  • You can now buy a modded version of the AMD RX 580 2048SP with 16GB of VRAM. Not really sure why they would make this or think it's a good idea as the GPU is mostly too old for 4K.

    Those crazy Chinese.
I looked into these weird cards, along with the 16GB RX580 2048SP's I found mentions of an Frankenstein RTX 3080M with 16GB of VRAM! I made a few enquiries to the various Aliexpress/Alibaba sellers and yeah it does exist, the price was crazy though.
I still kinda want one. Supposedly there is a 16GB 3070M 16GB version too but I couldn't ever find one. What I do know is that there is something called the Frankendriver project which makes these weird frankenstein high VRAM mobile Nvidia cards actually usable.

Borderlands 3 launched with the parameter -notexturestreaming eliminates the game's notorious stutter by loading all the textures at once. Uses ~12GB of vram at 1440p and load times are longer (but stutter is almost completely gone).

This card never used over 8GB. The first number is Allocated VRAM. The second one is the used VRAM and it never went over 8.25 GB. Not once. Now, if I am wrong and those numbers are reversed, which would still make sense, it means the game is being allocated the full 8GB but is using a little bit more as it's there. Either way, unless the driver knows the memory is there, it's next to useless. I would look for a modded driver for this.

With a "Tuned" bios you can unlock the power over 300W; ive owned a RX580, ran for years on watercooling and clocks beyond 1633Mhz with a voltage of approx 1.375v and temps below 60W. When i ramped up furmark, and opted for the most violent power stress that was available, i saw peak power spikes of well over 360W over one 8 Pin connector. They are fun to play around with but they lack any punch beyond 1080 or 1440p.

Went pretty much as well as I expected - more VRAM does you little good when the GPU itself doesn't have the pixel-pushing power for how high details have to get cranked up to actually use it. If you prioritize getting to 60+fps (or 40+ with adaptive/g-sync) over eye-candy, 8GB is enough to cover most of the details entry-level (~$200) GPUs can handle.

Exactly. 16GB on radeon vii doesn't help it at all for gaming nor the extra on 1080ti. They are not man enough to power games and resolutions that require that extra vram. 3090 will be the same.

could you try putting them in crossfire? Since VRAM isn’t doubled but rather shared, maybe having the 16gb vram shared between that and the 8gb model could be a use case?

Those extra vrams will help you a lot. By lot I mean A LOTTTT. In productivity applications such as Catia, Cinema 4D, Adobe primer and most importantly Photoshop that's solely dependent on VRAMs 💯✨ maybe it's for creative people on a budget. Because at that price range 16GB GPUs are basically non existent 😅

  • @FireCestina1200
    @FireCestina1200 23 дні тому

For most close/over 200-250 bus speed card. Having more/faster memory can be very useful (especially powerful) for the RX580 speed so slow than you will not gain more performance. You might be able to max out more on graphics. But you still will have less FPS.
Additional note (especially for dumb Nvidia user or peopke with low knowledge) if a game need 9GB of VRAM and your card have 8GB. Even if the card will use less than 8GB it's just because it will cut some graphics. Or you will have less FPS. That's why if you compare a 4070 and a 7800XT. You can have the 4070 using 11 584 MB and the 7800XT 13 684 MB it's not the card managing worse his memory. It's the game cutting on some graphics.

The only thing this modified card would be good for is getting more life mining ⛏️ on the same card!! The extra vram would be definitely used even a modded Bios and using 2gb chips to equal 32gb vram would also be used up in a mining ⛏️ rig but for gaming the textures are just not big enough to use up the ram.

  • @jotabe1984

there is some point in time in which GPU might still push some game at min. settings but the minimal vram requirement of a given game will exceed the ammount of VRam that the GPU has...
let's take GTX 960 for example... the 2gb version it is very limited since way back in the day for modern tittles. The raw power of the GPU might me around 1050ti performance, but with only 2gb of Vram many games won't even start. On the other hand, the 4gb vram version can still play many games.
AMD never cheaped out in VRam, gpus like R7 370 already had a 4gb VRam version, and honestly in 90% of games a 4gb VRam setup will be just fine for 1080p. 8gb it is a need for very specific games (at this point in time, mid 2024) or higher resolutions BUT i'm pretty shure 3 or 4 years from now the 8gb version of the Rx 580 will still be running games that the 4gb won't...
that being said... the raw GPU power and driver support won't make reasonable to use a 16gb vram version of the card. Maybe an Rx 590... and just maybe...

The 580 was (still is) a 1080p card, absolutely not suitable for 2k or 4k gaming. When games like GTA V or rdr2 came out, 8gb of vram were almost overkill for 1080p gaming. I still have a 480 from Zotac, rocking on my daughter's rig.

For gaming people make VRAM such an issue when they can simply lower quality/resolution to reduce amount needed.
