- 🔴Check out this WILD story of a couple lost at sea for FOUR MONTHS!!! 🔴 • When sailing the world...
Welcome back to another Adventure Gone Wrong! This time, we delve into the life of the wild, eccentric, innovative and a little bit crazy, Brian Boland. Brian was known as the "Hot Air Balloon Man" around his town in Post Mills, Vermont. He was completely OBSESSED with everything to do with hot air ballooning. He was involved in balloons for over 50 years, when one mistake on a flight ended in tragedy.
Be respectful in the comments, otherwise your comment will promptly end up floating into the abyss like a lost hot air balloon.

I really love this guy. Really enjoyed learning about him. Most channels just focus on the terrible incidents that kill the person and it’s really cool how you celebrate the people and their life.
That’s what I find the most interesting! It’s easy to forget there’s a person with friends and families behind each story.
Brian was unique, a wonderful man!!
Exactly. I'm so glad she talked mostly about him, not the accident. The first few minutes, I was already a fan. By the end of the video, I was crying.
Reducing the flame would land the balloon.
If you like this, you should listen to crimebeat! It's a crime podcast but the host was actually a crime journalist so she has connections to police, justices, and people involved in the cases she talks about and she focuses on the victims and their families. :) also canadian!
Really love your narration style. This is not the usual thing you see on social media. I kinda feel like i'm sitting in person in a circle around you at a camp or nature center. It's so natural. Imo it makes me pay closer attention. Usually these narrated vids i start tuning out and have to keep restarting bc the person talking either sounds like an actor or a person reading a script. Your delivery, editing & research is excellent.
Thanks so much Ashley! And you're kind of right, I usually tell my friends these stories first, so it's really like I'm telling them to friends!
same here!
I totally agree!!!
I’ve flown with Brian. RIP balloon commander.
This guy was truly a visionary and pioneer in ballooning
He really was. The mind of an inventor is fascinating to me.
There are precious few people in this world like Brian, who not only live life to the fullest but want to bring everyone around them along for the fabulous ride. Thanks for sharing his story, and here's cheers to Brian. 🥂
I agree! He was a special guy.
Hilarious and respectful at the same time. I hope when I turn 80, some dude shows up in a hot air balloon and whisks me away too. Thanks for this tribute.
There were so many stories like that which I had to edit out for time. He definitely lived a full life.
@@adventuresgonewrong Wish I could have met Brian. a sincere thanks for this nice piece. just subscribed so as not to miss anything.
Thanks for making me love this guy. Beautiful story.
Same thing happened to me, he was so interesting! Thx for watching!
I love how your videos feel more like tributes to the people than sensationalist recountings of their horrible moments. Cheers to Brian!
That's why I cover them, they're amazing people!
You've quickly become a favorite narrator of mine. I like your voice, your energy and your interests seem to match mine❤
Woohoo love that. They’ll only get better as I find my groove!
Sad ending to this beautiful person! So glad the others he was responsible for made a safe landing.
I’ve been waiting for the next upload and I was not disappointed!!! Your narration style and stories are one of a kind! I love it.
This is truly terrifying!! Also even the music you chose for the background is the best 👍
Woohoo glad to hear it! It’s a ton of work so I appreciate the feedback!
Cheers to Brian! What an amazing story! I love watching balloons, but have no desire to ride in one.
Keep ‘em coming! 😀
Haha they are a bit freaky and I don’t think I’d ever go in one again after researching this.
This has started to become one of my favourite channels, I really appreciate how you discuss the life and passions of the people you talk about.
Thanks! This was one of my favourite folks to research, Brian was one of a kind.
He sounds a real character. I will never get up in a balloon. I remember once when I was going to Australia, a tourist balloon's basket broke and the people fell through it and died. I like to be in control. I can't imagine how scared I would have been left alone in a balloon with no 'driver'.
It would be terrifying being alone, and there are too many stories of balloon accidents for me to ever go up in one alone.
I really appreciate the research you put into your videos. Keep up the great work!
What a great feature on a creative person from my home state. So many Vermonters are creative and ingenious making something out of nothing. I had the pleasure of working with them in the real estate industry for 30 years. Hope you do some stories on hiking the Long Trail
And Appalachian trail. Thanks for your narrative. You are doing great and hope you have more success with each video you upload.
