Something I learned from my Granny. Old women..Granny included...often left deco stick pins in hats, brooches on dresses, jackets, and coats. They often hid valuables in old shoes, glass jars and tin cans in the ground and the hollows of trees. One person's trash is another treasure.
Wow, Alex, that trunk was gold to us journal makers! The paper dolls, the royal family scrapbooks, even the school assignment book. Put all those in a lot for auction and one of us would buy them! The old books you find, same thing. That Wizard of Oz book is a treasure. For paper and vintage lovers, some of your finds are just awesome! Thanks for taking us along on your adventures! ❤
Hi Gayle! Nice to see you here! I wanted to write a similar comment to Alex but... I had no courage :) The papers, the letters, the scrapbooks (have you seen the victorian one?), paperwork and broken beads can be usefull to junkjournalers. :) Thank you Gayle for everything actually!
I'm sitting on a box of my grandmother's scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, wondering what to do with them. Now I know to list them for junk journalers. So glad to have come across your thoughtful comments!
Period or vintage paper dolls can have a lot of value. Also vintage doll house furniture! They are Very difficult to find-easily destroyed, lost or damaged as played with.
OMG! I'm dying the way you are treating those Esquire magazines! They are valuable. I'm an ephemera specialist - the MOST valuable stuff you can find - because it is NOT meant to be saved, so it it quite often very rare. I. Am. DYING!! The way you are treating all that VALUABLE paper - I can't handle it!!
Agreed, there’s a whole world of vintage paper crafters out there. We create art and junk journals from altered books, papers, old photos/cabinet cards, film negatives, photo slide frames, wall paper, maps, lace, ribbon, linen, rusty keys, tiny glass objects, buttons, you name it. Google the craft brand Tim Holtz and get the idea except what Alex finds in these old homes is the real deal!
Those carpets are really nice and look in good condition - despite any nicotine in them. I would have put them on something like Craig's List with a time limit for picking them up, being clear that they would need to be taken straight to a carpet cleaner. They don't look very worn and many people would be delighted to get 'free' carpets for only the cost of cleaning.
I saw that too and I was screaming at the screen saying “Keep the perfume bottle!” “The perfume bottle!” It’s so beautiful. Just needs a little polishing!!
@Loretta Louvros I have been collecting the tiny perfume bottles for years and have a few that are over 100 yrs old. Sad seeing that one be tossed out.
Alex I suggest you bring a large shop vac with paper debris collectors on these jobs. You don’t have to sweep and handle those droppings. Bring extra bags and filters so you can just throw them in the dumpster,
Alex please don't throw the coffee table in the living room in the dump just because the finish is old and stained. That is EXACTLY the kind of piece those of us who like to refinish/faux finish furniture are looking for! I'd pay $20 US at a thrift store for it! Or put it on the curb, I guarantee someone will take it!
NoNoNadiaMoore I know. I was having a fit when he said he was tossing the coffee table. I would refinish it and it would be just gorgeous. It's so hard to find really old quality pieces like that.
The large “safety pin” from the moldy box is a blanket pin. When you rode in a sleigh, you would pin the blanket around you to keep warm. It is very old.
I think the metal pathology tubes may have been for blood testing that used to be required prior to marriage to find syphilis. If either person was positive, a marriage license wouldn't be issued until the infection was treated.
So shocked how you went through the trunk so destructively, considering you are also a collector. There was so much in there that others would love, that's now trashed.
Alex, just an FYI, people always say there is nicotine staining on walls, furniture etc., it's not the nicotine doing the staining, it's the actual smoke itself. Nicotine is the addictive part of tobacco smoke. It is colorless and odorless. As for the rugs in the living room, if they were quality needlepoint, taking them to a good rug cleaner will remove all residue. They can be very valuable. In the case of the early Disney toy cradle with some mold on it, using three parts water and one part bleach will remove all the mold. Disney collectors would snap it up in an instant.
