  • In 1308 Pope Gregory IX enlists the Dominicans to root out and destroy a sect know as the Cathars which renounce all the rituals of the Catholicism in favor of simple spiritualism. This simple faith had great appeal to illiterate villagers who had little understanding of the Roman Catholic Church they belonged to. Thus begins the Inquisition.

You know if I had to watch people get burned, it almost seems a mercy to have the fire go quick. That would be so traumatic to watch or even listen to let alone have happen to you. I can't imagine, it's barbaric.

It's especially cruel. But public executions were fairly common fare in most European cities not too long ago in history. It's only really been a couple centuries that we've sworn the practice off as barbaric. You do have to wonder if early modern people might have just had stronger stomachs.

It’s mind boggling-to me-to know that we’re living in much gentler times. Until quite recently, life was often a short, brutal struggle…a lot more than a bit unpleasant. Public executions were the “norm” (“norm” being used as a demographic; we must all know that just bc something falls or fell within the “norm” that doesn’t mean the “norm” is/was okay or good. That’s still true in the current day) but burning or death by fire-at least before The Inquisition 26:20 was considered more extreme. I can only imagine that it must’ve been traumatic (to say the least) for most of those who witnessed such a thing.
I’ve read that when someone is burned at the stake they die from oxygen deprivation via paralyzed lungs before they would have died from burning. All very much excruciating, all deplorable and one has to be cautious when learning these facts. Since they are facts, though, people must be willing to see, to absorb-to acknowledge-the horror. One can’t dwell in it…but it must be looked at. It’s ugly and awful but people who refuse to learn from history-especially the ugly parts-are doomed to repeat that ugly cycle.
Apologies for the long comment and the dark “add on” info. Hope everyone stays safe and well. =)

To be honest, wgen did Jesus proclaim Rome was hos church? He did nit. The Roman Empire was going out and attaching belief in Jesus to it was a way of keeping the empire alive. Left Rome a long time ago. I bend a knee to God, no pope.

The Spanish inquisition and other such behaviors is the major reason I turned my back on Catholicism and any other organized religion. If this offends I dont care. Im only discussing me, my life and my opinion.😊

I wouldn't worry about the kind of person who would be offended by you saying the church history of torture is distasteful.
I'm sure they exist but most devout Catholics simply ignore this history. And less devout Catholics are quite aware of it and critical of "bad parts of church history.". It takes a special kind of zealot to openly defend these old practices. Those zealots are actually more common in certain branches of protestantism these days, then Catholicism. They'll never admit it, but Western secular society has managed to humble the church a bit. Thankfully.
One way that happened? People like yourself simply leaving - and in larger and larger numbers over decades. So we all owe you and your brethren a small word of thanks.

I completely understand why you would. I never had any trust in ANY church, signage-hone especially the Mosque popes, preachers etc. If there is or if there isn't a God nobody on this planet truthfully knows. All the different Bibles of different religions have been rewritten by man a thousand times over to serve themselves. What matters is that you do your best to be as good a person as you can to people and yourself; then get on with living.

Word of God does NOT change.
      Bragging from “the church”
continues. “We compiled the Bible”. However, they then kept it
Hidden, Forbidden and Replaced instead of Obeyed & Taught.
