This Anime GPU is the most expensive thing I own

- Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my all-time favorite shows, and I also happen to be a bit of a PC hardware enthusiast.
So when these two things were combined, I obviously had to get my hands on the outcome.
I recently bought the EVA-02 version of the ASUS Strix RTX 4090, and I felt like making a video about it.
This is me just going over the process of installing it and talking about my experiences along the way.

how can you have an evangelion 4090 and a GIRLFRIEND?? is it possible to learn this power?
Crazy, right? It's been six years and I still have no idea how that happened.
I brought this eva GPU and my girlfriend got angry when she found out the price (she saw the scalpers price)
@@Cryzeu buying anime version of gpu < buying cosplay for girlfriend
@@CryCasher I like the way you think, my man.
But we've actually already got quite a few fun outfits. :3
a man of dedication and will. glad to see you get a limited edition GPU that you like.
About the cable, there's no problem supplying 300W with it; Corsair uses 16 AWG, which is sufficient for 300W .
The connector on the PSU side is also rated for 300W; only the 8-pin PCI_E connector is officially rated for 150W, but it does have a very high safety margin so no real issues there. Good thing you got from cablemod a cable for that GPU; it's a much safer option and looks much nicer. About the voltage - it's complicated, but in general, there is a requirement for the +12V in ATX to be within 5%, meaning deviation can't be up ±60 [mV]; improper connection might increase resistance and reduce the voltage, but there could be more reasons or different issues causing it.
Enjoy your new upgrade! But I would say your CPU is a limiting factor. Maybe upgrade when the next-gen CPUs are released this year (with that Evangelion theme).
Damn, huge thanks for elaborating on this!
I've been really curious about what the deal actually is with all of this ever since before I even ordered the GPU.
I kind of wish this information was more available though. Like, if the wire gauge would be listed in the PSU specs or something, maybe with a chart for what 16 AWG for example can safely provide, etc.
I felt that there was very little to go on back when I tried to research this.
Interesting to hear about the voltage stuff too. I've been especially curious about that, because I have a AMD card (R9 290X) that tends to report around 10.8V when at full load.
This seems completely bonkers to me, it seems way too low, but I've never seen anything weird happen in terms of performance or anything like that.
Is that maybe a sign that the PSU is garbage?
@@Cryzeu about wire gauge and max power draw this is kind of stuff you have to search online and know what to search. For R390x I doubt it can even operate at such low voltage, it could also be that the voltage reading isn't good, you can use some good electronic multi meter and get more accurate reading at the card power input, will have to be careful not to short the ground and 12V, and of course identify which pins are ground and which are 12V so you can measure voltage across them.
Loved the description
that 12v connector looked like it didnt go in all the way
and i have heard the fan on the cpu cooler is best to pull then to push air into the cooler
Now you need a R7 7800X3D
Looking forward to seeing this on Northwestrepair's bench in 6 months.
Dayuuuuuuuuum brooooo that gpu is more than my car
Yo, same. My car has driven 320,000Km, and it doesn't even start half of the time.
But it's a charming little pile of junk either way.
@@Cryzeu But its reasonable to get a GPU instead. NOOB
9:58 Is that a Quadro FX 1800? I had one in my main PC in 2013 before upgrading to a GTX 660 in January 2014. The FX 1800 was a huge upgrade from the iGPUs I had used before
Wow, well spotted! Indeed it is an FX 1800. It was scavenged from an old thrown out office PC, and it's been doing a lot of work in one of my secondary PC's over the years.
I played a lot of Civilization V on this card back in the day. It's a surprisingly capable little guy. :D
Need upgrade to PCI-E 4,5 CPU & motherboard get the full speed out your 4090
ua-cam.com/video/jT49FmZKdcA/v-deo.html there is almost no difference and a 9900k is fast enough for a 4090 if you don't play 1080p.
I ran this configuration for a bit myself (9900K - ROG 4090 and 4 sticks of RAM 32GB at 3200MHz). But I used a 4x8 pin to the 12x4 12VHP connector and had no issues with a Corsair 1200W PSU. But the 9900K is not going to be happy with that cooler. I had the Noctua version of that cooler, and I was always in the 90C+. Then I got the Noctua NH-U12A chromax black which has 7 heat pipes and more surface area and a push pull config. Now when running Cinebench at full tilt it's below 85C and rendering video edits it stays around 75C and gaming around 65C. And I have the CPU set to remove all limits and pushing the full 5GHz all core. I am impressed that you were able to shoehorn that GPU in there lol.
I can confirm that you are absolutely correct in regards to the cooling.
I've had to put a power limit of 130W on this chip for the time being to prevent it from going into the 90C+ range.
I've been doing a bit of research lately on coolers, so I'll likely pull the trigger on something in the near future.
I might look into that same Noctua NH-U12A that you mentioned, I've heard lots of great things about that one, and it isn't excessively massive in size or anything either.
Thanks for sharing your insights, I hope you have a cool day. :D
upgrading from a 2080 is insane thats around an overall 200% speed increase!! style points as well lmao 10/10 upgrade
nice job keep working hard
Hey, thanks man!
I appreciate the comment, I hope you have a cool day!
It’s all good torun your RTX in 450w (3x PCI-e 150w connectors) or overclock mode at 600w (4x PCI-e 150w connectors). Running in 600w achieves negligible fps improvement unless you’re planning to do major overclock etc and gain potentially a few % points for an extra 150w input which for me isn’t worth it. I actually undervolted mine basically with MSI Afterburner and was about to save ~20% power draw for 1-2% less fps in games at 4K resolution 💪😇🥰🤤which for me as an itx builder, pretty impressive!
12:27 I build PCs for a living, I can give advice on this. TLDR:
150W guaranteed under any circumstances and protected by warranty. The reason why they split into 2 separate 8pin cables is because that old GPUs used to need 2x6 instead 1x8pin. Also, some GPUs need 8+6pin connector. which is 150W + 75W, which is safe and protected by warranty.
300W is possible, but not recommended. It's really pushing it and I wouldn't ever recommend it to anyone. Avoid it all costs unless you're willing to take risks.
Good PSUs will safely provide 300W through those cables, but in general, avoid it if you can. 225W is what I recommend people to draw from those cables at the very most.
Thanks man, I appreciate the insight!
That 225W target seems to fit pretty well for my old 2080 Super, since that card would usually sit at around 250W at full load (with some of it coming from the PCIe slot).
Super cool to learn some more about how this stuff works, thanks again for sharing.
2:54 I honestly had the same reaction when I got my Asus TUF 4090. I mean, you know from reviews that the 4090 is big but really until you actually held one yourself you really can't fathom just how freakishly big those cards are. Like I had 4070 tis, 3080ies, 7900 XTX and a number of Radeon 6000 series cards and all of those don't even come close to the proportions and weight of those 4090 cards. Even compared to the Sapphire Pulse 7900 XTX I have in my second PC the 4090 TUF is massive.

