Plus, it also needs to be emphasized that life in the Belt is brutally hard; Ganymede was the single largest source of food for the Belt, and it won't be anywhere remotely close to operating capacity any time soon. Oxygen is expensive, water is expensive, food is now astronomically expensive. To have potentially 1300+ worlds just sitting there with the UN and Mars slowly putting together colonization ships with plentiful supplies (in addition to the Belters who have scraped together the same) is driving a lot of people to desperation and extreme tactics, such as piracy.

Landfall with Naomi finally taking steps on a planet was such a powerful, heartwarming moment. I teared up, big time. Fun Fact - During the promo for S4, Amazon had a "Landing" experience, filled with actors and an alien landscape, where you were on a UN dropship (that DIDN'T get blown up) sent to quell to Belter settlers that managed to slip through the Ring. It played out almost exactly how it did in the show. It was soooo much fun. I was supposed to stick with the UN but I sided with the Belters (OF COURSE). I've still got the little trinket one of the villagers gave me, I dunno if I means something, but it makes me smile whenever I look at it.
I love the scene of Naomi experiencing a planet and gravity for the first time. It reminds me of the scene where Bobbie sees the ocean. Just a really cool and pure moment of sci-fi
I still feel you guys are too hung up on the Protomolecule. That was just the aliens version of smart cement - sent out billions of years ago with one purpose, set up a ring so that the aliens could use it to go to a new world without having to travel all that time/distance. It finished its mission (The Work!) and now no longer exists except for one piece on the Roci. But what happened to the Builders?
Recall when Holden and Chrisjen are looking at the structures on Illus and one of them says 'that looks like protomolecule tech'. To me, the term 'protomolecule' starts to become a generic term for 'Builder technology', which means something super advanced, possibly self aware and with its own agenda, and indifferent to human concerns.
I've seen more than a few reactions to the Expanse and GoT and it's surprising how many reactors that doesn't recognize the actor considering he has a very distinct face imo :) .
Here we go! 😍 I'll be re-watching S4 along with you guys! I wish I hadn't binged it all in one go the first time around but what is self control? 😂 Here's me, waiting for about a year only to burn through 10 episodes overnight. Thankfully, these reactions now get me through the wait for S5. Also, if anyone would be interested in an Amos edit, I have one on my channel (spoilers for S1-4).
I think I watched it all in one day. I made cucumber sandwiches in the afternoon and had lasagna at night. Best day ever! I hope they space season 5 out over several weeks. They are doing that for season 2 of The Boys. Would love to have a weekly roll out for Expanse.

Poor Steven, keeps hoping to see aliens like some cheap sci-fi show. Not here, bud. The creators of the proto-molecule were killed off millions of years ago, which is why the UN probes found no life signs as such and why proto-Miller keeps trying to 'phone home' to find out why no one answers. Kinda sad. Still, the Western vibe and Amazon money give this season a different look and feel all over again as we build up to the events of books 5 & 6, the next season(s). Also worth a shout out to the music this season. Clinton Shorter did an amazing job! Just loved Naomi's emergence from the Roci this episode. Sound and camerawork A+. Soundtracks on Spotify.
Did you notice the postures of Holden, Naomi, Alex, and Amos as they were walking under the planetary gravity? And Ashford attacked a Belter ship that was pirating a UN supply ship.
Although it has been mentioned many times in the first three seasons that pirate ships patrol The Belt (and factions of pirates with armed ships presumably are the main factions of a very politically splintered Belt), this is the first time you actually get to see Belter pirates in action. They do what pirates do: waylay ships and threaten to kill everybody on them if they don't stand down and surrender their cargo. With Belters always short of everything, it is pretty easy for the pirates to view themselves as Robin Hoods rather than ruthless felons. But there is no reason for anybody to sympathize with their predation of the ships lined up to go through The Ring once the government OK's it.
