I graduated from high school in 1972 in Ohio USA . Every girl in our high-school received a miniature Lane cedar chest from our local furniture store. Prompting parents to buy a full sized one referred to as a Hope Chest. Girls filled the full sized ones with wool blankets and sweaters to keep moths out and also started collecting things for their future. Like quilts and linens. My parents were married in 1944. Their chest was identical to that chest. When I had to clean the house out there were my Father's military dress uniform and hat. Many old photos. It was full of memories. Because of the cedar and the quality of Lane chest it was a time capsule. My neice still has the chest.
Yes she graduated from a catholic high school in Dayton , Ohio I’ll see if she can remember the furniture stores name. Thank you I remember the name Lane I’m class of “76” Hi it’s a small world!
Traditionally, cedar chest or trousseau chests, were where unmarried women collected special items for their households as part of their dowry when they married. You will often find the flatware ( silverware ), random pieces of fine, hand worked linen pillowcases, tea towels and bed sheets, fancy worked lace and whatnots. . After marriage, most of these young ladies would store their childhood and other memorabilia, their university grad things, wedding shoes and veils, or family christening gowns. These chests are the unwritten biographies of the women that once owned and loved them. Thanks for sharing your discoveries with us. Cheers from Vancouver. :)
I was born 1975 and had, not cedar, but a chest to gather up stuff for later life. It is actually a smart thing to do. I had dishes, linen, curtains and all kinds of household things, men should do it too!
My mom got a cedar chest from a friend in high school. When she was visiting her she sat on the chest and my mom's friend asked if she liked it, and when my mom said she did she gave it to her. Her dad made her all kinds of furnishings and she didn't appreciate it. But my mom did. My mom kept it for her entire life. I have it. It stored many keepsakes. I left all of her things in it
My mother had one and it was such a special treat when mom opened that wonderful smelling cedar chest and allowed us to go through everything while she told us the stories behind those beloved treasures. Xoxo
I've bought a few vintage Andrew Stewart kits. The wool is a "skirt length" of wool tweed handwoven in the border counties. One of my kits even had a photo taken of the weaver in his croft, sitting at his loom. They usually come with grosgrain ribbon and coordinating buttons, as well.
I may be wrong but I’m wondering if the doll is supposed to be Heidi, from the Shirley Temple movie? Especially since she’s paired with the goat?? I love it!
My mother told me (she is 83) that when she was a senior 12th grade A furniture store would send all the graduating girls a small jewelry box that was the exact copy of a large or normal size cedar chest as a Graduation present and to hopefully sell the cedar chest for their hope chests. The jewelry box my mother has is felt lined and smells wonderful like cedar still today . It looks so much like the one you have. She has bequeathed the box to me. I’m so happy to have it. I will pass it on to my daughter. The chest you have is a Hope Chest I believe.
Hope you are not embarrassed about the “hair dye” discovery. It offered a little bit of history , education and comic relief . You are an apex junk hustler and I love your show!
Yeah, Alexander seems very embarrassed by the "hair dye" discovery... it was a very funny moment Alexander. You are very naive and wholesome... Hope you do well at that "diecast" auction...
Washer/dryer salt and pepper set. Damned. I'm drooling again. For the miniaturist in Canada.... they fit perfectly in 12th scale dollhouses. (I have 3 pairs in 3 different houses)
I have a collection of s/p sets like that. Washer/dryer, hat rack/hats, TV, Piano, Bowling Pin/ball, ice cream cones, frying pans, mixer with s/p beaters, etc. From the 50s and lots of fun to show people. Never heard of them being used in dollhouses, but I suppose many of them would work.
The kits to kit sweaters with matching skirts (the piece of wool you found with the yarn) were wildly popular in the late 50's, early 60's. Keep that together!! Intact kits with patterm are really hard to find!
I really wish you would give an option to purchase the paper products like the doctor tube and ledgers ets. There is value in it. Even the bits like random tiny things….. the doll!!!
Of all the compliments you deserve, one that cant be understated is my appreciation that you post the occasional weekend video. Thanks so much because many channels do not.
Even the yarn is very popular. It is so hard to make items from vintage patterns when the original wool called for is no longer being manufactured. The knitting kit is fantastic.
Had to come on and say. The reindeer in the trunk, are little gems. Some are really valuable. Not sure which ones you have but fun to look up. Good luck😊
From what you are reading on the tag, I think the robe may be for a minister /clergy or maybe a judge. It looks thicker than you typical graduation gown. I love watching you guys. Thank you for all of you content.
A treasure for every type of collector in that beautiful vintage cedar chest! I especially loved the vintage pink sweater!! Love all your videos....t'was nice to see Melissa pop in as well! As always.... ♥ from beautiful sunny BC
After the "Is it hair dye?" unboxing and commentary in the previous video, I was rather anxious when Alex started to unzip what appeared to be a woman's accessory!
The Native American doll was very popular in 1955+ and I believe you have “Mary had a little Lamb” doll, the washer/dryer was probably meant for a dollhouse. The silver spoon might have been a baby gift
The "letter" you found right in the beginning (3rd item or so) belongs to the nailclipper. Which is Solingen made and therefore a good quality item. Better put it together to sell. :)
I never knew Steiff made a goat to go with Heidi until this video, what a great treasure to find, love that movie, Google said it's very, very, rare, such fun, enjoyed the video.
That’s not a trunk!! It’s a cedar chest! My mom had one just like it!! She put all kinds of things in it. But mostly treasures to her! She even still had original bill of sale to it from 1945. I think it said 40.00 dollars when she bought it!
Alex I think Cedar chests were used to store woollens (hence the wee sheep) and moths don’t like cedar, so you didn’t end up with holes in your woolies!!
10:12- I had a white rabbit pelt when I was about 12 in the 90s and I did make a purse out of it. It was super soft. I didn't use it because I kind of felt guilty for having it, poor bunny. But I used to love to feel it. I was a foster child and moved quite a few times and it disappeared a long with some other things I used to have. 🤦🏻♀️
I like the stife Goat, whatever it was I like the rabbit pelts I like the shorts pretty good trunk full of things I liked it. Thanks for the video you on your next one.😢
That was very interesting! I like the little coin purse and the pink sweater. It's fun to see things that people set aside that were important to them to keep in a special place. The little washer and dryer was pretty cute and probably collectible for someone. What a cute addition to a little doll house they would make. I really enjoy watching you explore things from chests and boxes to homes full of history. Oh yes, and the Steiff goat was a real find.
Hi Alex from New Orleans, LA USA. Thanks for saving the Cedar Chest to go through it with all of us. It’s amazing how well they protect all of the items that was in there. It was nice that Melissa came over at the right time to give you a hand. God bless you both and your family. Take care until the next video. 🙏🤗💖👍
I always loved going through my moms cedar chest as a kid. She kept it at the foot of her bed. It had her old journals and yearbooks, high school cheerleading uniforms, letters and cards from loved ones, etc.
The chest is beautiful and it has stood the test of time, and still kept everything inside safe. I love cedar chests and the meaning behind them. You have a great day
If those are vintage wool yarns in good condition a. The chances are it's still very usable; and b. It's probably worth a bit. Also, I would suggest that the red fabric, in the box with the red yarn, was for a matching skirt. Since its Shetland wool, and there is plaid fabric too, is it possible the family had Scots links (or just a holiday).
One of the ancestors had the title "honourable" - this might be his judges robes rather than graduation robes - specially if it's made by a legal tailor