Gotta be great going from 2080 to 4090. I am waiting to from 3090 to 5090 when the time comes.
soo cool
amazing top 10
You've got some banger taste, my dude.
It does look nice. Almost picked a white Strix one but went with the TUFF instead. These colorful parts sort of limit what you can do as far as builds but you can also make something cool. I cant believe the motherboard is $1500 lol
Yeah, I actually really get what you mean. With black or white components it is easy to change the look of the system by just adjusting some RGB values, which makes things a lot more flexible.
Having red components, like in this case, really sets the color scheme in stone from the start. But I just had to go for it either way, for that fancy Evangelion vibe.
Hopefully I'll be able to finish the theme one day by getting the motherboard too, and maybe some more custom cables.
And yes, these prices are wild. It ain't easy being an Anime nerd. ;_;
@@Cryzeu I do like this gen's collab vs last gens. Red looks better than purple imo. 4090's a great card except for that connector. Mine melted 2 months ago, I had had mine since the day they launched.
I have other cards I swap out for content so to be fair I had unplugged the cable multiple times but on the PSU side. My cable melted on both sides. GPU and PSU.
Either way I have unplugged regular 8 pin cables a ton and never had any issues because I had people saying all cables are rated for 30 times plug and unplug.
Long story short if you have a 4090 its something that you are constantly worrying about and thats why I don't like this connector.
@@TerraWare You might need to get the custom connector he showed in the video, I think it looks a lot better and safer (probably)
@@TerraWare This new connector has spooked me out a whole lot ever since I got this card. Whenever I open up my case to do anything in there at all I get paranoid that the cable isn't plugged the whole way in or something.
I sure hope it won't decide to just randomly explode on me, but who knows what will happen.
I also quite miss the old 8-pin cables, those things have never failed me once in the ten years that I've been messing around with computers.
The error lies with the video card manufacturers, it is neither possible nor admissible to see cards measuring well over 35cm! I have a 4080 that I can no longer disassemble because the pins that need to be pressed to free it cannot be reached in any way - except by disassembling the entire PC!
They need to find a solution, the new 5ooo series MUST be smaller in every sense! And if you have seen the various videos regard the new technologies in Taiwan they showed everything, except the new 5.ooo, although the technical specifications are already known.