It isn't the atmosphere that Naomi can't cope with but the gravity. Naomi has lived in at most 1/3g all her life and Illus is a planet of comparable size to Earth. Remember that Belter Crisjen tortured way back in S1E1.
Nothing has changed, Earthers are still calling the shots on who can explore and settle on new worlds. Ashford isn't keen on playing mall cop for them. This season has been described as the beginning of Act 2 of 3 of the series.
And to add on to that, its just another example of how being jerks to each other makes things that much difficult. If Earth could have played nice things would have been vastly different for everyone. Oh well...
OMG Nikki & Steven I am so ahead of you....Since you two really got interested in the show by watching your awesome reactions to this extraordinary fan favorite show.... This season is great in so many ways. Lot's of goodies to look forward to. while watching this season I highly recommend listening to the soundtracks by Clinton Shorter. lovely stuff
Well, nobody said inhabited, habitable worlds... As you see, something seams to be alive there, but civilization is gone. Holden said it in season 3 too. Everybody experience blue stuff when passing trough one of rings... but maybe you had a good observation. Trying not to spoil... let's just say something about it may happen... But when and what? However, major plot (it is clear now) is on Illus. They are also, Bobbie plot, Avasarala plot and Ashford (and Drummer) plot. Some is needed, some is setup for later... But it is as usual in this show - you never know what from earlier they are going to use. Maybe you find this season a little bit calmer (after season 3 everything appears slower :) ). But this is great season... A lot of people said that book 4 is their at least favorite book. But the book is maybe crucial - very important book - and with a lot thing they are playing long run... One more thing - authors wrote every book in different style... They characterized this one as space-western. And I totally agree.
Steven - What a hell of a start to a season that was! Uh, yep. I love this season more each time I see it. 10 episodes. No filler, as usual with the Expanse. They don't waste anything do they?
There was a character re-cast with a new actor for season 4 that I guess probably pops up next episode. If you find yourself wondering "Wait who is this guy and why is he acting like he . . . " then that's the one. I think it was confusing and jarring for everyone for a hot minute.

Warning! Contains spoilers for all books even tho I tried to keep it very vague! @toncica im pretty sure its supposed to be 3 duologies and 1 trilogy. The first two books are about the mystery of protomolecule and how the struggle to control it creates human conflict. The 3rd and 4th book continue the theme of mystery around the PM but they are more about exploring the protomolecule and its origin on a deeper level. 5th and 6th book are themed around how the discovery of alien life and the access to new worlds challenges the status quo in the solar system and how it affects the system in general. The final three books is supposed to be the finale of the series and it is kinda like a classic space-epic where the heroes of the story are fighting against a powerful and evil opponent.
@@forel9573 Thank you. I was surprised because I have always heard that book four is considered a stand-alone story and the least favorite among fans. Apparently they did season four a bit differently and included more material than is in the book.
The books actually work better as a duologies. So, the protomolecule engineering duology, followed by the ring and the planet (protomolecule ruins) duology, followed by the Marco inaros duology, and finally the Laconia duology. The last one is a standalone finale.
Funny thing about Avasarala, when she was first introduced in the books she was foul mouthed to hell and back like you saw in this first episode. The first few seasons they had to really pull back on her attitude because it was on cable, you can't be saying F you on the SYFY channel. Season 4 however, was produced and aired on Amazon Prime, so they were finally able to allow Avasarala to act more like her book counterpart.
Chrisjen didn't send the Roci with the express purpose to get the Belters out. She said: check out the protomolecule, see if its active/a threat, and if it is, THEN get the Belters off of Ilus.
Mars is undergoing a massive disarmament following the peace treaty with Earth. Hence why Bobby took a job dismantling these warships, after being discharged from the navy for helping Holden in season 3 (and getting two marines killed).
season 4 I binged in a day when it was released, I can't wait for season 5. I love watching you guys react its like seeing it for the first time all over again :)
The book this season was based on re-introduced Miller's partner on Ceres (Havelock) as a major supporting character. No idea if the writers wanted to do that in the show but it was a moot point as the actor who played him in season one (Jay Hernandez) was busy starring in the Magnum PI reboot.
