@ The truck runs flawlessly. I don’t have a need to tow so it’s just a commuter, with that said, it’s quiet, has a nice ride and gets between. 25-30 mpg regularly. Came from a Tacoma so it’s so much more roomy and plush. A nice ride height allows for great road vision. No regrets so far. Only once flaw I have observed, the backup camera is NOT good at night. Totally useless. I typically get 600+ miles to a tank and it hardly uses DEF.

    Great video Tim.
Just a note about fuel economy and DEF usage. I had a ‘23 Sierra 1500 AT4 3.0 Duramax (LZ0). When towing, even a small increase in speed dramatically changes your diesel/DEF consumption. I’m up in Canada and I found the towing sweet spot with that truck / engine was between 100-105 km/h (~63mph). Towing between 3,500 - 5000 lbs at that speed, the mileage/DEF consumption was great. When I set the cruise at 110+km/h (~70+mph) the fuel/DEF consumption was alarming. As you state it absolutely drinks DEF, I actually ran my DEF tank empty once on a trip because I didn’t realize how fast it was hammering through it. That’s just how it is when towing…if you can back off the speed a bit, it makes a huge difference. Otherwise, crack open the wallet and get ready to pay.
I had to move on from the ‘23 Sierra, living in Northern Canada(Northwest Territories) with extended periods of extreme cold I had some problems my dealer/GM could not solve with the LZ0. Other than that, that truck engine combo was just excellent.
I have ‘24 2500 Sierra AT4X with the 6.6 now and it’s the same story with fuel/DEF usage. Keeping that truck below 70mph makes a huge difference when towing. I just did a 4,500 mile road trip, towing the whole way (4000lb enclosed), and when I cruised under 110km/h (70mph), the truck got great mileage and was easy on DEF. At some points when I just wanted to make some time up, it hammered through DEF and diesel. I knew it and I was ok with it.
Enjoy the channel and your videos Tim, keep up the good work.
    Dave

As I posted elsewhere, DEF usage is essentially correlated to fuel consumption. More fuel consumption = more DEF consumption. Put simply, if you double the fuel consumption of the engine, you will likely double DEF consumption as well.

I had a 2020 Silverado 1500 and currently have a 2022 Suburban with the 3.0 LM2 motor. Neither burned a drop of oil in 5,000 mile oil change. Also, the DEF usage was reasonable. This is an awesome motor.

    • @hochhaul
      @hochhaul 2 місяці тому +1

My 2024 hasnt burned any thus far. Most oil consumption issues were with the LM2 due to valve covers having bad internal welds that allowed oil to get sucked into the intake. That also caused many other rumored issues that get spread on the internet. The oil would foul glow plugs and ruin the emissions system. To make things worse, some dealers and guys doing their own oil changes were using Dexos oil for gas engines instead of DexosD oil meant for this engine. The gas engine oils have higher ash content that is terrible for catalyst and filter.

Based partly on your videos, we pulled the trigger on this engine in a 2023 Sierra SLT. This 3.0L diesel mated to the 10 speed tranny is a dream to drive. I’ve never noticed any issues with the Regen. Additionally, the oil changes are not an issue. I have it changed every 5000 miles at the dealership I purchased the truck at. Maybe I’m being conservative, as the oil percentage left indicator is usually still showing around 45 percent. DEF usage is very good when not towing. Lastly, GMC has done an excellent job soundproofing the cabin. My wife even commented when we first drove the truck off of the dealer lot how quiet and smooth riding the truck was. Thanks for your excellent videos and reviews of this powerplant. We are so happy with our truck!!

