The bass is so present in this song and it’s beautiful.
It sounds so creamy, I love it
So present that what?
He was fucking up big time, then hit the groove.
Sound fking awful not very skilled bass
@@Ownz1982 its because of the soundguy on this show.
The quality is so good, it's seems like they still performing these days...

1:44 one of the best shots in their history
Totally!
Agree
Damn, thanks for the heads up! Might be my favorite 10+ seconds of live music performance ever...best moments in live music history overall! When Teen Spirit premiered on MTV in September 1991 I was 14 and needed rock n roll to speak to me in a major way. It did, and to this day still does thanks to live performances like this one, particularly at 1:44 just like you mentioned. Four individuals let go of emotion and in a absolutely beautiful moment they gave into a chaotic release. Heads down, feet rocking one to the other, and instruments flailing they were each on their own, yet it reminded me of a great orchestra. I see bands give in to the music in similar fashion everyday. Not so much like Nirvana on this song. Krist Novoselic could barely hold back from the start, but Cobain and Pat Smear held back till that 1:44 mark. Cobain finally dipping to his knees and Pat Smear twisting and pouncing around like some badass bull couldn't throw him. He proved he belonged among modern rock gods, at least when it came time to rockin fn roll.
"Sit and drink pennyroyal tea. Distill the life that's inside of me."
Pat smear’s backing vocals are fantastic!
Artyom Yes. And he also looks like he's taking a massive dump while doing so 😆
no they aren't
His mics off!
MadFox you’re entitled to your opinion, but I’d have to disagree. I think more than anything, he helped Kurt a lot. I think his pleasant attitude helped keep a fast cracking band together and was as good a friend as someone could be to Kurt during his troubled final months.
Pat smears backups are trash.
I'm a 2 weeks fetus and i love this song.
Hilarious and original.

Sorely Missed
I wish Pat had a chance to play w/them longer. Dude's gots crazy awesome energy
I believe so. He joined them in 93.
i think he should never have been
@@prpwnage9296why? you could see his energy here, and his backing vocals are pretty good
Nah. It's always been 3 piece band. He was unnecessary. Backing vocals belonged to Dave. Smear spoils it for me, and I'm not alone on that one
@@Frank_KimonoKurt himself said that Nirvana was not supposed to be a trio and he needed another guitarist, and if someone knew what Nirvana needed, that one was Kurt Cobain 💀
I love the lyric “ give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld, so I can sigh eternally”!! What an amazing writer…Thank you Kurt.
He sings "Leonard Nimoy" in this one
Damn, this is the lyric that brought me here. Thinking about it and the cherry flavored antacid line
I wish people would include Pat Smear in the conversations about Nirvana. He was awesome all around. Great musician, vocalist, guitarist and just a class act overall! All we can do now is wonder what could have been...
Stoned Immaculate I agree with you. Pat is always a member to me.
He’s had an epic career with the germs, meat puppets and foo fighters as well
Except he only joined Nirvana after In Utero for the live stuff. He didn't help with writing or recording. I'm sure he would've if there were another album afterward, but naw
@@fredd036 He didn't help with recording the albums, but all these later 93/94 shows wouldn't have been what they are if not for Pat. Hell, they wouldn't have _ever_ played Very Ape if it weren't for Pat.
Tony Boleno I get that that’s your opinion, but I feel like it’s not based on anything, and therefore unreliable.
Yo, Pat can really hit those high notes!!!
Paul Sandoval hahahahahahah
He had/has a (kind of) deep voice too, which makes everything better.
My favorite Nirvana song. Unlike many of their tracks that rely on hooks and ironic/sarcastic lyrics Kurt, for a rare time, gets obvious and personal, with some of his greatest lines ever. And the music matches the feeling of hopelessness so perfectly. I relate to this song so much.
25 years ago today a troubled genius was lost.
hello? something in the way? lithium?
One of my favorites too, but ive got to disagree with you. these are some shallow (but still good) lyrics and the song is like 50% hook
I think in some ways we can all relate to this song in on way or another
@@tonyboleno8191 we listen to Nirvana for what it is. If you want lyrics that get u by the feels that’s what the other early 90’s bands are for. I love it all
@@tonyboleno8191 so’s ur mother
The atmosphere in the 90s was so great and beautiful.
That mustang looks so good hanging on Kurt.
i didnt get the joke :O
I sure do hope he doesn't throw it to the ground
@@fasuto8656 That would have been so rad..
@@Tomnedreb look at the video of them playing Drain You in this very same show, you might end up surprised
@@fasuto8656 I know. I've seen the whole show probably 100 times. hehe
In an era when most guitar players are shredding a thousand notes per second and basically going "hey mom look at me!!!!" It's refreshing to see that simplicity can actually be superior. Sometimes less is more, Kurt knew it all along.
It Came from the Sky Misfits were the same way- so simple yet that simplification achieves more than what others try by making their work overly complicated.
Where exactly did you see any simplicity?
Everyone with practice and patience can be a shredder imo, but not anyone can come up with those kind of catchy riffs and powerful lyrics even Kurt himself said "it wasn't that meaningful" about his on music haha
@@rabidbwah3430 Not really that edgy
Less is always more.
I'm realizing I'm 30 and Kurt was younger than me here...damn
Now Kurt has been dead longer than he was alive. Let that sink in.
I feel you buddy. I’m also 30. He helped the both of us get here.
Let me tell you something, kurt only knew his own band Nirvana for 7 years and we know Nirvana for 30+ years
Man Dave is pounding those drums!
Sonaban mejor en cd que en directo vocalmente se nota muchísimo la diferencia parece otra persona cantando en directo que por cd
This live version is the best version for this track. The whole band smash it 💥🙌🏼 ENERGIES ⚡️
Wow, blonde angel, I can't believe that when you plays in this show, you're just a 27-year old man, while today you could be a star od man: happy birthday and rest in peace....gone but not forgotten!
I think he was 26. This was filmed in earlyFebruary of 94 and his birthday was in late February.
I was watching this live on TV at the time, and never forgot the musical shock.. Kurt and the band at their very best
The quality is so pure!
Pat really added something special to the band as well.
It just meshed so well he was great at backing vocals, and I think a good emotional support as well for kurt.
Love this performance of one of Nirvana’s best songs
If you listen carefully at 0:01 , you can hear the sound of the song starting