Yep, you're right, it's the "tar," which is not actually tar, but a compound of various chemicals and carcinogens, that causes the staining. The tar is also what causes cancer, nicotine itself does not. That being said, even though I am an ex-smoker, I am shocked by the condition of those keys. Did this person chain smoke for 60 years and never once clean the keys? It looks like a beautiful piano otherwise. Hope it can be thoroughly cleaned and restored.
I worked in a hospital cleaning equipment. Mold on smooth surfaces can be killed with some household products, but the spores are a different matter. Spores (reproductive structures) have a kind of shell to enable them to survive in bad conditions. It requires heat, toxic chemicals and pressure to kill many species of spores. Alex is right. Pitch the moldy stuff.
Those carpets were the first thing I noticed in that house. They are gorgeous...nice classic pattern...and they looked to be in really good condition. Professional cleaning these days can remove ANYTHING from carpets. Love looking through the ephemera...you might be surprised how collectable that stuff is...even old seemingly insignificant letters. The whole thing is like one glorious treasure-hunt.
Oh Alexander, when oiling the wood, ALWAYS go with the grain, not across it. And spray the cloth with cleaner when you do the piano, not the keys. The cleaner gets down between the keys and can damage the wood underneath while it sits there. The only two times you've made me cringe. I love your mask with the aliens. Oh, the visual when you said you hoped the log wasn't full of fire ants! LOL This house is so interesting. They saved some unusual stuff.
I love the pattern and colors of that rug in the living room, wish I could find one like it. Can't quite put my finger on why, but I'm finding this clear out particularly sad. Bits and pieces of mementos of someone's life scattered everywhere, gathering dust and mice eating away at it.
We rented a house of a heavy smoker (when he died the son, who was a friend of ours, offered it to us at low rent.) We were in a 2 bedroom apartment with our 3 boys. The house had 3 bedrooms and a pool. Anyway the work of getting the nicotine out of that house was monumental. We washed and rewashed walls, smooth ceilings, and carpets for over a year. We painted the popcorn ceilings and walls. But when we had the swamp cooler running you could smell that house a block away. I don't even want to go into the condition of the floor around the toilet. The owner and his friends were drunks who hung out there at his bar. We trashed the whole bar setup (picture 70s era dark brown corkboard and smoked mirrors) and reclaimed the dining room. It was gross at first. But we made it into a home. Lived there almost 5 years.
My mom use to work in the medical profession and back in the 60s when I was in Girl Scouts, I needed a ground cover for my sleeping bag and tent. So she brought home morgue sheets for me to use. I definitely had a story to tell around the campfire!
Those screens are adjustable width window screens for double hung windows. Raise the window, insert screen, lower window to keep them in place. I can remember sweltering summers at an aunt's old house with nothing but these sorts of screens to let in the air.
Oh gosh, the doll clothes and furniture in the box with the wartime mementoes! I think those must be from when the lady of the house was a little girl. It’s so poignant, it’s a box full of precious memories with no one to remember them …
I thought that the dresser and the matching makeup table could have belonged to the mother of the deceased lady, who seems to have been the ballet dancer.
That was a celluloid kewpie doll in the box in the trunk. The paper dolls are collectible provided they aren't musty. Please check the leather portfolio that was flattened in the trunk. Could be something valuable in there. Can't wait for the attic opening! Thanks Alex!
Those rugs are absolutely beautiful!! I would absolutely take those to the cleaned. Rugs can be super expensive and just paying to have them cleaned is a great deal
People love the die cut Valentine's or Christmas cards. I believe that Halloween die cuts are the most expensive and sought after! I hope you saved them!!
I loved those scrapbooks! I know it's hard to record single handed but Alex, you made me cringe when you shoved your hand in there and bent the papers, lol.
Exactly what I thought too. Just destroying some items that certain collectors would pay good money for such as the paper dolls, scrap books, the Royal's memorabilia and vintage papers and magazines. Why can't he take out items in an orderly fashion and set them aside instead of just leaving them to be tossed into a jumbled mess as he digs through to the bottom of the chest. And it makes me wonder how many valuable things he has inadvertently tossed because he didn't look closely through items. SMH 🤦♀ 🤦♀
The garage trunk was the most fascinating because I would have kept the papers and scrapbooks and had a good read. The map would look lovely framed. Personally, I would have kept the carpets because they were salvageable and I would have kept the doll's cradle because that could have been restored. Just because you don't have time to do it, doesn't mean to say that nobody else will. You can always sell it as a restoration project.
