Sephiroth isn't inherently nor innately evil. He was taken over by Jenova, a Lovecraftian level cosmic entity/parasite that devours planets. The parasite twisted Sephiroth's mind after his mental breakdown, and he believes its his mother, and that the Planet belongs to Jenova. So... he's a villain by circumstances, and in all honesty, is also a victim of it too.
I don’t think I’d be able to fight him off like Cloud did if he did that to me. I’m a small 5’4 woman with no fighting experience, and Sephiroth is a 6’5+ former soldier with years of combat experience. I’d be dead in seconds.

I believe "Edge of Creation" Sephiroth (who's at the end of the game) is going to be key to the resolution. I hugely believe he's a good guy, same as the good natured Sephiroth from Crisis Core (which explains the pronoun differences), and he's fighting to put an end to Jenova's madness.
Assuming EOC Sephiroth is from the future and has somehow achieved enlightenment, I get the feeling that he has good intentions and wants to accept Cloud as his equal, but knows Cloud has no reason to trust him and doesn’t know how to explain himself in a way that Cloud wouldn’t interpret as just more manipulation. You can see the genuine disappointment on his face after Cloud rebukes him, but then he’s just like, “Fine, I’ll play the role of villain for a while longer, let’s see how far you’ve come.”

Sephiroth intends to take Cloud's body as his own and in order to do that he must undo everything that makes Cloud who he is. Throughout the game Sephiroth uses Jenova to modify Clouds memories by making himself the center of attention "I am your everything". Sephiroth knows that the people around Cloud give him the strength to fight on, but the ones who really count are Tifa, Aerith and Zack. In the new trailer Sephiroth talks about how he killed Tifa, suggesting that the one Cloud is with isn't really Tifa, which will cause Cloud to isolate himself from Tifa and that could keep the truth she holds that would help Cloud find himself away. Sephiroth knows that Aerith's death will cause Cloud to regret and question everything about himself and through that regret eventually learn to cherish and protect those around him. Zack passes his legacy on to Cloud, giving him a reason to fight, to be a hero and to embrace his dreams. The buster sword is that symbol to remind Cloud what he fights for. Everything he's done so far to the timeline, altering the fates of Tifa, Aerith and Zack, is intended to undermine and undo Cloud's identity, his purpose. Outside of the merchant in the game Spelunky lol, Sephiroth is the single most terrifying antagonists in any game imo. His backstory is so tragic, and I think the fact that his backstory has me empathizing with him, it makes his descent into madness that much more heartbreaking, even gut-wrenching. I don't know much about his story outside of a few youtube videos, but I can literally FEEL his insanity in 15:34 when he's looking at Cloud, there is nothing left of his original character here. Every time he looks at someone he's just...gone. I hate it for him so bad but he is by far one of the most heart-stopping characters in any game in history, one of the greatest characters/character designs ever created imo.
I think one of the coolest aspects is the fact that he's dead the whole story. You unironically just chase his ghost through Jenova the whole game while the real him is still half dead in the northern crater. It's some metal gear type plot. Just to clear things up, it's still Sephiroth since he has control of Jenova, but it's cool that it's pretty much his spirit being manifested into her mimic ability instead of his physical body.

This is potentially a new timeline. Nothings 100% confirmed but it's looking that way. Cloud is referring to when he killed Sephiroth by stabbing him and throwing him into the lifestream back in the nibelheim mako reactor. It's happens during crisis core I think.
Id say defo a new timeline, with zack being alive (idk in this timeline or another) and with Sephiroth trying to keep all clouds friends away from him (leading him away from Aerith when first meeting her, then trying to kill barret) this Sephiroth could potentially be one from the original timeline.

Going by numora's interview when he was asked about sephs sexuality, he made it clear that sephiroth wasn't gay, he just never displays any sexual interest in anyone. Basically Asexual. In another roll, or perhaps just different directing, he'd probably sound fine. But not here. Long story short, Newbern MADE Sephiroth, Sephiroth, and anybody attempting to replace him, again IMO, ought to have a voice that's AT LEAST as naturally deep & full as Newbern, which the new guy doesn't have. Agree or disagree, Newbern can't be replaced as Sephiroth, he's too iconic.
Criticism stems from how he's used through the whole game, with constant showing and foreshadowing he's ultimate bad guy, a long time before the player knows anything about him, or has any reason to be concerned, or care from him. This criticism gains ground even more with the end, both in Shinra tower and final battle in the timey wimey space. Essentially, the presumption is you know almost everything about him as presup before playing the game, which isn't a friendly presup for new players, if the goal is to have new players enjoy the game

This is potentially a new timeline. Nothings 100% confirmed but it's looking that way. Cloud is referring to when he killed Sephiroth by stabbing him and throwing him into the lifestream back in the nibelheim mako reactor. It's happens during crisis core I think.

Id say defo a new timeline, with zack being alive (idk in this timeline or another) and with Sephiroth trying to keep all clouds friends away from him (leading him away from Aerith when first meeting her, then trying to kill barret) this Sephiroth could potentially be one from the original timeline.

He's only gay in the heads of yaoi fans, sephiroth haters and all their gay fanfiction/and art of him lol. Canonically there's nothing to back that up and I doubt there ever will be. Going by numora's interview when he was asked about sephs sexuality, he made it clear that sephiroth wasn't gay, he just never displays any sexual interest in anyone. Basically Asexual. He never answered about cloud though. I personally think Cloud might be bi because in the original ff7 honeybee inn scene, he gets in the bathtub with a bunch of gay dudes, and afterwards he ends up with one of the key items to dress up like a women.

I'm talking about the version of Sephiroth at the end of the game, who is CLEARLY stated as being different from all other versions of Sephiroth encountered. Japanese players pointed out how different he is, down to the differences in pronouns, and that in the JPN translation, there's much greater indication he from the Edge of Creation IS a different person.

It's such a shame that the VA was directed so poorly, Sephiroth's is the single worst performance in the EN dub. SE messed up dumping Newbern.
His voice is fantastic in remake, he’s calm crazy which is way more intimidating
@@SourceSpy91 I appreciate that you like the performance, that's a positive thing. Unfortunately for me, I physically cringe when I hear the new guy, he's trying so hard but it falls flat. In another roll, or perhaps just different directing, he'd probably sound fine. But not here.
Long story short, Newbern MADE Sephiroth, Sephiroth, and anybody attempting to replace him, again IMO, ought to have a voice that's AT LEAST as naturally deep & full as Newbern, which the new guy doesn't have.
Agree or disagree, Newbern can't be replaced as Sephiroth, he's too iconic.

Criticism stems from how he's used through the whole game, with constant showing and foreshadowing he's ultimate bad guy, a long time before the player knows anything about him, or has any reason to be concerned, or care from him. This criticism gains ground even more with the end, both in Shinra tower and final battle in the timey wimey space.
Essentially, the presumption is you know almost everything about him as presup before playing the game, which isn't a friendly presup for new players, if the goal is to have new players enjoy the game