That’s interesting about Vermont folks! I will look into stories form those trails, I’ve heard of a few from the Appalachian trail.
The more that I think about him after the video, the more I think he didn't take the line so that they had the best chance of survival. At first when you told the story, I thought he had resigned to d!e from the moment he fell over the basket, and that he did this kinda edgy stuff knowing there was risk but in some way, being ok with death! As an outcome for himself.... especially after his only son's death. I think he'd like no better way than to end on a balloon.
But thinking about it after, I don't think that's the case.. I think that he knows if they had used up any sort of time trying to pull him up that it could have gotten them into trouble as well. And also it didn't seem like they had the time to focus on him because they had to focus on keeping the balloon in the air and I think it's because they didn't spend time pulling him up, they were able to get the balloon settled enough that they landed somwhat safely....I think that it would have taken both of them in the balloon to pull him up and that doing so would have meant a lot of time and focus off of piloting the balloon. I think that's why he just started shouting directions--he knew that bringing the balloon down saftley was the first thing that needed to be done. And that pulling him up would have taken lots of time & effort and they would have all died . So I think he sacrificed himself for them. If he was such a calculated man - I think he calculated all of that even more so than they did. I think he knew the best chances of them living was to focus on the balloon and not him !!!
Your channel is quite different from what I am use to. I watch hours of poker, fishing, crime, murder and mysteries and now I will fit yours into my schedule. I am very impress with your content and your methods of presentation.
Wow that’s quite the variety, thanks for adding me to the list!
Thank you for all the hard work to bring us this story about such a unique man. Cheers Brian!
I really like your channel. You are a great narrator, your content is interesting and informative and your backgrounds are beautiful. I like when you add your experiences with family members. I have subscribed. Great job 👍🤍
Welcome aboard!
I like how your dogs join in to your videos
Very sad . But he lived and died loving his passion. ❤
Just stumbled upon your channel totally by mistake, so glad I did as I really enjoyed the first video about Emma and her tragic trip. It’s 2-45am and have to watch the Brian Boland story before I go to sleep lol. Keep up the good work
Appreciate you sacrificing sleep to watch! 😆
I just read your comment at exactly 2:45am!
Brian loved his lighter than air adventures. he gave many the opportunity to experience similar airborne flights that drew him to the sport. God bless people such as Brian ❤ It makes the human experience so much more meaningful.
Yes, he really found his calling and shared his love of it with so many others.
"I love cobwebs." What a gem of a guy.
So quirky! 😅
What a cool guy!
RIP Brian, may you always fly high!
This was a particularly awesome story as the heart and soul of Brian was connected to him flying hot air balloons. I flew in a hot air balloon some years back with my daughters when we were traveling in New Zealand. It was an incredible experience, and I would definitely love to do it again!
I wonder why he wouldn't let them pull him up? Did he think it would off balance the balloon? What was his reason?
Well done! Thank you for your in-depth look at people and their adventures. And, of course, what happens when things go wrong. I’ve really enjoyed your thoughtful videos and look forward to seeing more. I’ll be driving up your way this spring on a little adventure from Prince Rupert to Tuktoyuktuk. I hope that it doesn’t provide too many adventures that go sideways!
Oh that’ll be a great trip! I’m sure you’ll be fine, just make a trip plan when you head up the Dempster or go on any hikes. People are amazingly helpful up here too!
Keep uploading, keep the stories coming. Love your style
I plan to! Thanks so much for the support.
So interesting, something I knew nothing about, what a nice guy and a great tribute, thanks Stacy
Love this channel, great narrator makes it enjoyable, thank you
Thanks for watching!
We lived in SoCal until fairly recently, and one morning I was drinking my coffee on the porch off our second floor bedroom. All of a sudden I heard this crazy loud grinding noise and jumped up to see a hot air balloon as it grazed our roof and sailed on down to the valley, barely missing other roofs along the way. I saw first hand how unpredictable they can be. This story sounds like a nightmare for everyone involved. What an amazing character though!
Wow, that’s intense!
it is well possible that the weight disbalance made by trying to pull a person into a balloon basket midflight might have started rocking the basket to an extent it would have doomed them all...
he was saving their lives I think.