I don’t think that was a doll cradle but an actual infant cradle and he did say it was a baby cradle. It did have mold on it so I don’t think keeping it would be such a good idea.
Those window screens from the trunk-they are great as they slide to fit any window. I have a couple I have drug from house to house for 40 years! They have been useful in all the houses we have lived in so I think someone will want them
I was looking for some of those recently for my home. I’m in a condominium with a few screens missing. Would love to have some of those adjustable screens like when I was a kid.
I am looking at cement floors at the moment so nearly cried to see the carpets being thrown out. But enjoyed the adventure down memory lane all the same.
For the very life of me I just can’t get my head around someone keeping everything everywhere for which I assume the keeper thought a forever need to keep. I’m 75 and diligently trying to cull my closets and other points of collections. It’s hard but I do not want the responsibility to fall upon my children. I enjoy watching your videos and vicariously treasure hunting!
It is hard to fathom. Some people just have trouble making decisions so they have basement full of delayed decisions. Then it becomes too much to deal with and they can't get down there. Or they could just be lazy cuz the kitchen drawers were full of garbage.
Am I the only one that looks forward to the attics and basements the most? Out of all that stuff and watching you do this over the years, I'm always so excited for the oldest...most random...forgotten treasures !! Great video as always!
I’m actually thankful for whoever stashed away all the papers in the truck!! It’s there for us to see and someone else is going to love it all at the auction! Almost all things like these have been thrown in landfills years ago
Pearls or hematite which is also nice ! Those carpets would be beautiful after cleaning ! The screens are for the old windows, we had them in my youth. They expand to fit the window width.
Alex, when we sold my husband's parent's house all the asbestos abatement company was required to do was tent the part of the basement that had the asbestos tiles and remove them, ( just 2 bedrooms) They had a special (I think it was negative air pressure box) and didn't cost a whole lot. I always say that if a house has good bones it is most likely worth saving.
We have the King's coronation this time next week, so those royal scrapbooks would be snapped up over here, for sure! We still have a LOT of royalists ❤ They're wonderful. And please continue to show what you think some of us *may* find fascinating, as those that don't, can just skip forward 😉 (oh the joys of UA-cam).
🙋♀️❤ It's so interesting to piece together the puzzles in these houses. I like to imagine the different people who scrapbooked the royal family and Christmas cards... Who played the piano, or smoked like a chimney. Who was going to cash in on all the Cabage Patch Dolls. Who was the budding ballerina artist . Who had a dollhouse. Liked teacups and men's magazines? On and on. What happened to them all. Floods,Mice and spiders...Thr rise and fall of little empires.
after all you've uncovered I am most blown away by the minerals you found outside -- those would definitely come back with me too but I'd be taking them to be assessed....great finds!
That trunk in the garage was pretty cool. I know you are a guy but the paper dolls and scrap books have value too. Those ones regarding the royal family had some good information and the car makes me think of the one you just got fixed up and gone. lol Have a great day
Those screens are very old window screens that could be adjustable. They’re not for the house. They can be used in any window. They’re very hard to find in my neck of the woods. We had them in our old farmhouse growing up and I would love to have some again! Take them and sell them.
I wouldnt throw those area rugs out or that coffee table ! I have friends here that paint that type of old furniture for resale..thats in good shape for that kind of project ! She brings some pieces back to life & resales them that most would not even attempt !
What a fantastic trunk find in the garage. I am so interested in the box of the doll and furniture. The old paper dolls might be nice if they are not wet or nasty. What a lot of treasures in the scrapbooks. You never know what you can find in odd places. This was the most interesting find for me of your explore so far.
