as someone who is also disabled and deals with the VA on a regular basis over the last 20 years there's a lot missing here. I'm guessing we're getting some unreliable narration or apathy on Angela's part. Sooooo many congress persons would love to rip the military a new one over a story like this, if it was true. Which it probably isn't. I heard stories just like this in the military and 100% of the time it wasn't actually true.
as a person who is disabled myself, I think you did a fantastic job covering this situation. To be clear - there is no one way to cover disability. In some cases, if the individual with it viewed it as a tragedy, it can be appropriate to portray it as a tragic thing, in other cases people with disabilities are very proud of their disability and portraying it as anything but a thing of pride would be very insulting to them. So the best thing to actually do, in my opinion, is to talk about disability in general neutrally (it isn't bad or good, it just is) and then when discussing a specific person's experience to match how you discuss it's impact on their life to how they actually saw it (a.k.a if they were a very proud deaf person don't talk about what a tragic and hard thing it was to overcome, if they view becoming deaf as worst thing that ever happened to them don't talk about it like it was a point of pride for them because that's not how they saw it). I think you did a good job matching how you discussed it with how Angela seemed to think about it (she did seem to see it as a loss, but also didn't see it as a tragedy).
Yet another fascinating story, extremely well told. Angela's story is amazing and deserves to have a full-length documentary, I hope the film is finished and released soon. Thanks again for a great story.
To tell a story of such a strong, beautiful, courageous and inspiring woman, far outweigh the sad manner of her death. I feel grateful to have heard her journey ❤
Out of all the adventures you’ve told us thus far, this one is the most stellar on every level! Just wow. I’m going to be looking out on big water for the rest of my life for the spirit of Angela Madsen. I’m sure I’ll see her out there rowing, completely free.
I was feeling angry about Angela's situation until Deb came into the story. I'm so sorry for Deb, but Deb must know what Rockstars they both are. As always, great storytelling and what an inspirational story.
I love their story of meeting each other, getting hitched pretty quickly, Deb telling Angela not to go on that Great Britain row but she went anyway. Deb seemed like she knew that might happen so she was ok with it. And her support of Angela in every way was amazing.
You know that question where people ask you what dead person you would want to have dinner with? So you could have a conversation with them? I'm adding Angela Madsen to my guest list. Thank you for introducing her to me.
Angela is one of the most incredibly inspiring people I had never even heard of until this video. Wonderfully told, thank you for sharing Angela's story!
Brilliantly told, dear narrator. You shed light on every aspect of this brave woman's life with great empathy. And you demonstrate yet again an unerring talent for story-telling.
Did Angela piss off a witch at some point in her life? Because oh my gosh, that run of bad luck...she's pretty incredible the way she came back from it though.
wow. Angela's life was incredible, and very very cool. thank you for this episode. really inspiring. and VERY humbling. what is more her love with Deb is truly beautiful. it made me cry - that's really loving someone to think this fearlessly.
Thank you so much for sharing Angela’s story with us! What an amazing, inspirational and truly beautiful person! Ironic how the volleyball scholarship rejection was fueled by ignorant assumption that women are incapable of juggling motherhood, athletics and education. Yet, out of all things, she went on to join the freaking Marines! (Which feels like a much more difficult obstacle, IMO; especially given the way that women are treated in this branch, particularly back then.) Repeatedly, Angela got screwed over by people and life; but rather than giving up, she used her pain and challenges as motivation to excel. She would have still been fascinating without being lesbian and a Paralympian but it’s so awesome that her identity enabled her to reach and influence an even broader demographic! Angela was an exceptional person whose memory deserves to be honored and celebrated! 💕 P.S. I hope Deb is doing well! Sending much love and appreciation her way 🫶
This woman was incredible. I enjoyed this video so much I'm going to watch it again with my husband. I was amazed at her determination, her story should be an inspiration to all of us. Excellent video, I'm just sad for how it ended after all she went through.
What an AMAZING person. So much respect for her unwillingness to give up. And that doctor that called her a waste of life is the real waste of life. what an awful thing to say.
What an incredible woman. It’s so sad that the footage was never returned to them because I imagine it would’ve been a great comfort to her loved ones to see her so happy in her final days.
I just love your storytelling I could watch all day! What an amazing woman I can't believe I've never even heard of her! Thank you for telling us this incredible story
An incredible person with pure grit. It takes strength to keep getting up when faced with major surgeries. Then , to go in ocean alone without use of her legs is Amazing. Courage!
Thank you for telling us the story of this incredibly strong and inspirational woman, you are one of the few channels that are always respectful and don't sensationalise what happened.
Stories like this are truly heroic ❤ She was an absolute Wonder Woman and as sad as it is, I’m glad she went doing the one thing she loved the most. Thank you for sharing her story. You’ve paid her tribute perfectly 💕
Geeeeez. While you were telling us everything she went through I kept waiting for “then she was hit by light, abducted by aliens, and tripped over a nuclear bomb.”
As a proud resident of Long Beach I’m really happy to hear about Angela’s program…sad that I hadn’t heard of it previously. Now I know! Thank you! As a social worker myself, perhaps I will encounter people who could benefit from a referral to this program. (It’s in a beautiful part of our city, too…)
What an amazing woman! The determination is very inspiring. She found her passion and a partner that supported her. Too bad they couldn’t find the footage. Great story Stacy!
The steel nerves of this woman blows my mind!! The ocean both enthralls and terrifies me so you'd NEVER find me on a row boat in the middle of the ocean in the middle of the night alone! If anyone deserved to achieve their dreams it's Angela. God bless her beloved family and partner and may she rest in peace. I'd likely have given up long ago in her situation! tho I am 5'11" I sucked at basketball (actually embarrassed myself making a basket in the wrong basket at a sixth grade basketball game). I've always been a daydreamer if not good at something I was doing (ADHD). Thank you for your wonderful stories! Karma is real and I'm sure that horrible woman who took everything from her faced her own reckoning
I’m very lucky I didn’t end up like this lady after I broke my neck and jaw in the Army. I did lose everything including my marriage, because most people don’t actually mean their vows. But thankfully, I wasn’t permanently paralyzed. I’ve also not done anything dangerous since my injuries. The pain in my neck and face are just too much for me, and I lose power to the rest of my body if I am upright for too long due to C2 impinging on my spinal cord. Angela sure was a trooper, though. I wish she’d have just rowed in lakes and other less threatening places. If you can’t properly swim, it’s probably not the best idea to hit the ocean if you want to live a long life. The ocean is powerful and carnivorous. Even the perfectly healthy have succumbed to the depths of the ocean.
@@ToddDouglasFox Of course. I’m the 1st person to have PRP in the C spine in America. PRP wasn’t even legal in humans when I got hurt. I started with prolotherapy. I just had a PICL with my own stem cells back in July. I’d be long dead without prolotherapy and PRP.
A wonderful and inspiring story. Thanks for bringing it to us. I think Angela helped many in the disabled and LGBTQ community. She accomplished more than most able-bodied people who don't have the barriers in their lives that Angela faced. Rest in peace, Angela!

Enjoy the Way She talks about the life history of each Person. Not just how they got into trouble.
I love that she doesn't ridicule their choices or character either.
Man this poor woman could not catch a break! Makes one feel guilty for complaining about our normal day to day problems and aches and pains.
Some people bring it on themselves !
Don’t.
