Honestly most of what they do which I love btw, is they take chord forms, and arpeggiate them and sliding into other chord shapes and such. They have this style that's almost like I wanna call it chord shred lol. That probably sounds dumb but they love big chords and use that alot instead of power chords like a lot of bands. I've seen the video someone here mentioned and it's a good video. It's funny but a lot of people don't realize that the open chord shapes can be moved all over the neck and used just not with the open strings the same way. Obviously if you move an open g shape up a whole step the open strings will be a step to low but the fretted notes will be fine and on the open strings you can fret some notes and get some more uncommon stuff.
Josh derp when he does interviews though he talks about how Nolly and Misha taught him some of the big chords he uses. He came up with most on his own, I’m sure, but you can tell everyone in the band has a lot of the same mindsets when it comes to riff writing. They each have their own approach to a similar goal I guess.
+Nicolas Fro I agree with you, however he definitely is one of the best for THIS type of music in my opinion. Makes technical metal a lot more interesting
some of the top I'd say are people like Mateus Asato, Mattius Ekhlund, Ola Englund, Ihsahn, Marc Okubo, Plini Roessler, Aaron Marshall, Vance Valenzuela, Justin McKinney, Wes Hauch and Guthrie Govan.
Watching this guy play guitar just makes my whole fucking night. So much energy in every note. It's crazy good stuff. I remember the first time I heard this song almost 4 years ago, and I was hooked from that moment on.
I wish it was on the SE! There were 6 finishes on the 2015 model but Holcomb burst was the most commonly opted for as it's unique :) I love the SE but I'm saving for the U.S.A model, it looks stunning!
True. Like I don't think people realize how unbelievable these riffs are because they flow so well and sounds so cohesive, but this shit is off the charts difficult, tasteful, and amazing. Seeing him play it makes it more obvious
That's the entire bloody point of the video, dude. Sorry I mis read your comment.I thought you said, "you can tell he's playing it". My mistake. Have a look at Cardiacs for some other odd guitar work that may well have started all this back in the late 70's. I would say start here and work backwards... UK as usual... ua-cam.com/video/N5QYijFfOaQ/v-deo.html You can also look up Cardicas band on Wiki and be saddened.
Still IMO Periphery’s greatest song ever. They have many fantastic songs but I’ve always come back to this one, it has that rock n roll vibe but it’s still so incredibly complex.. and the guitar play is just fantastic throughout
The riff at 0:36 (also makes a return later in the song) is easily one of my favorite riffs ever written. So much power and dissonance, consequently making it so satisfying to listen to. Additionally, it works beautifully with the other guitars. What an incredible group of artists!
+Dante Kishishev Really tight indeed. Guess thats the pro level... i only see that in guitar playthroughs. In covers the least discrepant skill level is in drums, i think...
This guy is so sick, and that tone is excellent. This song is a blast to play - one of the few Periphery sings I can manage. They're one of my favorite bands to listen to, but all the bizarre arrangements and time signatures never made sense to me as a player.
I remember in an Andertons interview Misha was talking about their earlier stuff was mainly written as instrumentals and then the vocalist would just have to work around it and force some vocals o to the tracks
Yeah man, he’s SUPER clean with muting the other strings while he wants specific strings to ring out at certain times. As a guitarist, this is can be extremely hard to do at times
never been a huge prifree liker but will listen more. how he doesn't have arthritis in his fingers i dont know. never seen anyone wizz around chord progressions like that
From experience, while I was learning the 'main' riff (the one from the intro) it took me like 5 minutes to learn the fretting, but like 30 minutes just plugging away at the metronome just to get up to speed. All for 10 seconds of song. It takes a while lmao
technique kids. all about technique. why can he do such crazy movements and accurate playing with the left hand? because he isn't even thinking about the right hand. keep practicing
+Deante Daniel I think his point is that the right hand learns a few techniques and masters them through practice, but is relevant to all playing and all songs, and then the left hand only has to master each different set of shapes for different songs
+Rails2Revolution After rereading it I definitely see that I misunderstood his point. The sentence could have been interpreted two different ways. But I got it now haha.
"and then the left hand only has to master each different set of *shapes* for different songs" don't learn guitar this way. learn to play anywhere on the neck.
Jake gets panned in the centre. Misha and Mark go left and right. ...According to one interview with Mark anyway. Tbf I recogn most bands write at least 3 parts in places, at least in my music collection anyway but they just dont play it live like Periphery. Its a good think they started at the level they did because fuck getting 3 guitarists on a shitty tiny venue stage aha
+Kiko Mark is playing through the Axe FX into a PRS combo and was playing along to a backing track in the room. The amp is mic'd. What you hear in the video is his live rig with a mic in front of it with the backing track mixed into the video. We tried to mix his playing just a bit on top of the backing track so it pops. Hope you dig it.
MusicStoreLive.com That's the way to do it. sick of watching "playthroughs" where you can't tell whats live and what's the prerecorded song (watch Misha's Marigold playthrough to see what I mean)
I can't even get close to fathoming how one would even write something like this. It's so all over the place and complex but it all works so well.
He's got a video on how he writes riffs. Tldr, arpeggios and write riffs in a chord progression
Tangalang22 What? Can you Share it pelase?
@@JaviAltonaga just search up mark holcomb riff writing

