It is a Custom Shop Jag-Stang, one of two, made for him by Fender to combine his two favorite guitars, Jaguar and Mustang. The blue one is now owned by the guitarist for REM.
If you want, he played "Territorial Pissings" in some 1993 shows without his guitar ;) And there is some pics from 1989 which shows Kurt singing without guitat
If I had to guess why Kurt was singing without a guitar for the remainder of Drain You, I'd say it was because he had some technical issues with his guitar (resulting in Kurt's guitar not being heard, though I can hear Pat's guitar just fine) so Kurt threw his guitar down and just grabbed a mic and just sung the rest of the set.

I would never have thought the guys could pull it off in what at first glance appears to be a rather sterile environment, with matching sterile outfits. Rape Me great warmup. Pennyroyal Tea, oh yeah. "Give me a Leonard NIMOY afterworld"!! And then Drain Me. AND I AM DRAINED! The bridge solo after Kurt throws down his guitar, gathers his innards, and LETS GOOOOOOOO. NNNNNNNNVVVVVNNNNNN Sounds like you got to see them live? If so, I bow to you. You're spot on. When I first "discovered" them this last October, even with the very bad quality videos that are on UA-cam, watching them was fascinating. The intensity was --well, Krist is on the side pogo-sticking, the drummer is wailing. And Kurt, I've never seen anything like him, I can't tear my eyes away. He's absolutely freaking mesmerizing, and a lot of times not even doing that much, and yet I stare at his amazing beauty and gracefulness and INTENSITY as he does whatever it is he's doing. Yeah, hypnotic is as good a word as any. And I think this performance at Canal+ is one of the best, as I've stated above. I come back to this one over and over. I could gush on but will stop now. Thx for posting. :>)
NNNNNNNNVVVVVNNNNNN Hmm. I was going to listen to the performance right here--but it's been "disabled by the video owner" and directs you to the UA-cam site. well okay then. I just wanted to add that if you watch Pat Smear, he can't keep his shoes on, always doffing them at first chance. At the Canal+ right after Rape Me, he quickly leans over and slips off his shoes. On the MTV Unplugged, same thing on his stool, bends over and off they go. lol. :>)

Kurt was a big Beatles fan. That was actually key to Nirvana's success, and here he pays full homage, even doing the legendary Beatle stage bow (2:43, they clearly had it planned, Kurt looks at the rest).
Fer Abra No but I've only seen it once or twice, noticed Pat kick his uncomfortable shoes off that was funny :) old style band is reminiscent of the great In Bloom video.
John Arundell Yep, the In Bloom video. That's obviously the Ed Sullivan show. The Foo Fighters also played a full show of their Wasting Light album in full Beatles 1964 costume. Not just Kurt, but Dave Grohl is also a big fan. I don't think Pat Smear is a fan though! Did you know the Beatles pre-fame leather jackets look influenced the Ramones? and that The Ramones name came from Paul McCartney's stage name which was "Paul Ramon"?
Fer Abra Nah I don't know much about the Ramones, I've just seen one very good documentary film called 'End Of The Century' :) absolutely not interested whatsoever in the Foo Fighters, never heard one song I liked or wanted to hear again. Dave should do what he does best which is bashing those drums into submission. Such an incredibly boring band I can't believe how successful they've been it's a mystery to me? 😢
The show of Nirvana without FX on empty stage is more powerful than all stupid shaw of beyonce etc today. Because it was honestly & pur energy. I love Kurt for his real soul, what was reflected in his talent & charisme.
Absolutely stunning and beautiful. When the encore starts you can feel that uncapturable energy transcend from the band to us, what a reckless rendition of drain you. Everything falls into place. Without words. This is how drain you was always supposed to sound like.
If you've never had the chance to talk to Kurt or see Nirvana live, you missed out on something truly special. THIS is Nirvana at their very bestvin their absolute prime...right before he died.
Nirvana was/is thee greatest band to ever play music... in my humble opinion. There hasn't been a band with that strand of DNA since, such rare, extraordinary sound, tempo, lyrics, composition and presence. Never seen anything like it, ever.
still angry at him for leaving at his prime and not allowing the world some real good stuff to come but... that voice man, what a fucking voice... just tears you up... damned it!
Best version of Drain You I have ever heard I saw them play in 1992 in Melbourne at the Palace, I was 17... so many years later I still get up and thrash about to Nirvana. NIRVANA FOREVER and if you don't agree........... too bad.
God they were so good here, I never saw this.....I love how he just threw the guitar when it stopped working, I don't know I'd get sick of playing my songs over and over a bazillion times...I just wish he was still here... the end of Drain You is the first time I ever seen him sing w/o holding a guitar, He is so pleasing to the eye...in every way...
-For the first time in the show's history, Canal+ allowed the show to go on for an extra few minutes after the normal ending time to allow Nirvana to play an extra song. Things like these could only be achieved by a band so important as Nirvana was and still is , almost 25 years later they are the last band that really really mattered.
It's such a beautiful moment when the public want another song so the studio allow them to play drain you. An emotional moment as well is when Kurt's guitar doesn't work anymore so he just fucking screams and sing as if was the last time he was gonna do it. Perfect performance!!
Sad but true, but I have a grunge band, and I hope I will influence more young people into this,to make grunge bands and put grunge back on the map again!
punkcrown Stop to be arrogant. I know that there is a lot of band as great as Nirvana. Even better. But can you name a band's leader nowaday who is as famous, as symbolic and as important as Kurt Cobain ? No. And do you know why ? Because he was the last rockstar. Next time, think before talking.
Anim Dub lmao he isn't famous because of his skills or whatsoever, partly yes but he's mostly known for creating the grunge movement and entering the 27 club and dying that young, they're symbolic and legendary yes but that doesn't make them more valuable vis-à-vis the other rock bands, then again, my opinion
+Johnny Marques So used to the real lyrics that I didn't even notice that. I need to check other live performances to see if he was doing that on a regular basis.
nirvana look surpisingly cool in suits

