  • Today I’m building this 1965 Pontiac GTO Hardtop “Craftsman Series” by AMT. It’s been built “Box Stock” with one minor exception. If you have been following my channel for a while you know that I don’t believe that a model kit should come without an engine and this kit is no exception to that belief.
So, I scoured the internet (Ebay) and was able to locate an engine for this kit. It’s a more modern Pontiac engine from a 1977 Trans Am I believe, but it works with a little modification here and there. So, click that play button and come along on this journey with me.
I hope that you enjoy watching this video as much as I did building the kit.

Thank You! I had this can just laying around for a little bit and decided to finally use it on something. I originally bought it for an old Mopar build that I have yet to get started on. The hardest part was figuring out what color the interior should be. I tossed it around thinking it should be one color, then changing my mind mid-stream and going a different direction.

Thanks! For some reason I couldn't decide the interior colors at first.

The inside tub on that hard top is from the convertible, AMT / Round2 did not have a inside hub for a hard top, AMT did not want to spend the money for a new tool. The kit still came out great. nice video.

Thank you, I am glad that you enjoyed the video. I didn't know that the tub was from the convertible. I guess that they figured it was close enough so why spend the money on making a new one. Maybe they figured that people wouldn't know about that...

Thanks! That paint was purchased for a different project but I thought that it would look great on this build. The paint laid down perfectly but as you may have seen in the video, the clear coat didn't at first. Thanks for watching!

I built this kit a while back. For what is there, a nice kit. Bummed there was no engine, but that can be remedied some day LOL! NICE!

Thank you. It really is a nice kit. It's a shame that it didn't come with an engine but at least they left the hood open so that one could be installed. However, as you can see in the video, I had to do some modifications to the chassis to fit it in. The lack of a firewall also doesn't look quite correct as well. I am going to revisit this kit in the future to build and install a firewall in it.

If you have any of the reissue GTO kits you can definitely put an engine in or just swap parts but the possibilities are endless, from the original kit I'm going to use the vinyl roof on a repop convertible so it'll have a totally different look because I have a creative spirit that just won't quit

Very nice brother and I'm with you it needs a engine ❤😊

Thank You! This kit definitely should have one from the factory complete with the firewall and radiator. It really is too nice if a kit to go without one. Even after getting an engine from a seller on Ebay, I still had to do some heavy modifications to the chassis to fit it in. Thanks for watching!

How did you make the hood open?

The hood comes molded open in this kit. Even if it hadn't, it could have been opened fairly easily using the back side of a #11 blade.
