- Dan Brown's book The Da Vinci Code may be a novel, but Brown claims that his book is based on research and that all the art, architecture and secret societies he describes are real.
It's a controversial claim because, if based in truth, The Da Vinci Code threatens to turn our view of history on its head. Millions of readers have been hooked, but what do historians think of the book and do its major claims stand up to scrutiny?
Has the truth about the Holy Grail been suppressed by the Catholic Church? Has the Grail been kept safe by powerful secret societies? And is the real truth about the Grail encoded into Leonardo's great painting of the Last Supper?
Tony Robinson sets out to discover the facts about the Holy Grail and cut through the thicket of mystery that surrounds the subject. Like many Grail hunters before him, has Dan Brown has been duped and could one of the most alluring elements of the modern Grail obsession be an elaborate hoax?
I’d watch Tony investigate and narrate a box of corn flakes. He has a great knack of managing a script and presenting brilliantly.

the history channel actually has investigated corn flakes! The series on businesses that built america includes Kellogs and Post cereals and the discovery of corn flakes. The history channel's people are great, but I agree, Tony would probably have made it even more interesting.

If you liked the Da Vinci Code, I cannot recommend enough Foucault's Pendulum by Eco. It precedes the Da Vinci code by some years, but explores very similar subjects; secret societies, ancient rituals and ceremony and esoterica. What is great about it is that it is more an exploration into the nature of conspiracy and the human ability to infer any number of connections between disparate data if they are told there are connections. It is also a very funny, satirical look on works such as the Da Vinci code and is packed with history. When Eco was asked about Dan Brown and his novels he said - "I invented him. He shares my characters' fascinations - the world conspiracy of Rosicrucians, Masons, and Jesuits. The role of the Knights Templar. The hermetic secret. The principle that everything is connected. I suspect Dan Brown might not even exist.". Highly recommend.

What I liked about Dan Brown’s books is they got people to really look at art and architecture
Beyond that, they are works of fiction and tell tale for enjoyable reading

I liked that it made me question the original high tale. I grew up in a cult I call vanilla ISIS, and it's beaten into you that the Bible is the honest truth, despite being written hundreds of years later and translated a dozen times, so it was refreshing to even think of a variation. Like anything there's 3 sides, with the correct one somewhere in the middle.

As with all of Tony's shows, this was far more interesting than The Da Vinci Code. Tony has such a great way that he communicates with his audiences. I prefer to watch his shows more than 99% of other presenters. What can I say? I am a fan.
Same. He's my go-to. But I do enjoy richard Hammond as well. Lolol. But yea, I absorb pretty much anything coming from Tony, where as, from others, when I read or even in school, my brain seems to refuse to take in information no matter how interested I am in the subjects 🤷♀️

Tony Robinson doesn't exist, he's played by an actor called Steven Nifty Slovach. "Tony Robinson" was the name of a made up stand up comedian who played the comedy store in the 1980's, Nifty Slovach in reality is woman, but had to have a sex change in 1985 when Dig!, the precursor to Time Team became popular.

Yes he is very engaging, though I think there are many others who are excellent - the historian David Starkey immediately comes to mind. My absolute favourite is the eclectic Jonathan Meades.
Once again, Tony Robinson did a wonderful job. It was as thorough as possible, without being overly academic. It was a quest to satisfy a mystery, and I believe he was successful.

I read "The DaVinci Code" as a fiction book and was very entertained. I had read Greek and Norse mythology when I was a teen and I didn't believe them to be true, but a glimpse into what some people in the past believed. Until proven, I consider this book to be a modern mythology but very entertaining, IMO.
I read the Bible as a fictional story. Found it to be entertaining. Just the account of the great flood. Do you realize the amount of water needed to cover every mountain on earth? Where did it come from? Where did it go? then we have 2 of every animal on earth from countries not ever herd of or known at the time. Not to mention it would be imposable to fit on such a small boat. To repopulate the world from just a few people? We would all have the same genes. All be suspectable to the same disease. All be the same color. Thats a few of the so many impossibilities.

And allways i find something oppened to interpretation or something that i didnt have linked. I want to say that bcz the 1st thing you should take in consideration about the bibble is to not take in consideration the literal read. This is a rule, and just by knowing the whole scope of the bible, we can fullfill the gaps by handling well the Literal part. Plus, would be needed a knowldge on history and geography and geopolitics to solve this part. Thats why your " read by the fictional way " cant be taken as true.. How could you be fair with it, if you have knowldge that surpass it ( science ). You, flooded by knowldge of mordern science, must be fair with the inspiration of the past and translate it... to put it in a fictional way. till that, even em having inferior explanations in face of science, still a solid question to solve.

