  • From The Story of Rough Trade - "The record label needed commercial success but fiercely guarded its independent identity, built on the alternative credibility of its music. The perfect solution to all of these problems came from a pair of ambitious songwriters from Manchester."

Johnny Marr on the hustle being proactive...that's how you get on in life not by sitting there waiting for stuff to happen.

When I heard This Charming Man, I picked up a guitar and I really think that was the start of my maturing/modesty process. It humbled me, and inspired me to be amazing at the same time. In short, I was absolutely blown away. Nothing like it before or since.

The smiths, Stone roses, happy mondays, oasis, sex pistols all made music that wasn’t only great but was so good that people are still listening to it 20, 30, 40 years later. You can’t say that about any music today

It's very true that Rough Trade kicked Go-Betweens *right off the label* to sign The Smiths

That is tragic. Along with The Smiths, The Go-Betweens are one of my favorite top 10 guitar groups from the 80's up to The Libertines.

They have songs that are weaker (Vicar In A Tutu, Rusholme Ruffians) but every album is perfect.

jimeas popoloiv Ah yes Bernard Butler knows nothing about music that must be why he’s a successful musician and your not

  • @MrMHughes68

Bernard Butler's remarks are moronic and show how little he knows about the aspirations of the groups he defames. The Smiths are where the rot sets in, as far as i'm concerned. Compared to Scritti, The Pop Group, This Heat and Robert Wyatt, they were positively reactionary. Morrissey's subsequent support for the far right was par for the course.
