I believe the Noel Gallagher quote about Johnny Marr not being able to re-learn old Smiths songs was something like "He's so good, even he's not as good as him."
As someone who has never listened to either The Smiths or Morrissey, this videos was awesome just because it was great seeing two people so passionate about something.
"I dreamed about you last night and I fell out of bed twice" was a line that I wrote in a love letter to my husband, in the early 90's, who guided me where I needed to be for he passed in 2004 and got me to where I am now -single and just biding my time for greatness...
I have met Thomas Lennon at a TV taping Carson Daly show for Morrissey.. Screamed Morrissey's name got a wave. Thomas walked by after and said hello to me in the stands. We became friends on MySpace top 8 status lol. He remembered me. I've had the privilege of touching Morrissey's hand a grasp.
I'm years late, but this is by far one of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam. I grew up watching Thomas Lennon since the earliest days on The State. Hearing these two talk about Morrissey and The Smiths in such an intimate and passionate way in a matter of moments is incredible. It's the same way I carry on when I discover others' passion for Morrissey and The Smiths. Much respect for you both, I could easily watch hours upon hours of this banter while hanging on the edge of my seat.
I still remember THE first time I heard The Smiths. I was a senior in High School, I was really into Hip-Hop and Rap back then (still am but in those years it was the only thing I heard) it got to a point where that kind of music wasn't really talking to me, I could not really relate my self with it. I was watching VH1 one night, it was around mid night and they had this little section with "classic" videos from the 80's; I just saw this black background with the bold work PANIC on it and that chorus was the end and the new beginning for me "burn down the disco, hang the blessed DJ, because the music they constantly play, it says nothing to me about my life". That day I saw the light and never looked back. I have the same type of conversation with a cousin of mine whom I never knew was a big Smiths / Morrisey fan and this is just heaven, the best 45 minutes of my life watching two people talk the I I've talked about the band I love in the world, just brought tears to my eyes, LITERALLY !!!
Why was this only 45 minutes?!? I think I could take another 8-10 hours of Thomas Lennon talking about The Smiths. I love how Morrissey makes poetry out of awkwardly bland lyrics like "And he stole from the rich and the poor and the not very rich and the very poor."
3:30 Johnny Marr actually did approve of their cover. In Uncut Magazine he said "I loved Radiohead’s version of ‘The Headmaster Ritual’. It’s not an easy song to do.".
Chris...I just listened to this and I felt like I was in the record store with you guys. I'm a HUGE fan of Morrissey and I'm sure I would collapse if I ever met him in person. Thanks for posting this and taking the time to put some THOUGHT into a discussion about one of the greatest bands (and artists) that ever existed...
I loved this, Lennon is so hilariously intense about everything, but if you are a Smiths fan, you know there is no other option. Shame on you Chris Gethard for skipping over Death At One's Elbow, one of Marr's best rockabilly-tinged compositions.
I also remember my first listen of the smiths, it also was 'real around the fountain' as it was the first song on the album. in the basement of my friend, in the 5 th year of highschool, around 1990. It'S my favorite to play on the guitar! :)
I remember the first time I heard the Smiths. I grew up listening to The Cure albums my mom had and fell into that Robert Smith and Morrissey hate each other thing so I never gave them a listen. Years and years later I bought Neil Finn’s 7 Worlds Collide dvd that had Johnny Marr playing along side him. As soon as I heard them go into There is a Light That Never Goes Out I realized the err of my ways. So pissed I waited so many years to give them a listen. Love The Smiths and Morrissey. Marr’s guitar work is incredible from The Smiths up to his current projects. Morrissey’s lyrics and vocals are some of the best.
My favourite Smiths song... Just like you, mine is always changing too, but one that's probably been my favourite for the longest and most times is please please please let me get what i want.
