Oh no, Luke is incredibly ignorant. He admits failing to understand the Dote app and its sales metrics. White girls make sales, POC girls have failed to promote sales, Dote cares about making sales and treats the white and black girls the same based on revenue. Teala Dunn was on the Fiji trip and has IG posts on Doteshopping when they were at Fiji. Why? Not just because she is black but because she had the follow count on the Dote app that generated sales revenue. Teala didn't scream racism because she received the attention she deserved based on her follow count and sales revenue promotion. Dote exists because white female UA-camrs massively promoted the Dote app in 2017/18 and had huge buy-through metrics that earned money for Dote. Then Dote was able to fund even more girls, even ones who barely promoted the app. White girls happily slept in small rooms on the early trips and were happy for the opportunity of a FREE trip. These POC girls like Vareena are spoiled, entitled, totally immature children who scream racism when in fact Dote has always grouped girls by actual earnings for their company. Hannah and Ellie have made 1000x more tracked sales on Dote via their followed accounts than all these POC girls put together. I totally agree with this video but it’s also a deep integrated idea of the white standard of beauty Also in media that if your one of these minority groups it becomes part of your brand inherently
Soph Va I study psyc, and this is actually a huge problem!! It’s been found that, for example, having a member of a minority group called a “successful black author” doesn’t actually help black authors, as it reinforces the narrative that the norm isn’t that black authors are successful. So essentially it’s still reinforcing stereotypes

thank you so much for speaking about this. i was a dote girl, and they posted pics from my trip a couple weeks ago on their insta with the caption "this is what dote looks like". it's honestly so embarassing bc our trip was 5 months ago, and they decide to post our photos after they get called out for racism. i also have a video up on my channel if you want to check it out, of my experience with the brand. it's unacceptable to be treating anyone like they are less and they need to apologize for their mistakes. they didn't even apologize to us or ask us if they could use our photos 5 months later!
11:01 so I know this is an old video but this part made me so emotional bc that’s what I went through. I’m a South-Asian girl with brown skin and dark hair and eyes. growing up, all the shows I watched were comprised of mostly Caucasian characters. if there ever was a brown character on TV, it was a smart/nerdy boy with a distinct accent. when I was younger, and still to this day, for Halloween I only really dressed up as “white” characters, since they were the ones who were seen as the cool heroes in every TV show. I’m so happy that movies with casts that include many POCs are being made, that don’t include stereotypes and show POCs as the heroes. thank you for mentioning this.
YES!! having white people speak about topics like this is how we get things to change - if the people doing this shit see people like them calling them out they may be more inclined to change some stuff.
Honestly, I stay away from most of the popular UA-camrs because as a Latina, I can not relate. I’ve seen a few videos from some of those girls and honestly they’re fake as hell. FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE SPEAKING OUT ABOUT THIS. i had the movie diversity chat with my mom about how there should be a more diverse cast and she argued “well, why can’t they just pick the people most qualified? why should they have to worry about diversity” and that argument made no sense to me, like yes you should pick people that are “qualified” but that doesn’t mean the other diverse groups aren’t just as much so