The Knights Templar were taken down by Phillip of France, who not only owed them money he did not wish to pay back, but also wanted their own private fortune. The church excommunicated them and allowed their arrest, torture and execution, not because the charges against them were true, but because the Pope was afraid of Phillip. Their treasure was from fees, but many of them were younger sons who brought endowments to the order; similar to a woman’s family paying a dowry to the convent when she enters as a novitiate.
I agree and don’t forget the pope de jour was Phillip’s brother in law conveniently.

I actually just tried to see who the pope was at the time and a bit difficult to find. I recently hear that different search engines give different information!! And I believe it. Anyway I knew it was Clement and indeed it was Clement V. There was something or other about the prior pope having died suddenly and looks like it was timely for Philip's plan. I will tell you that I may have read it in The Bloodline of the Holy Grail by Laurence Gardiner. Now Holy Blood, Holy Grail was just amazing but The Bloodline of the Holy Grail, for me anyway, took it to another level, so I suspect that was where I read it. Though I am a voracious reader I could be wrong. There is no doubt in my mind that there is much more to this story than just poo pooing it away.@@loditx7706

This is one of my favourite documentaries. Tony Robinson tells the story in such a clear way, going through each of the arguments and dismantling them one by one. Makes absolutely fascinating viewing. Really enjoyed.
The trouble is he only gives you what some people want you to hear the templar Knights we're not destroyed only the French templars and not all were captured and tortured what Robinson tells you is half a story and by the way I'm a historian

This whole programme was incredibly salty, and just goes to show that there is nothing like professional jealousy. The Da Vinci Code has only ever been a fictional romp, and criticising a fictional story is just laughable. Dan Brown's wife (who did a lot of the research) was a keen gamer, and obviously had played Broken Sword, and Gabriel Knight 3, as these games are so similar - even down to the female sidekick. People hate the DVC book because it was so successful. Still, nice the TR can sup off the crumbs left by the book's legacy.

Makes it all the more hilarious going back to that one episode in season 1 where Baldrick debunks Percy’s holy relic by holding up his collection of counterfeit Jesus finger-bones.
When I hear his voice, I see Hugh Laurie in the trenches.
Keep in mind that Da Vinci lived 1500 years after the life of Jesus.
So even though he may have created a painting called the Last Supper, it can no way accurately depict what happened back then, nor can it accurately show what the people looked like.
Its not like Da Vinci was there in person and took a picture of Jesus with a camera.
In fact, everyone in Da Vinci's painting look like typical Europeans, when Jesus and his followers would have all had darker skin, like everyone from Middle East regions.
The bible isn't an eye witness account of Jesus, its all man made... the council of nicea saw to that...

That's because the caucasian's hijacked history, and the story it Jesus was based around Ceasar Borgias, who was a tyrant and villain, and went from place to place raping and pillaging all in his way.
Ceasar was the son of the 1st Pope, who apparently stole the true story or Jesus and replaced it with their own.

You should read a book called: The Case For Christ which was written by a, formerly atheist, reporter who set out to disprove the resurrection. At least you could get your facts straight
Actually that was a trend in European, and especially Italian, art at the time - it wasn't focusing on realism but rather to portray Jesus and the Jesus story with the cultural references of the time - to put a contemporary interpretation on it (contemporary for them back then). We still do this today in the arts eg. Shakespearean plays in modern dress etc. The goal is to make it more relatable in the modern context

If Dan Brown had settled for saying "yeah I made the whole story up, inspired by earlier novels and legends, but it's a cool story, right?", then I would have respected him and his work a lot more.
But as long as you treat it as entertainment fiction, it's a pretty good read.

He says something to that effect in the foreword. Starts off by saying this is a work of fiction, and then some other stuff about the material. I never got the impression he was selling this story as a documentary. But yeah, its a great read. Made me read some of his others which are pretty good, too. Loved lost symbol.
you can literally research everything he has written and find truth in a lot f his writings.
I spent three years in a Convent as a live in boarder in my teens, and was intent on becoming a novice, then a nun. That was, up until I went to spend the weekend of my 15th birthday with my father and baby (5 yo) brother. My parents had separated, hence I was put in boarding school. ('Young ladies don't need to be at home with two 'men' ) my dad had told me. I cried myself to sleep silently for weeks. While at home for my birthday, I was surprised to answer the knock at the door, to one of the priests from the Rectory near the Convent. 'Hello Megan, I've come to visit for tea with you and your family.'
I was more than shocked. I didn't even know how he discovered where I lived away from the Convent.
Afterward, he said goodbye to father and was leaving, then there was another surprise. 'Megan, would you walk me to the car?' Our home was on a huge street block, with a massive garden, and the street couldn't be seen from the house. We arrived at the car, and he got in. He started the engine, then.. 'Well I guess you'd better get a birthday kiss.' Surprise. Reluctantly, nervously, and hesitantly, I leaned down, presenting the side of my face. Suddenly he reached out, grabbed my face, turned it around, and put his tongue half way down my throat. 'See you back at school' he said, and happily drove off. It took me what seemed like forever, to stop sobbing and shaking and get up off the kerb. My future should have been as an actress. Once in the house, I cheerily said I was going to study, and went to my room, where I sobbed into my pillow for another half hour. That priest made my life a panic stricken hell until I left the Convent. He would wink, blow kisses, and give knowing smiles. My grades suffered. I though that if this was what I was in for in my future in a Convent, it wasn't going to happen, and I was almost counting days until I got away from there. Since then, every horrible thing I've learned about the history of the Catholic Church has tarnished my beliefs forever.

