In 1998 I was 21, working in the in-between department at Fox Animation in Phoenix on Titan AE. John Hoffman (now head of story on Inside Out 2) brought in a bootleg VHS of Princess Mononoke (in Japanese, no subtitles) and it completely blew me away. The direction and storytelling on the film is so good we could follow it without understanding a single word. About 4 years later I discovered Moebius at SDCC while sifting through books at a vendor selling French comics. Again, the direction and storytelling was so good I didn’t need to be able to understand the language. What sets these two apart is more than just style and craft, but a deep understanding of the human condition and an ability to share that effectively with others. No wonder they had a creative bromance with each other.

Their connection is a very unique one that has a lot more interesting nuances that doesn't normally get discussed, but is something I've been digging into personally for my next project. I can't wait to share what I've been working on once it's complete.
This just tells me we all need someone to believe in us, no matter our brilliance and genius. We lock our minds away because of self doubt. We all need a Toshio Suzuki in our lives.
Thank you so much for talking about Nausicaa! I remember borrowing all the issues of Nausicaa from my local library and reading them all in go and just being in awe of how much detail in the art, story and world building there is. It was an experience that I hold dearly in my heart.
It is a fantastic series, practically every panel is like an old school wood cut or copper plate print of old. Telling a great story backed by some fantastic world building. At the same time a bit old school but future looking a bit like a sci-fi interplanetary romance or post apocalyptic book from the 1910's and 1920's (they exist).
For those who might be interested, "Ghibli" is an Italianised rendering of the Libyan pronunciation (with a hard inital "G") of the Arabic "qibliyy" (the name of a desert wind). The story goes something like Miyazaki thought the word was cool but the transliteration "Giburi" sounded too much like "a rumbling stomach" so the pronunciation was changed to "Jiburi". So either pronunciation is fine! Thanks for yet another awesome video Matttt!
The Nausicaa manga is my absolute favorite work of Miyazaki's, due to its epic & nuanced art, story, characters, and action. It really was one of the best written and drawn comics ever made. SOOOO glad I bought the hardback edition.
His early work is by far my favorite of his, and my favorite anime/manga in general. Nausicaa and Lupin Castle of Cagliostro are probably my favorite anime, above even Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, Akira, and Cowboy Bebop. The Nausicaa manga rivals my other favorites like Berserk, Akira, and Sanctuary. Ive seen/read lots of more niche lesser known anime/manga that are amazing and I love, but these are my favorites. Interesting fact most people in the west first saw Miyazakis work in the arcade game Cliffhanger which used scenes from Castle of Cagliostro to create an interactive film of sorts to compete with Dragons Lair.
Yet another excellent video! It's not as huge as naming his own daughter after the titular character, but Moebius has also drawn at least one Nausicaa-themed illustration. I can only imagine Miyazaki's joy!
I got hooked on Hayao Miyazaki's brilliance after watching Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind! It’s such a masterpiece that it led me to explore almost everything he’s created, like Castle in the Sky. If you’re diving deeper, don’t miss Isao Takahata’s works like Grave of the Fireflies or The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. There are also some lesser-known Studio Ghibli gems worth discovering!

I just read the title and knew you were talking about Nausicaa. Its the only manga I own a physical copy of and it is without a doubt, THE Miyuzaki masterpiece. Oh, not at all forgotten. Its my favorite manga of all time. It is art of the highest order and I recommend it all the time. Truly, some piece of soul is forever apart of that manga.
Shout out to Anno for animating those absolutely iconic and legendary explosions in the animated adaptation. Back then we loved drawing the insane hyper violence like in the anime at those times that just made you understand all bits of the human body.

I don't know if you take suggestions, but if you do could you add UKs Frank Bellamy & New Zealands Murry Ball to the list? Both are quite well known outside of the US, Bellamy during the 60s & 70s for his comics on tv shows & Murry Ball for FootRot Flats in the 80s & 90s.

I discovered this manga in 2015, during High School. It was the first manga I ever ready, and I want to say I'm so proud of this. Even to this day the story, the style and the world building are a strong influence for my works of art.😊
Nausicaa was the first Miyazaki/Ghibli movie that I watched, and fell in love immediately. Later when I found out how Anno animated the laser demolition sequences, it became all the more special!
Not only is Miyazaki a master animator and director, he's also a great video game developer as evidenced by the Souls series. Truly a master of all arts. /s

Matttt another good video. I believe that Nausicaa might be partially inspired by Dune at least since Incal was written by Jodorowsky that tried to make a Dune movie in the 70s that was dropped. Check his documentary, it is good.
I have many comics only few ever made an impact like Nausicaa. I was hospitalised when my mate Bernhard dropped by his entire collection... Once I recovered I bought my own set. Epic.
Any fan of fantasy, sci-fi or comics in general owes it to themselves to check out this story. I love the contrast between Nausicaa and her foil Kushana--the former is peace-loving and kind to everyone she meets, even her enemies, and the latter is a hard-bitten veteran warrior with a dim view of the world, but neither are portrayed as fully right or wrong in their beliefs, and both have moments of tenderness that will make you cry and moments of sheer badassery that will make you go "hell yeah". The story pulls no punches and really depicts the full spectrum of humanity.

Matttt, great work but you left out a very important previous work of Miyazaki, Future Boy Conan. This is based in a western novel from Alexander Keys´s, The Incredible Tide. There you will find some themes that we will refine in Nausicaa. If you look the aperture of the series were you see the planes called "Giants" you will see similarities with the God Warriors destroying the world in a nuclear war.