Thank you for being awesome! I'm so glad I found this video. Totally sharing this on my socials. As a woman who was not raised to see color, this video hit the nail right on the head. It's strange because I look white, but I'm actually Bohemian and Syrian...it's so weird. The point of view I see. My favorite thing to do is call out people who are actively being racist. Sadly I am treated better than other people sometimes, because I am so white. I love to smile at them and then somehow integrate into the conversation how I am actually half Arabic and that I absolutely hate it when people pay attention to color like it fucking matters at all. And then try to somehow make the people who were treated wrongfully feel better, or help them in some way. This world is so crazy, if everyone would just be nice to one another, it wouldn't be so bad.
thank u so much for using ur platform to talk about this! I really apprecite it. We need more asians/indians/middle easterns they barely get represented. More latinos/ Hispanics as well and black women especially dark skinned and we need more natives
I agree with you speaking about this topic even as a white person. If everyone white stays silent, then it's hard to show that everyone is aware and receptive of this massive issue in both media and real life. Spreading the message that white people do recognise this/need to recognise this too is a great message!
I will say that there are popular youtubers who are black like Jackie Aina, Eva Gutowski (idk if she counts) Alyssa Forever, Rickey Thompson, Kianna, Patricia Bright. But you only think there are none because you don’t watch them bc you aren’t their target audience(which is okay!!). But they are out there! :) Also this video was SO well done!! the only show on netflix that i remember have diversity in their cast is blackmirror. For show that has such a bleak and cynical look towards technology in the future, it's really nice to see that (maybe) racism doesn't exist in the future. Btw i personally don't understand why companies would do this, it's so stupid and reckless. I'm glad the girls who were treated unfairly spoke out, more power to you all.
So I love Star Trek and one of the biggest thing about the franchise is they weren't afraid of diversity even in 1966. One of the main characters is Chekov, and he's Russian. This was during the Cold War, and people were freaking out. Nichelle Nichols played Uhura, and she wanted to leave the show. Martin Luther King Jr., yes the civil rights leader, convinced her to stay on the show [1]. This was one of the first shows to have an interracial kiss in the US a little over a year after interracial marriage was legalized [2]. I remember watching the shows for the first time 3 years ago, and I was shocked to see such a diverse group of people in one room. It's so rare to see Asian and Russian characters - especially as the good guys - on TV. I think people believe that we have come so far now, so racism doesn't exist, but that isn't true. In 2013, A Cheerios commercial got backlash for featuring an interracial couple. The company had to turn off the comments section [3]. Interracial marriage has been legal for about 52 years, and people still mistreat these couples. I think Star Trek was the best thing for me even though I'm Indian and there aren't many Indian characters in any of the shows. It made me understand people's struggles more, and it really made me feel happy. I noticed Hollister used to be like that. Years ago, whenever I walked in to Hollister, all the people that worked there were white skinny good looking people. The same thing on the website all the models were the same type of people. Hollister also only used to produce small clothing sizes for skinny people. I remember watching a video from girls and guys that used to work for that company and they exposed how picky Hollister used to be when hiring employees. I have noticed a change and every time I walk in their store or go on their website, I see a lot of diversity now a days. There is a high chance they had to deal with law suits for being racist and discriminating people. That is probably why they change they way the do business.
I love the message of this video! Just a few discombobulated things I thought about while watching: -saying that ‘all the big youtubers are white’ might be applicable to western countries, but different countries have their different UA-cam celebrities. Some of the biggest youtubers on the platform cater to non-English speaking peoples (off the top of my head juegogerman) making it difficult to reach a culture where people think English is all they need. So it’s not that people of different races don’t have popular content- it’s just that immigrants/minorities don’t have enough content created specifically for them. -hmm so why aren’t they represented? for immigrants at least, it’s like you’re stuck in between two different cultures - you don’t really fit into either. So you just have to wait for a critical amount of immigrants to move in/represent until your culture blends with another culture. Obv this takes time, and people definitely need to push for representation- but until a critical mass is reached, can a society really integrate another subculture? Idk interesting things to think about (obv I can’t speak to the black experience here which is a wholllle different issue) -movies like crazy rich Asians did well in western countries but totally flopped in China. People who are majorities in other countries are minorities in others, and racism definitely goes both ways (e.g. white actors in kdramas? naw) -ig it’s easy to say that white supremacy is the root of the problem (which it def is to some extent) but the bigger issue is tribalism in general. People of all races gravitate to what they know. -and yeah, as a minority living in a white dominated country myself, there are a lot of cultural/social barriers are at play that we should work to break down. Just trying to extend the debate/go beyond the white-centric conversation a lil -I totally understand that you’re speaking to the issues in your own country! I just think the problem goes deeper than white people v. others -lol idk if that even makes sense?
I’m very glad you spoke about this bc honestly I would’ve had no idea the dotechella thing/a lot of other stuff even happened. I’m definitely going to look more into these amazing ladies bringing light to these issues thank u thank u thank u

Luke is being a white Uncle Tom and hating on white girls and one company economically supported by white girls. Half his facts are wrong. He does not even understand how the Dote app works.

MsBlondeYo that’s you. That doesn’t mean others can’t take it to heart smh.

The crazy thing is that it's specifically white, skinny, stereotypically attractive ABLED people. They're not just missing out people of colour, they're missing out people with disabilities too, which automatically puts them in the 'other' category as far as fair representation in media goes.
Yes. We need allies. White allies specifically. I thank you for acknowledging your white privilege and using your voice to open the eyes of you skin folks to this privilege.
Иван Сергей Now sir it’s sad that you think this way....I mean do you realize how ignorant you sound??? Black aren’t asking for white people to bow down and kiss our feet. We’re just simply asking them to recognize other races situations before they use their “white privilege”. I mean did you even read her message. “ALLIES” do you know what that word means??? It means ‘A state formally cooperating with another for a military or other purpose”. Get your head outta your ass and be a better person.

Also in media that if your one of these minority groups it becomes part of your brand inherently

It's important for everyone from different ethnic or racial background to talk about these topics. It opens up a conversation where we can educate one another and understand where people are coming from. Being silent about these type of topics aren't going to improve the situation. Thank you for building the courage to talk about this issue. I truly respect white people who are aware of their privileges and do use their privileges to try and change the injustice in the system of today's society.
You're so right. People are quick to judge a person based on things that are way out of their control rather than who they are as a person. It sucks but it's slowly getting better 👌
anyway diversity shouldnt be something on a pedestal it should be normalized and accepted bc we're all people and thats the real tea..
For me, it really doesn’t matter the colour of your skin, the fact that you are making a video and using your platform to speak about this issue is very much all I need.