Alex just because it isn't a trunk filled with vintage hot wheels doesn't make it uninteresting I love old newspapers and scrapbooks I definitely would be interested on bidding for the entire contents of the trunk I think your interests get in the way of what you have sometimes especially lately the whole granary video was not that impressive and your buying thousands of dollars worth of toy cars is getting repetitive
@@beadjeannie ......I also find it infuriating that he handles items much, much too often. Then throws it back into the same box and has to handle it again and again. Seems like a clean out would go more quickly and more organized by picking up an item ONCE and determine save or toss. Rummaging through boxes or trunks and then having to touch things over and over seems like nonsense. I get the impression that he is bored with the whole project.
Alex, with all the dust and yuck you stirred up in this video, you must have clogged the drains when you showered. 🥴 I do hope you slept well because you look exhausted. The trunk in the garage was very interesting. So much history. What fun to have read everything. Thanks for taking us along. ☺️
Oh wow I loved that little Disney cradle with the Mickey Mouse and Cinderella on it and in the video, to me, it looked like it could be cleaned up. You can get that mold spray that kills mold, but I am not sure of the extent of it either. The old vintage sled is so cool too! Lots of cool items! Great video!
Perfume bottles are highly collectible and can be very valuable. I hope it was tossed as junk...that looked like it could have been gold😮 60s Easybake oven box in garage
Alex, please don't forget to take care of yourself my friend ✌️💜 You look like this job has maybe taken a toll on you more than most of your other jobs 🤗
Glad to see a mention of your well being. I’ve seen the toll that this kind of work has taken on you in past adventures, and you’ve bounced back to take on yet more. It’s hard work, for sure, but the thrill of the hunt is irresistible for you, isn’t it? We all feel very lucky that you are taking us along with you. A privilege to meet your lovely family. You are indeed loved, and you will always remain careful.
I would closely look over the rocks. Rock Crystal, agates, chalcedony, etc. can have some value, and good pieces can be cut or polished for jewelry or showpieces.
31:00 Some of those shoes are amazing. Even if they can no longer be worn, I'll bet retro designers would be very interested, including costume designers for movies. I live in Vancouver, aka Hollywood North, so I keep thinking about how much of the stuff you find would be of use for movie and TV sets, design, etc.
At 15:06, that silver medallion was a lot of times a good luck piece from WWII. Husband /Wife, Boyfriend / Girlfriend would get these and exchange them to one another for luck and love while off to war. Take a closer look and see

I was disappointed by that. Maybe its because they are not cars.
I was wincing every time he stuck his hand in that trunk. I would have kept all that stuff.
Yes, I was screaming at the monitor..lol.. the paper dolls would be my favorite find! I think they were trashed because of mold though.
Ditto the historic newspapers!
Not sure about Canada, but In the Uk vintage scrapbooks always do well at auction, love them they’re fascinating
I wish I could find big area rugs like that in the trash, well worth the effort to clean.

I’m doing the same thing
RanchStock Stray: Your children will be thanking you!
I love a good clear out.
So much work! Do the clothes and stuffed animal# have the nicotine scent?
Am I the only one that looks forward to the attics and basements the most? Out of all that stuff and watching you do this over the years, I'm always so excited for the oldest...most random...forgotten treasures !! Great video as always!
That magazine, with the saying "Do not feed or annoy," is just as appropriate now as it was then...lol.
That new dumpster is cleaner then the walls and furniture of that house!
I’m actually thankful for whoever stashed away all the papers in the truck!! It’s there for us to see and someone else is going to love it all at the auction! Almost all things like these have been thrown in landfills years ago
My favorite was the paper doll with clothes in the trunk.
Pearls or hematite which is also nice ! Those carpets would be beautiful after cleaning ! The screens are for the old windows, we had them in my youth. They expand to fit the window width.
Yes those are window screens!
You have worked hard on this one for sure!
Hope you kept the paper dolls from the trunk.. I'd buy them in an instant!
after all you've uncovered I am most blown away by the minerals you found outside -- those would definitely come back with me too but I'd be taking them to be assessed....great finds!
I just imagined what a gem cutter could do with them, making nice jewellery out of those.
I must have missed the minerals. What was the time stamp?