Hi, I have about 20+ trunks and multiple steam trunks and barrels that were in my Uncles storage from June 1971 till 2018 when we moved it to a unit close to my house. I haven't been through everything yet. They all have multiple locks on them but I also have a bag of his keys. It's like a game trying to figure out what key goes where. Thanks for sharing!!
Some special keepsake items. Glad the chest avoided damage from the flooded floor. This type of finds make the dusty, messy days of toil more tolerable for you. Thanks for sharing. Hope you will give us a tour of art/collectables on display in your home.
Tartan ,great for Xmas bows ,or table cloth ,if it was made in Scotland, u can Google the pattern ,to find our the clan /family name of that particular tartan ,and sell it online Canadians and Americans would love genuine tartan ,great video
As a young lady you were lucky if you had a cedar chest. Usually it was a wooden box or chest called a hope chest or sometimes a bottom drawer . At an early age young girls woul work on making household items for their bottom drawer in preperation for marriage. Great looking cedar chest. Keep Safe❤Keep Well❤
My older sis graduated 1979 from Twin Falls Idaho and received a small Lane chest and some other freebies. I graduated Meridian Idaho 1983 and got zip. But relatives sent/gave me $180 which is what I spent back then on announcements (I think I was played) so it was nice. And mom bought me Chinese dinner...
I don’t know if there was actually anything in it that people used to collect but this was a hope chest that young girls kept what they collected in the hope that someday they will be able to use it when they got married. Some people collected silverware, glassware, etc.
Yes, I built my own full-sized hope chest in high school advanced woodworking class and received a blue ribbon on it at a regional industrial arts fair in the 70s. I believe there were only two of us girls in the class, but my grandpa was a carpenter and I wanted to impress him. I did. 😄

