Thanks! Is it possible to enjoy Paris/France given the current Pension Strikes or should one make alternative plans to avoid France until the situation gets better?
My wife and I have been watching your videos for over a year, and we are finally in Paris! We are staying in the Marais and we've loved every second. Your guide was spot on with all recommendations - La Pave was delightful and Miznon was life-changing. Thank you for helping make this one of our best vacations ever!
Hi, I will be in Paris after two weeks and I have a hotel reservation in Le Marais district. Is this the right place to stay as a first timer or should we check other options?
Another lovely video Mr. Swanson! Been watching your back catalog and you’ve certainly grown and matured over the years. Thanks for taking us on your journey.
First time in Paris we stayed near Place de la République, and we loved it there. We walked all over Paris, and used the Metro (thanks for the tips on how to get around btw!) Montmartre was at its best when we went behind Sacre Coeur (I hope I spelled that right, my Swedish is way better) with a less hectic feeling to it, and also places where you could have craft beer with the excellent food (very important to have beer that compliments the food). We gave the Eiffel Tower a miss, but enjoyed walking through the Jardin deTuileries (we're history nerds, and I was only missing my rapier and my outfit so I could challenge some lout to a duel! Alas, I didn't even bring my rapier. Besides, I'm more of a "sword and board" person and I suck at French...) It was also a very hot summer, scorching even. But it was fun, nice place to visit and I'm glad we did it! Oh, just have to ask if you've been to Musée Cognacq-Jay? We liked it. Small, open, and lovely! And you can't hate the name... :-D We used to do one European city outside of Sweden every year until the pandemic. 17 years in a row :-) Time to start again and see where we end up next year....
Love your videos, Jay! Can’t wait to get back to Paris. Hoping to be just a bit more knowledgeable when we return. I love the culinary adventures although these are hard for tourists that are not fluent French speakers.
Just discovered your videos today! Very concise information. Thank you for the information! Looking forward to watching your other videos! Oh, and thanks for the information about Marais on Monday! Was planning on that day, until now!
Great contribution indeed. Makes me miss Paris - and the coffee in the morning. This video is a masterpiece of how to use professional video graphics skills, with the heart of a food lover, and a person who is curious about anything wherever they go into a very enjoyable video posted on UA-cam for the pleasure of the viewers and not just for monetary purposes. The presented seems to enjoy his job - the best way to go through life, enjoying what you are doing for a living.
The Marais is quickly becoming a favorite for me. (stayed there my last two trips). Looking forward to trying your recommendations on my next jaunt across the pond! Merci Beaucoup.
Someone’s probably commented on this before, but Paris in my Pocket…You’re ‘pimp’ing Paris?! 😂 Cute. I bought the guide for our trip almost a year ago and read it top to bottom, planned our stay with it and then one of us got sick so we stayed closed to our little inn the whole time just out of necessity. 😭 Stayed at the Hotel Sookie and loved it, which wasn’t in the guide, but giving it a plug. Jay your food recommendations are top notch. We went to Painpain twice & Devotions coffee shop which was by far the best pastries and coffee we had in awhile. TY for your amazing tips…more dog treat shops and dog store recommendations please 😊 Where do you get sweaters for your dog?
Definitely so french the "Savagnin sous voile" Jura wine with it's walnuts taste. You should try the "poulet au vin jaune" chicken cooked in this wine with cream and morel mushrooms 😋
BHV is also a great place to stock up on high quality chocolate bars like Bonnat. Une Glace a Paris has amazing ice cream creations by an MOF pastry chef.
went during the “yellow vest” protest & actually had a good time. Police were present at all the tourist areas, which in turn those scammers & pickpockets weren’t around. Not to say you should have your wallet in your back pocket. Other tourists cancelled so we felt it was less crowded as well. Just stay vigilant, do your best on knowing which public transportation lines are running & you should have a great time! best of luck🎉
It's definitely not something to deter you from visiting, I agree. Just make backup plans to stay in your neighborhood for a day if the metro goes on strike, and keep your wits about you when you see any protests in action - but you can also go check them out and see what's going on. It's generally very safe.
Don’t miss the Hotel de Soubise (archives nationales). Enter the courtyard (free) and admire the fantastic architecture. Another favorite is the intimate and little known Musée Cognacq-Jay that hosts a collection of pastel portraits by Quentin de la Tour. Moreover, Carnavalet, Victor Hugo’s house and Cognacq-Jay permanent collections are free museums. Other fine museums in the area are the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du judaisme, the Musée national Picasso and the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature. All those places in stunning architectural mansions…
Thank you so much for your informative video! What is the name of the song playing in the background around 13:20 when you're introducing Terra? Thank you!!!
Another great video! I stayed in the 4ème 19 years ago, and will be (finally!) re-visiting next January and will be staying close by in the 11ème. Question: do you update your guide annually?
I do! This one is way overdue but we're close to releasing it. The plan is to send an updated version to anyone who bought the 2022 guide in 2023 - so buy in 2023, get 2023 (eventually haha). Sorry for the delay!
Hi Ja y .I'm glad to see you're doing well and making videos. I hope your dual citizenship process was successful. I;m going to send one of your videos to my friend who studied cooking Paris so he can see what you're doing and if he knows some of the places you visit. There is a wine bar in the next block where I live. It was formally a funeral home. They have live music on the weekends which I can hear outside. I watched this year's Bastille Day Parade on You Tube. It was very impressive. You mentioned that the French firemen has open house at their stations so maybe since Covid us going away they are having them again. I'll hsve tro catch up on the videos I missed . My niece has a French bulldog and he is really cute. They named him Tito after a pupular vodka. I'm sure your dog is a good compan to you. Did you go to any 4th of Juky parties. I'll have to catch the fireworks later. We had a nice dispkay here . I can see it from my porch. Take care and I'll look forward to your new videos. Happy Bastille Day !
I'll be there next month and I'm wondering what impact the strikes are having. We'll be coming in from London on the Eurostar, and then from Paris to Amsterdam on Thalys.
He has a video about this. Now that the trash strike is being paused, things should be nicer and less smelly in the city. It is safe, but there are days when the trains and/or metros aren’t running, so it’s best to have apps that will tell you what’s happening.
11:54 One little thing about that name. The neighbourhood's and market's name comes from a Catholic institution from the 16th century that took care of orphans and had its seat there. The name "red children" itself is unclear but it comes either from the fact that the kids taken care of by that institution may have worn something red as a uniform or that they were regarded as "red" because they mostly came into orphanage from the death of their mothers in labor, thus being covered in blood at birth 12:39 Similarly, the Temple quarter is named after the famous Knight Templars, who had their headquarters there, almost a small city inside Paris. The knights were purged and burned at the stake as sorcerers and devil worshippers by king Philip IV on the westernmost point of the Île de la Cité, where there is now a very cute park. Legends say that the Grandmaster of the Knight Templars, Jacques de Molay, cursed the royal line with his dying breath causing the succession crisis that devolved into the Hundred Years War, and the Capetians dynasty from Philip IV onwards are known as the Cursed Kings (also the name of a best-seller book series, adapted into a historical series on French national television in the 70s, which is now beloved classic and actualy was an inspiration for GoT). The Temple's main tower was kept despite the purge and the supposed curse of the Knights, and was converted into a prison, where Louis XVI and his family were locked up during the Revolution. It was finaly demolished under Napoleon, who feared it would become a symbol for the royalists, erasing the last trace of the huge fortified monastery of the Knights.
Evolving - the political side of things went bananas so while I expect the trash to get cleaned up soon, there will likely be a lot of protests this year. Nothing to worry about IMO, but something I'll try to share some tips for soon

