Thanks for all your advice! I took the plunge January 1! I have been excited, I have been questioning my sanity, but I’m determined to continue on especially after today’s video!
Enjoyed your video. I'm glad my experience with debating and Stand Up Comedy makes some things a bit easier to do on video. One tip I learned today? Don't record a video when the neighbor turns on his Snowblower😂
I especially loved the "search alphabet soup" tip! I'm using it to build a great list of relevant keywords I can use in titles and descriptions or just to brainstorm on potential video topics. I haven't launched yet but I always get solid ideas (and inspiration) from your channel. Your success on YT is very well-deserved! 😃
The reason why people are asking those questions is self doubt and to persuade themselves to do the next step. It is a mental hurdle. I have the same problem. I often start preparing, but when I get to the point of really starting, then I put it off doing related busywork until eventually I have talked myself out of the whole thing. It is quite a major problem.
Thank you for your great videos Diane, I started my channel- well decided to use my old channel like you did. It’s going really well. I have been sitting on so much content for years. So it has been fun and exciting to put it out into the world. I’m enjoy the creativity and learning how to edit as I go. Thanks for pushing us 55year old people to Just do it!🤣🤣🤣😊💯🙏🏼
I'm 65 recently retired and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna try my hand at starting a UA-cam channel. So I've been doing my research and came across your videos. I give you 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you for all you've shared and I wish you continued success.
I try and watch your vids as soon as I see them post and really glad I did today! I was afraid to post my first vid but I did, got 17 views so just before seeing this I listed it as private. Hearing you I will set it back to public. I know what I want to do now and will just start from there. YOU are so right just to get the first one out there, mine was far from perfect but now I have a better idea what to do. TY!
Yes, please let your videos live in public. As Diane has mentioned, those are your practice videos. I only have about 20 videos but each one I can honestly say teaches me something. Keep going! Best! 😊❤
I was wondering about the fuzzy background also! I still have an iphone 11 so will have to wait on that-also enjoyed your answer to the Instagram questions:)
I listen to you because you are encouraging and a real person. I relate to you because we have similar age. I’m in my mid fifties and want to teach young people about my work knowledge. I tend to hang around your videos because you provide real facts about what you do and the things you have done to improve your channel. Thank you for all the tips 🎉
Thank you for your advice. I am in research mode to learn about being a UA-camr/content creator. I see myself as a jack of all trades but a master at none and to get into a niche has been a struggle. But what I keep hearing, like you also said, just post and get comfortable and familiar. So I am trying to muster up the courage to do so. Thanks again for your videos.
New subscriber here! I have found your content down to earth and helpful. My problem is niching down because I am trying to inspire other retirees with fun ideas but that essentially means my topic matter is all over the place! It’s all loosely treasure hunting though. Metal detecting, rock hounding, lapidary, magnet fishing, travelling, best recipes….. see what I mean?
Well your list pretty much sounded like it was surrounding a general topic until you veered into traveling and best recipes 🙂 I don’t really know anything about the treasure hunting world but it sure seems like people would a) want to see treasures found and b) how to find said treasures themselves.
Hi Diane, enjoy your show. You give good advice. Have been experimenting with different subjects to see what sticks. Nothing did so I am going to just enjoy myself and do what I think will be fun for an audience. I have opened a second channel a few weeks ago. Doing a video almost everyday on each. I'm living it.
Hey thanks for your helpful and encouraging videos. Your content really resonates with me. One question I have - near the end of this video you mention a good point that if you're searching for video ideas and find a topic with pretty much no content, that's a bad sign. And I agree. But - didn't you say that you got started a few years ago after trying to find videos specific to your neck surgery and came up empty-handed. So then you started posting about that topic because you wanted to help out people searching for information. If you had searched that topic now and not gotten any search results, would you have still started making that content about your surgery? Just wondering if your opinion has changed since you first started your channel.
Good point - and I should have clarified that if you're searching for video ideas for the sake of building viewers and subscribers, that that's not good. If it's for other purposes, like what I pursued in creating the videos for other folks having that surgery, then I was choosing to fill the void.
Hey, thanks, Silvia. Well "faceless videos" on UA-cam kinda blew up last year but seem like that's fading a bit. If that's what you want to do - fine. But I think it puts you in a hard spot to differentiate yourself and strips you of the ability to make any connection with your viewers.
Very helpful. Ok, do you have issues with running out of storage? When I finally launched my channel this past November, I’ve gotten into doing long form videos; trying to keep them under an hour. I was using the CapCut pro version, but then switched to UA-cam Create, because I can then delete my recordings from my Samsung and work from UA-cam Create. I couldn’t do this with the Capcut Pro. Any tips would be appreciated.
Yeah, I just stay mindful of it. I transfer completed downloaded videos to store in my google drive once I have it uploaded on youtube (just as a backup.) once that's done, I delete from my photos on my phone AND from capcut. (And then empty the trash on capcut)
I agree with not worrying about multiple platforms. I started as a blog, and promoted them on Facebook and Instagram. I tried creating Reels and Stories when I added videos, but it's WAY TOO MUCH. The people who are on multiple platforms have hired help. 😂
@ Thank you for your input. That’s pretty much what I’ve been doing. I just haven’t hit the magic topic I guess. I will continue to just share my thoughts, and hopefully people will find me.
Thanks for you comment, Judy. If you haven't had a chance to watch my recent video, "If Your video gets less than 500 views, do this" - it may be helpful. I talk more about the perfect audience factor. I'm glad you're pressing on and creating more videos!
In the last three days, I put out three videos. 1 got 23 views, another one got about 27, and one got zero. Just trying to figure it all out. Am I being shadow banned?
I think the audio book of the Let Them Theory by Mel Robbin’s is an awesome read or listen to, to start with. It really helps with your self esteem to get started with things you have been procrastinating to do. 😊🎥 ok so even though I’m not on yet but it’s going to happen soon. Lol
Question, now that a law banning CapCut has been enacted in the U.S. How are you editing your videos? I'm just starting my channel and learning how to use CapCut. Now I'm thinking of using DaVinci Resolve. However, it looks complicated. Any advise?
Thankfully, CapCut is back. But certainly shows that it's wise to have a backup option. I've been looking at the VN app.... haven't gone too deep with it yet though to have much of an opinion.