Wonderful video. I just found your channel and look forward to more stories in the future. New Subscriber!! Go for 1000!
Woohoo thx!
Ahhh Bless. I love that you talk about them in such a way that I feel like I know I all these people. Great Job. Rest Easy Brian.
"he soaked the wicker in the bathtub which i'm sure his family just loved"
lol. just like how my husband loves how I hang my kayaking drysuit in the middle of the kitchen to dry...
What a lovely guy! Very inspiring life.
Keep em com'in! Well done!
Thank you!
Now, that is passion.
R.I.P Brian this man was a legend
He didn't want to risk a passenger's life by letting them try to pull him up 😭💜
4:17 Looks like Donald Sutherland in Kelly’s Heroes! 😂
🤣🤣
thank you for this moving story. You told Brian's story with so much empathy, it was a great tribute to him. Thank God the family survived!
He saved three lives with his last words teaching how to drive that balloon
I didn’t know that you and your dad went ballooning. Cool.
Sad ending for such a neat guy. 😢
I love how you tell Boland's story. Thank you for your videos. I just watched them all and can't wait for more!
Thanks so much!
Great channel! Thank you for getting me away from my true crime for a least a little bit
Ha I love the true crime too! Thx for watching!
You're so respectful in your videos. Thank you for that!
What a beautiful tribute❤ I didnt know him but his light shines on through this sad but beautiful story🌱
Just before the Big Lockdown my husband and I traveled to 12 countries, some of it for his work. We went all over Turkey, both the European section and the Asian, which is where I had one of the best experiences of my life.🧿 50 hot air balloons met in the pre-dawn darkness to prepare in the Cappadocian Desert of Central Turkey. There were rock formations for dozens of miles that reminded me of the ‘dribble’ sand additions to our castles at the beach. These, however, contained ancient churches carved into them from the 1st and 2nd centuries. We lifted off in the dark with the other gorgeous balloons and gradually watched the sunrise. The splendor had me crying. We flew over the top of a wedding on a flat rock, we saw thousands of bright stars, and flew for more than an hour. I LOVED this segment
about the balloon man! My sister and her family live in Vermont; what area of the state was he from?
Wow that sounds amazing! Brian lived in Post Mills, Vermont.
I will mirror someone else's comment, that I like how most of the video celebrated his life and didn't only focus on the tragedy. I've been watching slews of these "disaster gone wrong" videos lately and they seem to try to "entice the viewer" from the get go about the tragedy that will happen. The narrator will say something like: "everyone loved him and he just was so unique and loved his craft..BUT...all that was about to change "* cue haunting music in the background". Like, the narration can't say anything fruitful about the person's life without having to instantly remind us viewers that tragedy was about to happen. I absolutely love that you picked happy music for this when showing his pics and I love that you showed us him & his sense of life first. This seems like more honest storytelling and like it's not designed just to get us hooked on distaster.
After watching so many other videos (*not your videos ) it became too much for my soul to bear all the haunting music and sad stories ....I want to hear about these incidents but I also want to hear about their life. Your video didn't have me leaving with that heavy feeling on my soul, but I still got to hear the story !
I'm glad others are liking this way of telling a story. I'm way more interested in the person's life rather than a moment that led to their death or accident. I think you also need to know as much as you can about them to understand why they made the decisions they did. It's a HUGE part of their story and only telling the gory details is missing so much.
New sub here! Just found your channel and love the warmth, humour and respect for the subject you bring to your storytelling. Thanks!
AMAZING!! Please upload more!!
I love your channel! YT decided I needed it in my feed & I happy it showed up because I’m binging all the vids. I love learning about people who are different than me & I’m not an adventurer so these stories are so cool to me. I appreciate how determine everyone is in your stories, even when they’re maybe a little unprepared. But I esp love hearing about the people who are prepared & how quick thinking & the correct supplies can turn a dire situation into a survivable one
Thanks for watching!
For some reason, this made me cry.
Well narrated story. Thank you.
What a very different type of tragedy, thanks for memorializing it.
Maybe she should have yelled at him that they NEED him in the basket so they can get down safely.