Listening to this in the car waiting for my daughter as oscillate wildly is playing in the back ground and I'm wearing a shirt that says its a Morrissey thing you wouldn't understand
I was in 3rd grade ('85) when I first bought my first Smiths record, Hatful of Hollow.. The Mick Ronson produced pYour Arsenal is pretty special, as well as the debut Viva Hate which I also got immediately on vinyl when it came out. I grew up with those records that's why they are special to me. But I have equal appreciation for Marr, Rourke, and Joyce these days. Especially Marr.. I mean just listen to his guitar parts on Billy Bragg's "Greetings to the New Brunette".. Oh, they're big in Manila too.
I was really hoping someone would work in his character from The Office and ask him if he listens to The Smiths so he could pull up the sleeve to his shirt showing his tattoo and say "You tell me."
The first smiths song I heard was bigmouth strikes again in an old 2005 skate video. I liked the song but I didn't delve into them until recently and I am completely enthralled at the moment. Such incredible and transcendent music. I don't understand how you can like the band more than the solo stuff though. His solo stuff trumps all. With evil legal eagles!!!! Ohhh you know I couldn't last!
The 'Reel Around the Fountain' lyric "I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice..." is a direct quote from the film 'A Taste of Honey', quite famously so (ua-cam.com/video/HGKTn9RqvmU/v-deo.html). Super fans such as these two should know that, surely? Maybe they did and they just failed to mention it...
You both say Strangeways correctly. Strangeways is a prison in Manchester. I am from Manchester, although I have never spent time in Strangeway prison, I used to work a stone's throw away. Edit: You mentioned the "take-over". That was at the same time as I was working across the road. I saw it with mine own eyes. I also had a cousin who was inside Strangeways at the time. Happy days.
next Moz debate, we wil have to add Noel Gallagher, Phil Anselmo, Russell Brand and Reptilian version David Berman to the mix... the song Isreal shall be played as the intro and the outro ( with a dub backround mix of Teachers are Afraid of the Pupils )
Loved this, but hard to understand how Thomas had not yet heard of I Keep Mine Hidden until the Janice sessions, which leads me to believe he wasn't as "in" to them (at the time) as much as he professes. We anxiously awaited and devoured each single release and b-side over and over until (and after) the NEXT one.
The Cat & Fiddle still exists, but it moved from its previous Sunset Boulevard location to Highland Avenue. And they have Brits in LA trivia night on Tuesdays.
An essential Smith's video. " I know its over" and "there is a light that never goes out" and "unlovable are essential Smith's songs. I was 20 when I discovered the Smiths on MTV 120 mins. the Smiths will out live an its music will transcend the course of time.
And I thought I was the big fan...haha... I just started listening to Morrissey's solo albums because it has taken, uhhh, 32 years for me to get over the breakup of the Smiths...haha... and very much enjoying the solo stuff, especially Lifeguard on Duty, My Love Life, and many more. I did overlook Rank and just listened to I Know It's Over.....Wow!!!!
I feel like Chris, as far as my Smiths fanhood. I don't know all the ins and outs as much as the more hardcore fans do. But, I'll forever feel indebted to how that beautiful music, and that buttery voice heightened my love for just how deeply certain music can make us feel. Cheers.
I don't understand why grown ups, including myself (look at my avatar), is so obsessed with The Smiths (btw. I'm 57 when writing this). I'm mocking millennials (aka. zombielennials) for worshipping (currently South Korean) boy bands, but here I am, (and there I was) doing the same with an (admittedly intellectually more advanced) 80's alternative rock band. Edit: What I'm trying to say/ask: what is it with us Smith fans. Why are we so committed to these lyrics and melodies?. Lennon, Bowie, Dylan, etc... (did I forget someone?),- they weren't amateurs, they knew how to write those `Ever Greys`!. But Marr and Moz, to me, just jangled and sang along and almost their whole catalogue was this unique collection of these `Ever Greys` that losers like you and I will always appreciate as something that represent the real feelings of `You and I and the world`! Edit2: Very disingenuous, I kind of answered my own question with my biased opinion. Please refute.