I have found the niche that works for me (improvising piano for complete newbies). But my analytics have really surprised me. My target audience (people who were never taught these skills even after taking piano for years) is actually NOT who is watching my channel. The majority of people are retirees who are picking up piano for the very first time! It's exciting.... And also so not what i thought. My question is, should i then be narrowing in on THIS group of people....ie giving tips for starting up piano after retirement, speaking directly to them etc..... Out just continue on as i have been? Would love your thoughts if you have just a minute!
I guess I'd wonder what the big difference would be. Maybe a few videos oriented especially for an older crowd might help to specifically target them to subscribe, but most of it would be pretty good for most age groups, right? I'm a piano player too - good for you for spreading the joy :)
I have a music drumming channel thats thats monitized that's 16 years old with over 700 videos without talking but on camera in every one of them. I atill receive over 14k views per month, and still get comments etc, should I start with a talking head videos on that channel? Or a new channel?

Similar to Kahn Academy with dark back ground and writing or drawing ion the screen. Trying to find software or method how to do that?? Any suggestions or ideas?? ThanksInAdvance!!
Hmm - sorry Pam, I’m not too familiar with that world. There might be iOS apps that would have your face in the corner (I just use loom on my laptop). But you could always just do a straight up screen recording with audio if you’re taking it straight from your iPad.

@@DianeMoore I hear you! Fortunately I uploaded 2 videos yesterday to YT. I haven’t even done that before! Hopefully this buys me some time. I absolutely dread trying to learn new video editing software. Best of luck to all of us!! Thank you Diane.😊
Do you still have the same mic you started with or have you bought another? I still haven’t bought a mic or tripod, waiting to see if I get enough subscribers to justify the cost. I’m grateful for every subscriber, stalled in 140s after a month. I don’t know how much I’ll grow, I just want to post what’s of interest to me instead of posting for an audience. “start a UA-cam channel even if no one watches” describes me.
I think you should limit your extra platforms for every decade you’re living. 5 extra platforms when you are in your 30’s to just UA-cam when you’re in your 90’s. You don’t want more platforms than pills you have to take each day.🤨
Really good, helpful advice. Thanks.
