  • Here my mom Liz & I chat about our differences in upbringing & how she ate as a child, versus my childhood diet and upbringing. It's interesting to look back and see the differences, and now see how we were influenced back then by either our parents, culture, advertising, health agencies or even school.
    This video is part of fun little new series called FOOD FOR THOUGHT. My mom Liz has made a lot of changes to her health, diet and lifestyle over the last year and she created a youtube channel here ‪@travelingcarnivores‬ to share her experiences. If you want to see more, please subscribe to her channel!

One day, I'd be fascinated to read about your woo-woo out-of-body-experience, but you've just entered the chattering stage that follows immediately after you release a video, and suddenly twenty strangers are talking to you, all at once. So I shall leave you to do the gracious hostess thing that you do so well. You have a good weekend too, Holly. 🙂

    Duck fat is also great for making popcorn! I'm glad we (as a society) are challenging the notion of "fats are bad" and being more meticulously critical of refined carbohydrates and inflammatory foods & ingredients. Great video and your mom is the coolest - hope you have more of these conversations with her!

      Brandon, thank you so much! I hope my mom sees your comment. And that is such a great idea to use duck fat in the popcorn. I am a huge fan of duck fat and use it when I make eggs. I totally agree with you about society finally waking up and challenging what we have been taught. I want to do more videos like this and also a video sharing more details on the history of our US dietary guides and recommendations. They are pretty eye-opening.

      Thank you for saying that. :) I was 16 or 17 at that time and teenagers can be insecure with things. I don't have any negative feelings towards that lady but we weren't close. I am lucky that with the exchange program, I got to live with three different families. I was much closer with another family. Thai people are super friendly. With her, I think she treated me the same way she treated her daughter. She was very comfortable with being that blunt with me.

      Thanks so much, Ellie! 💮I am so happy you stopped by. I want to catch up on your videos too. I am so shocked about how much bread was recommended as a health food. I think they started adding vitamins to it at that time, to market it that way (and I don't think it's changed since then). I'd prefer it if the U.S. health agencies would just tell us that they have no clue what is healthy, stop making recommendations and admit they've misled us. But, I don't think that will ever happen. :)

    I used to eat GARBAGE as a teenager. Poptarts, chocolate milk, cookies, brownies, ice cream, and candy, candy, candy. Bleh, I feel gross just thinking of it. Probably the healthiest thing I ate was curly fries.😂😂😂 Surprisingly I wasn't obese, but I certainly had other health problems.
    I live near a high school now where the kids can go off campus at lunchtime, so I see what they eat, and it's no better than what I ate twenty years ago. Donuts and boba tea and fries and vegan pizza.
    Then we wonder why teenagers all have acne and depression. It's no mystery! Garbage input, garbage results.
    Anyway, it was neat to spend time with your mom. Now you're a whole family of youtube celebrities!

      Thanks! You brought back so many memories with your list of junk food you ate - the pop-tarts especially. Those were a favorite back then! And, it is also true about teens and their acne and junk food. Although some people love dairy, I think it also is a big contributor to the teen acne issues... maybe from all the hormones in it.

    Great video! Growing up in the bush, breakfast for us was usually oatmeal with some sugar and fresh, raw full-fat cows milk too. Loads of meat for dinner though with vegetables harvested from the garden. It's great to see that your Mum has conducted her own research and altered her diet to be so much healthier in her later years - Go Mom! (and you also Holly).

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Рік тому +2

      Thank you for watching and for sharing some of your experiences, Rod! It's so interesting to hear about what people ate when growing up and how things have changed. For my mom, I never imagined she (or my brother) would be so into being healthy and making such a big change to their diets. It's awesome when people take charge of their health. I didn't talk much about this, but when I grew up we ate meals similar to what my mom described (meat and mashed potatoes and milk) up until I was 9 and my parents divorced and then things changed a lot. We're so in our own culture that it's hard to see how much we've normalized really unhealthy habits and foods (candy, soda, etc.) I think in the recent years people have become a lot more aware, and many people are taking charge of their health and majorly changing their diets. It's awesome to see it. I hope we can continue to hear other stories on UA-cam (I hope YT does not try to censor this stuff).

