And the gentlemen he bought it from who owned it for 27 years. He did a lot of work to it to keep it air-worthy and up-to-date through the years, not allowing an old plane to get ancient. Like putting anti-aging cream on it.
A Cherokee Six once hauled 7 of us (including pilot) and ALL our baggage from Skagway Alaska to Juneau to catch up to the ferry we missed when the train engine broke an axle on White Pass. That was in 1974. I could not believe that little plane could take off with that load but it did with power to spare- awesome plane...and pilot!
I'm amazed at how a 55-year-old updated plane is perfectly valid today, and Tom has been very kind to explain in great detail the upgrades he's made to his beautiful Cherokee. This channel is great, Bobby!
My first exposure to general aviation was in a Cherokee 235 when I was in my late 20's. It's probably why I got my pilot's license. Beautiful aircraft.
I’ve come back to watch this video multiple times. Tom’s dedication to keeping his aircraft pristine is second to none and his passion for it is evident. One of the nicest Cherokee’s in the world without a doubt. Keep flying and blue skies Tom.
I loved that interior. Most seem to skimp on the seat cushions, esp. from the factory. Back when that plane was relatively new, it was one we used to joke was a "dope smuggler's airplane." Thanks for the video. I especially like your belly-cam.
Beautiful restoration/improvements. That panel is immaculate. Found you on Sailing Doodles and really loving this channel too. Edit: I love your interviewing style keeping yourself out of it and let the subject do the talking. Looks like interviewing is something you are really good at too.
Its so refreshing to listen to a gentleman of his humble caliber who has such a wealth of knowledge and enthusiastically shares with the rest of us. Piper should hire him as an ambassador for the brand. Wonderfully relaxing voice and great video, loved the exterior camera angles.
Love this PA-29-235 and miss mine. Best airplane I ever owned and flew. This one is really special and very well kept and maintained. Been watching this airplane for years. A special pilot and man. Love that new glass panel. Thank you for sharing.
Love the plane, one of the best old planes I've seen, love the owner too he is so humble kept giving credit to whom it was due I'm perceiving he will be a very nice person to be around with, thank you so much
As a Texan, I was looking at the landscape off to the right, as he was about to take the active,....and I was thinking "that looks like Texas"....then he said "and you can see Ft. Worth over there"!! What a super mellow guy,...would be proud to call him a friend.
Beautiful! I love the 235. We had a 1969 235C in the red and white with a little bit of blue on the tail paint scheme. Unfortunately it was burned by terrorists in 1977 during the Rhodesian Bush War. It was the only time I saw my dad cry. He replaced it with a Beech V35A, which in turn won its place in history as the first and only V-tail Bonanza to be equipped with twin .303 Brownings in pods under the wings. At the end of the war my father had to return it to its civilian state. After my dad passed in 1990 it was sold to a South African gentleman, who took it to Florida when he emigrated from SA.
Tom, what a wonderful Cherokee! With most of my hours in a PA-28 160, doing 145kts is a dream! Love the paint, panel and all the upgrades. Another great video!
John, thanks for looking. I flew this airplane for a few years when my friend owned it. It was just your basic white/orange and brown 1964 Cherokee 235 and cruised at 128 KTS. Now with the compete package it is an honest 145 KTS Tom G
I flew one of these with a lot more payload than 1200 lbs. It handled very well. I've got many more hours in Cessna A/Cs but this is truly a well built and engineered aircraft and a lot of fun to fly.
Those are some really special airplanes he has there. And Tom seems to be a very nice and humble guy! It makes me very nostalgic to see those birds in the hangar. I took my ppl in a Tomahawk, and flew a lot of Cherokee after that. Thanks for a very interesting episode!
I keep watching this video at least once a month, just so I can watch this wonderful gentleman fly and talk about his beautiful Piper. I would ride with him anytime!!!
Nice cockpit upgrade. Amazing how much things have changed since the 80's when I was an avionics tech. Hey Bobby, anybody hiding a Skymaster in those hangars?
I miss the old Cherokee! Have a few hundred hours in the 4 cylinder model. Tom is certainly a seasoned veteran. Great gentleman and aviator! Keep flying Tom!
That Cherokee is a classic. What a sweet ride, thanks for taking us along. Tom's great and I love that he takes such pride in his plane. I'll bet he's the kind of pilot who could still fly "by the seat of his pants" as my dad says.