14:20 As far as I remember, in the books, holden had full-on visions (similar to the first one in how vivid they were) most of the times he went through the ring, and those happened only to him. But this thing that they showed is not a full-on vision, this is another thing that happened to him besides the visions. So this is just my speculation, but I'd say that *that* specific thing, that shadowy blob, I think everyone would be able to percieve that, IF a) they went through the ring slowly enough, and b) they kept their eyes open, and paid attention. Except nobody really has any reason to, same as you don't take your time examining a door frame each time you go through the door. Because notice how most of the time, everyone just goes through the rings, but the roci always takes this extra time when it literally flies at the speed of just like 0.1 meters per second or so. I don't think it was ever explicitly mentioned even in the books, but I always assumed holden made intentionally them to always go through the rings extra slow.
Anyone remember who that Irish guy that went with the Belters to the new planet was from Game of Thrones and he was talking with Holden before landing?
1:00 You forgot to mention The Ring Builders and that which killed the Ring Builders may still be out there. At the very least, the p-molecule has its "work" to do and communicates very clearly the consequences of getting in its way.
You compared New Terra to Iceland from Vikings, which is kind of funny since one of the actors "lived" in both places. Kris Holden-Ried is the actor (Coop in Expanse/Eyvind in Vikings) is a resident of both colonies.
It's not that "the protomolecule is still doing something". I mean, yeah, it is, obviously, otherwise Miller wouldn't be alive anymore, but the main point is... it's the basic building material that those aliens who are now all gone have been using. We have concrete and metal, they had protomolecule.
it was a nod to the fans the writers have added in a couple things like that to the show like naming the bobbies sister in law Rana after the Normies reactor of the same name
Some of the Belters can apparently make the transition to being Inners, or planet-dwellers, so they want to go through the rings to visit the other planets, like Ilus. The ones who we see on Ilus are the survivors. Other Belters are fixed on staying Belters, or they have no choice because their biology is compromised. So divisions remain, and bitterness. Earth is still viable, just. The real shock is Mars. Who needs dead old Mars when there are possibly 1300 new worlds out there?
Bobbie wasnt suposte be in this season cause of the book, but sense they have Bobbie later books/seasons they decided to make her own storie on mars to have her not be forgotten.
Every one of the rings was created by the protomolecule being sent to those star systems by the ring builders. The protomolecule takes over whatever nascent life is on a planet and repurposes it as raw material to build the ring. This most likely prevented any sentient life from developing on any of the planets in any of the star systems that has a ring. The only reason that our solar system, Sol, was spared is because Phoebe was intercepted by Saturn and the protomolecule never reached earth to complete its purpose until the show begins. Add to that, once a ring is open to a new solar system, the ring builders probably went through and took over further preventing any sentient beings from evolving. Bottom line, the ring builders are now extinct and whatever killed them might still be out there.
I think it's also because she's more frustrated. She's in the position she never wanted to be, an elected position where she can't "get shit done" the way she could before.
Remember what Holden said: "We are in a graveyard... We need to get out of this place and never come back." There was an advanced civilization there that spanned 1300+ solar systems. They launched protomolecule at our solar system eons ago. Then something killed them. Expanse does a superb job technology wise. We can imagine what humanity would achieve in next 200 years. Protomolecule builders were significantly more advanced. They managed interstellar travel, they were able to build the hub which is a piece of technology still perfectly functional eons after it was built and anyone charged it's batteries. They settled small part of the galaxy and there are some seriously weird things out there. Even Illus is... Weird... Quite like Earth but not really. :) So on the edge of what we are even able to comprehend. Just barely in the context we can understand. Then something killed them... Something that's completely out of context of our understanding.