I'm not Catholic but many of my friends are and have never suffered and happy with their church. It's sad that your mentors were tormentors and you suffered. In fact the "true" religion tainted your faith. Better to be a non-conformist. Your faith should free you! I hope you find your way back and your trauma is lessened and leaves you. Love your life fully. True faith will reveal itself. You must be happy and free within it. It can happen. 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️
The problem is that right in the front of the book Dan Brown boldly states "Fact | All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate." The problem is that he tries to have it both ways and takes a motte-and-bailey approach: when people point out how wrong his book is as a matter of fact, he resorts to saying it's just a novel; but he's also the person who, asked on television "How much of this is based on reality in terms of things that actually occurred?", gives the answer "Absolutely all of it."
I guess that's like how my novel about Abraham Lincoln's trip with Henry VIII to the Great Pyramid at Giza in the seventieth century B.C. is "based on reality in terms of things that actually occurred": Abraham Lincoln really existed, Henry VIII was a real person, you can go see the Great Pyramid yourself, and there really was a 70th century B.C.-but I combine them into something that is extremely unlikely.
Depends where the novel starts. Frederick Forsytrh used a similar trick. So did Alfred Hitchcock. The 'its real' is already rhe novel and fictional.

My 25th grade grandfather helped build that church his name was Rognvald Kolssen earl of Orkney Island in Scotland in 1100s
He went on to pilgrimage with the Templars and wrote part of the Viking sagas...

Foucaults Pendulum by Umberto Eco. I’ve always referred to it as the thinking mans da vinci code. But written in ‘88. It’s actually there at the start in his box of books. Mainly about the Templars. Satirises the whole PS/grail thing as well. Other gems include comparing the Cabala tree to an automotive engine. Great book.
Wow ty for the info. I was hoping most of that reading list was nonfiction. Once a theory is postulated, it should be examined under the lens of truth only. Other theories can be introduced once all known truth is applied. If greater than 10% probability cannot be determined among over a dozen possibilities, or 30% among seven or less, or 60% among two, then the group can introduce other theories. Throwing down a 101 of a reading list including more than one fiction read to introduce a newb to a think tank is not real. It is likely this 'history communicator' took ALL their reading lists, including the advanced, and put them in one bin for dramatic effect. Also look for bias fallacy in nonfiction inspired directly by fiction. The author will 100% reference the fiction, so reading of the fiction is necessary, but always remember that it is full of pretty lies; lies you will not fall for. You must research every claim, listen to every detractor, give audience to absurdity. The truth is felt as much as it is sought.
I consider this book as one of my top three best , but the satyric side of the narrative,(jokes about templars obsessed writers), but at the end the very subtil feeling that i had was that the author disguised with humor the evanescent truth, by point of view, truth is relative....like if the thing was a big mockery and became door on the holy good and evil...

I went to Roslyn, it's a lovely place (there is a truly sweet cat). A Sinclair chatted to me and proudly showed off his ancestor and freemason garb. No one mentioned the grail, no one cared! It was just a really lovely local church and nice service to go to.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I never understood why people freaked out about it. It was just well done fiction. So well done, in fact, some people thought it was real! People actually were going to great lengths to "bebunk" it. Silly. He mixed fact and fiction which usually makes for the best stories.
Well Dan Brown himself insisted that all the historical elements are ostensibly correct. The name of the protagonist is even a play on the author's name of a book Dan Brown used as his main source (and then pretended on not knowing this book). Umberto Eco has a hilarious essay on this ridiculous saga.

