To be honest, I waited all my life as a Judas Priest fan, to hear some song from Al Atkins era with JP. You fulfilled my dream ! Thank you many times for this, you made my day, week, month, year.... !!!!!!
Amazing to hear little golden nuggets like this every so often. For it's age it's a very decent recording. Love KK's Hendrix-influenced playing and Congo was a great drummer.
Recorded for Judas Priest by Tony Iommi and Norman Hood, Priest were opening for a band called Family. This was part of the 1973 Whiskey Woman Tour, by early July of that year Al had left and been replaced by Rob.
Never thought I'd get to hear a recording with Al Atkins...FROM THE 70S NO LESS!!!! A dream of mine for a while and it doesn't dissapoint. They would have fit perfectly on WWA along w Sabbath and Necromandus (if they had've gotten signed) etc. At least from what I remember that was who Iommi was scouting them for....anyway thanks...now if the 1973 acetate can just be put out somehow....
Priceless to hear. Easy to take for granted the odds of someone having some kind of reasonably sized portable recorder in 1973 to make this recording. Thanks for sharing!
This was actually recorded for Judas Priest by Tony Iommi, after posting a link to this video on a Judas Priest Facebook Group I got a response from a shocked Al Atkins, who thought the tape was lost.
@@MLBFCollection I just want to know where this tape was found and how it ended up online. Edit: Site explains it: "Thanks to the efforts of 'jpmetal', 'Jakob' and 'Fabian', we finally have live recordings from 1973! Within a few days of each other, all three sent me tracks from a small-time independent compilation release called 'Downer-Rock Asylum'. In total the compilation had four Judas Priest tracks and one The Flying Hat Band track. What's more, the Priest recordings come from both Al Atkins' last and Rob Halford's first concerts."
How does this only have 3,000 views? This is such rare and historical audio. I guess Priest doesn't have that many fans today. If this were a rare Metallica or Iron Maiden concert, this video would have a million views.
Wow!!!, I have hundreds of Judas Priest bootlegs and I really had lost the faith in ever listening to something from this era. Thanks a whole lot for uploading!!
Wow this is truly heavier and more powerful. Alan Atkins sings almost a little like Rob Halford before Rob Halford replaced him. Chris Campbell is a amazing awesome drummer.
Wow! Absolute privilege to hear Al's Priest live. Massive kudos to The Priest's Boot for making this available, as well as all the other amazing stuff.
The riff is from Time / Confusion by Arthur Brown from 1967 - the later part of the song immediately before AB comes in with "Why is it so cold out here..."
This is just killer ! A real gem of a boot. I can't find any confirmation it was Al last gig with the band, but nothing against it either. For sure it's one of the last. And I like that song. Very moody and dark.
grancias busque algo de material con Atkins con priest en vivo durante muchos años ( desde que escucho priest y soy fan algo de 30 años ) .. solo falta el primer demo con el en la voz ..lml lml
KK - Lead Guitar and VOCALS?!? Did he sing a little back in the day? Glenn did all of the backing vocals after he joined, until British Steel. I like this song as much as most of what's on Rocka Rolla. Congo is really good drummer! KK really let loose as well.

Art blakey in Judas Priest haha

So Iommi saw them at this show are recorded it??? How badass is that!!!
good to know! do you know the setlist of this gig?
@@jimmyneut2702 sadly not
I wish I did
Not the most sonically pleasing recording. But, an incredible insight into the beginnings of one the the greatest metal bands ever...
WOW! So cool!
Fucking hell, didn’t expect you to comment, Love your videos man!
MLBFCollection ty! I’m a Priest fanatic!!
SpectreSoundStudios Who isn’t? Aha, you should check out The Priest’s Boot, it’s a fan site, where I found this gem!
Love your videos Glenn and yes how amazing is this. Also fuck you Glenn. :)
First time hearing anything before Rob and Glen. Love it!

MrCarGuy Yup! Insane isn’t it, I hope the makers of the compilation can dig more out the “audio archives” as they said on its official page.
I'd love to have a copy of that. Is it available anywhere?

