Don‘t forget that most of the sailors in the last centuries couldn‘t swim! Vasco da Gama, Cook, they all had such a crew but they did unimaginable deeds. So she is/was in good company…👍♥️
That’s what life vests are for. I’m sure there are some not too bulky that will keep you afloat in the sea and that you could wear all the time when onboard. Regardless, swimming is overrated when you’re so far from any shore with nowhere to swim to 😁
Love the respectful way you bring these tales of daring, that often end in tragedy. But I’d bet an old ten bob note he’s a Morris, Maurice and not a MauRees, Maurice!! 😊
I've read lots of these shipwreck/survival stories and find them fascinating. I don't remember this one though. Thanks for telling the story. I can't imagine having that strong a will to survive to do what they did, but you never know what you'll do until you're in a situation.
This channel just happened upon me and am so grateful …..they keep on coming too ….. It’s the no-nonsense telling and non embroidery that makes them addictive and unique ! Quality and enjoyment guaranteed . Thank you 👍😻
I remember reading a book in the 70s called Survive the Savage Sea about a family adrift at sea. They were adrift for 37 days. In the telling of the story, when rescued, the crew on the boat could hardly get near them because of the smell coming off them. They were rubbing "fish oil" on their body because of the exposure burns.
This story is truly mind blowing! I cant even imagine what it took to maintain the will to survive after all they went through! Thank you for bringing this 'tail' our way! Looking forward to the next one!
Lol almost sounds like if they had followed the turtles instead of chasing them away and eating them then they probably would have continued straight to the Galapagos 🤷♀️🤣
I always wondered about people lost at sea and starving, when the ocean is full of food. They managed to catch a lot of fish, and birds and turtles. Makes sense.
Pretty cool channel. Just the type of content I enjoy. Well narrated, rich on details and illustrated! Keep up with the good work. One million subscribers coming your way.
The whaling ship Essex was sunk by a vengeful whale, (I think it was a Humpback) off the Chilean coast in the 1800s. They had little time to salvage anything from the sinking ship before abandoning it. Boarding several skiffs, the survivors were soon scattered after a storm, unlike this couple things didn't end well for most of the crew. The only survivors resorted to cannibalism and not the "let's eat dead people" variety. Herman Melville's Moby Dick is rumoured to be based upon the story. I'm new to your channel and am really enjoying playing catch-up, it's a pleasant change from listening to the better known but usually fatal outcomes prevalent on this format. Thank you.
@davymckeown4577 such an interesting story! I really enjoyed it and was also horrified by that book. The movie was pretty good too from what I remember!
Great video I’ve watched it twice now. Thanks for sharing. I just have to say though who will go sailing without learning to swim first? I thought process I just can’t wrap my head around.
Thank you! I loved your video so much, I bought their book and read it. What an amazing couple. I think you should make a video on their second book, showing how you can learn from previous tragedies.
I read that book a year before I decided to come to America in 77, it actually gave me confidence to make the trip.... travel was kinda limited back then..... thanks for the trip down memory lane....✌️💛
@@Because-rt8qs If you "think" that's a "smart" comment you are only accentuating your stupidity. Learning to swim prior to living on a boat is about SAFETY and COMMON SENSE. Duh!
I question the wisdom of going on a sailing trip around the world without having taken swimming lessons yet. Surely they could have arranged that?! But other than that I really admire their resourcefulness and they did the best they could to take precautions.
Who sails around the world without being able to swim? I feel like that would be terrifying. I’m sure you know about the show “I Shouldn’t Be Alive” but if not there’s a bunch of amazing stories just like this.. actually I’m surprised their story was never featured.
The thing that stands out to me is the lack of distress call. They had 40 minutes to try to plug the leak- but couldn’t spare 5 minutes to get on Channel 13 or 121.5 for an SOS? Makes no sense
I’ve had some of my own crazy adventures, especially when I was much younger in my teens and my early 20s. To this day, I feel more connected to nature and animals than I do most people. I love the adventures that you talk about as they speak to the essence of my soul, wanting to explore this extraordinary world that God created. I am not sure how my state of mind could’ve handled being out on the ocean for so long as I have a healthy fear of the storms that are so powerful out at sea.
Wow, that is such a long time to be adrift in a tiny life raft! Amazing that they were willing to do anything to survive killing birds and turtles. The threatening animals turned out to be blessings for their survival! I can only imagine the relief they felt to finally be picked up. What a survival story, great video!! 👍🏻👍🏻
I liked the story of the Englishman who departed fair Albion for a roundtheworld sail using a school atlas as his charts. He was rescued several times before succumbing to reason.