I got one too. 1969 grad
I graduated in 1971 from a northeastern Ohio school and received a Lane Cedar Chest, that I still have! It is filled important items from my life!
I had chest her in UK. It was called 'a bottom draw'
Hi Alex loving the series , The Steiff goat and doll should be kept together ,I think the doll is Heidi .
Yes! That goat is adorable and a good find, and I think you may be right about the connection. It very well could be Heidi.
Oh that would make sense, good call!
Didn't get a good look at the dolls material but looks similar to Lenci dolls, if it is felt.
@@annmoore6747,It is so cute,I Googled it,it is Heidi and her goat,it says very, very, rare.

We called them Hope Chests.
We call them bottom drawers !
I was born 1975 and had, not cedar, but a chest to gather up stuff for later life. It is actually a smart thing to do. I had dishes, linen, curtains and all kinds of household things, men should do it too!

That was probably the minister of justice robes!
I love it!
I loved that movie as a kid took years to find it again to show my own kids.
My mother told me (she is 83) that when she was a senior 12th grade A furniture store would send all the graduating girls a small jewelry box that was the exact copy of a large or normal size cedar chest as a Graduation present and to hopefully sell the cedar chest for their hope chests. I got one from our local furniture store when i graduated too. I passed it on to my daughter for her trinkets.
I have my late Mom's. She treasured it and so do I. 💖🇨🇦
Excellent marketing strategy! I wanted a lane cedar chest to fill up with dishes and linens🥰
I graduated high school in '73 and received a Lane small cedar chest. I still have it.
'74 grad here, from Minnesota. I also got a mini cedar chest. Then a full size one for graduation from my parents.
Hope you are not embarrassed about the “hair dye” discovery. It offered a little bit of history , education and comic relief . You are an apex junk hustler and I love your show!

@@sand3882 TV, washer/dryer, hat rack, and the pot belly stoves.
I think the Legal and Clerical label means that that was a judges robe, not a graduation 👩🎓 garb… but lovely to have a guest appearance by Mellisa
Wasn't there a previously found clipping or something stating that the doctor's dad was a judge?
The kits to kit sweaters with matching skirts (the piece of wool you found with the yarn) were wildly popular in the late 50's, early 60's. Keep that together!! Intact kits with patterm are really hard to find!
And Shetland wool is expensive!
I was going to say the same. Its value is together as a set. Don’t mess with it. It’s awesome.
I know people who pay good money for these kits. Good score.
Always coveted one of these kits, but was never able to afford one. Seeing it now still made my heart flutter even though I'm in my eighties. 😊
Yes, Roxanne Richardson did a few segments on those kits, over on her channel.
For the sake of accuracy: that's a chest (for storage), not a trunk (for transporting).
I hope u do not separate the goat from the Heidi doll. They belong together and are probably rare.
I love it when your wife joins you. She’s so nice.
I Kno! She's a doll🥰
When I’m gone,I hope folks treat my belongings like you treat the past belongings Very impressed from Mississippi USA
I really wish you would give an option to purchase the paper products like the doctor tube and ledgers ets. There is value in it. Even the bits like random tiny things….. the doll!!!
A Judge's robe. All the very best!
That red fabric was most likely intended to be lining or perhaps a matching skirt to the sweater.
Those green shorts and pink sweater were adorable. Would look cute together too!!
Those green shorts were amazing! And the pink cardi, too! Fun video! Thanks, again, Alex!

That is a cedar chest that we used to call 'hope chests'. 🙂
I was trying to remember that!

Really enjoyed Melissa playing with the beautiful doll.
I'm glad the yarn will be going to auction!! The Steiff Ram is so cute!!
OMG I love that TréLis talc tin! It has a perfect synthesis of 1910's Parisian Ars Nouveau and Mackintosh Glasgow design.
When I was growing up my mom would save bows from crasages and make her own with flowers from the yard for mother's day, Easter and special occasions
The Native American doll was very popular in 1955+ and I believe you have “Mary had a little Lamb” doll, the washer/dryer was probably meant for a dollhouse. The silver spoon might have been a baby gift
The doll might be "Heidi" her goat was called "Schnucki". Ad least on the cassets I used to listen to. I love trunks like that.
The wool and fabric kit were produced as a kit to make a skirt and sweater suit.
Vintage costumers would love to get hold of it!
