How To: Key repair and reprogramming for 08-10 Dodge Grand Caravan / Chrysler Town & Country

- We bought this van used with one working key. The previous owner gave us another key that didn’t work, but said that it could probably be reprogrammed. I replaced the battery and noticed that the key actually worked to open doors and even had the emergency spare cut correctly. It just didn’t start the vehicle. Why not take it apart??? :)
This led to an easy repair, but little confidence in the repaired key due to the broken plastic portion. However, Chrysler has a feature on this era vehicles where the owner can actually program new keys themselves by using two working keys. I guess they figured if you possess two keys for the vehicle, you are likely the owner. So... if I can somehow fix my broken key, than I now have two working keys... which then allows me to buy new blank keys and program them for the van!

This video worked with two key fobs. I followed other's directions and it did not programming. You video is well done and I followed it (not the other instructions) exactly. The new key fob was programmed and everything worked!!!! Awesome, Thank you!
Thank you, I bought two key fobs from Amazon. I had one really broken key, I have to hold the two haves together but it would still start. The second key was the manual backup key. I follow the steps you outlined to the letter, and the new key fobs work perfectly with all functions including remote start. Thank you very much!
Thank you, showing me this helped me fix my key fob so that the trunk lift remote worked again! It was easy and I cleaned the contacts with 600 grit sandpaper (very carefully, you CAN do too much!). You made my whole week with this! Again, thanks!
You can clean to switch contacts with a pencil eraser.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet - but if the key FOB doesn't open the side doors or the doors don't open automatically when you pull the handle - on my 2010 Town & Country there are switches on the ceiling console that will open/close the doors. The end switch on the passenger side shows on/off. If this switch is off the the doors can only be operated manually. I discovered this the hard way thinking I had an electrical issue for a few days. I bumped the on/off switch when cleaning my van one day.

(I need to go with the ferry on sunday and be at work on monday, EVERYTHING is closed now). But thanks to this very well done video I located the error (the chip was lose on the other side) and with a short touch with the soldering iron it was fixed and the car started!!!! Thank you very much for your video! My key stopped working last night, not having any problems with it before ever. My van is T&C 2014. I cleaned everything and tried new battery, but it would not work anyway. So I must get a new set!
Nice!! Ive got some spare keys cut, but they only work for the door. Hopefully this will work for them to start the van as well.
Not sure but I believe Chrysler did a recall a few years ago and removed that programming capacity. The pretext was to fix the problem with a key with a bunch of keys on it would be heavy enough to shut off the ignition while you were driving. Remember that situation? They also removed the programing capacity. I really think they did that because the dealers didn't like the competition. People could buy a cheap new blank and do it themselves. Now they have to go to the dealer and the dealer prices have skyrocketed as a result.

Update: There has been a recall out involving these Chrysler keys. Our van had not yet had the recall, so we took it in to get it. They replaced the whole ignition module and issued us two new keys. Now the old ones no longer work. However, the Amazon keys never did quite work as good as the factory keys. I couldn’t open one of our side doors with the old key. The wife’s key opened everything. Now with the new factory keys after the recall, the ignition is tight and the keys do it all.
thank you so much for posting this information. I forgot all about the recall outstanding and was looking down the barrel of replacing two keys for over $200 I just called and they're going to replace the ignition and keys for free.
You should be able to go through the steps of programming the key again. This usually only works with a new key. But I believe it will work with your keys because they were programmed to your car originally
Thank you for this information. We just took the car from dealership with electrical problems. They told my father he had to come back, he never told me. I had been reseraching getting new key fobs and purchased some. They told him $400 to purchase and program a new key fob $300 of that was for programing. I just found out today they have ordered the new ignition module and will call him back when it is in. thanks again
For my Chrysler T&C 2010, I tried several times to program my new keys I bought from eBay, I am following the way you have shown in this video but no luck, can anyone suggest what step/steps I might be missing or not doing it right.

I have the opposite problem. My wife's key starts the car but doesn't unlock the doors. I was told it would be hundreds to replace the fobs chip

I have a '08 has intermittent issues even with a new battery works most of the time if I'm on top of the vehicle bit today thank God for manual keys since I had to utilize it.and the thing worked to start the thing.
I tried to program a spare key I have but I can't seem to have any luck.

Watched a vid on replacing the WKN module and wow it's a pita to do and you also have to have the ecu paired to start the thing

There’s also a recall on your ignition on these 08-10 Dodge vans which replaces ignition switch and 2 key fobs at dealership for free. Check to see if your recall was fixed. If not get it done free.

My 2009 Caravan was recalled in 2018. The ignition keys would 'Fall out' if it hit a bump, the van would QUICKLY STOP dead! For the RECALL: 1-The dealer installed a NEW ignition switch assembly (keys secure and tight) 2- They REPROGRAMMED the system to "Bring it up to date", RESULT, I can no longer program new keys myself.
Unfortunately, I think I’m in that boat myself. We had the recall done. Nice having brand new keys, but won’t be nice when one of these breaks.