The Belters have settled a colony on Illus and have been mining the Lithium there, only to have an Earther Corporated vessel has arrived with a Charter from the UN, and so they believe that they are the only ones who can mine the Lithium. After all, the world is not big enough for the settlers and the corporation.
@@dwnkaomwn3953 Certainly. Just wanted to make sure that they don't head in a wrong direction from a minor but crucial misunderstanding of terminology. No spoiler implied. There are things discover this season.
It's really hard for the belters to play ball they're desperate. The inners have comfortable home planets they can just sit there for a long time and nothing bad will happen to them. Belters have already suffered long enough and finally, the universe offers them a second chance.
Drummer made a great point that in 2 generations the planet side Belters would be no different than the Inners. Since not all Belters can survive in gravity it would fracture their culture, and I would imagine that the space bound faction would be exploited by the planet side one and considered inferior.

I love this season and live for your Expanse uploads!!
To me, the term 'protomolecule' starts to become a generic term for 'Builder technology', which means something super advanced, possibly self aware and with its own agenda, and indifferent to human concerns.
sharinel... You forget that Fred Johnson has the sample from Naomi.
"That's just a stab in the dark." Ha! Truer words were never spoken.
Yeah, haha.
Those were some pissed off dragonglass dorito chips.
Naomi’s first steps outdoors sans suit...ever! A fantastic moment.

I've seen more than a few reactions to the Expanse and GoT and it's surprising how many reactors that doesn't recognize the actor considering he has a very distinct face imo :) .
@@Slaskhask Well to be honest, he was there for like 3 episodes in GOT. But he is a great actor! That accent alone is hilarious!
@@ramiabdo5953 He's a fookin' legend... A FOOKIN' LEGEND!!!
@@russt9478Cucumber sandwiches and lasagna to complete the binge! Nice :D
I hope for weekly releases too. Plus I think that the show would greatly benefit from it.
@@ranialian8537 LOL. Thanks.
Oh yeah. Weekly helps build word of mouth and community and for some on fan groups keeps the spoilage down a little.
Binging is fun, but within 24 hours... The show is over and that excitement is over. Wish I could force myself to watch once a week.... But it's not going to happen.
@@russt9478 My thoughts exactly!
Billions*
For Nikki. Ilus was filmed in a canadian quarry, somewhere near Toronto.
Oh well...
Just a clarification: 1300 habitable systems...not 1300 inhabited systems. :)
OMG Nikki & Steven I am so ahead of you....Since you two really got interested in the show by watching your awesome reactions to this extraordinary fan favorite show.... I am so sorry I couldn't wait I binge watch the whole 4th season of The Expanse which is the best season I ever watched. Since the show moved to Amazon the effects became much better and the set locationis out of this world. So glad you guys paid attention because the story that was in past seasons will come back to light in this one. Atmos and Christjen are my favorite characters and I wish to hang with both of them 😂😂😂 plus Naomi's hair is very amazing. Oh btw the way this season doesn't have a mid-season just a straight stories from Book 4. THE SHOW WAS PICK UP FOR SEASON 5 and the fans really love the 5th book 👏🏾❤👍🏾!!!!
Another great reaction. “That’s a NO from me,” and “I did write that down” were fun moments!
Killing Commander Mormont of Night's Watch was rough enough, now we have to watch him here..... I don't get warm fuzzies. THE NORTH REMEMBERS :) lol
Before being Karl Tanner from GOT, he was (and always will be for me) Owen Harper from Torchwood
He killed Craster to start the mutiny, but he isn't the one who killed Mormont. It was that dark haired rapist fuck who traveled to the wall with Jon and Tyrion who's name I don't recall at the moment.
@@axlm.808 he was also a bad guy in TURN on AMC, if u ever saw that.
@@williamroper5422 I wasn't getting into the details. I do know who did the actual killings, but he helped instigate and lead the mutiny and etc with Bran and Co... My point was his presence is always a dreaded feeling.
@@Ashley_e Yeah the only time I remember that actor not playing an asshole was Pacific Rim where he was a funny nerdy scientist dude.
