Smooth Criminal was a tribute to Astaire, who died a month before MJ released his album "Bad". It was ON PURPOSE MJ used so much references to Fred, since it (also his autobiography in 1988) was dedicated to Fred Astaire. MJ was a HUGE fan of Band Wagon, he used certain elements of tje movie repeatedly in his art. If you know the movie you'll understand why.
I saw my first Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers movie - Top Hat. You also see them doing the moonwalk there. It was immediately obvious how MJ must have been inspired by the master
That dance piece Fred did with the lady in the red dress was everything and should STILL be talked about to this day. The choreographers with DEFINATELY on point. Boy do I wish to dance like that. They're even dancing better than artists and dancers today of our time and this was ling before I and my parents were born but it STILL hits today. This is more than art this is a masterpiece. A world of its own.
So, this is where Michael Jackson got the ideal for his smooth criminal video! This was very good, but Michael's was so much more magical! Liked both though!
Fred Astaire moved like the wind so effortlessly!!! His dances are masterpieces timeless classy sophisticated!!!!! I miss stars like Fred the enormous talent no ego brilliant stars of the early 20th century!!!!! I only watch oldies such impressive magical masterpieces!!!!! Hollywood was so intriguing back then we were in total awe of their enormous unbeatable talent & I miss those days!!!! RIP Fred Astaire
I'd never seen this before or had any idea it existed. It is a key moment in the evolution of dance from the old tap/ballet to the new style of dramatic posing interspersed with quick steps and spins. And there you have the master, Astaire, doing it at the highest level of excellence. This was an eye-opener for sure. He brought the art form full circle, from old school to new. Jackson's music was the perfect background. Well done.
HA! Never seen this one before! Not just a mash up at all! Beautiful...just beautiful... Yea I'm old. Grew up on Astaire's movies as a kid...THIS captured the actor and the dancer and the man...
MJ was a musical Genius Mike could do anything he was a masterpiece made by God!!! I miss him & his sweet voice his compassion & brilliance we will never see anyone like MJ again!!!! Sadly he was demonized by the media & public painted out to be some kind of monster but in reality he was a saint & angel sweet sweet guy!!!!RIP
Unbelievable that they can do this. Fred Astaire would have been boggled in his day and time that his works and talent would live on this way. He was always entertaining. Still is.
They were both AMAZING!!!! My 2 FAVORITE DANCERS!!! Luuuuv them both. U can't compare such GREAT DANCERS...... they r both a class act!!! But I must say... MJ has copied some of the concepts & choreography in Fred's Dance acts.....that's fine......I guess MJ was inspired by Fred. Wish they were still alive!!!
Me fascina el glamour de las mujeres, la arrogancia de los hombres, la elegancia de movimientos en sus coreografías, sin duda Michael Jackson fue un ser excepcional
Both men were great & talented performers Fred was a huge inspiration for Michael I wonder if Michael ever got the chance to tell Fred this before he died? And lets face facts Fred was one smooth criminal this song fits him perfectly.
MJ probably did tell Fred this. He said in an interview that he didn't realize how good his Motown 25 performance was until he got a phone call from Fred congratulating him.
Fred was well past his sell by date in this clip, but still magic. Watch him as a young man, unmatchable. Even the great Gene Kelly said he was just a hoofer compared to Fred.
Kelly was extremely polite. As one dance critic said, "If you consider Fred Astaire's debonair style to be perfection, of course Gene Kelly is going to fall short. But in ballet and other forms of dance, this idea of perfection is just a myth."
Holy Fucking Shit! Mind blown. Absolutely not what I expected when I saw the option to watch this. Stunned and amazed by the inspiration and creative bent that coalesced in this awesome thingamabob 'nuff said.
Fred was a pioneer and unmatched in style and smoothness Michael said he looked up to him and certainly incorporated a lot from his Smooth style and moves.

That seen is from The Band Wagon. Fred dances with Cyd Cherisse there. Fred really enjoyed Michael's dancing. You can see the influence there on Smooth Criminal probably my favorite Michael Jackson video.
This video is A tribute to Fred Astaire and proof that Michael Jackson studied the greats and became greater! I just wish the kids of this genre would have this work ethic. They don’t seem to be Studying anything but each other. Somebody needs to step up!

Cyd Charisse in red dress
@@elisa3553 Cyd Charisse was not only a great dancer in her own right, but she also had one of the most fantastic pair of legs you'll ever see.
Well said - truly amazing - the talent - the choreography and set to MJ's music - simply fantastic!!

Wonderful tribute to both Fred Astaire and Michael Jackson
So, this is where Michael Jackson got the ideal for his smooth criminal video! This was very good, but Michael's was so much more magical! Liked both though!
Leslie Caron and Cyd Charisse - legendary dancers!
Growing up on this myself it easy to see why Michael was so infatuated with the style of Fred Astaire.💃🕺
Fred is the teacher! The best of all time!
I definitely agree!❤

Jeez didnt even know that smooth criminal was an inspiration from this.. way ahead of time indeed.
Way ahead of it's time in when jackson lifted and copied this as his own. A complete con artist..
@@mrpussinboots4252 🤣🤣🤣🤣 get out of here Jackson is leagues ahead of Fred accept it he’s the king
@@ukculture9240 He was a master at plagiarism. Barely any of his moves he actually created. All he did was steal from the past greats.
From "The Band Wagon." Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse. 1953
Cyd Charisse was an absolute beauty.

Once Fred Astaire called Michael Jackson and told him ¨You are a very good dancer¨ MJ said: This was the best compliment I received.¨.
As a Fred Fan, I love that he was truly joyous when he called him.❤
Fred Astaire I loved him. Went to his dancing school. Michael was fantastic also. 👍

Michael was a genius 👍
Wow!!!! I know Fred was also a Legend. And Michael watched him, and got ideas from him. He studied him. But what a hugh Difference
Fred was before his time. So was Michael. I can see why admire his creativity

Fred Astaire i had no clue a white boy with that much soul and rhythm ever existed, this was an absolute pleasure to watch
Astaire the Father of Modern Dance, before Fosse etc. It's good to be the first.
Wow, it's perfection itself.