All of these riffs are just constant, non-stop masterpieces.
I think Luck is a Constant 🤔
Yas.
Yo are the shiznitttttttt :) never stop the music
holy fuck. its lauren babic
Saw this comment, thought: "why're people liking this so much?" and found out about your band. Great stuff! ^^
Lauren Babic what is that? Yas? Never seen this word before.
Lauren Babic b B.B.
This man's playing is something from another world. So innovative and creative, truly beautiful to watch.
Probably one of the greatest guitar players alive right now.
No

Yeah he is probably one of the top but with anything with guitar you can't judge 1 player from the next because they are all different
that riff at 0:58 is so good I literally laughed with tears in my eyes. I mean, holy shit man

Sacredgeometry If I had a dollar for every video I saw you on Haha
Periphery has three wizards on guitar. Always loved their guitar riffages. I liked Alex but Mark is next level
+GlassMetropolis I feel like Alex was just kind of told what to do where Mark i has come in and really become a riff specialist for them.
Four, Actually.
+KingAlpaca They only have three on guitar. Nolly plays guitar sometimes, but he isn't quite to the level of the other guys.
He's amazing.
Met him and his wife today ;-)
+KingAlpaca I'm not saying he's not, he's a great guitarist, but Mark or Misha could kick his ass at it in a heartbeat. they're all amazing musicians.
best guitar finish color ever
Looks like a quilted maple, transparent gray burst
it's charcoal burst.
+wipe0utpuls3 it's actually called 'Holcomb burst' and was only available on his USA sig which is no longer in production :)
+Ben Levin It's on the Holcomb SE. Though the carve and a couple other things are different, it's still the same finish colors.
I wish it was on the SE! There were 6 finishes on the 2015 model but Holcomb burst was the most commonly opted for as it's unique :) I love the SE but I'm saving for the U.S.A model, it looks stunning!

That PRS is so beautiful... I must have it as my next six string
+Ignore14 It can be yours for the limited-run price of $3700
Phillip Betts it's production model or something now. The price of 799 and I still can't get one, dammit
Captain Pie Fox yeah, the SE version. It's still really good from what i hear
@@alyusdickey9561 it’s great, but this is not the same finish.
This is the American PRS, the SE also has solid birds
omgggg.... that tone is ridiculous
+henry diaz I call it the Philly Cheese Steak tone. Full of beef and cheese like any good meal :p
+JgHaverty YES!!
henry diaz am I the only one that think this tone sounds like from a box? tbh
Too much mids
To much mids to be so loud. When actually in the mix it's perfect because that fuses the guitar with the bass
Marks phrasing and chord voicings are just so goddamn impressive.
I will never get over this video. Mark is absolutely unbelievable!
The finish on that PRS is taking the piss out of my life
I literally can't stop watching this and how the news goes he plays like butter his wrist is just flowing like it's nothing
Thank you for existing, Mark.
Such expressive playing, man. Not robotic or stiff when playing technical.
Still IMO Periphery’s greatest song ever. They have many fantastic songs but I’ve always come back to this one, it has that rock n roll vibe but it’s still so incredibly complex.. and the guitar play is just fantastic throughout
It’s one of the greatest
Mark is such an amazing guitarist. Probably his best quality is that he's such a humble and down to earth dude
That guitar is the most beautiful thing Ive ever seen and that tone is the most beautiful thing Ive ever heard
This will be my homework for the next months. Mark awesome as usual in his songwriting and playing.
Mark always makes it look sooo easy!

