Love the video, as a 1st year diesel mechanic I wanted a KRL722 or a Matco 4s Triple bank... after unfortunately injuring my back. I realized that it was not worth the money to spend on a big boy box. To anyone starting out and struggling with shop compensation on who’s box is bigger, just buy the damn tools !
thank you, it is a shot at giving some of the new guys good idea that their are other options and not everything has to be 1 specific high dollar brand.
Thank you antonio! yup the split top carts are nice and handy to have around for sure! Thank you as always for watching bud and hope that you had a good weekend and that you have a great 4th of july bud!
You are definitely correct about the boxes. I often see big name boxes sitting in home garages. I was at a yard last weekend and saw a killer Matco box. The owner went to a vocational school and was talked into the box. He is now a computer tech and is keeping the box because the best offer so far is less than half of what he paid when he was in trade school.
Yeah, truck brand boxes, albeit badass, still expensive ass box to have sitting around home. Thank you for watching Bill, Hope you have been well and have a great 4th of July!
Thank you for this video as I am a personal battle in my head for what I want vs why I need. I think we all go through the thought of wanting the shiny object.
That we do for sure Emery, but sometimes needs over wants can determine alot of things, as far as tool storage goes, we just need metal boxes that lock to put stuff in at the end of the day annd alot of good options out there. Happy 4th of July Emery, hope all well your neck of the woods!
I use the snot out of my harbor freight tool cart. 8 years old and going strong. Started with that cart and a Viper Ultimate box. Configuration ended up not working with the amount and size of my tools. Upgraded to a snapon 56" icon with a hutch. Miss ya bud!
The Icon boxes are pretty sweet set up without going Epiq, but yup, those carts are prob best bang for buck out there for what they are. Thank you for watching Adam and hope that you have been well!
Great advice and I for certainly agree about that milwaukee box that you just showed which is the 56" 10 drawer tool chest I had to second guess purchasing it do to the top drawer because I was concerned about exactly what you said so then I started looking at there 61" 11drawer work bench which is nice but the only problem the upper drawer are deeper but the split the top into 2 drawer instead of having the long drawer which is most needed if you do happened to have alot of equipment...but great content like I said because it is definitely educational for those who really get into there craft
Thank you, and yeah, that split top drawer set up is just a funky thing no doubt, but had to add in as option for someone just looking for something to get started in before going big would work for while. would work decent enough for most part at home. Again, thank you for watching and the input as well! greatly appreciated!
I am watching the crap out of these type of videos before I start at the dealership. I bought a 1300 dollar HF equivalent and I am going to pick up a service cart also. Main thing is paying cash and owning your stuff outright!
Indeed it does right off bat. Since hft went deeper with their boxes it was finally a game changer on their end, are they "as good as" well that depends, but in reality you just need a good sized hunk of steel to use as storage for your tools, and well, hft carts, boxes, and several others in that price range will definitely fit the bill! Thank you for watching junk and hope you have a good 4th of July!
Nice, since they came out with that 72" model couple of years after I got mine, i still am impressed everytime i check one out at the store. For the price cant be beat!
and for apartment living smaller box to have around when limited on space is another thing to also take into consideration. thanks for watching bud, hope that you are doing well.
I have a harbor freight 5 draw cart and added a 7 draw side box .I mainly use that all over the shop and my main box i keep a second full set of tools but also storage for things i do not use often.Love my boxes. But i do have snap on..lol..Need a little flash in my box..:)
yup, good mobile storage is always a plus! just something sturdy to keep tools in is all you really need regardless of brand when it comes down to it, but do hear you on the tools, snappy does make some great ratchets (albeit premium price to go along with them). thank you for watching
Thankyou Dan! it is greatly appreciated and hope this series does help people out and let them know that starting up you just need a mobile box to stow tools in at the end of day, it does have to be a tool truck brand by any means. again thanks for watching and hope you have good 4th of july!
Lots of good info Brandon. There are some good tool storage options available today. I believe that someone starting out should not get a tool truck box. No reason to go in the hole write out of the gate.
The Husky boxes are great for the most part. I’ve had mines for 2yrs now and I’ve got it loaded beyond the max. Here’s my gripes; the overall height is too short when compared to even HFT. The drawer depth of sufficient at 24”, but could be slightly deeper. Other than that, Husky boxes are great and would be perfect for the beginner tech. I personally do not like the Milwaukee based on depth of drawers and configuration of drawers.
The husky box you have has been downloaded pretty heftily since you got rid of the matco cart, filled to brim is understatement lolol, but one cannot say that your tools dont have character though, alot of old school and vintage snap on,craftsman and about 12 other brands lol.