That trunk in the garage was pretty cool. I know you are a guy but the paper dolls and scrap books have value too. Those ones regarding the royal family had some good information and the car makes me think of the one you just got fixed up and gone. lol Have a great day
Those screens are very old window screens that could be adjustable. They’re not for the house. They can be used in any window. They’re very hard to find in my neck of the woods. We had them in our old farmhouse growing up and I would love to have some again! Take them and sell them.
Those carpets were well worth saving, a professional clean and they would have been as good as new.
I wouldnt throw those area rugs out or that coffee table ! I have friends here that paint that type of old furniture for resale..thats in good shape for that kind of project ! She brings some pieces back to life & resales them that most would not even attempt !
Cute shoes in the garage. Be kind to one another. Stay safe. Love to all
What a fantastic trunk find in the garage. I am so interested in the box of the doll and furniture. The old paper dolls might be nice if they are not wet or nasty. What a lot of treasures in the scrapbooks. You never know what you can find in odd places. This was the most interesting find for me of your explore so far.
My favorite find was the paper dolls and Alex just tossed them back in the trunk. I hope he saved them for the auction
@@beadjeannie Especially the war-time newspapers!
@@statewench2828 I'd also love those newspapers. Those are so cool.
@@beadjeannie ......I also find it infuriating that he handles items much, much too often. Then throws it back into the same box and has to handle it again and again.
Seems like a clean out would go more quickly and more organized by picking up an item ONCE and determine save or toss. Rummaging through
boxes or trunks and then having to touch things over and over seems like nonsense. I get the impression that he is bored with the whole project.
I'm excited to see what's in the attic. 🤔
Alex, with all the dust and yuck you stirred up in this video, you must have clogged the drains when you showered. 🥴 I do hope you slept well because you look exhausted. The trunk in the garage was very interesting. So much history. What fun to have read everything. Thanks for taking us along. ☺️
I love those scrapbooks. Hope you put them in the auction.
That's exactly why I'm here in the comments! Wondering if they will go to auction since a co worker would totaly be interested in them!
O my goodness those shoes are gorgeous, those were the glamour days .👠👠👠
With the King’s coronation happening in a couple weeks, I would think there would be renewed interest in all the royalty scrapbooks.
The mags are useful for people who do scrap booking or for people who like ephemera for making tags and collage
‼️‼️OMGosh❣️ I hope Alex keeps the scrapbooks for auction - even the ones that were not royal‼️‼️
💓💖💝❤💘watching your videos, thank you for sharing and have a great night!
Perfume bottles are highly collectible and can be very valuable. I hope it was tossed as junk...that looked like it could have been gold😮 60s Easybake oven box in garage
Alex, please don't forget to take care of yourself my friend ✌️💜
You look like this job has maybe taken a toll on you more than most of your other jobs 🤗
Don’t forget to put eye drops in frequently, too. Droppings, and dust can impact on eyes, too!!
Loving all that ephemera...hoping to see that at auction.😊
Lots of ladies in the vintage movement would love those shoes!
Shame the carpets were tossed, hit with a pressure washer and they are good as new!
I would closely look over the rocks. Rock Crystal, agates, chalcedony, etc. can have some value, and good pieces can be cut or polished for jewelry or showpieces.
20:48 *June 6* 1944 Right?!? that Headline is significant! absolutely keep that!
You missed the kilt pin, the long silver pin used on a wool skirt. The pin was in the box in the basement with all the things from England.
These clean-outs are so fascinating. So many cool old things - too bad so many have to be disposed of but better safe than sorry.
Awesome again 🎸🎸🎸🎸
those rocks have been in the shed long enough, set them free Alex let them run free once again
Given the rose quartz, and amethyst chunks you found - I am super curious about the box of rocks :)
Great finds today! Love the old ephemera!
Lots of great finds.
Those Coleman camp stoves and other camp gear are starting to become very collectable.
The scrapbook with the red cover and the pot of glue illustration is pure 50s! Seeing it brings back memories! 🤔🤗
Take a closer look and see
In some places you can donate the rugs they will clean them really good and give to people that need them
