Thank you for this incredibly inspiring video. I did commission art for a while on the side of my real job, did that off and on for 12 years, then just after the pandemic I got told I had RA and osteoarthritis in my hands, I can't hold a pencil for long and I'm on painkillers and alot of meds, so this is very meaningful for me. There are new medicines that can really help RA, if you have a job with health insurance. But if not, you can still outsource the artwork. I found this at my public library a couple years ago. I had not heard about it and was so impressed and blown away. As an artist myself who loves the look of ordinary bic style pens, what a revelation of what can be achieved with that type of pen in the hand of such a creative and technically brilliant woman. So very good on all levels, the art, layout, pacing, story telling and connection with life. A real addition to the beauty of life, a work of art that adds to the joy of the world. Thank you for this video of recognition to her and thank you so much to Mrs Ferres!
I’m a writer who started much later. Still in school. Sometimes I wonder whether it’s worth it to create. I dunno if this video is God giving me a sign to keep going, but I greatly appreciate you putting out this video matttt because it has helped me a lot this morning.
Keep at it. I also started late. I always had a passing interest in storytelling and story in general, messed around a little (fanfics and goofy little stories), but never really considered it somewhat seriously until I was basically a senior in high school. It still took me another two years or so before I made serious attempts to apply myself and let me tell you, I sucked hard. I'm still not fully confident in most of the stuff I write, but sometimes I pleasantly surprise myself. Be kind and patient with yourself and I'm sure that your progress and effort will encourage you to continue pursuing this craft, even if only as a hobby.

Dude. I've had jack all success thus far. 10 books written, none published. A failed art career. And disabled my whole life, the past decade the worst. But this message was definitely what I needed to hear today. I'm starting another book soon. My brain is buzzing with happy a new inspiration, more trust in myself. And I adore comic books. I always wished I was the illustration kinda artist so I could write one and illustrate it myself. Sadly I'm better off as a sculptor.

I'm now on Amazon as I go, adding everything in your videos because I feel like I have some odd connection to them now. 9:25 rather famously (if you watched Ferris Bueler's Day Off anyway) A Sunday Afternoon is at the Art Institute in Chicago where she lives. She might have sat down in person to draw her version of it. The key to the success of the any piece of art is not only in its creation but in its marketing. This video does a great job of explaining how Emil Ferris created her opus, but it just slides past the critic reviews as though they were inevitable and not the key to her success. Sure if her product wasn't fantastic it wouldn't have made a splash, even with the best marketing. But it doesn't matter how amazing your creation is if no one knows that it exists. In my experience, that is the hardest part of becoming successful not the creation of the work.
I found this book randomly at the library years ago. No hype around never heard of it or it's author but immediately fell in love with it. So excited to read the second volume soon too.
Not sure if you're gonna read this but it would be cool if you did a video on Charles M Schulz (the creator of the Peanuts comic strips). He's just so intresting to me and he's one of the many people that inspire me to continue doing art! Thank you.
Despite finding unparalleled success and remaining grateful for it his whole life, he could never shake the feeling he was a down-on-his-luck outsider who was never really wanted. It’s the mix of sadness and wisdom he carried about him that made Peanuts what it is. He’d make a great video topic.
A friend alerted me to this work…. I bought it immediately… and immediately, I was accosted by its deeply dark, passionate and pure execution as a storytelling masterpiece…. It was and is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen in comics or modern illustration. I studied at the school of visual arts, where Art Sp. taught, among others…. Anyway…. This is proof that if you have something to say and you love to create…like, really love it… nothing can stop you… just an incredible story…
What an inspiring story , it teaches all creatives not to be discouraged by the latest trends in art styles, drawing or even colour ;but to hold onto the classics !!!
Wonderful video. I have seen the cover of the comic pop up around several times and it stuck with me and now I know Is a must read. Thanks for your great work showing the true outcome of passion
Every other time I watch one of your videos, I'm brought to tears, man. Your empathy towards the artist that you portray is palpable, and it's communicated so well. Your craft is second to non.
Not my favorite style/genre but what an inspirational story!! Thank you for expertly bringing stories like these to our attention. Hopefully this reaches someone who needs that inspiration to keep on fighting.