I personally like youtubers who make videos about society and who focus on telling why thing x is happening and what they personally think about it and also give some facts and statistic about it and have a straight to the point -kind of style to presentate their concepts and ideas. I don't really care about vlogs or trendy videos.

thank you so much for speaking about this. i was a dote girl, and they posted pics from my trip a couple weeks ago on their insta with the caption "this is what dote looks like". it's honestly so embarassing bc our trip was 5 months ago, and they decide to post our photos after they get called out for racism. i also have a video up on my channel if you want to check it out, of my experience with the brand. it's unacceptable to be treating anyone like they are less and they need to apologize for their mistakes. they didn't even apologize to us or ask us if they could use our photos 5 months later!
Coming from a black girl, I love that he decided to speak up and speak his opinion.

I absolutely agree and I’m so pleased you made this video I think the way you went about it was really smart and kind x
YES!! having white people speak about topics like this is how we get things to change - if the people doing this shit see people like them calling them out they may be more inclined to change some stuff.
hey luke i love all of what you do your awesome and beautiful and i love the subjects you talk about and your personality 💖

As a white teen girl thank you! I hate seeing things like this there are enough photos and media focusing on people like me other people need that screen time!

I agree with you speaking about this topic even as a white person. If everyone white stays silent, then it's hard to show that everyone is aware and receptive of this massive issue in both media and real life. Spreading the message that white people do recognise this/need to recognise this too is a great message!
I will say that there are popular youtubers who are black like Jackie Aina, Eva Gutowski (idk if she counts) Alyssa Forever, Rickey Thompson, Kianna, Patricia Bright. the only show on netflix that i remember have diversity in their cast is blackmirror.
Thank you for making this! The more we talk about this, the more awareness is created on these issues!
It is such a delight to watch these kind of videos from you :) Much appreciated sir! Hope to comment again after I finished watching

Thank you for this video! We need everyone of all races to speak out about these issues. Love your channel, keep it up! 🧡‼️
The fact that you included trans girls in there is so beautiful. THEY ARE GIRLS! I just found your channel and its the best.
Diversity and equality needs to be made ❤️
I love the message of this video! Just a few discombobulated things I thought about while watching:
-saying that ‘all the big youtubers are white’ might be applicable to western countries, but different countries have their different UA-cam celebrities.
Idk interesting things to think about (obv I can’t speak to the black experience here which is a wholllle different issue)
-movies like crazy rich Asians did well in western countries but totally flopped in China. People who are majorities in other countries are minorities in others, and racism definitely goes both ways (e.g. white actors in kdramas? naw)
-ig it’s easy to say that white supremacy is the root of the problem (which it def is to some extent) but the bigger issue is tribalism in general. People of all races gravitate to what they know.
-and yeah, as a minority living in a white dominated country myself, there are a lot of cultural/social barriers are at play that we should work to break down. Just trying to extend the debate/go beyond the white-centric conversation a lil
-I totally understand that you’re speaking to the issues in your own country! I just think the problem goes deeper than white people v. others
-lol idk if that even makes sense?
Throughout this ENTIRE video I was screaming “PERIODTTT” because you really explained things so well!

i live in a very white and privileged area with a lot of rich people. i try to be as open minded as possible, but some people literally make me want to punch them in the face. my friend was friends with a guy and she wanted me to come to the mall with them cuz they didn’t want to go alone. he was very sexist and small minded the whole time and i kept calling him out and telling him to stop. he didn’t take it seriously. but then we were eating lunch. he stole my friends phone and opened house party and joined a video chat with two girls in our grade (i’m good friends with one of them and she happens to be asian). he was being annoying and my friend and i were trying to get back her phone. i grabbed it and started apologizing and right before i hung up he screamed “ching chang chong!” i dead ass in the middle of the mall started SCREAMING at him. luckily she didn’t hear it and i snapped her after telling her how mad i was at him. this is just one example. white kids use the n word call people derogatory terms and are generally very small minded and ignorant. the worst part is they don’t even realize how bad it is. the kid i was talking about before didn’t understand why i was mad at him in the first place. he was like you’re not asian why do you care? people. need. to. realize. it. is. 2019. and. open. up. their. goddamn. minds.

Love this video! And love that you mentioned how you felt you didn't have a right to speak on this. It's so important to remind people that you don't have to be part of a situation to empathize and give your opinion. It's funny how people who spread hate, intolerance, and promote ignorance are the LOUDEST about everything and anything, but people on the opposite end sometimes question and hesitate to speak up with the same fire because they worry about it not being "their issue". Life is everybody's issue. I stan