I wish he could have hung on a little longer as the balloon came to rest in the poplars.😢
Since finding your channel yesterday, I’ve watched all of the uploads! Your laid-back, informative style of storytelling is very easy to listen to and has become my favourite outdoor/adventure story-telling channel! Excited to see your channel grow and to watch new videos to come 🤘
Welcome aboard!

I just found your channel! Wonderful!
Yay! Welcome!! And thanks for watching.
Lovely story, thank you
Very eccentric man ecliptic as well a pure genius in his all right .❤
Love your channel and how you tell the story of the person involved!!!!
Thanks so much! I love diving into people's stories!
What a guy! RIP Brian…
What a lovely tribute.
Loved this story. Just loved it
What does it mean to "find 7 firetrucks while ballooning" and take them home?😄 Like he landed in a field that had an abandoned firetruck, so he got in and started up the engine and drove it home, and that happened 6 more times?
Yes!!! That's how he filled up his garage full of stuff.😅
I just found your channel and it seems pretty new. I love subjects like this and I'm quite impressed and captivated by your channel and the way you tell stories. You have a real knack!! I hope you keep it up!
This was a very interesting story. Nice job on the very thorough reporting on his lifelong love of ballooning. It was fascinating! Also it gave me more than just a glimpse into who this guy was. Rather than gloss over his life, you dug deep into his passion and it made for an addictive, very compelling story.
I was also very moved by your story on Emma Kelty. That was the first one of yours that I watched and it's what really drew me into Adventures Gone Wrong. As a woman of about her same age, I used to do solo adventures until I was about 42 or 43. Nothing terrible happened to me. It's just that I found solo traveling lonely, isolating, boring, depressing and, given the paucity of actual joy, way, way to pricy. The only place I solo travel to now is Arizona because I lived there for about half a year and I have some familiarity so I actually feel ok trekking out there by myself (I live in Chicago, so it's quite a distance, but I still do it every now and again).
Although I would never, ever, ever have chosen to do what Kelty did, I do admire her spirit. Like many, I have conflicting feelings about her journey. I think what she was doing was far, far too dangerous for a solo, young white woman and I think she should have turned back, especially after that a college student warned her of the troubles ahead. I find it interesting, as you pointed out, that she seemed to change her mindset somewhere along the trip and decided she was bound and determined to make it all the way through rather than play it by ear. Tragically, this was her ultimate downfall.
Yes, Kelty should have gotten herself more training and had more guides and companions along the way. What she did was incredibly brave but, I have to admit, a bit reckless IMO.
Anyway, thank you for your awesome videos!!!
Thanks for the kind words! I love making these videos and hearing other people’s take on them so yes, more are coming.
Outstanding!
Only just found your channel and I must say you got me hooked 😮😅 Iv 2 more videos to watch of yours before I’m fully caught up ❤ you are a fabulous storyteller x
Yay! Thank you!
Beautiful story ❤️ 🎈🎈
Your really funny, I love watching you now that I've found your channel! :)
Thanks Rory, lots more videos to come!
Cheers!!!
I really enjoy your channel. Hi from West Australia ❤
Cheers Brian.
He was incredible!
Great video. Thank you.
Great channel. Love it. Cheers!
Thanks for watching!
This guy sounds awesome! Im not even afterway into the video
He had a pretty interesting life!
I love your channel 👌
I just found this channel. The stories are riveting, really great stuff. I think Brian knew that it would endanger everyone in the basket to try and save him, risk tipping the basket with everyone in it or otherwise was too dangerous or pointless.
Cheers Brian
Cheers to Brian
Love this channel :))) please do more videos :)
Working on the next one now, aiming to get it out in a few days. Thanks for the support!
Nice Work
You’re an excellent storyteller 🌝🌺
THANK YOU
🙏 🕊 RIP. What a fantastic man 🎉😢😢
RIP BRIAN
I love your story telling. I noticed your Alaska sweatshirt. Hello from Alaska.
Hello there Alaska!
Fascinating and so sad
Just guessing, but he probably assumed Emily and her Dad could figure out something as basic as a propane burner and ease the balloon down in short order. Regardless, he was an interesting guy. Thanks for sharing his story,
So nobody thought an anchor might be handy?