Bro i get after getting that beauty of gpu there wasn't much budget left but really, that card needs a case from this decade, or at least a good dust cleaning, also be careful with 12 pin connector cable adapters, since launch those type of connectors have been nothing but trouble
Yeah, I heard that CableMod had to do a recall or something of some angled adapters they had for sale, because they had a tendency to burn up.
This didn't seem to be relevant for their cables however, so I just kind of hoped that buying a full custom cable instead would work out.
I am still a bit skeptical about this though, who knows if it will just randomly melt one day.
Also, I have given up in regards to the dust. The dust has defeated me, it is eternal. x.x
where do you source your anime figurines from?Aliexpress?
I buy most of my Anime merchandise from a store called "AmiAmi". It's a Japanese-based hobby store that sells all kinds of things, including Anime figures.
I don't know too much about buying on Aliexpress but I suspect that you would run into a lot of Chinese bootleg figures on there.
as long the gpu not dies like asuka is all okay 🤣🤣🤣
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO EVA-02 + DL125 cooler but does it make sense when lga 1851 is coming out soon ?
Performance is actually a secondary concern for me. I'd much rather complete the theme, even if it means going with some slightly older hardware. c:
So ideally I'd get my hands on that EVA-02 motherboard, but I've had a really hard time finding it in stock anywhere. I could always go to eBay or something, but I'd rather not pay double the price if I can avoid it, haha.
@@Cryzeu in Spain it is available, but the price is 1133 euros, also on Amazon, one is available with a discount at the price of 775... I also wanted something in the anime style before, but the price stopped me, technologies are developing very quickly, so I settled on Proart
@@Cryzeu also ASUS ROG Gladius III Wireless AimPoint EVA-02 Edition still on sale
@@Cryzeu in general, you can fly from Sweden by plane, even I could bring components to the airport and fly back, as an option 😂 ( there are all components except cpu cooler )
@R3YVAH Oh, I actually found that Amazon has it available with shipping to Sweden too now.
The price is certainly a bit absurd, but I might still have to go for it.
You're definitely correct in saying that tech is evolving at a rapid pace these days. But I'm sure a 13900K would be more than enough for me for a very long time.
Congrats in your Proart motherboard, those are also really nice!
Cool!!! I've got some 01 things from MSI and Asus (including the f***ing expensive 3080, even though I bought the used one).
Wish I could get the Asuka 4090 too, but even with a $250 discount, it's still too expensive.
Damn, that's so nice! I kind of wish I had the EVA-01 GPU too honestly, just as a collectors item. I think it's so cool that these Evangelion collaboration things get made.
But yeah, the prices sure are a pain in the ass. :c
very nice budy......
use the CableMod 12VHPWR 90 Degree Angled Adapter to help with the GPU cable 40 ish bucks (haven't tested it my self) nvm I didn't finish watching the video 19:02
I appreciate your suggestion either way, thanks for wanting to point me in the right direction. ^_^
selling parts?
That is a pretty graphics card my friend
If you buy a normal 4090 card, you can easily upgrade your CPU to 13900K with good motherboard.
You don't need ALL your organs, i know of this.
When you put it like that, you make a very compelling point.
Having two kidneys is totally redundant. It might be time to sell one so that I can buy more precious Animu crap. :O
Thank you for opening my eyes, internet stranger.
Where did you buy your card
I live in Sweden, so I bought it at a local Swedish retailer called "Databyrån".
Probably not very helpful to most people. D:
@@Cryzeu lol yeah good video I hope you get all the eva components
Cool GPU! I think I should start saving for Rei Ayanami RTX 6090 or something... And get yourself ryzen 7 7800x3d, you will stop caring about temperatures
A Rei card would be hella sweet. I think her Blue/White color scheme would look fantastic on a GPU.
I hope they will keep doing these collaboration things for future hardware. ^_^
i just hope more franchise gpu came out, eapecially something like SAO where the premise is also gamer stuck inside a game
and yeah, all black kirito's or dark purplr konno yuuki might be interesting xD
Finally you can play with shaders on minecraft
Bro you should get a bigger case and a platform upgrade, either go i7 13th gean atleast or a 7800x3d which will be best case scenario, otherwise it looks clean congratulations.
For sure, it's probably about time. My current motherboard doesn't even support PCIe Gen 4, lal.
I'm hoping to maybe one day get the matching motherboard for this GPU, just to stick with the theme.
That would force me to go with the 13900K, which is a bit of a shame, because I'd actually prefer to go with Ryzen.
But I gotta prioritize the things that truly matter, you know?
And by that I mean fancy skins.
I have the ASUS tuf and the hdmi is 2.1A . That Gpu is sexy. Idk anime but i like the figurines .

