Never been confirmed, but ive been told by others its warn gear bearings - would need a rebuild of the gearbox, a reconditioned, or replacement box. On the positive side, the sound hasn't got any worse over 2 years on :-) ...
I had that noise, shortly after my center diff grenaded, I just put it all back together with new transfer gears a couple days ago. Runs great now, no noise.
@andru12qw Not 100%... but the clutch was changed and the problem is still there. Fairly certain that the problem is gearbox related. Ive been told its the input shaft bearing, so in summer I might get that changed or try fix a replacement box.
did u have the A/C on? i noticed this noise when I used to have the 08 impreza, only happens when the compressor is working. try again with the A/C off and see if it's still there
I still have the noise.. but on the positive side its not got any worse and nothing else seems to have 'broken'. Im 99% sure its at least one bearing inside the gearbox. I was quoted £300 last clutch change to recondition the gearbox, so I decided against it. From what ive read the 5 speed gearbox in the WRX is prone to this, unlike the much stronger 6 speed STi gearboxes.
I’ve heard this but I’ve also heard people saying that’s when they listened to people when they told them it was normal subie stuff that it wasn’t and their cars died
Cheers for that mate, but ive tried it with the alternator/pas + a/c belts off and its just the same - changed the clutch - just the same. Think ive narrowed it down to some bearing in the gearbox. Im going to try get it reconditioned next summer..
Same thing here in a 2001 outback. Changed clutch, transmission oil, diff oil. That noise has gotten louder and sort of plateaued. Pretty similar to yours. Does it also get insanely high pitched at high RPMs?
keep me updated if you dont mind. I just had a transmission shop listen and they couldnt even hear the sound. they thought my car was fine and said he couldnt hear anything that i should worry about.

Input shaft bearing inside the transmission. Cheap part but replacing it requires opening the transmission.
its a subaru.. the transmissions whine all the time.. drive between buildings and it'll sound like a supercharger.. its just how the AWD system is.

i have a 2005 legacy gt and i have the SAME problem.. Did you ever find out what was/is causing it?
mine did the same thing, a little bit higher pitched but very similar, I replaced all 4 bearings in my center diff and voila problem solved....
keep me updated if you dont mind. I just had a transmission shop listen and they couldnt even hear the sound. they thought my car was fine and said he couldnt hear anything that i should worry about.
i have a 99 legacy, no turbo.. same noise.. im thinking its the center diff in the transaxle... maybe a bearing or something
so in other words its going to be expensive for me.. that is if i have the same problem. thanks for your input.
i had a whine when accelerating kind of like this. output shaft bearing disintegrated.
@andru12qw I will do. It will probably be summer time when I take the box off again. Its not the easiest job in the world!
my liberty NA has the same noise, only when the pedel is touched too and in 4+5 about 90k/h onwards, foot off the pedel and its gone
got the same on mine mate, im running an sti engine with wrx box, full rebuild is £190 + parts at specialists near me PM me if you want details.
Just means ur gears are a bit worn
What kind of nonsense is this
Trying find out if anyone else has the same problem nonsense??