One of your better videos. The only omission/correction I would add relates to cold weather. As someone who lives 130 miles outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, I find that all diesels these days start just fine without being plugged in even down to -40, at which point plugging in helps. Block heaters do greatly reduce cold-start wear, however.
What will shut down a diesel in the winter is improper winterization of the fuel. If you fill up during the shoulder season and the station has not switched to the appropriate blend of No. 1 Diesel/No. 2 Diesel, it can catch you during a cold snap. Likewise, if you use the huge range many of these vehicles have and think you will fill up in balmy Washington state and save by not refilling until you get to Grand Prairie, you may find yourself at the side of the road. We have lows of 2 deg F coming up tomorrow, and I made sure to keep my vehicle's fuel tanks low so I can fill with the appropriate winter blend.

I don't have this particular engine but I do have a small diesel motorhome that requires DEF. I buy most off my DEF at truck pumps. Put the nozzle in the DEF tank fill opening and pull the handle just like a fuel pump. It will auto shut off just like a fuel pump. A lot simpler than the plastic jug and less packaging waste.

I'm on my second 3.0 truck and so far so good. My first was a 2020 GMC and I traded it in with around 45,000 miles without any issues. My current truck is a 2024 Chevrolet and I tossed around the idea of going with a 6.2 before buying another 3.0 but the fuel mileage difference along with using premium gas with the 6.2 is a no brainer..

Nearest Top Tier to me is about 1000 miles away. Recently started using Archoil AR6400-D diesel cleaner every 5000 miles. Small increase in mpg but a pretty healthy increase in miles between regens.

  • @BrianNC81

Very happy with our 2022 suburban LM2. No issues but only 24k miles. I think it regens about every 400 miles. I can tell when it is doing a regen by the exhaust sound and high idle when stopped. I buy the Walmart DEF for 8.88 and no issues. Use mobile 1 esp x2 DexosD oil from Walmart for oil changes. Hot shots EDT fuel additive to keep everything clean.
Also have a 3.0 inline 6 twin turbo diesel in my old bmw with 162k miles on it. Its a blast to drive with 364whp/595lb torque in a small 3 series (stage 2+ tune). Pulls a mid 12 second quarter mile at 111mph trap speed. Fun fact, the fastest 335d 3.0 diesel in the US is pushing over 1000whp with triple turbos and nitrous.

The question that comes up is whether people prefer comfort or reliability? Noise level comfort over reliability is a choice only few people make. There’s also issues like transmission leaks and wiring harness issues and parts availability issues. Because if the vehicle requires maintenance then it’s going away for a decent amount of time unfortunately. I really hope you make a video about these issues too.

Just picked up a '23 Silverado and love this motor! 30mpg most of the time without even trying. my old f-150 5 liter averaged 17. Solid power with a smooth 10spd tranny. I've owned a 6.6 duramax in my past and while a decent motor I'll take an inline cylinder config over a V any day.
Problem with putting a diesel into soccer mom rig SUV's is gas in the diesel tank.. so many people are going to do that!

13:48 It’s common in the oil and gas industry to live out of a truck, so the they often idle for days. Run into town for fuel and food, then back out to location. Wasn’t an issue back in the day with diesel trucks, but now there are a lot of issues with emissions systems. A lot of companies will now run gas 3/4 tons if they don’t haul much or often. Cheaper up front and lower fuel and maintenance costs. We aren’t shutting off trucks when it’s 115 outside or freezing. Just let the thing run so it’s comfortable when one catches a break. Not to mention laptops in the trucks that need to stay on 24/7

THANK YOU for saying regen is a non issue! I never understood everyones concern with it and did a lot of research before buying my 3.0 Duramax and still never understood it. I guess if you do a lot of short trip driving it could be an issue. But I live in the country and drive 45 min @75mph+ to town a few times a week. No idea when it's doing a regen, doesn't affect me. Unless you do mostly short 5-10 min drives it's nothing you ever need to even think about. If you do short drives all the time, that is bad for any engine. Even a gas vehicle needs longer drives to heat up and burn moisture and gas out of oil, get catalytic converter hot enough to burn off and not clog up. If you always drive short distances, that is where electric cars actually are superior!