Oh hey, Zack! Fancy seeing you here
@@Sunchaserofficial lmaoooo hey man!
what a fucking tone.
Holy shit
Literally a masterpiece of writing. So under rated
The top on that PRS is blowing my mind.
Just wow! This is amazing to watch! Thank you for this video & playthrough!
2:48 favorite part of the song. Sounds so dope!
+Manas Sharma I couldn't agree more. I absolutely love the rhythm guitar in that part!
it sounds completely boring compared to the openingriff
6 years and I still adore this riffs, so damn good
I have a whole new appreciation for this song now.
My first periphery song, to be true I'm just hooked up with the band and the guitarists, one of the best prog metal bands of all time 🤘❤
That guitar is a work of art. Very impressive sound, great song to boot.
I FINALLY CAN PLAY IT, WOOOO!!!!
JESUS. Sometimes I forget how good the guitar work on periphery records are. This album was sublime
Beautiful
Great playing, great tone, great hair, gorgeous guitar. Man has it all.
this private stock looks stunning
Great song, great player and beautiful guitar!
What clean right-hand technique! Awesome :D
+Quique Toloza Seriously. Love Mark's playing. I find that the picking is the most difficult part of the riffs he writes.
His picking movement gesture is itself singing the song.....i feel it man..
That tone is so warm and wet and huge. love it
That burst is ridiculously gorgeous
amazing playing. hats off
So smooth
That's some really tight playing
I don't see how this is an ad for musicstorelive, but cool vid.
He's demoing his sig
+Dante Kishishev It's more of an ad for his signature PRS
+Zaiyetz same thing
+Dante Kishishev Really tight indeed. Guess thats the pro level... i only see that in guitar playthroughs. In covers the least discrepant skill level is in drums, i think...
technique is so fluid and unique. really great.
very nice attack and punch, amazing player
Great playing,Mark! And that fretboard is blinding me...
Hands down my favorite current player.
Thats beyond beautiful….
This guy is so sick, and that tone is excellent. This song is a blast to play - one of the few Periphery sings I can manage. They're one of my favorite bands to listen to, but all the bizarre arrangements and time signatures never made sense to me as a player.
So many amazing riffs, they really need to make instrumental versions of their newer albums
Sure thing ! I love the instrumentals but the vocals are not my cup of tea.
I remember in an Andertons interview Misha was talking about their earlier stuff was mainly written as instrumentals and then the vocalist would just have to work around it and force some vocals o to the tracks
Mark's picking style is so weird, it looks like he's not even actually playing, just waving his hand over the strings lol
Yeah man, he’s SUPER clean with muting the other strings while he wants specific strings to ring out at certain times. As a guitarist, this is can be extremely hard to do at times
i love how busy this riff is
6years from this playthrough video and i still cant play this legendary riff :(
Insane man....insanely good.
One of the best riffs written.
never been a huge prifree liker but will listen more. how he doesn't have arthritis in his fingers i dont know. never seen anyone wizz around chord progressions like that
he puts almost no power when hes picking and it's beautiful
Except when he slams that low C like a boss
Jacob Butler yes its me lol
His picking is so efficient its like watching Wes Hauch play.
its me bruhhh
Redline RR he says he actually plays really hard. Like, to where every note is played sharp
That fretboard is so shiny, holy shit. One day, I'll buy Mraky's signature.
That riff is euphoric..oh God!
fuck. how can somebody build such a masterpiece..
0:39 you can see he's really holding his urge to headbang 😂
freakin stellar....
Trying to learn currently
Reminds me of Learning the way the news goes
Weird song to play at first because of tuning
Haaaa this is sick unique and fresh
this is
so good
so this song is basically a 4 minute solo with occasional chords (joke), how on earth do you even begin to remember what notes to play.
Segments, my brother, segments.
or just guess
Its actually pretty easy(I can't play it but) its the same amazing shit over and over
Just practice. Lol
From experience, while I was learning the 'main' riff (the one from the intro) it took me like 5 minutes to learn the fretting, but like 30 minutes just plugging away at the metronome just to get up to speed. All for 10 seconds of song. It takes a while lmao
@@ItsSauIGoodman easy? What a moron
The unique thing about Mark's playing is he often utilizes his thumb on the fretting hand and I don't know it's mesmerized me.
he's just muting the lowest string
I love the way peripherry guys make the use of pinky :))
Damn...his picking hand is so smooth it looks like ultra instinct
cool sound, the fcuk, mark plays so cleanly (y)
whoooo!!!
I can only imagine shopping for a guitar and he’s playing their playing these riffs
