    We have to get a clearance in our class C airport, Then taxi to hold short line, attempt to call ground ( very busy and have to make sure you do not step on anyone) and prey that you are not stuck at the hold short line for to long. After cleared, you have to follow other planes on the taxiway. Then after your run-up you have to call ground again, listen for like 5 minutes to get in a call in edge wise, then they finally clear you to taxi and monitor tower. Then you have to wait another 10 or so minutes before you are cleared for take-off due to all of the landing and aircraft in front of you. Like 737 jets and so on. The whole process can take anywhere from 20 to 40 min. Ugg. Then when you are flying back into the airport, you have to call So-Cal approach and listen for like 5 minutes again to get the radio call in edge wise. Circle so that you do not enter the Charlie airspace until two way comm is established. Such a production getting in and out of John Wayne Airport - Class C.

    Great video. Shows how those pesky holes can start to line up on you. Vacuum pump making low suction, didn’t really think too much about it so caught off guard when the HSI was useless, led to being in a weird spot on base, plus the communication getting a little jumbled with approach trying to tell you about a helicopter while you were trying to correct your heading, plus miscommunication about landing vs option, plus gusty winds, just kind of made for a meh approach and landing.
    But you recognized it and got back ahead of it all, plugging the hole. Good demonstration of how to fight through those little fog-of-war type challenges when they all come together to make for a difficult couple of minutes. Because it happens to everyone and if you’re not prepared and engaged you can find yourself out of options.

    Reason for the hard start was most likely the mags being on both. Pipers with an ignition as such, the mags should be on left only due to the impulse coupler.

    1965 Cherokee 140 owner: FYI - my POH dictates that you start on the left magneto (pulse) once the engine settles (couple seconds) switch to both. I know I’m 7 months late to the party but I thought I’d share that. Those generic check lists are just that - generic. I know I commented once already, but this is such a great video because it demonstrates everything a PIC needs to be concerned with at once: controlling the aircraft, gusts, instrumentation, keeping vigilant on watching for air traffic, all while making radio calls! Just found this vid. I feel the same way about the seat on the warrior, Archer, Arrow. One position is a little too close, and one is a stretch to get full brake and defection on one side. I always make the call on how the winds are doing. Light winds, and a long flight... I'm back. If it's gusty, and I know I'm fighting a xwind on landing.... I'm up close. Interesting comment this pilot stated is he was going to take the PA28 for a littls spin. The truth is the PA28 is a very good spinning aircraft in fact I had to demonstartie spinning in a PA28 for my commercial flight test. The PA 28 is a very succesful aeroplane, which will stand a lot of hard work. It is quite a stable aircraft on instruments and of course as commened the PA 28 is a very good spinning aircraft. Of course do get some dual before you try it. The PA28 needs to be watched in recovery as its proned to stalling in spin recovering. One also need excellent dual training to bring the PA 28 out of a spin , but keep the aircraft inside the VNE limitations.

    • @FreePilotTraining
      @FreePilotTraining  Рік тому +1

      Funny thing, I didn’t believe you because if I lose an engine on takeoff below 1,000’ on takeoff, It’s typically very difficult to get back to the runway on a Cherokee. In a Cessna, I can make it at 300’ fairly regularly. This raises two good points. First, you have to capture best glide speed and not a landing speed if you want to glide for any distance, but also, the Cessna definitely climbs higher in a shorter distance so this obviously puts you closer to the runway in an engine out situation. After looking in the POH, I’m calculating 1:9.1 glide ratio on the Cessna and 1:99 in the Cherokee, but you are definitely right, once you slow below best glide, those Hershey bars drop like a rock. Anyway, thanks for the comment, and thanks for the tip on the DJI Osmo. I’m probably going to try one out!

      I actually really really like the fact that the airplane sinks like it does. It feels like I have more options if I need them. But it does mean I have to be much more careful to not exercise those options unintentionally.

    My GoPro Hero 10 stopped overheating when I took the battery out and just plugged it in. You need to buy a pass-through door so the cable stays plugged in. I have also seen people create makeshift sun shades out of paper, etc. to put between the camera and the sun, but I'm not sure if that works. Also, saw a review that said the Insta360 cameras don't have as much of a problem with heat because the battery is placed differently. I can't verify that myself as I only have GoPros. Great flight!

    Hopefully, you were not depressing the rudder pedals in a Piper Cherokee while the plane was not moving. In the Cherokee, the rudder pedals, the rudder, and the nose wheel are all connected. Pressing the rudder pedals while sitting still is a recipe for how to crack the rudder tubes under the panel.

      Also you are asking for a fire by pumping the throttle while starting a Piper. Don't do that. The primer plunger is not "Checking to see if it has gas in it". The primer plunger when pumped pushes fuel into 3 of the 4 cylinders. You should pump the primer 3-4 times before starting a cold engine. Oh and start a piper with a push start on the left mag only due to the impulse coupling.

    The camera I use (Feiyu Pocket 2S) doesn’t overheat. If you look at that, then you’ll have to have to be pretty confident of your audio mixing skills. The camera has no internal preamp and therefore cannot control line-in volume. I don’t know if GoPros let you control recording volume. Either way, you’ll have to clean up your audio feed before it hits the camera, or you’ll wind up with super hot crunchy audio like from my last upload. The intercom in that Piper is cranked up to 1000% or something, and when it’s baked in that hot, there’s no cooling it down in post. Audio aside, I like that camera a lot. Very versatile.
