) while the guards were posted at the airlock the crew originally came out of up at the top of the cliff.
I just noticed that all my favorite episodes are the ones where Amos is shirtless. lol
Believe me, you're not alone!

Not targeting sensors. Tight beam encryption modules used for point to point communications.

Of course, they have tequila on Mars. Humans can build a still anywhere, and agave does well in arid climates.

Don't forget Marco.

Well, I'm sure this Marco guy won't be a problem going forward...
if only they had spaced him right then........ technically the rest of history is Drummers fault right!?
15:07 there’s not

In my head canon, Amos is a high functioning sociopath.

This is an awful spoiler. What do you get out of doing this? Don't be a jerk. Delete it.