It is the best book I've read all year. Maybe one of the greatest graphic novels ever. Only really the high points of Eric Powells The Goon series or top Ed Brubaker have come close (this year). Currently reading The department of Truth which is also approaching those levels.
I thank you very much. I just got back from a comic festival and I was tempted to buy it as soon as I saw those drawings. Now that I've seen your video, I'm determined to go back and get it again.😊
Not just critics...but actual people, too! You thought you slipped that by...but I caught it, bro! LOL! GREAT JOB! Your docs are keeping me going, man. You have no idea.
Man, I'm 32 and two days into owning an iPad pro and switching from a janky pass thru tablet on windows trying to make a manga on my own in Photoshop... I feel like I've just managed to kind of start the same sort of journey the same time you released the video. I'm still preparing and starting character designs, but I have a script of my story written out and I've been saving for that ipad for so long... This hit me hard. I never knew this story. Thank you for telling it.
Once again, you knocked it out of the park. Thank you for providing such insight and putting so much care into your videos and the ways you frame the information you present. Always look forward to seeing you in my subscription feed!

Wait, did somebody actually call your release schedule slow? You put out something new like every month- there's youtubers who would call that OVERproductive. Christ, comment section, cut the man some slack.
I was so excited to see you made a video about Emil Ferris! I fell in love with her work the moment I started reading "My Favorite Thing is Monsters". This video made me love her even more.
This speaks to me in so many ways... At 5:48, I about plotzed to see her sketch of Henry Fuseli's 'The Nightmare'--because ten minutes before, I'd sent a friend a copy of that painting to describe my rapturous feeling of my 5-pound Deathlayer chicken sitting on my prostrate form as I sprawl on the couch. It's like therapy...which I need, I worked in comics, and it broke my heart and ruined my life. Serving my beloved birds is all I have left.

YES! agreed
But you'd need a 3-hours video at least, it feels like the dude has released one book per week since he started…
That last comment from her was superb and motivating. Great job on the video, Matttt.
Thank you.
Seconded as a Minnesota resident who knows nothing about him, would love a video
Despite finding unparalleled success and remaining grateful for it his whole life, he could never shake the feeling he was a down-on-his-luck outsider who was never really wanted. It’s the mix of sadness and wisdom he carried about him that made Peanuts what it is. He’d make a great video topic.
Pretty sure there’s several documentaries about him. Watch those.
Stories like this keep hope alive in those who feel the walls are closing in on them. There is ALWAYS hope. Always
13:03 "...not just critics, but actual people are liking it too!"
I knew it - critics aren't human!
Every other time I watch one of your videos, I'm brought to tears, man. Your empathy towards the artist that you portray is palpable, and it's communicated so well. Your craft is second to non.
One of the most impressive artist stories I have ever heard. Thanks for sharing.
Not my favorite style/genre but what an inspirational story!! Thank you for expertly bringing stories like these to our attention. Hopefully this reaches someone who needs that inspiration to keep on fighting.
Emil Harris' work is incredible. I will definitley be getting her two books.
Always look forward to seeing you in my subscription feed!
man, i just went to spx this year and left really demoralized as a comic artist. the money part is really killing me but i love making comics, i plan to never stop
Thanks for introducing me to this new work! Can’t wait to check it out!
I only expect amazing work and I’m never disappointed.
Just wanted to say that I truly love your videos. As a longtime comic creator I'm inspired and informed with each video. Also, like anything of great quality, it takes time, research, & passion. All of which are present in each and every one you've uploaded. Keep up the great work.
It doesn’t matter how long it takes for you to release a video. I always know it’s going to be something I love. Thank you for continuing to make them.
My favourite thing is monsters is one of my favourite comics. The art, story and characters all work.
i mean its her lifes work, and it shows. the passion is on the pages. whenever you make something that sincere it has to win ppl over, ppl can recognize passion.
Loved this story 🤍
Such a creative and courageous woman.✨
Thanks Matt! I was amazed at the quality of her illustrations when I first opened this book, but I had no idea of the author’s journey behind the work. I really appreciate your empathetic presentations of these amazing writers and artists!