I have never commented on a youtube video before... but I just have to say... this was the best 45 minutes of my life.
sometimes I watch this to remind myself there are others
I believe the Noel Gallagher quote about Johnny Marr not being able to re-learn old Smiths songs was something like "He's so good, even he's not as good as him."
As someone who has never listened to either The Smiths or Morrissey, this videos was awesome just because it was great seeing two people so passionate about something.
Damn, this was seriously the best. Whole new respect for Thomas Lennon, too. Didn't know him like that.
this is my favourite youtube video of all time.
"I dreamed about you last night and I fell out of bed twice" was a line that I wrote in a love letter to my husband, in the early 90's, who guided me where I needed to be for he passed in 2004 and got me to where I am now -single and just biding my time for greatness...

God bless this video. I've never even heard anyone verbally acknowledge Vauxhall and I before.
That's the best solo album.
I still remember THE first time I heard The Smiths. I was a senior in High School, I was really into Hip-Hop and Rap back then (still am but in those years it was the only thing I heard) it got to a point where that kind of music wasn't really talking to me, I could not really relate my self with it. Ohana Films and he stole all hearts away
I love that lyric. It is hilarious.
everything they said is exactly how I feel
I didn't think I was gonna watch the entire thing but I did
Other than actual Morrissey concerts, this is the only thing I need to watch.
I don't think I've enjoyed anything more than I've enjoyed the past 45 minutes of my life
3:30 Johnny Marr actually did approve of their cover. In Uncut Magazine he said "I loved Radiohead’s version of ‘The Headmaster Ritual’. It’s not an easy song to do.".

This is so delightfully relatable if you are a super fan of ANY band. It's fun to watch his passion when you know the exact same feeling
I've watched the 4 times now, and each time it causes me to find another aspect of the Smiths to love.
I’ll probably rewatch this vid once a year forever
I always come back to watch this video. It is beautiful to see that some people are as passionate and loving to Morrissey as myself.
I loved this, Lennon is so hilariously intense about everything, but if you are a Smiths fan, you know there is no other option. Shame on you Chris Gethard for skipping over Death At One's Elbow, one of Marr's best rockabilly-tinged compositions.
sethuberalles in fairness even Marr says its "out of place" on Strangeways
I loved this so much. I want another 45 min.
This really validated my love for the smiths in a way that ive never actually experienced as a fan before
I also remember my first listen of the smiths, it also was 'real around the fountain' as it was the first song on the album. in the basement of my friend, in the 5 th year of highschool, around 1990. It'S my favorite to play on the guitar! :)
At @8:20 , points off for not calling it her “mammary gland”.
Never would I've thought I'd stumble upon such a vid....So glad I did
can you guys do a "U talking U2 to me?" style podcast about the smiths? This is pretty much my favourite video of all time
I remember the first time I heard the Smiths. I grew up listening to The Cure albums my mom had and fell into that Robert Smith and Morrissey hate each other thing so I never gave them a listen. I loved this conversation!!!
I love how superfreak it is and I've expected for something like this
This is the single greatest moment in American history.
My favourite Smiths song... Just like you, mine is always changing too, but one that's probably been my favourite for the longest and most times is please please please let me get what i want.
I was at terminal five both nights. Those were wild nights for the pit.
Listening to this in the car waiting for my daughter as oscillate wildly is playing in the back ground and I'm wearing a shirt that says its a Morrissey thing you wouldn't understand
they should rename the video " Thomas Lennon and Chris get hard talking about Morrissey".
😄😂🤣
It’s great Smiths weather out there
I would watch 3 more hours of this!
I was in 3rd grade ('85) when I first bought my first Smiths record, Hatful of Hollow.. This is so good!!!
little guys who absolutely wanna fight you for some stupid reason are the worst kinda people
U Talkin' More Morrissey 2 Me?
+Tosh Lewis Been thinking this all week.