True, I havent had chance to check out the newer homak's since they went larger and deeper on their boxes few years back, one place that used to sell them around my neck of the woods went with OEM branded toolboxes, that also seemed good bang for buck. Thank you for watching and the good input!
In got my orange 5 drawer tool cart for 78 dollers because it was damaged when I got home and it was a manufacture damage but I love 50 miles one way from the store so they gave me most of my money back it was only the lid hinge in inside took some vise grips and straitened it on inside and backside that nobody sees and bam 70 something dollers for a 200 doller cart
@@BeardedSeabee82 yeah I only asked harbor freight for 40 bucks off for the damage and they said it's okay your here alot we will recoupe it on your next purchase I was like sweet thanks I told them I had rented a trailer it wasnt possible for me to bring it back for an exchange if I got the exchanged one and it was damaged I would have to keep renting trailers to do it over and over wasnt realistic and they gave me a bunch of money back and I fixed it no harm no fowl
Yota Doug's Tool Collecting Channel classic series is 24” deep. I have a classic 78 and it has way more room than a HF 44”. After time the 44” will lose drawer retention (no latches) and the drawers will come open while moving it which might result in the box tipping over. No bueno!! The 56” on the other hand is a better option and has latches
@@6.4DieselDoctor HF are 22inches deep with 11 total, the top and 2 double width shelves have double slides. They do have a pretty decent detent that keeps them closed if you roll it, but might as well lock it to be safe. Im sure a bump could make a latch open a drawer so the system isn't 100% fool proof. I think I paid $369 on sale for mine in April vs. $3000 for a classic. You probably had you're box before these new boxes came out right? When I was looking to buy a box I had $800 cash and could come up with some more if needed.. I looked at new and looked used before I made a decision on the one I did get which is a good size for someone who does regular automotive work and wants a decent box for a few years.
Yota Doug's Tool Collecting Channel there’s nothing wrong with em. The series 2 is a much better than the old style by far. I actually bought my classic 78 recently but I bought it at a pawnshop for $800. I basically bought it as an investment because I’ve already been offered $2500 on trade in for the box I’ve always wanted. But... I may sell it and buy the us general 56” so I can pocket some cash 😎
Snap On is nice, heck my first box was a Snap On (smaller one) but the Harbor Freight boxes compare great and I just bought one for at home to expand and set it next to the Snap On.
Awesome vid Brandon!! Your wash guy has a mouthpiece on him!! Need to have a little more respect and attitude control. Nonetheless, don’t know him personally, so I won’t judge to harshly. Great vid as always and even better advice
lol, its all good trust me when i say he got nothing but grief from everyone in the shop prior to snap on showing up that morning, and not a day goes by that he doesnt get some type of crap from us in the shop, then again that is shop life at times lol, but the kid is learning for the most part and times he comes up with some funny stuff every now and then as well.
The original homak 56 i thought was nice, they only had 18 or so inches deep, and i think only had 38 or 40 inch top drawer, but i believe they have gone deeper all together (menards and hft size) and i think longer on top drawer too. Overall decent, just havent had chance to see the newer ones up close and personal myself. Thank you for watching and hopefully someone sees this comment and able to give better answer than i can.
I have a MBC aka metal box company. They used to make snap on boxes. But snap on wanted them to make them out of thinner metal. So snap on went elsewhere.
I started with the harbor freight 5 drawer cart myself. Now I have a custom matco jsc773 that I got on promo and a flat black classic 78 that I found at a pawnshop for $800. Yeah I pretty much snatched it up immediately lol. Both boxes are full now which the 78 is at the shop (work surface) and the 40” jsc773 cart is at home which works out perfect because I don’t necessarily need a big work surface at home. Trading the classic 78 on a Mac mb1384 or mb1004 in the next year though. Always been a Mac fan but I go where the deals are. Great video btw
Thank you very much Matt! and good to hear from you, hope that you have been doing well. But yeah as for deals, every once in a while you get some good breaks no doubt, pretty sure snappy would have more competition if matco and mac would stop by (but of course still no) but sounds like you got some good setup going on and be neat to see what deal they can get you on trading in next year. Take care bud!

thank you wayne!
Dude's, Tool boxes don't pay the bills. The tools do. I have been in the biz for over 30 years. Tools, Tools, Tools! Great advice to the youngens.
Too very true! yeah big boxes might look sexy, but at end of day i would rather have higher end tools and lower end box than other way around.
I love the split top carts