Hey matttt! I think a good video for you to do is one on Jim Shooter! Hes everything you'd love to tackle. Hes controversial, successful, influencial, and still highly debated. Just a thought of course, do what you find interesting!
Her art is reminiscent of Maurice Sendak--maybe it's just the fangs, but I think the cross-hatching also reminds me of his work.
man it is so nice to hear stories like this where the artist wins. great video
Matttt has an incredible knack of leaving me inspired after every video. His love for the art form is infectious.
this video made me emotional, good work matttt
you cover comics in ways that no one else does. i love the history aspect of your content and how real-world events and experience affect them. as a comic youtuber and artist myself i aspire to be as good at storytelling as you are.
Thank you so much for this inspiring story. Her artwork is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to actually read the comic. And thank you for honoring life experience which goes deeper than any clever 20 something story that derivative of other clever 20 something stories.
Nice video! Maybe you could tell the story of Steve Gerber, creator of Howard the Duck, and his important legal battle against Marvel.
I do not want to take away from the amazing quality of this video or the brave story of an amazing artist, but man at 0:22 I started screaming like an ape going "BALTAN SEIJIN! BALTAN SEIJIN". Ultraman brainrot is REAL.
Omg yesss that ending Clip was great! Awesome video, thanks
I’ve heard a lot about My Favorite Thing is Monsters, but had no idea what it looked like inside the book. Thanks for another inspiring video.
I just discovered her work. I couldn't agree more. I think you are such a great presenter and communicator for this medium. Thank you so much for these great videos.
Her line drawings had a touch of Leonardo DaVinci.
This made me calm and gave me hope. Thanks Matttt.
Her last comment in this video has me cryingggg. I'm INSPIRED!
This is a lesson in persistence. She truly inspires me and other people who are procrastinating and taking their time and getting it out there the best they can in spite of having limitations and struggles.
4:21 brought tears to my eyes
Wait, did somebody actually call your release schedule slow? You put out something new like every month- there's youtubers who would call that OVERproductive. Christ, comment section, cut the man some slack.
Humanity is brutal. Especially when it comes to content. You either release 2-3 videos each day or you become irrelevant. It is what it is.
The death threat at the end was the cherry on top. Excellent video. Thank you.
I'm reading book two now, she's insanely talented!💖💖💖
Thank you for sharing her story. Her story is so inspiring!
That is an awesome story. Thank you for sharing. Such a lovely result for a creator who suffered and experienced so much in her life
Thank you, i think i needed this to tell me its not too late to tell my stories.
brilliant real life story! fighting thru the pain, keeping going, creating, and winning! inspirational woman!
I was so excited to see you made a video about Emil Ferris! I fell in love with her work the moment I started reading "My Favorite Thing is Monsters". This video made me love her even more.
The ending was just spectacular! Cheers again Matt!!!
Becoming my new favorite channel
This speaks to me in so many ways... At 5:48, I about plotzed to see her sketch of Henry Fuseli's 'The Nightmare'--because ten minutes before, I'd sent a friend a copy of that painting to describe my rapturous feeling of my 5-pound Deathlayer chicken sitting on my prostrate form as I sprawl on the couch. It's like therapy...which I need, I worked in comics, and it broke my heart and ruined my life. Serving my beloved birds is all I have left.
This channel is legit one of my favorites right now…and I’m not even a big comic fan.
This vid made me cry ! What a beautiful story what a beautiful soul ! Thank you for sharing!
Holy shit, she was in my creative writing program at the art institute of Chicago. I didn’t even remember her until I came across this video. Wow…
Man, I love this story, and Ferris is an absolute legend. That ending was hilarious 😂
Thanks for making this video.
Great video … What a challenging life she has had and her book is so totally riveting !
Always love your videos, your storytelling about storytellers, etc.
This was a beautiful story and so glad for her. I wish her all of the luck! What an awesome and strong lady and journey!
Great promotion for Emil! Nice work Matt.
What a great story. Once again, the best channel about art, soul and history of comics
just fast enough youtuber ever bruh
Was a bit hesitant that you'd venture into spoilers about book 2, being on my to read pile but just got bumped up.
