Why YouTubers & Influencers Can't Take Constructive Criticism (exposing the truth)

  • so recently I gave constructive criticism to a social media influencer / UA-camr on twitter and they chose to respond in an immature and nasty manner and repeated to do so towards me along with the help of their followers and that is what promoted me to make this video. I hope you all know that this goes beyond them and some petty drama, this situation and video speaks on how social media influencers and UA-camrs don't know how to take constructive criticism and it's something that is a real issue here on the internet so I thought I would touch some light on this issue.
I hope you enjoyed this video and if so please give it a thumbs up and share it, and I'd love to hear your opinion in the comments. Also don't forget to subscribe and turn the bell on and I hope to see y'all in my next video
    with love:
    -Luke

Instead of not replying, but the way he responded was immature and I do understand why you were so heated about it

Twitter is just a no. It's too much drama on there. You can't agree to disagree. Everyone has an opinion. Some present opinions as facts. It's all uncalled and draining. I stay off of it as often as possible. Keeps me less stress and less worked up over things that have little to no significance in my day to day.

I'm not a fan of Thomas but when you start a comment with "ummm" and end it with a passive aggressive "u do u sis", that's IS very rude and NOT constructive. It shuts the recipient off to any actual critique because it is a straight attack and causes people to be defensive.
If you simply said "I dont think it's right to make merch off of depression" that's different.
I dont believe you should be getting any hate either way. Btw found your videos recently. I quite enjoy them.

Yes that rubbed me the wrong way as well. Also I didn’t like how he couldn’t admit that he was wrong in the actual twitter conversation... like I get it, it’s hard to backtrack but I think it’s weird how he’s so adamant that he’s so good with taking criticism and owning up to his mistakes but in this situation obviously couldn’t.

It is true that the fact that Twitter only allows a limited amount of characters influences the way we message people. Your comment, for someone who probably is used to getting attack, might seem a little agresive. I do think you should have informed yourself a better before making that comment. However, Thomas, in my opinion, could have solved this situation with a simple no offensive response. But he chose to make a big deal about it on purpose, which is not right at all. This shouldn't have escalated to that level. I understand where you were coming from with your comment and I do not believe that you had bad intentions with it. (Sorry for my english).

i definitely agree with the fact that influencers can’t see the difference between constructive criticism and hate. he definitely should have responded better but he also should have understood that this proves that he has viewers all over the world! so if someone who doesn’t live where he does and most of his fan base, they might not understand the culture or references in my opinion

the points you're making are absolutely valid, nevertheless i do think your intial tweet was worded quite standoffish and might have been part of the reason why thomas tried his damnest to answer with some kind of clap back.
communication via text is so prone to misunderstandings and misreadings in tone, but it's all made worse when people try to save face when confronted with criticism by reacting immaturely/rudely; especially on twitter, which is known as a breeding ground for drama and petty arguments over virtually nothing.
i agree with previous comments saying you could've taken a somewhat kinder approach in critiquing thomas (more along the lines of how you paraphrased your tweet in this video) or could've made it clear you weren't aware this sad boi thing was a character, but the way some of his followers tried to turn things around on you by accusing you of profiting off your video about mental illness is downright ridiculous- you said it yourself, the money you make from yt by producing content is nothing like selling an actual product to your followers.

I totally agree with you on the main point of the video.
BUT, your first comment on his merch was not just based on disinformation (which is fine, you understood that and it happens to everybody), but it was also sassy. He was immature, no doubt about that, but you have to admit that the opinion you had about him has influenced the wording of your critique. Try to immagine: someone you don't know express an opinion you think it's not valid (because it's based on the wrong premises) and it is also kinda of rude and cheeky and self-promoting. I get that your first instict is to use sarcasm.
With that being said, that doesn't excuse everything that came after.

When someone like you appear to tell them “hey maybe this is not as right as you think” they instantly feel attacked and start using derogatory things to say to you because it makes them feel better. it's so hard to have a mature conversation / constructive argument with people these days, especially on twitter. certain individuals are quick to get defensive when they don't like what other people got to say 😒😒😒

i know you said to not comment before video ended. but halfway through I already agree 100% I hate this "clout" term first off all, sounds like a disease second, now no influencer cant do anything without it being "for clout". please never change. please don't ever let UA-cam fame get to you. we need souls like you to stay on this channel. ❤

I think your only mistake was linking the vid. maybe if you would of thrown a "made a video on this topic recently" he might not of reacted in that way. I'm guessing he thought you linked for 'likes and engagement' off his merch post. either way, love ya.

Dude I’m a fan and I agree with the message that mental health issues are being wrongly profited from and that it needs to stop, but this was hard to watch. He shouldn’t have responded so harshly - it’s childish - but you doing this and picking apart every little word he said and justifying what you said is childish too. This drama should have stayed on Twitter, I didn’t sub for drama; I subbed for some comedy (like those coachella and met gala vids) as well as some deep-dives (like the original mental health in media video).

It's always hard talking to people who always look for negative intent in very ambiguous situations.
I had a roommate, I love her so much but she always attacked before explaining her side to people and she always came across as a very immature and aggressive person. Now that we're older I think she understands that you can't "win" when you react the way she did.
I love that you acknowledged the fact that you didn't understand what "sad boy" meant and I can see how it can easily be mistaken for "the romanticizing of mental illness" and also the whole Twitter bio. How he and the "sidekick" reacted was really: 😬.
    Anyway, well done. 👌🏼

mona barathi I agree but just because someone comes at you doesn’t mean you should do it back. I think in a way they were both immature and none of it is acceptable since you should turn the other cheek.

i definitely understand why you thought it was romanticizing depression (although i do disagree with that and achknowledge that you also changed ur opinion on that) but maybe if you had critiqued him more respectfully he wouldn't have reacted so defensively (he was def wrong for doing that). idk u preached a lot abt respectful constructive criticism at the end of the video but imo i don't think your comment was THAT respectful :/ i'm not defending him cuz idrk him or anyone involved in yt dramas and shit but that's just how i view this whole debacle

I agree with you on most of the points you make, but I think the fact that you sort of were passive aggressive/dismissive sounding in your constructive criticism(ie but you do you sis)and that caused him to have a stronger reaction rather than just politely saying it was a character and you might have misunderstood. I do agree if he was more mature he would have still responded in a polite manner to criticism but obviously not everyone can. I myself try to be good at taking constructive criticism, or even if I disagree, have a civil discussion but it can still come off as defensive. So yes, I agree he comes off as entitled influencer but I think there’s a better way of presenting criticism where it’s constructive rather than just pointing out flaws. Just some constructive criticism for your constructive criticism -sincerely a art major (where your soul and reason for being is constantly subjectively criticized 😂)

this is why i like u, i didn't think that it was profiting off of mental illness in the first place but i appreciate your opinion. i followed thomas for a while but unfollowed since he started getting in to drama. i like the creators i look up to to take criticism and not just build a career around pettiness and unnecessary drama. great vid as always!