Yes I would eat what I could. Surviving all the skin irritations would be very hard to maintain positivity. I would have to constantly remind myself to be smarter than what environment threw at me. Mother Nature is awe inspiring so I would hope to remain strong to survive to another chapter of my life. Don’t think I could drink the blood either.
Scary, but they had a good chance for survival. Your straight delivery of the story is always appreciated. Wish you had images of sperm whales; they're obviously secretive.
Wait wait wait. They decided to travel the world by sea, AND SHE DIDNT LEARN TO SWIM??? that’s like trying to travel the world by asphalt and not being able to walk….
I remember hearing this story as a kid, when they were found it was big news. Trigger fish are delicious cooked, not sure about raw, im sure most things taste good when you're hungry. Everyone, please teach your children how to swim.
🔴Check out this story about a mountain biker who just about lost his life while out for a regular Sunday bike ride!🔴 ua-cam.com/video/5hT3M9Ksyo4/v-deo.html🚵
I remember it well. I was living in Southampton at the time when it hit the news. Their boat was a Golden Hind 31 built of marine plywood and bilge keeled. Nothing wrong with this design or the hull material. A lot of people cast doubt on their story at the time as they were in remarkably good shape when they were rescued. They had no ocean sailing experience other than cruising the South coast of England. Also the fact that they were of the office workers ilk rather than the hardy outdoor adventurous types.
Where were they found? They drifted 2400 miles, but it’s not specified which direction, or even which continent the rescue boat was from…? [edit:] after scouring the video, I saw a caption on one of the b&w photos that they were greeted onshore by a Korean ambassador. So they made it to Asia?? That’s a cool detail! I really like this channel and all the videos, but adding details like that can really enrich the stories :)
There was this map I forgot to include, oops! It shows where they were rescued, parallel to Costa Rica but thousands of miles away and they were drifting further out to the Pacific. They were taken by the Korean ship to Hawaii, I think I mentioned that in the video. paradise.docastaway.com/maurice-maralyn-bailey-117-days-adrift/#foobox-1/16/Map-3.jpg
The fact that they stayed married after being stuck together for 4 months on a tiny life raft speaks volume to the strenght of their relationship 😂
100%!!! 😆
Definitely! And after being rescued, talking about going somewhere else!
That's the truth!!
If anything it would make a relationship stronger 🤔
Who else would understand what you've been through and how you understand life because of it?
The fact that she couldn’t swim is shocking 😮
Right!? I wouldn’t be full time sailing if I didn’t know how to swim.
Every Australian kid is taught to swim by the age of five!
I learned to swim at 50, it was a proud moment
So stupid to go on a trip like that without getting that essential life saving skill down!
@fcandido7 why did u wait so long?
This is a great channel. I’m really enjoying it. You tell the stories with compassion and a snappiness that makes it easy listening 💕..
well put
She's terrific.I'm a new fan!
I love your story telling. It is amazing to me someone living on a yacht cannot swim! It is so easy to learn and kind of useful in her situation.
I know right!? So odd. I’d be panicking all day if I lived on a boat and didn’t know how to swim.
Don‘t forget that most of the sailors in the last centuries couldn‘t swim! Vasco da Gama, Cook, they all had such a crew but they did unimaginable deeds. So she is/was in good company…👍♥️
What would be useful about knowing how to swim when you’re hundreds of miles from shore?
That’s what life vests are for. I’m sure there are some not too bulky that will keep you afloat in the sea and that you could wear all the time when onboard. Regardless, swimming is overrated when you’re so far from any shore with nowhere to swim to 😁
Out in the middle of the ocean, being able to swim is just prolonging the inevitable.
Those two had a tenacious will to live. Thanks for bringing us this story, your channel is so interesting and I'm looking forward to more.
They really did, I can’t imagine 4 months in those conditions. Thx for watching!
They had a great marriage that sustained them through everything!

Could be! Every video I saw referred to him the way I pronounced it but there weren’t very many out there.
No offense but who goes on a sailing trip and doesnt learn to swim first?
They did.
My thoughts exactly!
That was a traditional thing, it was bad luck for a sailor to know how to swim. So, lots of people have done it.
I did when I needed a job
@@Because-rt8qsno wonder why sailors believed in superstition.