Same here. My 2010 doesn't get into programming mode even though the highly rated Amazon vendor said it would self programmer. I read in comments somewhere that the 2010s changed mid-year, and that the later 2010s wouldn't self program... or something like that.
Also, after the new key fails to start, I get the message "badkey".

I have a 2014 Town and Country and I have lost one fob so I bought 2 new fobs online. I tried the steps you suggested in the video but it would not start the engine. Is there a way to make this work for my 2014 model or do I have to go to the dealer? Thanks.
If you do not have 2 working keys, you can’t make spares. I had one working and one broken, fixed the broken one enough to work. With a single key, you’re stuck with a locksmith or dealer. However, you may be lucky enough to fall within the recall. Check with your dealer.

the green part on the key got water damaged and it won't work I don't want to buy a new one plz help 😭
Clean the corrosion off of the green circuit board using rubbing alcohol and Q-tips. Make sure to clean the whole thing, where the battery goes, between the traces, etc. You can take something pointy to scrape a little between the close traces to make sure current isn’t jumping across. Then throw a new battery in and see if you can get it to work enough to work. If you can get it working enough, and have another key, you can program a new one. But you NEED two keys. Otherwise, a dealer or locksmith are the only options.

DarakuTenshi You’ll need two in order to program yourself. I fixed my broken key enough to work giving me a second, then used that to program new ones off Amazon. Otherwise, you’ll be forced to go through a locksmith or the dealership.
My problem isn't the same as yours (thank God). Mine is just none of the buttons work anymore, so I ordered a fob hoping to use the rubber sheath with the metal contacts for the switch. Eventually I'm sure I'll end up with problems like you ran into... luckly I'm no stranger to a soldering iron.
It would just be nice to have 2 keys for the van. I just made a copy of the external entry key so if we lock the keys in the car again we can at least get into the vehicle.

Take it to the dealer to check if the van has had the ignition module recall. If it hasn’t, get it done and you’ll end up with two brand new keys. If it has, you’re stuck buying another key at the dealer.

I guess he has “dealer status” but sells car from his house,... are you suggesting I take it to a bog time dealer to find out if it had that recall done?... and then if not, I pay for that recall and I’ll get 2 keys provided with that recall?
Prairie Climber If it needs the recall, the Dodge dealer has to do it free. The new keys are part of the ignition switch recall. It doesn’t matter where you bought the vehicle. If it’s a dodge and needs the recall, the dodge dealer has to fix it.

No. It may work on other older Chryslers/Dodges, but 2019 is far too new.

Nope, you need two keys. It also won’t work if your copy is a duplicate of the same key. You need 2 unique keys.

If both keys are having the same problem, than it seems like the issue would be the lowest common denominator... something to do with the car itself. I would start diagnosing the issue by changing both batteries so you know the keys are fresh. It could just be that. Otherwise, I would focus on the car itself. Figure out how the car receives the signal from the key. Etc.

I don't understand why you would need more than two keys. It's kinda stupid that you need two keys to program additional keys. Question: can you re-program used keys from craigslist?
It’s actually kinda smart on their part. When you buy the van new, they give you two keys. Each key is programmed differently. Only the owner would have access to both of those keys, so only the owner can program more if they need extras for more drivers, etc. It’s not meant to fix broken keys. They want you to go to a dealer for that. The process in the video is kinda a way to get around that by fixing a broken key enough to use for programing more. If you only have one key you’re stuck with going to the dealer (or maybe a locksmith can do it). There’s also a limit to how many keys you can do this way before requiring a dealer reflash.
And: I don’t know if used keys can be programmed like this. I haven’t tried that. If you find out, let us know.

Nope, one key will not work. However, Chrysler had a TSB out where they replaced the whole ignition module. They gave 2 new keys with it. Might be worth checking into to see if your van had it done or not.

Not sure what to say. It has worked for many others. My van had the recall done, so it’s got a new ignition switch and two new factory keys now. Maybe your T&C still needs the recall. Check with a Chrysler dealer. That recall came out a few years back. Cars were shutting off while driving because the keys would fall out.

If you need to make a duplicate key for a spare key and you already have a duplicate spare key why do you need to make a difficult spare key

I’ll say the same thing as the last guy. Bullshit. I did exactly what you said which is exactly what he said on a 2010 Town & Country and it did not work. Stop putting false information out there for people like me trying to save money for my elderly parents.
I’m not sure why this didn’t work for you, as it has for many others. Calling it bullshit is your opinion tho and I can understand that opinion. If I couldn’t get a simple fix to work that I had seen on UA-cam, I would think the same thing. However with the mostly-positive response to this video, I would think that there is something about your particular vehicle/situation that is prohibiting this fix from working.
Some time after making this video we received a recall notice in the mail over the ignition switch on our van. They replaced all of it for free under this recall and gave us two brand new Chrysler keys. I would suggest checking online to see if your vehicle was one affected by this recall.