You know the episode is good when he says “Holy Shit”
Or '' Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude''
You know the show is good when he says that virtually every episode. :D
Tense is the word. Every episode this season. Tense AF.
You ain't lying. S4 is the tensest season yet.
Naming the character wouldn't really be a spoiler. It's Christian's husband.
@@krashd Actually I consider all of that a spoiler. I'm not a Mod though.
Dear Nikki and Steven! I so much love your comments and great editing! You probably don’t read all the comments or have the time for watching every recommendation. But if you love BB and GoT there’s one under the radar Korean show on Netflix I can't possibly recommend enough. KINGDOM. Just watch the first 10 minuites of it, this is such a masterpiece! Vidar
The "SOL Ring" is essentially The Sun Ring as SOL is Latin for sun. Kinda like Stargate 🤣.
And New "Terra" means New Earth in portuguese
@@reulingue8151 nope, also Latin in origin.
Ok, i din't know that, tnks. But Terra still Terra in portuguese
@@reulingue8151 Portuguese is a Romance language (alongside Spanish, Italian, French, and Romanian), whose roots all come directly from Latin. It's also "terra" in Italian, "tierra" in Spanish, "terre" in French, and "teren" in Romanian.
Well, it's specifically referring to our sun, Earth's sun, which is named Sol IRL (it's not a reference to Stargate), to distinguish it from all the ring gates to systems other than ours.
Fyi: this is the start of the second trilogy from the books. So its pacing will be more akin to season 1. :-)
First time I'm hearing about trilogies. It would make sense since it's supposed to be nine books. Can someone else confirm?
I CAN confirm that three trilogies is, in fact, 9 books.
Did you see the Screaming Firehawks bar on Mars..... Cool shout out to the fans. Respect "the expanse" show runners
Welcome to the wild wild west. The 4th season from Amazon actually lets Crisjen be a little more like the book version: able to curse like a sailor.
That first survivor from the drop-ship crash is from GoT. He's the Night's Watch guy that killed the Lord Commander. Calls himself a fookin legend.
He also plays an interesting character in the series, TURN.
@@sci-fihorizons2867 I assume he plays a bad guy in that as well? He's just got the face for playing a jerk.
Chrisjen didn't send the Roci with the express purpose to get the Belters out. She said: check out the protomolecule, see if its active/a threat, and if it is, THEN get the Belters off of Ilus.
I’m finally done binge watching all their previous reactions so I can watch this one as it comes out and it feels so good
you guys are amazing..I love the chemistry you have and your comments keep em coming
Mars is undergoing a massive disarmament following the peace treaty with Earth. Hence why Bobby took a job dismantling these warships, after being discharged from the navy for helping Holden in season 3 (and getting two marines killed).
You could right now write entire plot of season... All of this will be explained... Why spoilers?
season 4 I binged in a day when it was released, I can't wait for season 5. I love watching you guys react its like seeing it for the first time all over again :)
Quick note - they said HABITABLE, not INHABITED planets.
The book this season was based on re-introduced Miller's partner on Ceres (Havelock) as a major supporting character. No idea if the writers wanted to do that in the show but it was a moot point as the actor who played him in season one (Jay Hernandez) was busy starring in the Magnum PI reboot.
How are humans going to handle colonizing 1300 new systems?
Badly. The answer is, we will handle it badly.
Not as bad if they cooperate.
@@dwnkaomwn3953 Human tribes have a really bad record of not cooperating with other human tribes.
"Don't piss off the planet or it will fucking attack you" oh you have no idea
Soooo what’s the point then trying to terraform Mars , if there are 1300 habitable planets out there?
The set of the Illus exteriors was a quarry in Ontario.
It was a great start to season 4. Buckle up guys.
1:00 You forgot to mention The Ring Builders and that which killed the Ring Builders may still be out there. At the very least, the p-molecule has its "work" to do and communicates very clearly the consequences of getting in its way.