You're quite right. The painting is just an artistic impression. Da Vinci is free to express his idea through the painting. I would readily believe it if he was there as a witness at the last supper. Sadly he was not. It's beyond me too, to draw anything from the painting. What we should look for is how the "canvass" was divided, how the grouping of elements is made to achieve balance in the division, the colors, shading, and contrast. etc. Besides all the subjects are caucasians, contrary to what we know now that is not what the people looked like back then in that particular place and time.
Exactly. Da Vinci lived approx. 1500 years after Christ. How would he know anything outside the NT Gospels from that distance in time? He may well have had his ideas and beliefs, and the painting might give us pointers as to what Da Vinci believed. But as for the factual likelihood of what he believed, well... that's another story ;-)

Okay, around the 21 minute mark, Tony says that in the mid-1980's something remarkable happened that re-sparked interest in the Holy Grail. Of course, it turns out that he's talking about the book "The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail," but I don't think I'm the only one who thought he was talking about Indiana Jones. I love hearing different theories on topics like this. Some of these "experts" are forgetting this is a fictional book centered around the interpretation of art and documents made much closer to our time that the time they depict.
What are the different "theories"? Everything in this documentary only considers the fantasies of Dan Brown. All the experts (with solid academic credentials) considered here debunk everyone of Dan Brown's fabrications. Tony does interview some deluded people, like the owner of the Scottish building, and several people who are clearly outright con artists, but no one considers these to be "experts".

If you read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," one of the first things they say in the book is that the evidence they have gathered cannot be dealt with by a historical or judicial method of evaluation, or any one of several types of investigation. So, the authors say that they use the "novelist's way on investigation" where you can take any single item of evidence and relate it to any other piece in any way you can think of.. In other words, you can make it up as you go. That in itself should be a loud enough alarm to realize that the book is basically put together out of speculations by the authors and that there is no valid historical research in it at all.
And, of course, don't forget that the Priory of Sion, which figures heavily in both "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" and "The Da Vinci Code" turned out to be the product of a French man in the mid-20 Century who concocted that whole story and manufactured "evidence" for it, just so he could claim that he himself, Pierre Plantard, was related to these historical figures!

You can find another docu on history of christianity and what is written in the death sea scrolls. I think the narrator/ investigator calls Micha or something. Church turned a lot of the real truth of the early Christians into their own narrative to fit a certain agenda especially the denigration of women which a lot of popes feared or hated.

Enjoyable. What happened to Mary magdelaine is an interesting line of enquiry, especially given what we know to be true about men and women.
To do this with British humour is the way to go, only British can do this, I love it, education with entertainment.
With fiction, an author can use elements of truth cleverly intertwined/disguised to entice the reader to find out more of how the bigger story pieces 'fit' together - teasing, calling out to curious minds. Artists too, are storytellers, just using a different voice of delivery. We all see what we want to see, even the skeptic. I think the only solution to finding the truth is by keeping an open mind.

Conspiracy theorists use the same technique and there's a reason that sub-educated countries believe them. This technique is also used by politicians today and have some success either because the average person has no curiosity or independent thought, or because they're poorly educated. The way to find the truth is to examine the statements made and then test the statements with the evidence. I guess you need to have a open mind for the evidence. if statements made are clearly shown to be wrong, than no openness of mind will make any difference. At at least two points Dan Brown claims tht statements he has made, historical events he has made up, and organizations he has made up, are real and Tony shows us they are not. Period

I swear, Tony Robinson is a world treasure! Only thing I would take issue with in this documentary is the statement that the Grail never existed. At the Last Supper, there had to be SOMETHING containing the wine, after all, unless they drank out of their hands.

@@cdfdesantis699 Unlikely there would be anything as grand as a "grail" to serve wine in. As you say, they most likely drank from the jug the wine came in. Probably had some inscription on it saying "discount 50% off". These people were poor. Doesn't make for a great mystery though. The Quest for the Holy Jug.

Interesting video but I don't understand why Tony didn't look into the old Welsh legend that the grail was a wooden cup with, I think, mysterious healing powers, owned by a family in North Wales. This looks like a bias against the country I live in - incidentally which had winged serpents with jewelled wings in the woods near where I live and where an old lady saw the skin of one in a farmhouse in the village.

@@Cynnas Come on. It's an Italian Renaissance painting. They're all white, they're in a totally anachronistic building, they have a tablecloth with individual wine glasses. John was the youngest of the apostles, and Greek philosophy, along with it's tradition of the beardless youth at the foot of his master, was super in-vogue. And look to Jesus' left: Phillip doesn't have a beard either, but no one's ever suggested he's a woman. And soft, feminine features were usually associated with virtue, while sterner, masculine ones were associated with moral failings. Look at Thomas amd Peter's faces. It's probably not a coincidence that the denier and the doubter have the most masculine faces. The most female face of the whole set-up is the study of Christ's face Da Vinci did to prepare for the fresco. It's so feminine it could be the Mona Lisa's twin, with not a chin whisker to be seen. In the final painting, Jesus' beard is badly dabbed on the bottom of his chin like a last-minute fix. Da Vinci might have done it beardless like his original drawing and the monks who hovered over his every move for 3 years maybe got upset so he changed it.

Time Team renewed my cynicism about much modern archaeology. Francis Pryor could find a ritual in any fragment. The geofiz guy was just about useless in every episode. "And as usual, we've got just three days to do it" -- so much for science being led by the facts. It was led by the program format...