Miyazaki and Moebius became such good friends that Moebius named his daughter Nausicaa. I'm honestly so shocked just how underappreciated the Nausicaa manga is (at least outside of japan). I love the movie but the manga is just such a giant beautiful epic and I personally think is the best thing Miyazaki has ever made. It kinda reminds me of Akira how Otomo made just a bit of the manga made the movie and went back to finish for the next years. I honestly believe that although the although I love the akira and Nausicaa films there manga version surpass them in every way
The art style reminded me of the late 18th through to early 20th century Woodcut and Copper plate prints that owed more to (and influenced) the William Morris arts and craft scene than "traditional", 'Neo romatisim' or the art deco/nouveau people normally associate with the end of that era. Bryan Talbot with his Luther Arkwright series did similar but leaned more into those better known traditions.
Nice video I really liked the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind animated movie and I was lucky enough to find the hardcover edition of the manga in a comic shop while being on vacation in Denmark about a decade ago and I freaking loved the manga and I hope that we can get a more faithful anime adaptation of the manga in the near future
The Nausicaä manga has an amazing message that the movie does not. A necessary read for fans of the movie and Ghibli. Also, Shuna's Journey by Miyazaki had similar landscapes to Nausicaä and Princess Mononoke.
Same, but they are becoming pretty well regarded. With the rise of anime popularity in the west and ghibli films including Nausicaa being shown again at movie theaters around the country many have experienced the greatness. Was so happy to see Nausicaa on the big screen, that was amazing. Reshowings of Ghibli films at theaters has become pretty popular, and not small ones but the big theater chains.
Please do a video on the 70s shoujo manga scene and how it revolutionised manga storytelling and themes. People nowadays dismiss it because of the art but so many popular manga nowadays would not exist if for the groundwork laid out by female mangaka.

I was waiting for this! In today's digital CGI animation, people have forgotten how beautiful hand drawn animation actually is. Hayao Miyazaki has made a mark in animation that simply cannot be overlooked. I am aware of only 2 manga he did. One is Naussica and other one is Shuna's journey. Both are highly recommended. And despite Naussica movie being so good, Naussicca Manga is vast and has depth which movie could not achieve
Miyazaki has some kind of magic. Each and every one of his works carries a shade of magic that resonates with something deep inside one's heart. Would like to recommend "How do you live" by Genzaburo Yoshino, Miyazaki's favourite book.
As a lifelong Ghibli fan, thank you for this video! TBH from the title, I assumed this would be about one of Miyazaki’s earliest and obscurest works, “Sabaku no Tami” or “People of the Desert”. He published it under the pen name Akitsu Saburō in a magazine that was a publication of the Japanese Communist Party. It’s interesting to look at as a sort of prototype of Nausicaa - Pejite, a kingdom in Nausicaa, appears as a location in it, though its setting is more akin to Shuna’s more grounded Central Asian-inspired setting.

With hard G it also sounds a lot like "doomed" (gibly) in East Slavic languages so Jibli sounds less... negative.
The official katakana transcription is ジブリ, with the first syllable (mora) read as "ji", so the soft G is technically the correct sound

Its like akira in the sense that the movie only covered the first two volumes and the story was vastly different

The art style reminded me of the late 18th through to early 20th century Woodcut and Copper plate prints that owed more to (and influenced) the William Morris arts and craft scene than "traditional", 'Neo romatisim' or the art deco/nouveau people normally associate with the end of that era. Bryan Talbot with his Luther Arkwright series did similar but leaned more into those better known traditions.

Hayao Miyazaki has some of the best animation ever but he mastered lot and he was real GOAT of anime history along with Osamu Tezuka
Nice video I really liked the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind animated movie and I was lucky enough to find the hardcover edition of the manga in a comic shop while being on vacation in Denmark about a decade ago and I freaking loved the manga and I hope that we can get a more faithful anime adaptation of the manga in the near future

The Nausicaä manga has an amazing message that the movie does not. A necessary read for fans of the movie and Ghibli. Also, Shuna's Journey by Miyazaki had similar landscapes to Nausicaä and Princess Mononoke.
Same, but they are becoming pretty well regarded. With the rise of anime popularity in the west and ghibli films including Nausicaa being shown again at movie theaters around the country many have experienced the greatness. Was so happy to see Nausicaa on the big screen, that was amazing. Reshowings of Ghibli films at theaters has become pretty popular, and not small ones but the big theater chains.
I loved this video and have never seen comic art quite like that. Thank you for shining a light on it.

Please do a video on the 70s shoujo manga scene and how it revolutionised manga storytelling and themes. People nowadays dismiss it because of the art but so many popular manga nowadays would not exist if for the groundwork laid out by female mangaka.

I was waiting for this! In today's digital CGI animation, people have forgotten how beautiful hand drawn animation actually is. Hayao Miyazaki has made a mark in animation that simply cannot be overlooked. I am aware of only 2 manga he did. One is Naussica and other one is Shuna's journey. Both are highly recommended. And despite Naussica movie being so good, Naussicca Manga is vast and has depth which movie could not achieve
Nausicaa is my fave Miyazaki film. I love it so much... the intro song is so incredible.

Miyazaki has some kind of magic. Each and every one of his works carries a shade of magic that resonates with something deep inside one's heart.
Would like to recommend "How do you live" by Genzaburo Yoshino, Miyazaki's favourite book.
As a lifelong Ghibli fan, thank you for this video! TBH from the title, I assumed this would be about one of Miyazaki’s earliest and obscurest works, “Sabaku no Tami” or “People of the Desert”. He published it under the pen name Akitsu Saburō in a magazine that was a publication of the Japanese Communist Party. It’s interesting to look at as a sort of prototype of Nausicaa - Pejite, a kingdom in Nausicaa, appears as a location in it, though its setting is more akin to Shuna’s more grounded Central Asian-inspired setting.