I'm absolutely Kurt obsessed but also, shout out to Pat Smear, who is it seems an often forgotten member of Nirvana and still rocking today with Foo Fighters. Go Pat!

Dave is a monster on the drums!
Yes I agree!
Loved to see that they were feeling themselves during this song, especially during the solo. This might be my fav performance of this song, great to see Kurt happy.
Me too! They were so into it. You can really feel that
Yes! Happiest Ive ever seen him..
LOVE the way KRIST always jumps up & down to the beat! 💗
Me too krist is cool
One of their best live performances 100 percent. Everyone's on form, a lot of energy and Kurt's voice sounds Excellent
The fact that "anaconda" by Nicki Minaj has more views than this is depressing. Rest in peace Kurt. We miss you. 😔
+taveon timmons the fact you even mentioned anaconda is depressing as well.but i agree with you people these days think and hear with there asses because the shit today would never been able to see the light of day
+- -Unit Theory- - even more sad is the fact people would rather see and listen to words about the ass.... No more emotion and the new "heavy metal" or whatever has the exact aame emotion as every other song that is metal now adays. I feel the punk rock of the '90s may never see the true light of day.
JG Music your right
+taveon timmons who is Nicki Minaj ?
+Dmitry vgera "I wish I was like you, easily amused"
This clearly is my favourite Nirvana performance ever. Fun fact: Kurt was clean during this tour, which explains why he's so goddamn good
Eh. - This is when he was using most heavily a few weeks before his suicide. He was medicinally using. He knew what dosage to take to make him capable of doing whatever he had to get through on that particular day. If you see interviews from this period he always had those glassy eyes.
@@a5dr3 yeah by this point he was a functioning addict

Nobody hit them harder than Dave
Hahaha he's a beast ain't he
no matter what he said about hating performing toward the end of his life, kurt is so obviously having fun here and it’s cool to see that because his death kind of overshadows him these days
This concert sounded so good. and the quality of the video, too. It looks like it could've been recorded recently, but obviously not. I showed this to my friend who didn't know who they were, and he asked me when they were touring the US. lmao.
My favorite version. Is that Kurt accidently getting unplugged for a sec during his solo? Or a break of string? And for whatever reason, it makes it all sounds even better and more perfect! I love and miss you so much, Fishy!
I forgot how powerful this band was! With Kurt’s Vocals and Dave’s powerful drumming it all comes back to me now! Great Song that he usually played as a ballad but this sounded good too!
RIP Kurt I hope you found what you were looking for but I doubt it. Who knows where you are now.
R.I.P Kurt Cobain, Leonard Cohen, Leonard Nimoy.
Kurt is sighing... eternally.
RIP Cleopatra VII
Also gOD... rip.
@Dumb Robot Da Vinky?
Kurt, i miss you...
The only version I ever want to hear of this song ever again.
So damn good!
without the background singer. get a nasty high pitched yell in my right ear bud from him
now u can’t unhear it
I love how Kurt plays with words. Royal Tea then Royalty. He loves the double meanings.
Kurt fukin destroyed in this concert! It's weird he would only die a few months later. I wish I was alive back then to see him
You and me both man
Jim Vecchio well he got killed so ....
Nathan Lalande yeah i know that. re-read my comment
That's what you meant by "it's weird" ? My bad, I didn't understand (:
Sorry you forget to say what he destroyed in this concert.SO I WANT to fill that hole in the sentence. He destroyed everything even his guitar