Rare because nobody knows it exist. This is my first time finding this bootleg. Awesome Priest!!!

The main riff reminds me of "Drifting Sun" by the Scorpions.
Wow this is truly heavier and more powerful. Alan Atkins sings almost a little like Rob Halford before Rob Halford replaced him. Chris Campbell is a amazing awesome drummer.
Scott Travis could learn some old-school drumming from Chris. Loved it.
So great! Some sections sound close to Jethro Tull to me. Thanks a lot for sharing! 🎸🎵🎶
You are absolutely welcome
Nice, I love this song, Judas Priest is the best🤘🏻🔥

Muchas gracias por compartir tan valiosa grabación. Te saludo desde México.
No problem :)
What a privilege to hear something from the archives of early Priest! Thanks for sharing this little gem from the past!
That’s alright :-)
Absolutely magnificent !!!
this is great
The riff is from Time / Confusion by Arthur Brown from 1967 - the later part of the song immediately before AB comes in with "Why is it so cold out here..."
Uau ! Judas before christ!
Much heavier than Rocka Rolla.
Oh my, fantastic stuff. Many thanks for drawing my attention :)
My pleasure 😊
quite often I have found very early inceptions of bands are when they are at their absolute best
Awesome! Thanks!
No bother :-)
I heard about the drummer Chris Campbell on BLOODY ROOTS today, 11/27/22 XM 40, You learn a lot of cool stuff on XM,
wow very rare indeed.
and thus heavy metal is born
Nah.... I'd say Race With The Devil by Gun was the birth, Sabbath in 1969 with NIB and Black Sabbath after that, and then many bands from 1970-1977.
@@MLBFCollection purple haze Hendrix in 67 with many other songs

The next time someone sits down with toni could they ask him if he has any more bits of tape from this era of Priest in his vault...❤
Wow it’s cool because, for the time, it’s a cool track. But actually FINALLY hearing this cat is cool in and of itself. Cool rock n roll history!!!

¡Cualquier momento! Esperemos que aparezca más material de Atkins en un futuro próximo.
I wonder how many hidden stuff like this still waiting to be uncovered
Loads, there are a few Priest demos from 1969-1973 that have yet to be uncovered.
@@nijucow elo
Judas Priest back when the band had one guitar player, KK Downing.
1k views in a day, that’s crazy for this channel!
😮
to my knowledge, Al last gig was the next one on april 29 at Wellington Hall, Shropshire.
Thanks for the info!
Wikipedia states that Al Atkins performed his last show with Judas Priest in December of 1972.
Other sources do state April and the source this comes from states April 15th 1973, Robs first show was July so it makes sense.
I thought the Mind Conception demo was the only recording of Judas Priest with Al Atkins.
Not the only recording. It's the only surfaced studio recording. Several demos were recorded between 1969 and 1973.
@@MLBFCollection where can i hear the Mind Conception Demo??
@@MLBFCollectionthats dumb they havent been released. Atkins himself released a demo from 1973 on his YT where he claims he sings on it
Not dissimilar to early Groundhogs, actually. Even the vocals are a bit reminicent of Tony McPhee's voice and phrasings.
So let me guess , al Atkins, Chris Congo, Ian Hill, kk downing

He done the occassional backing in the day :)
Yeah well who else was gonna do them? Santa???
This track originates from an obscure metal compilation > www.discogs.com/Various-Downer-Rock-Asylum/release/13748376
I know who will like this
FEMA RegionIV who?
Me haha
Wow, they really sukd. Thank God they got better.
Is the whole gig available?
Sadly not. This is the only track that's surfaced but the whole thing was recorded, just a matter of waiting for someone to give it to the internet eh
This is why I love UA-cam!!!
Was al playing guitar? And what guitar was he playing
Possibly
No clue what guitars he played back then
Maybe Gibson's
@@MLBFCollection possibly a telecaster.
I doubt he was
What song are they playing? It sounds like nothing off of Rocka Rolla.
Morpheus, written 1972 by Al Atkins.
Chris Campbell's drumming is horrible lol Apart from that, the song is enjoyable
It doesnt sound that bad
