Absolutely the best interview of a skipper in the IMOCA series ever. It’s so hard to find English coverage of this wonderful race thank you very much for this interview. Fantastic questions. ❤❤❤
Thank you!! 🤩 Chris will be stoked to hear this! Glad the questions ticked your boxes, it’s wild what goes into this sport and we are super grateful to have had this exclusive access 🤟🏼 James was a great sport too~ Top guy!
@@SailHub reminds me of a young Alex Thomson, passionate, exited and genuine! Finger crossed for him, my worry it's a ex Hugo boss boat and as much as I adore Alex Thompson and aways have, he was literally my idol for sail and was gutted when he stopped, unfortunately every boat of his had structural issues
Sure! I can see that… mind you the work that has gone into it under the new team is just insane. I hope they have a belter of a season and manage to get an new yacht for the following season! Epic!
@SailHub I'm crossing everything for him what a love guy, we have James, Sam and Pip in a 40 boat fleet thats a typically French won race, how amazing would it be for a brit to win, we can do it for sure, Ben just did an amazing job for America's Cup, didn't win but a massive improvement on pervious years, just a matter of time, hard work, pushing the limits and decent mind focused people like James to achieve the impossible
Way more technical than what I can normally digest, but gave it a go to the end. Lots of crazy stuff for the young athletes. Hats off to you for covering all aspects of sailing life.
We just finished double handing down the coast of California, and boy is it challenging compared to crewed sailing. Just the mental aspect of not having support from a broader crew is really challenging, especially if you're trying to push hard all the time like James here. I have a new level of respect these days for short handed sailing!
Absolutely! A different breed! Mind you, coastal sailing short handed is a fair old challenge too! After all, that’s where it generally goes wrong! Well done you 👍
@@SailHub Especially Pt. Sur to Pt. Conception in California... regularly 25 - 30 knots, and weird currents that make the swell stand up in certain areas. After this time down we won't do it double handed any more: too exhausting! Thanks for producing a bunch of awesome content! Keep it up!
Thanks matey! Glad you enjoyed it! This one isn’t doing so well on the old UA-cam algorithm so it’s great to have your feedback! Best do it naked next time ay 😂
Been following your bus building. Amazing skills on show. As an aircraft engineer I'm amazed at the technical advancement on these sailing boats. Didn't really understand what you two were saying, but I still enjoyed it. I'll keep watching and learning. Thanks
Hey Malcolm. Thanks fella, great to hear you watched it despite it not being your thing! Yeah, the tech in these things is bonkers. Pretty amazing that one guy can sail it alone around the world ay! See you in the next one! 👍
If you're not yet sailing, consider joining your local club to take lessons and sail on club boats. It's a fantastic hobby that can be a lifestyle. These boats have lots of things "normal" boats don't, but the reasons for them all come from the fundamentals of sailing that are the same on any sailboat.
Gerrit, nice to hear from you fella! Sure man, here’s a link for now, I’m sure we will cover them in the beast future for you! ua-cam.com/video/c0YLfil_9j0/v-deo.htmlsi=MMN9txSb8mSELoxc
So excited for VG2024. Awesome walk-through & interview. Amazing machines. Interesting that they could add foils to Thompsons old boat. That had to be quite the engineering project.
Damn not a bit of cork blown insulation in site - hats off to those guys - amazing boats - an hour prep for a sail change and I bitch - love your work -
For sure man! Unreal really. Where’s the coffee machine at?! They must be sweating themselves to death in the mid latitudes! Thanks for the support Dirk! Always nice to hear from you 👍👊
Excellent walkthrough. I've only seen these boats from the outside, it's fascinating to see how they function. 16 step checklist for a tack is hard to grasp - on the boats I've sailed it's a single step; throw the tiller to the other side (and duck your head, I guess that's two steps) 😀
Super cool. Thank you!! I wonder why they're using 24V DC system instead of 48V. Seems they're so cutting edge they'd want those weight savings and additional capacity yet they chose 24V. Interesting! Reliability? Limited by certain gear that's 24V only?
@SailingNahoa Hey guys! Criekey, it feels like royalty speaking to us 😂🤙great to hear from you! Good question too, I would imagine its maybe because the NKE, Watt and Sea and Starlink etc do not support 48v. They would maybe add more weight in step down converters etc, I guess there’s not all that much wiring on the supply end of the spectrum in there, just a heap of nmea wires. Hope life’s going great over your way, wouldn’t mind a bit of your warmer climate right now!!🤣
@@SailHub In principle everything is smaller and lighter with higher voltage. Eventually everything may be done with 48 Volt Power over Ethernet (PoE), like Tesla's Cybertruck: power and data/control over a single cable.
I think the furlers are KZ furlers from New Zealand. I have even seem them on race boats relabeled for sponsorship reasons. Many of the pros prefer them, while most cruisers have never heard of them. They are available for cruising boats and there isn't anything better or more confidence inspiring on the front of the boat.
Hey Gavin, thanks mate. Na, fella. Certainly not dropped. It’s the main reason for our existence right now. The problem is that we don’t want to put wish washy content out. And it’s all been computer work, mast designs, Sail plans, sourcing lead and foundry info. It’s basically been massive research and planning behind the scenes. We will be putting a video up about it soon that explains what we’re doing so do hold fast! I can put something up about the design of her, why we chose her or along then lines of that helps, I just didn’t think anyone would really care.l to be honest. Anyhow, it’s coming together which is good and as soon as we get the van done we’re off and into boat building! Can’t wait to be honest!
Hah! Thanks fella! Me too!! Got to sort the van first though. We will be putting an update up soon about her and the progress we have made. Super excited about the winter, it’s gonna be epic. Although a little cold!
Agreed! Let’s not read into it too much ay, it’s just a way of explaining they are at the top of their game. Just like the ac75’s are. It’s just a different game 👍

An awesome boat, great to see another iteration of updates to the old IMOCAs. Huge respect to people like James who sail around the world solo.
Thanks fella, yeah he’s a certified nutter!
Loved the tour and interview. Thanks Chris and James and all!

I know the furlers, nice bits of kit for sure however these were definitely Karvers from France.
@@SailHub ok, though I have seen both Karver & Facnor labels on KZ's before.
Thanks! Gonna stela the fuckulater for my boat😅
Every boat I’ve ever been on has them, they are always in labelled though, and catch me out when I’m not expecting it! 😂
I could name my wife that - would not last long on this earth though..
I think the technical term for the fuckulater is a tricing line.👍
Ahh, that’s a shame 😂👍
Interesting interview but I followed to the boat rebuild im guessing the van has taken over and it’s been dropped

why there is no feet driven coffegrinders?
feet are stronger and less affected on the boat
That’s true, I think it’s because when those IMOCA guys are single handing they need to be on their feet to multi task quickly.
@@SailHub yeah, but for double handed routes it might be nice to have that option
@pironiero agreed! It sure would! I guess they have to build them for every eventuality.
IMOCAs are super cool, but I'd say they are more like a touring car in comparison with the AC75 being F1 and SailGP being Indycar...
Fair enough, just a way of stating they are at the top of their game 👍

IMOCA 60's are more like WRC cars. AC75's are the Formula 1 analog.
Kinda… apart from the single person aspect. 😉
@@SailHub fair enough. But 1 person for 90 days....not 3 hours