I've been driving diesel pickups since 2000 and the best advice I got way back then was from a guy who had been driving Mercedes diesels since the early 70's. His advice was to always buy fuel from a station that is a name brand and that you know sells LOTS of diesel fuel so it isn't sitting in those tanks for any length of time. Knock on wood I've never had a fuel problem in all those years.

Very good advice. Where I live, aside from the truck stops, the highest volume diesel fuel retailer in town is a "regional" brand fuel station, but I also know where they source their diesel fuel--it all comes from the same refinery serving the national chain stations. Never had a fuel quality issue with them.

Smooth and runs on the highway in 10th gear and 1500 rpm’s at 73 mph. Engine should last over 1,000,000 miles and that cruising rpm’s. DEF and regeneration are NOT in issue. Without towing I think you will get 6,000++ miles before the truck needs DEF.

I like this video. I've been tossing around getting a GMC with the 3.0 diesel because I've heard such good things about it. All the other engines I really don't know. Fords with similar features are about $6,000 more. I like the look of the Ford F-150 Platinum better but the Sierra 1500 is a pretty nice looking truck. I'm not concerned about the wet belt. If the engine goes 200,000 miles and 15 years it's a good time to do a really thorough once-over anyway. This was a really great video and I definitely feel confident if I go with that engine. It would be my first diesel.

Much more lively than our previous gen Yukon with the 5.3. The 6.2 is nice, but lots of lifter issues noted. We are getting 25mpg lifetime mixed driving. Highway as high as 31. Around town 24-27mpg. Such a nice powertrain. I do use EDT additive at every fillup.. I figure it can’t hurt. I hope GM keeps making the 3.0. My next SUV will more likely be the z71 suburban Duramax. I would caution people to avoid 2019-21 trucks with 100k+ miles or negotiate price carefully. Those years tend to have more issues with timing chain wear. It's an expensive repair (approx 40 hours of labor). Some guys dont have the issue, others bought a used truck with 100k miles and eventually get the CEL code due to timing chain wear. Newer trucks with high mileage dont seem to have the issue, so they either changed the tensioner to put less stress on the chain or they improved the chain itself.

Had to use 93 octane. Now I average 22 MPG with 500 mile range. Diesel is $0.30- $0.40 cheaper than 93 octane in TX. I use 1 gal DEF per 800 miles. No big deal. I change oil at 5K and it’s down a quart. If I had to add a quart no big deal. I drive 50% off road, idle a lot with AC on in 90-105F heat. No issues through 12K miles. This truck gets me anywhere in any condition; mud, sand, snow, pivot tracks. Oil change is about $30 more than 6.2L. And I’ll trade it off before 200K!

Yes it picks up seamlessly after shutdown or long idling. Also a DTE for DEF would be nice. After pulling high drag enclosed trailer DEF DTE went to 125 miles while pulling then back to 1213 after no pulling it with a startup popup EVERY time until added 2 gallons. For that matter, a service menu BUILT in to nearly eliminate any need for scan tools.

You hit on the major question about the economics of owning a diesel vehicle. There is a WIDE disparity between diesel fuel and gasoline fuel costs by area. Where I live, diesel fuel is MUCH more expensive than gasoline currently, up to 40% more expensive than gasoline per gallon at some stations. The blows the fuel cost advantage of the diesel pickup out of the water compared to gasoline powered pickups, even though the gasoline pickups get lower fuel economy. Interestingly, diesel fuel is much more costly where I live because it is a farming area with very high diesel fuel demand for both farming and trucking.

Diesel near my home~ 60 cents/gal more than reg (87) gas. 50 miles away and different state near my workplace, diesel is up to 30 cents more than reg. Gas but the same price as reg near my home. My state has fairly high taxes on diesel vs gas. In my 25 years of diesel ownership, I’ve seen it 50 cents or so less than reg and $1.50 or more higher than gas. On the plus side, local stations don’t “usually” jack the price up every Thursday on diesel.