whith a normal rog asus 4090 u could get and am5 with 7800 x3d with same money and u could wrap them with fancy anime thing :D
The thing is, you are thinking rationally and logically. You are intelligently considering the value for money, and choosing a path that will give you more tangible benefits.

It's a nice card, but Nvidia could have made it more power efficient.

Do not use native Nvidia Power cable ! Buy an good one, custom made.
+ coil whine from hell 😅
What a mismatch of a system. I appreciate the fact you wanted the 4090, but 16GB of ram and an old 9900K?? You didn't even take the time to clean up that nasty old case 😒
I'm actually a bit surprised at how many people point out issues with the 9900K.
In my experience so far, it is still plenty capable of fully saturating the 4090 in the vast majority of cases. Most games are still much heavier on the GPU than on the CPU.
Of course there are certain outliers, like The Last of Us Part I, but that's actually been the only exception out of everything that I've personally played on this system so far.
Still though, my intention is of course to upgrade the rest of the system in turn too. Ideally I'd get the matching EVA-02 motherboard, and upgrade to a 13900K along with it.
But I'm in no particular rush, so I'm patiently taking my time with it.
I totally agree with you on the RAM though, 16GB is pretty meager these days. But I've actually already solved this one, I got my other two sticks back so I've got 32GB now! ^_^
But yes, either way. It is definitely a strange hodgepodge of a system, but I can assure it does get the job done quite well, haha.
And I've given up on dealing with the dust. There's just no winning, it beats me every time.
You must love vr 🤣chat
I do not mean that in a mean way but its absolutely bottlenecked.
4090 with that CPU is useless => My 4080 7600x RIG will be faster than urs because of it 🙂 But that GPU is a dream! 😍

My life may not be great but I am thankful I am not in any way related to you
Well, we all have our own ideals and preferences.
People just want to do the things that make them happy, right? And I'm fairly content with my day-to-day life these days.
Either way, I'm glad if I managed to shine some light on your day, even if it was in a spiteful manner.
I hope your life improves for the better.
You benchmarked with the 2080 drivers still installed. Noob.
I wouldn't really say I benchmarked at all, I didn't intend for this to be a review.
But for whatever it's worth, I did do a clean install with the most recent drivers. I just cut that footage out as it didn't seem too fun.
It would have been between the Task Manager clip and the GPU-Z clip (16:58), so everything after that point was with the newest driver.
Though, even with that said. The 2080 has access to the same driver versions as the 4090, so I'm pretty sure that same driver would have identical behavior.
I may be misunderstanding something here, but at least this has been my impression.
Either way, thank you for commenting. c:
