Worst Roof Ever Installed!?!? (part 2)

  • AND YOU WONDER WHY I HAVE A CHANNEL ABOUT ROOFING!!! This homeowner asked me to take a look at the poorly installed roof/soffit/fascia/ and gutters after they decided to go with a lower bid. What I found changed me. I'm not sure if I will ever be the same after seeing this. This is pure heart break to me. I cannot believe that people out there treat homeowners this way. He could've looked at the packaging or watched any video on UA-cam. The leaders of my hater herd would do a better job than this guy. .

Basement casanova my guess is the judge had little sympathy for her because she probably knew the guy was unlicensed in the first place. This was a homeowner looking to cheap out as much as possible, she got what she paid for honestly. It is everyone's responsibility to use common sense in situations and do some research, but she obviously didn't care about if the guy was insured or licensed, just the price point. Sorry to be a jerk but I say tough shit, she learned a valuable lesson.

The landlord at my last place bought a century-old factory and "fixed it up" himself to turn into apartments. He sprayed cement spackle all over the door frames, and used styrofoam to fill holes in the exterior walls and then spackled over top. When I had my satellite dish installed, the installer told me my landlord "fixed" the leaking roof by nailing blue dollar store tarp over rotten wood and crumbling tar.

wow... I've only done roofing one time in my life (for a community service project) and it seems I know more than whoever did this job. How did he *not* know how ice and water shield works at 3:46??? Did he think you just unroll it and toss it on the roof and it will be fine???
That actually might be one of the stupidest and worst mistakes I've seen from this video yet.

Over here on the west coast right on the ocean, we use only stainless coil nails only due to salt corrosion, also our own policy is we don't use any osb...(oriented strand board) for those that dont know what osb stands for. only plywood 5 ply minimum. Or 5/8 ply ...osb is not good in our climate. Can't believe the fascia you pulled off...lol...but unlicensed people get away with that kind of Job all the time.

Osb sucks in any climate. They use it here in Indy and as soon as it gets wet it swells and then disintegrates. I refuse to use it on any exterior project. I won't use it for subfloors either.

I don't know if it matters to others, but the "wood" looks like OSB. I think you know where I'm heading with this. OSB is a product that I personally would never use-especially on a roof!!! If it manages (somehow) to get wet, it tends to wick up water big-time, and fragment much more easily than plywood would!

hey buddy for the plumbing boot I like to cut the bottom shingle to go over where the three exposed nails are and just tar everything so you don't have any nails exposed and you have the one below tucked underneath far enough. I just don't like to have exposed nails on a shingle roof at all. An added touch is cutting a small slit in the middle of the bottom so that the water doesn't pool up. Many If I had a shed to do that would've been perfect to reuse those shingles-owens corning hold like a mother, but they are a pain to cut through. Happy roofing brother.

Always make sure to check with your local building department for permit requirements. Any legitimate contractor will not say permits are not required nor attempt to discourage getting the required permits. At minimum, check with the building department to see whether or not a permit is required...there's no charge for asking. A permit ensures that the work performed is checked by a building inspector. And it's one's protection when filing an insurance claim for subsequent damage (e.g. water damage...insurance companies usually refuse to pay if the work was completed without the required permit). The inspector will require substandard work to be corrected...and the contractor cannot charge you additional fees. Great video!
