I'd say nissan's fall wasn't the lack of hybrids but instead ruining their reputation with the cvt transmission problems. When you have a problematic design and can not fix it in the first few years you have to bail and go back to what works. Similar to when fords powershift DCT trans was bombing in the focus. Nissan stuck with it too long and it tarnished sales of their regular transmission models because people just through it was nissan in general.
That reputation made me hesitate when buying a 2014 rogue for my wife but after looking into it more it was due to lack of maintenance from owners by not changing the fluid. We just traded in that rouge with 175k miles and no issues for a 23 rouge with another CVT since it was great vehicle.
Tim, if reliability is continuing to drop among all of the truck manufactures, do you think that all the manufactures should start extending their warranties? 100K? !50K miles
The unions have essentially shot themselves in the foot at every automaker. They have demanded far to much compensation for the quality of their work and the average consumer/buyer can't afford to subsidize this. The FACT that vehicles are not selling is proof of this truth. They workers have priced themselves right out of a job.
Sure am glad I purchased a new 2nd generation 2021 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro employing that bulletproof naturally aspirated 3UR-FE 5.7 liter V-8 engine and reliable 6 speed Aisan transmission
We own a 2021 Nissan Rogue with their four cylinder motor and couldn't be happier with the way it handles and gas mileage. Why they went to the three cylinder motor over their tried and true four cylinder baffles me. I don't see a gain in MPG with what people are getting with this motor which is more complex and having reliability problems. Supposedly Nissan improved their CVT transmission and so far ours has worked flawlessly. Would we buy another Nissan Rogue, defiantly if it had the previous four cylinder motor and better yet if they'd made it with a hybrid option.
Hi Tim. I ve been following many of your talks on the tundra and i do I have a question. (apologies if you did mention it somewhere i ve missed it). Would you have any thoughts or info as to seeing the Platinum with trd off road and long bed (hybrid or not) in Canada as it now available in the US(rare but still...) The trims we have in Canada seems to follow US a year or two later but not always.... I currently owned a 2015 Limited and love it...but....i d love to see this platinum with Trd off road crew cab long box here....few years down the road maybe?
People get targeted when they refuse to listen to rationale and reason. When one side is so extreme, sometimes the only way to get rid of them is to be just as extreme in the opposite direction. Tavares was killing Stellantis and the Dodge and Jeep brand with his crazy ass pricing.
They took GM quality and put luxury vehicle prices on it. Of course it was going to result in no sales. Now they have the problem of lots filled with '23 and '24 models they'll have offset with discounts, or send off to auction.
@@peiguy1982 I would have thought you to be a smart guy. Didn't miss it, but not every truck Toyota sold was impacted. Just like not every truck from GM and Ford are impacted by their recalls. A transmission is just as important as the engine to function. GM and Ford have had issues with transmissions, among other things. GM and Ford for new models are replacing engines too.
There is a Tesla store near us, with a dozen Cyber Trucks on the lot and they are just sitting there. The Tesla is quoting Dec 2024 for delivery. I wonder what the Cyber truck deposit to actual order ratio is ? It can’t be good.

I think the CEO of Nissan is just using that as a poor excuse,,,,,, In 2023, the market share of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States was 9.1%, while traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles accounted for 84%:
Plug in hybrids such as Chrysler mini van and Dodge Hornet don't seem to be selling well here in western Pennsylvania where I live. My salesman told me they were forced to accept these vehicles even though people don't want them. I believe most folks that plug in their cars would just buy a BEV and hybrid buyers like non plug in ones they just drive and add gas when needed.
Good content. Always worth watching for the facts vice hyperbole. Or the idiots driving by a dealership claiming, "Ford's dying because the lots are full!". Also, no Rams on the CR lists because they have a requirement to have tested at least two models in the last year to make their list. I get it but doesn't really help the consumer.
Apparently one CT owner had issues at minus 2 celcius. I mean that's a joke. They should never remove resistant heat from EVs. Sure go with a heat pump, but also have resistance heat as a back up. Heat is never a problem with the 23 lightning, range and winter efficiency different story. Always lots of heat and heats fast.
According to Japanese internet, V35A-FTS so far has three different cylinder block (the actual bare block itself, not short block) variants 201712-:11410-79015 202001-:11410-79025 and finally 202111-:11410-79026 Toyota Tundra, Lexus LX and Sequoia all have this last variant. Toyota Land Cruiser 300 sold overseas including in Japan, which is most closely related to Lexus LX actually have the earlier variants and they do not have issues or recalls (same for Lexus LS). Land Cruiser 300 poduction started in March 2021 and they have the second batch. LX, Tundra all started production in November 2021 and after. I am not sure which ones Lexus GX have because GX engine have smaller turbo and less horsepower. Take this info what you will
Usually, the least worked and most babied vehicles rank highest in reliability. If you have a vehicle in that category like Toyota ranked below average, better stay away from it. People don't take into consideration usage and abuse in reliability ratings. A truck hauling golf clubs or picking up groceries will obviously on paper appear better then a truck living on a ranch or hauling max loads. Not saying Subaru or Toyota are bad vehicles but be honest the demographics of people buying these aint the same type of people working them hard. Reliability rankings never take this into consideration and usage is the largest factor in how long a vehicle will last and how often things wear out or break.
My wife has a model Y, we love it. I found myself wanting a cybertruck. I have a 2023 Tundra TRD Pro. I test drove the cybertruck this past weekend. I liked it. But its 12k more than the Tundra! That's nuts. It's just too expensive.
I will say for Nissan CEO sake, even Honda only had one hybrid and no plug in hybrids. Yes they should have seen it coming, but even Honda is just barely ahead of them.

Nissan sure gave its reasons for hating CVTs. Those “common” cvt issues are just not that common anymore. Nissan actually makes hybrids and E power in other markets so just bring it to the US. Pretty simple.