Thomas Grove Like my 185. Simple and reliable. Annuals are a breeze. I wonder how the current wing spar AD is going to affect this particular airplane?
Tom has two great aeroplanes and great taste! I love Cobras too - especially the earlier 289s. Nice guy he deserves it all, sounds like he's earned it👍😊😊
I owned a Cherokee 235 back 1998. We painted it, did the interior, and upgraded the avionics. What a great airplane! Our partner wanted to trade "up" and so we did, to a 1984 Saratoga fixed gear turbo. We should have kept the 235. I fly a Saratoga II HP now, and I need the extra space; but there is a special place in my heart for the 235.
Jubileum, Thanks for looking. The trim handle on the roof is a Piper original part on the 1964 Cherokee, on the back of the part is a casing number in the metal, when cross referenced I found it is a 1962 Rambler door window crank. I guess Piper got a good deal on them back then. TomG
What a great aircraft, and what a great flyer. People speak of "1964 airframe", but that aircraft has been updated and gone over by so many people, and so many new parts, that I wouldn't hesitate to go up in it, have a friend with an older aircraft, and people don't realize, so much of it has been replaced or redone that it is actually more late model, than older. Love the avionics systems he had done, which makes it fly like a new craft. Tom is a great example of the best of the aviation community.
@niceguy217 I agree. A lot of these older aircraft are actually safer now then they were when they came out of the factory, especially with all the new avionics, engine and airframe upgrades. Some people like this gentleman here really take good care of their aircraft, I am not surprised at all that he won with all the great work that he put into his beautiful Piper Cherokee 235.
Wow Wow Wow! I absolutely LOVE your Cherokee 235! That panel is so amazing. Your paint is beautiful too!!! I want to sell my 140 and get one of these!!!!!!
That’s a really slick Cherokee. A plane like that you can still find cheap enough to buy a nice one and dress up to make her your own. Well done 👍 Bobby
Really enjoyed that. Tom is such a cool gentleman. I could listen to him for hours. Love all your camera angles and glad I stuck around to the end for the bonus landing back at Eagles Nest. Great video Bobby!
Greatest GA aircraft of all time, imo. I’ve trained/flown in 152s, 172s, a Grumman yankee, others…but the Cherokee was, by far, my favorite. It’s just a *friendly* airplane in every imaginable way.
Three of us flew from Calgary Canada to Oshkosh in 2013 in a friends 235. I was worried about spending any time in the back seat seeing as I'm 6'1" but to my surprise it was more comfortable than the co-pilots seat. I would love to own this airplane.
What a superb aircraft, quality work throughout, it is good to see it still has the 'Coffee Grinder Trim Crank' I have not used one of those in a while. Regards from the U.K.
After checking the oil before every flight, you pick up on those things. Could you imagine if people treated their cars like we do airplanes? We'd all probably be broke but have some pristine cars lol

Such a kind peaceful gent. Long live Tom.
Don Johnston Was going to say the same thing! Kind of guy you would love to spend some time with.
My sentiments exactly, does this 235 have an autopilot?
I was just thinking 'what a nice man'.
Me too!
I've met bankers with that humble pie demeanor. Easy credit...... uh huh.
I love how he keeps commending his friends on the field and the previous owner. Very humble guy, super knowledgeable!
I like this old guy keeps your attention on the video and know's his stuff. I really like this plane
He is chip of the old school.
Olden age but young at heart cool dude
What a beautiful aircraft. Tom has done a great job of modifying this classic. Fun video !

Yeah. He's got a Shelby authenticated A.C. Cobra sitting in that hangar. Pretty sure he doesn't mind spending.
@@aaronbrown6266 He looks to be a Ford muscle car man too boot.
Looked like a nice car in the hangar. Was he friends with Caroll Shelby?
I want to be like Tom when I grow up.
This plane is absolutely beautiful, love the 235. I would love to have one just like that some day.
Me too!!
Tom is such a nice man and so gracious. Thanks to Tom and Bobby for a great episode and a look at a simply stunning aircraft. Safe skies !
I learned to fly on a 1960's PA 28-140. I didn't appreciate it at the time but Im now a huge fan of all PA 28's. Nice video.