Awesome! Thank you. I’m staying in the Marais on my trip. Do you have any advice or guidance for folks who will be in Paris in next few weeks considering the recent protests and potential strikes?
I need to put some thoughts down, but basically just keep an eye on disruptions to transportation with an app like CityMapper, and be aware that you might have plans interrupted between Bastille and Republique, or even along the river near the National Assembly. It's rare that anything will ever erupt into violence, but the longer any protest goes (and the later into the night) the more likely it becomes, so keep your wits about you. That said, it's always interesting to go and see a protest in person. The French do it right. The current situation is similar but also really different to others in recent history so I'm going to need to do some research and hopefully have some more specific advice to give.
Hi Jay Just a question…what is the building in the background of the video at about 13:17ish with the turret? I have seen it featured in other videos about Paris but haven’t been able to put my finger on what it is called. Sorry for the weird question. Cheers!

have to disagree about L'As du Falafel. King Falafel just mto the east is better and no lines. I'm from Detroit, so I know a little about middle eastern food
So we tried some of your suggestions and sorry to say but they aren't good imo.... 1. Pelaton cafe is super overpriced, underwhelming and has the most basic choices. The squares across the street have far better options, taste better and are much cheaper. Pelton is super touristy. 2. BHV is super expensive. You find all the same stuff at 30-50% prices across paris. It's trying to be Galaries Lafayette. We went during black friday sales and still found everything expensive. Zara, Mango, Ikea, JD sports had better offers and are stones throw away. I am sorry, but If u are getting a cut u are super dishonest. Unfollowed.
Thanks for your feedback! I don't get a cut from anything I recommend, and I purchase everything out of my own pocket. Peloton pricing is actually normal for specialty coffee in Paris, and there's a lot of tourists because, well, they run a tour company ;) I think perhaps what we like simply doesn't align, and that's okay. There are lots of people giving advice on Paris, and I hope you find the content creator who vibes better with what you're looking for.

Great question, not weird at all. It's the National Archives, whose museum is actually free (if small). Worth a visit.
Hey, Erin ! The National Archives were formerly "Hôtel de Soubise" ("Hôtel" in French does not only mean "hotel" like in English, but also a huge private mansion in town, generally aristocratic).