    Interesting reflections Holly. I recall reading about sugar, and the law of being able to advertize as sugar free if it contained x amount of sugar, something like half of a gram, per X amount, and came across this info re TICTACS, i weighed 1 one day, and it was like .99 g;s, - crazy!!

    It’s crazy how they’re allowed to market food like that...White bread has little nutritional value, but the claims on that poster!😲
    I guess it comes from growing up in difficult times but my mum was also brought up to “clean up her plate”…She never made my sister and me do that, because she really thinks it caused her to have personal food issues as a young adult.
    Has it improved today? Sadly junk food shops still rule the roost in our high streets.
    Funny about where we used to get 'sucker/lollipops from...probably the dentist as well 😂Your mum looks well…I can now see where you get your lovely smile from.

    • @LifeDIY
      @LifeDIY  Рік тому +2

      Thanks, Joe! Yeah I agree about white bread. I think back in the day they also started adding vitamins, so that may be part of why it was marketed as a health food. That's good your mom never made you and your sister clean your plate. I think my mom did make me do that as a kid, up until a certain age. Junk food is everywhere! And, thanks for the nice comment about my mom. :)

    I found this you Holly for microneedling but there are so many fun and insightful video here! Thank you for your contents! Im Korean living in Seoul, Korea, and What I notice about obesity is there is one more factor comes in. I haven't been to the US but what I see is culture there is so much car-centric, which make you lead very sedentary life style let alone working sitting for 8 or more hours. I think the cultrue there is meant to make people get more weight. and Maybe genetics and the other things too, Asian tend to be silm and small in tersm of body structure, where as White tend to be bigger. Anyway Thank you for your video!

    Holly, I really enjoyed your talk with your mother, I was born in the 70's and remember that decade with, margarine, engineered wheat and all those processed foods. Remember reading how Nixon in the 70's was trying to make food shortages a thing of the past and really issued in the junk food era with his policies on wheat. Omg, do any of you remember TV dinners? When the microwave came out how they changed to use that new appliance, how bad they were for you with a list of ingredients you couldn't even pronounce. Also do you remember Kool-aid, that little chemical/food coloring packet my mother would pour into a pitcher along with several cups of sugar and we were told it was good for us to drink. We grew up in an era of mass-produced candy. Growing up we had access to so many different types of candy and used to binge on it for a week straight after Halloween. My mother is no longer with us but I enjoyed your talk with your mom, please do more. Matt

      Thank you and I am sorry for my late reply! I will get back to you tomorrow. Regarding that Thai mom - it's ok. It wasn't that bad, just a memory now. I love Thailand - the people and culture (and food especially). I think Thai people are polite, and I also think if you know them well enough they can be quite blunt. I like that too. It reminds me of when you ask a kid for their advice or if you look ok and they say "No." Kids don't have a filter and just say what's on their mind. I feel like I experienced that a lot with my Thai friends and family there, once we knew each other well.

      @@LifeDIY Holly, no rush, take your time with your reply! I've been living in Thailand since 2016, and it's been an incredible experience. I had to return in 2020, but due to the pandemic and strict lockdowns here, I ended up staying longer. I then found another job, and I've been living here ever since. It's a unique and calming environment, quite laid-back, and I'm sure you're familiar with "Thai time." Initially, I was a bit frustrated with it, but now I find it interesting to embrace the casual and relaxed pace, although I promise I won't be late for our show! 😄 I absolutely love it here-the massages, aromatic Thai scents, Thai tea (Chakiew), and overall ambiance are wonderful. However, come January, I'll be heading to Scotland to conduct research on health nutrition as a data analyst.

      If someone is trying to lose weight, I think diet is most important (just my opinion) but I think adding in more and more activity will help also - and make them feel better.
      I hope the video vibe being different is a good thing as I want to make more videos like this! I had some technical issues, so I need to get better at using this software, but it was fun.