Gran banda, increíble el despliegue de energia de Dave Grohl en la bateria, un monstruo, como potencia la música de Nirvana.
Incredible performance (& video quality)! I love how they all seemed so emotionally deep into the song. It’s almost like I felt their energy thru my iPad & earbuds.
Honestly better than studio version amazing job
It is because he was clean during this show
je me rappelle parfaitement ce jour là! j'avais 13 ans et j'étais collée devant nulle part ailleurs! quelle puissance quelle jouissance!! 🥰

He looks and performed so good here and less than 2 months later gone. It makes me ill.
The band sound so freaking good at this point. Absolutely killer performance.
The combo dave give when its start to reff is crazy
i dont like people who dislike pat he's a good part of the band it might been a little less then a year but still i thiink it was sick played
«Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld
So I can sigh eternally.» RIP²
he actually says give me Leonard Nemoy afterworld at 1:02
lol when he starts changing lyrics (which he's done countless times) things are fkd up with his guitar or mic or fxbox or amps etc
Why did he have to die!? :( I didn't know him, of course, but not only do I love his compositions, but I also know that he hated sexism, racism and homophobia - all things which need to vanish from this planet.
He was indeed too perfect for this world..
he shot him self cuz he never wants to be forgotten.... he wants to stay as a legacy
REALLY YEAH
He was an idealist in this world, he always spoke about how he felt alienated from everybody else. Eventually you either turn into one of them or you die.
miguel giorgis
THIS! It's really hard to be an idealist when there will ALWAYS be bad things going on in the world.
David Grohl is playing like a maniac back there. Love it. The video quality is amazing too…almost as if it’s in HD, but this was well before that was available.
Nirvana symbolizes the end of the Great rock and roll era. The perfect kind of an end.
Perfect? What the passing of Kurt was perfect? You can’t mean that, cam you? I agree. Music isnt what it was in the 90s. It was a special time. Vs chorus vs chorus bridge chorus etc.... simple powerful emotional. Awesome. But how was it a perfect ending ? Sorry to interject I barely ever comment but reading that made me uneasy. How In the fu€¥ can this person say a death was perfect? What in the fu€£ are you saying ? Just pissed me off a bit so please elaborate.
SteveZach chill, he was not exactly talking about his death he was talking about the end of Nirvana THE BAND ALL TOGETHER. And how it ended on a good note.
@@stevezach3697 nobody is gonna take you seriously with you spelling words like "fu€£"
Nirvana was the end of rock cause it died shortly after kurt lingering until 1996. If your old enough to remember mtv during and before 1996 it was very clear rock was rock
Not the end but the start of the declining
i like that they went with the green day style, Dress Proper, but play with incredible amounts of energy. They completely rocked that look.
The best part is the solo

One can only imagine of what great songs Kurt would be doing these days if he stayed around.
SOOOO much better with an extra guitarist. I wish SOAD would hire one. Better yet, TWO. You really want doubled rhythm guitars and a separate dude to do lead for a truly huge live sound. I also wish Daron would learn to sing in tune live, but that's not going to happen.
personally i think him singing the way he did added onto the performance as the raw style nirvana loved
Raw does not mean out of tune. Kurt was always pretty much in tune live.
mellowb1rd Pretty much ALMOST always in tune. I love Nirvana, and fucking love Kurt, but his vocals weren't pitch-perfect. But that my friend is what made his singing perfect.
His pitch was actually very good. His guitar playing was sloppy, and his voice sounded quite thin and weak sometimes, but his pitch was usually very good, and that's not as common as people think for a rock band where a shitty monitor mix can leave you guessing which notes to hit
yeah, like kurt cobain said himself: our songs were always meant to be played with 2 guitars ;) and then pat jumped in.
Whenever i am depressed I listen to this and my mood becomes happy i love nirvana alot
Yeah same dude I just broke up with my bf I just want to listen to this song
Cobain/nirvana will forever be in all our/us fans hearts pure icons much love ❤ rock on 🤘
I am seeing pat Smear singing backing vocals on this song, and he doing a great job at it.
i think this is how kurt wanted the studio version of pennyroyal tea to sound. just perfect!

Wait, Kurt...."a Leonard NIMOY afterworld"?
Well, that works, too... :-P
2:06 the start of Kurt's guitar issues, which completely dies at the climax of Drain You.