wait, how do you know that ? I thought that only us French people knew this
I heard it on the east coast for a long time till it died off in 2013

lol they loved to play ''Rape me'' in ''non-english speaking'' TV shows
Well yea, English-speaking shows don’t want them to play it because it’s “offensive”
@@MrLump Not really, why did they play it on SNL and "Live and Loud"? haha.
Zack F just because it may be offensive, doesn't mean it's limited to non-English countries
They loved to play it on anything nationally or internationally shown. The punk rock side of them. Showing off taboo subjects like any real artists.

The one where Kurt's guitar gave up, so he went full Joplin-mode.
Cleo Z I love how he throws it away because halfway through the last song he has no use for it :)
Nirvana..
Amazing! Never heard Penneroyal Tea better than this. Kurt is in his best way ever. Smear´s backing vocals does great!
It's the first time I see Nirvana taking a bow at the end of a song, it's great!
That scream in Drain You! Reminds me of Jim Morrison, both of them legends.
that dude Kurt pretends to sing The End by The Doors at Reading '91 :)
John Arundell Thanks didn't see that (:
kurt is cooler than JM:)
***** he was influenced by Jimi and the Beatles the most
***** he really fucking liked Jimi considering they both are from Seattle
Absolutely stunning and beautiful.
When the encore starts you can feel that uncapturable energy transcend from the band to us, what a reckless rendition of drain you. Everything falls into place. Without words. This is how drain you was always supposed to sound like.
Wow. 20 years ago today...
I love you, Kurt.
after his guitar goes out he had a rage scream
kingadalou he also changed the words from 'drain you' to 'slay you' afterwards lol
oh yeah
first time i heard a scream like that from kurt
If you've never had the chance to talk to Kurt or see Nirvana live, you missed out on something truly special. THIS is Nirvana at their very bestvin their absolute prime...right before he died.
Still miss you Kurt!
Amazing performance, especially by pat. So underrated
Dang the first and the last I will see kurdt singing with no guitar damn mustang gave out at the end.the group is very tight and very punk rock.
My daughter has only 13 years old and she loves Nirvana and all the 80’s and 90’s music!!😉😬😁
drain you is insane
Nirvana was/is thee greatest band to ever play music... in my humble opinion. There hasn't been a band with that strand of DNA since, such rare, extraordinary sound, tempo, lyrics, composition and presence. Never seen anything like it, ever.
still angry at him for leaving at his prime and not allowing the world some real good stuff to come but... that voice man, what a fucking voice... just tears you up... damned it!
There's more immediacy and grit in the audio than in, say, the VEVO version perhaps. Like this one.
It's an incredibly RAW recording. Amazing upload!
I FUCKING LOVE HIM SO MUCH
was never that fussed on Pennyroyal tea on the album but this performance makes it sound epic
je les ai vu en concert j ai adoré
Veinard :)
He actually played an entire show in '89 without a guitar because he broke it the night before. There is audio available for the show but no video.
Fucking awesome set.
This is what the outcasts became so don't underestimate us
It's such a beautiful moment when the public want another song so the studio allow them to play drain you. An emotional moment as well is when Kurt's guitar doesn't work anymore so he just fucking screams and sing as if was the last time he was gonna do it. Perfect performance!!
I miss Nirvana and I miss "Nulle part ailleurs" !
Thank you to bring it back :)
Nirvana was the last real Rock band. Now it's done, no more rockstar, no more grunge, and no more innovation.
Queens of the Stone Age
GNR were the last megaband
Such a awesome intense performance. I literally got chills after Kurts scream in Drain You.
"Give me a Leonard Nimoy afterworld"
When does he say that?
+Jemima Khan at 2º verse of Pennyroaltea ( 3:47)
+Johnny Marques So used to the real lyrics that I didn't even notice that. I need to check other live performances to see if he was doing that on a regular basis.
and, did you check it? I am astonish about that
Kurt had an amazing voice.