God bless you

Why are the primal scream albums getting blurred??
wow I feel so understood right now
Can I get a sequel of this please?

The smiths and jawbreaker
So good!!! Really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this
The Cat & Fiddle still exists, but it moved from its previous Sunset Boulevard location to Highland Avenue. And they have Brits in LA trivia night on Tuesdays.
I'm still obsessed with The Cure, Depeche Mode, and The Smiths. And New Order.
An essential Smith's video. " I know its over" and "there is a light that never goes out" and "unlovable are essential Smith's songs. I was 20 when I discovered the Smiths on MTV 120 mins. the Smiths will out live an its music will transcend the course of time.
This is amazing. So entertained, at both the content of this and the fact that 99% of people will hate this. Hahahahahaha
These are my dudes for real.
Reel around the fountain is the finest lyric that Morrissey ever penned.
I love you Mr Gethard and I love you Mr Lennon but I love Mr Morrissey the most!!!
he's only seem him 9 times? I lost track after 18.
Belgium loves The Smiths! This video has way to little views.
Brilliant stuff from Thomas Lennon and Chris Gethard. Who are both, by the way, not gay.
I'm about to look up The Smiths and I have a feeling I'm either gonna have a new favorite band or be really upset with two of my favorite comedians
Why did you leave us hanging?
Because he looked up The Smith's and immediately cried himself to death.
Brilliant - so I'm not the only Smiths obsessive in the world.
I think when he was making out, his friend was taking the piss by putting on Reel Around the Fountain
12:57 - Division St. and North Ave. in Chicago are parallel to each other. Great video though.
Tom Lennon is awesome :) I love him. His wife Jenny is great too :)
Good talk.
That was fucking awesome.
The fuzzed-out Screamadelica is awesome.
Love listening to other people obsessed with Morrissey and The Smiths.
Thomas and I agree on Morrissey love his solo stuff just as much.
Everyone is this comment thread are the exact people Thomas Lennon hates for liking The Smiths.
On the Bona Drag deluxe reissue, why did Morrissey edit out the S-T-E-V-E-N part in 'Ouija Board'? I always liked that part.
when we will get a Part 2 to this?
this is the best video ever
"If you've ever bought milk, you are the problem." Haha.
Great now I'm going to spend the entire day in a morrissey trap. I love hate when this happens
It happens to me everyday, dammit!
Happens to me all the time. Since 1986. 😆
I LOVE this video!
Noooo way! I was literally just watching Bull Durham last week and genuinely wondering 'where is she now'?
Why did the color up an leave?
Lennon seems really devoted but his arrogance seems like he is more of a morrissey fan than smiths fan
HMP Manchester is the proper name for Strangeways. Strangeways is actually an area where the gaol is situated
i love this so much
Morrissey has turned in to everything he hated about people when he was young !
Feel like I'm having a fever dream
I feel like Chris, as far as my Smiths fanhood. I don't know all the ins and outs as much as the more hardcore fans do. But, I'll forever feel indebted to how that beautiful music, and that buttery voice heightened my love for just how deeply certain music can make us feel. Cheers.
Hi! What kind of camera/lens did you use to shoot this? It was very pleasant to watch.
Thomas Lennon is the man.
i thought I loved the Smiths but I'll never talk about them for 45 minutes.
he was in the us office
"I'm not gonna carry my gun around with me. Someone could steal it."
So what song did they decide to both listen to at the end? Amazing video!
"Shoplifters of the World Unite"
Could you please ask me anything ,that might make me rethink my relationship with Morrissey 's lyrics .
Does being a Morrissey fan constitute of embodying/imitating the arrogance that he possesses in abundance?
Silly question
Wonder if morrissey has seen this
It is STRANGE WAYS...
put "guts" on other arm...
matching set.

stop being so pretentious. listen to the smiths because u love them, not because u think it makes u better than people
We getting a part two or....?