2:30 Oops, I spoke too soon LOL
"You laughed about me about the aliens."
And we still do xD
You compared New Terra to Iceland from Vikings, which is kind of funny since one of the actors "lived" in both places. Kris Holden-Ried is the actor (Coop in Expanse/Eyvind in Vikings) is a resident of both colonies.
Now that we're at season 4, they really need to watch Expanse Crack and Expanse Crack 2! (about 6 minutes each)
Yes! Search them on UA-cam.
It's not that "the protomolecule is still doing something". I mean, yeah, it is, obviously, otherwise Miller wouldn't be alive anymore, but the main point is... it's the basic building material that those aliens who are now all gone have been using. We have concrete and metal, they had protomolecule.
This episode and indeed all of new terra was filmed on location in Ontario, Canada
To be fair, I see where Amos' question regarding Avasarala's clothes came from - they *are* gorgeous.
it was a nod to the fans the writers have added in a couple things like that to the show like naming the bobbies sister in law Rana after the Normies reactor of the same name
@@Ugnutz I had no idea they did that, Rana must feel like a queen! She's my favorite normie, so good for her.
My husband was watching this show waaaaay before I was. This was the season that made me watch the previous ones.
Burn Gorman (crash survivor) was also in Torchwood. I wonder what his character will be in this?
Season 4 here we go!
Love the way yall make your intro like the intro of the show you are reacting to.
Bobbie wasnt suposte be in this season cause of the book, but sense they have Bobbie later books/seasons they decided to make her own storie on mars to have her not be forgotten.
Nikki: "I'm using that by the way"....LMAO
Great reaction as always and Steven does a hell of a job at editing..Kudos 👍👍👍
You will notice Chrisjen using a lot more f-words because season 4 is on Amazon so no language restrictions. LOL. You get to hear the real character.
I think it's also because she's more frustrated. She's in the position she never wanted to be, an elected position where she can't "get shit done" the way she could before.
She's still quite restrained compared to the books.
18:04 Nikki be like 'I may use that in the future lets jot that down'.😂🤣 Gotta love Chrisjen.
We used to build cars that function for 50+ years before. Now we build cars that function for 3 years. Do not put your hopes on humanity.
Every time I watch this season I like it more and more. Much smaller stakes than season 3, but fanatic storytelling.
Did you notice how Camina is now wearing an OPA uniform when talking to Ashford?
She's definitely caught his vision.
17:34 '' You are a bastard.... a daughter effing wilding bastard '' I can't ever see this guy's face without reciting these words.
Habitable...meaning something or someone could live there based on human standards... Breathable Air,Sunshine etc.
The Belters have settled a colony on Illus and have been mining the Lithium there, only to have an Earther Corporated vessel has arrived with a Charter from the UN, and so they believe that they are the only ones who can mine the Lithium. After all, the world is not big enough for the settlers and the corporation.
This season I binged in 2 sessions.
The tension doesn't ease up
Habitable new worlds. And habitable means that they can sustain life, not necessarily that they are inhabited by intelligent aliens.
But it could be or could've been.
@@dwnkaomwn3953 Certainly. Just wanted to make sure that they don't head in a wrong direction from a minor but crucial misunderstanding of terminology. No spoiler implied. There are things discover this season.
The Clearence to traverse the Ring at this point was given by the UN and Mars.....
I think this is the best season so far... i loved it, you guys are going to enjoy it.
It's really hard for the belters to play ball they're desperate. The inners have comfortable home planets they can just sit there for a long time and nothing bad will happen to them. Belters have already suffered long enough and finally, the universe offers them a second chance.
Particularly the Ganymede refugees. The loss of Ganymede Station means there is starvation across the Belt. No place can or will take them.
Drummer made a great point that in 2 generations the planet side Belters would be no different than the Inners. Since not all Belters can survive in gravity it would fracture their culture, and I would imagine that the space bound faction would be exploited by the planet side one and considered inferior.
