Captain Dave, thank you for sharing your profound knowledge on this video. Clipping part of the bait's tail off to slow down is a priceless tip. I fish the jetties in Washington, we catch rockfish/greenlings to use as live bait for a lingcod. Fishing a live bait from the jetty had been very difficult, because I can't really dictate where my bait swims down to, yet I need to present my bait near the bottom for lings. Most of the times, my live bait would swim right into the rocks and get snagged up (5 out of 10 casts). I have rigged a bait under a balloon or a big bobber but wasn't that productive. I have tried dropper loop rigs but a live bait would drag the weight and swim into rocks. I have lost shit ton of greenlings/rockfishes and countless tackles but still managed to catch several 15 pound + lingcods. I would love to fish from a boat and drop my bait down vertically like you guys, but fishing the jetty makes the fishing more challenging and much more rewarding! Once again, I really appreciate all your educational videos. I swear I just got better at fishing by listening to you.😁
I've done exactly this setup and other suggestions, yet still, the Yellowtail have rocked me -they're quik SOBs, and ya gotta get'em outta the rocks very quickly once the hook is set!
@@Stickyfingers420 Ha! Not they are not, and neither are the White Seabass! I've been fishing them for years on my Boston Whaler outta the Channel Isl Harbor on the backside of Anacapa isl and Santa Cruz isl- nothing like fishing with the (candy bait) live squid!
@@markh.2899 hey Mark! I’m fishing out of Channel Islands harbor as well, just wondering where you get the live squid at? Hook a brotha up ! (Pun intended)
@@senpais.1830Very cool, Senpai! I used to get my live squid from either CISCOS or Capt Hooks (it's been a while, so I'm not sure if Hooks is still in bus) in the harbor at their bast wells, The bait boat for CISCOS used to be (and probably still is) the Traveler, and you can ask them if they have any or know of anybody who does. And, if nobody had any bait, and the squid was in the area, I just meter them and drop a squid jig and make my own bait.. Good luck out there, and let me know how you do!
@@markh.2899 perfect, will do! Thanks for all the help, I’ll get out there this weekend and see if I can find any. Always was curious about fishing for squid as well, so honestly I might be trying that out sooner than later when the opportunity presents itself. Thanks again and will update!
ok another question , is your main line use to make dropper loop , most all my pole have 50lbs mono , or should i put a 40/60 fluorocarbon as the drops loop on the 50lbs mono .?
I don't know about anyone else but when Frank Zappa's giving solid advise like this I'm listening. Good advice but I could hardly keep my eye's off that rod. It looks like a compound bow had a one night stand with a rod and I want one of their Illegitimate offspring.
Thanks for the tips man, going out on my first half day on sat. Been fishin salt water a few years got some short white sea bass, couple halis and lots of bass but never gone out on a boat. Been studying your videos for the last 4 days and I think I got a grasp on what I’m doing👍 any other tips for my first half day out of Oceanside?
Ask the captain how to rig up for the day,Do what he says and you will catch,Listen to no one but the captain that's the biggest Tip,He is the only person that knows what you going to be fishing for. He wants to catch fish more than you do. His whole life is about catching you fish. If that is not the Captain on the boat you go on,Go on another boat.
Depending on the wind and drift, I'll cast a bit up-current to stay over the marked fish by the time my weight hit the bottom...There's nothing worse than hitting the bottom and your line is straight out horizontal.
@@Badapple414 How is that wrong when I cast up current/wind, and by the time my sinker hits the bottom (180ft/30 fathoms), my line is directly under my boat and on the fish?
@@markh.2899 Just drop it. Straight down. If you were suppose to cast it it would be called a caster loop, but its called a dropper loop. Just drop it straight down. 👇
@@Badapple414 - you’re an idiot, if there is a strong current and you drop straight down the current will take your bait and weight down current and away from the boat. The only way to overcome this is to put on a heavier weight or you can cast a little bit up current
