I actually upgraded my hunstman V2 with GMK keycaps and lubed the stock switches and stabilizers. It feels pretty damn decent, works with the rest of my razer ecosystem, and has dedicated media keys- that's hard to find on higher end custom board kits. it's the best keyboard for me- a gamer, that really only types youtube comments.

To be fair the huntsman is a very different keyboard to the blackwidow. It's an optical keyboard so there isn't that much different to do. It also uses stabilisers that are cherry style and has a standard bottom row.
I can’t wait for Squashy to throw away everything except for the pcb. Then throw away the pcb because he wants gamer hotswap.

I just found out about custom keyboards form Glarses and its opened my eyes and through his videos i came here. I've learned so much in such a short amount of time. Thanks guys o.o. I'm currently using a Razor huntsman elite but after typing on everything i just liked the feel of the cherry mx browns. I've been enlightened though. Don't hate me! I didn't know any better! But now i'm interested in either modding it or making my own... hmmm...

I started from listening to different ASMR videos and came across wildcat's channel, then started watching his keyboard builds, then I think I went to Hipyo from there and then the rabbit hole commenced.
I've been a fan of the Custom Keyboard for a while now (About 2 years ago) But I still have the same thought. I think it's better to mod your pc rather than to get another one. I recently got myself a huntsman elite, and I really love the Clicly Switches. Just some adjustments like the foam mod where the key to get the perfect keyboard (In my mind)

Thank you so much bro, I have an OG Razer Blackwidow Ultimate from 2012 with the blue LEDs and blue Cherry MX switches. Very much looking forward to using it as my entry into modding and soldering. I greatly appreciate you showing the process in such detail
tbh, Blackwidow Chroma's chasis is one of the best I've ever used. You don't easily find custom chassis with macro keys and some additional ergonomic features.
Gaming keyboards would be good if they just had hotswap.

Razer making a hotswap would be pretty dope. Easy introduction into the custom keyboard world without blowing up their banking accounts (unless they immediately jump into doing CNC work without the equipment which is usually hella expensive if you don't already have tooling + machinery for it, but they can afford it tbh...)

I remember when I first got my PC and I decided to spend a lot of money on a Razer Deathstalker and then a few years later I spent half the price on an Anne Pro 2 and that made me realise that just because you spend more money, it doesn't mean its going to be better.

I just really liked how black widows looked, I will say I wish it was hot swappable and with the leds inside the pcb
so yeah they are not swappable but it is actually not that hard to change the switches with a razer keyboard. I tried it with my blackwidow v3 and it sounds better now. Just do every step as shown in the video

Almost the same, got mine for ten bucks on fbm absolutely trashed, missing switches and melted keycaps, so of course I just shoved some outemu reds I had on hand in between the Razer greens

There's a place for clicky switches, the older designs (Alps, buckling springs, etc) are great and the box navies/jade sound nice. I think the cherry style ones suck tho, they sound like they are filled with sand 🤮🤮

I can't believe that old Razer keyboard was still working .. well sort of working. In over 25 years of typing on PCs, the worst keyboards I've ever had in terms of longevity were also the most expensive ones. I've used MS's Internet Keyboard for years and years (the one with all the extra buttons up top) and other than having to pull all the keycaps every year or so to put them into the dishwasher, I never had a problem with that one. It just worked and kept working for years and years. It still works today.
I had used OG Cherry keyboards back in the 90s already and always loved the feel and sound of mechanical switches (clicky ones, yes). So I went for a Corsair K90 Vengeance a few years ago when I built my Haswell system. Loved the look and feel of that thing, but it did develop massive ghosting issues a few months after the warranty expired. Switched to a cheap MS Sidewinder X4 which also simply worked and still works, but I wanted to get back into mechanicals. Tried a HyperX Alloy Elite (non RGB) with MX Browns at the store and instantly loved those switches. Bought it at a decent price, then let it sit for two years in a drawer, unopened and unused. When I took it out this March to finally use it with my new 12th-gen-build, it pretty much instantly had issues with ghosting/double/triple/whatever keystrokes on certain keys. No more warranty, so I tried to work around it using all sorts of SW-fixes in Windows, but it never really let me type a text without a ton of unwanted keystrokes.
I started looking around for decently priced, mechanical, alternatives that would fit with my build and since I'm already using a Razer Viper 8K and found a V3 Black Widow (wired) for around €85, I went with that one. So far, it's been great ... layout is good (keys aren't too tightly spaced), feel of the Razer Greens is very nice and clicky and, so far, it's been ghosting-free. The larger keys do sound a bit weird and clunky and I certainly wouldn't recommend it at MSRP (140, 150? yikes!), but for under €/$90 it's a pretty good deal.
Still: I have most of my "replacement" keyboards I needed whenever a mechanical one died on me sitting around here, starting with that MS Internet keyboard from the late 90s/early 2000s, the Sidewinder X4 and a Turtle Beach Impact 100. All of which were dirt-cheap to pretty cheap and are non-mechanical... and all of which still work to this very day, while the "premium" stuff from Corsair and HyperX simply croaked after way too short service lives.
I would love to meet this lady in the depths of the subway as well.
Crazy the quality that you pay for with Razer when you can build something tremendously more custom and higher quality for 30% less money. So nice.

yo man thanks for the kind words! as long as your keyboard has N-key rollover then all inputs will be registered. also, maybe look into getting Gateron Clear switches as they are one of the lightest switches in the mech scene and they basically actuate by bushing on them. should increase your kps

I actually did something similar with my Corsair k95. I lubed all of the switches (reds) with krytox 205g0 as well as with the stabilizers. I also did the holee mod as well. Took forever because of all the keys and macros, but much netter.

Honestly, up until the last few months or so, I always preferred the sound of clicky, rattly keyboards. Mostly because I've been using one for like 10 years, and it was always such a breath of fresh air after being stuck with membrane keyboards for my whole life up until that point. But I'm really hooked on this modern take on keyboards - cleaning up the sound as much as possible and making the sound of your keyboard more refined. I kinda want to try lubing up my Corsair keyboard.
Was kind of thinking of just buying an HP GF100 and changing out the switches + lubing. And this video has just proved that that can make it SO much thockier
ive been using an rk71 for about (with mx red switches) and i havnt had any problems with it, it may be a budget keyboard but it definatly punches about its weight class

new sub. came looking for this vid purly because i still have my old black widow ultimate and thinking of upgrading it cos its cheeper than building a new one and adicted to my hobby.
I recently spilled water on my Blackwidow 2019 and a few keys broke (either not responsive or infinite & uncontrollable key reg on press). It had served me well after 2 yrs so I immediately upgraded to Blakcwidow V3, rather than going through all this trouble of opening it, cleaning and reassembling, only to find out it might not be something repairable by myself.
I understand that by not making their keyboards spill-proof or easy to open and repair, and by having to buy a new one, I'm paying that razer tax. But it surprised me that keyboards at the same tier from other brands either cost a lot more, offering fewer features or at least not as new.

Sound portfolio is completely personal preference though. The black switches are quieter, but the clacky sound of the Razer keyboard is a classic. I personally still use a Razer blackwidow v1 Chroma TKL, and just bought new PBT keycaps for it. It renewed and brought my keyboard back to life, and I still enjoy the clacky keyboard. I've used the linear switches, and I couldn't get use to it when typing quickly because I wasn't able to get the same cues as from the clicky keyboard from the clicky typing.
