    I always loved that Meg was *not* preordained or special or the chosen one in any way (that her brother was the special one) and yet she proved to be the only thing that could figure out the puzzle of saving everyone. That celebration of human nature amid so much amazing spiritual fighting was pretty awesome. I also loved that the evil in this universe was lawfully aligned/controlling/ordered as opposed to chaotic, consuming, devouring. It really championed free-thinking. I hope the movie manages to do it justice!

    EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THE BOOK(S) FIRST. It doesn't have the ideology of "you're the only one who can stop it/save everyone" the ideology that Madeleine L'Engle portrays is, "there is evil everywhere, and it is vastly spreading and will affect everyone. We all have a part to play and strengths we can draw out of one another to stop it. You were unknowingly thrown into the middle of this situation, but will you be a part of stopping it? You have the strength, and we will all help each other along the way." It is a powerful book for children to read growing up and for adults to remember in day to day life. Growing up as a Christian, it became very apparent that the church was afraid to discuss science because they would then have to argue theories like the big bang and evolution (and they were vastly under-educated thus unable to do so). My dad comes from a biology background both in education and work, so science always fascinated me especially the study of the universe. It wasn't until I read a The Wrinkle in Time Series that I understood how science really does play a huge role in my faith, and how many of my beliefs became stronger because they were now backed in theory and fact rather than blind faith. I love Madeleine L'Engle and am so thankful that she wrote this perspective. I honestly don't believe that the movies will cover anything near the depth that she covered in the books, but this will probably be the best version that we will get outside of our own imagination, so I'm going to take it for what it is and enjoy it. Sorry, REALLY long post, but I hope people know that the book doesn't follow the typical Hollywood cliche of "the universe can only survive because of you, and only you can save everyone (basically narcissistic propaganda if you break it down)

      @alexcourson 6 років тому +3

      YES! I'm so excited for the movie to come out, but I'm a little nervous that they "glammed" it up and didn't hold true to the intrinsic humanity and spirituality that was so important in the plot development for the entire series. it went through Wrinkle, into Swiftly Tilting Planet and then beyond with Many Waters and Arm of the Starfish. If it doesn't keep in line with the message at the core, there definitely won't be any sequels... perhaps that's a good thing to stay in our imaginations...

    • @clairemonsor3849
      @clairemonsor3849 6 років тому +2

      eclectic tyrone I’m sorry that that is the message that is shown or that you have seen in this preview. You make a very good and solid point about the media’s portrayal of black men. I am a white woman so I can only empathize as to how that affects you in your day to day life and I’m very hurt for your behalf and I’m sorry that it does. I am not sure as to why Hollywood made these casting choices, in the book I don’t recall the author making a strong point as to the characters races. The only thing I remember as physical factors to describe the young girl is that she had crazy curly hair and poor eye sight which made her feel insecure. Like I said your point is completely valid and I’m sorry that I can’t provide an answer for that message that Hollywood is trying to push or not push.

      @felishte 6 років тому +27

      Zacharie Guillerey, how can you prevent it from being used? It's done for teenagers, it's consumed by teenages and it works for every gereneration of teenagers. Everyone of them want to be the chosen one so they will watch it and read it and so on.

    • @Cancoillotteman
      @Cancoillotteman 6 років тому +2

      Well it was sort of a joke, you know ? X) But more seriously, though it's done for teenagers it doesn't mean it has to be dumbed down. Some great movies targetting teenagers try not to overuse clichés, and I do think that they enjoy even more success than the others. Take V for vendetta, also targetting teenagers and broader audiences, the main caracter ain't even the one the movie's named after ! The main caracter isn't the super hero, it's just the normal girl trying to act and growing into a change figure for herself, no need of prophecy or "you're the only one that can help" crap !

    I read this story when I was 11 years old. I pick it out at a scholastic book fair at my school. It was my favourite novel; it spoke to me hope during a time of my life I didn't feel much of any. I don't care if it is translated word by word onto the big screen, somethings are better as books. What I care about is the spirit of the novel. It's the story of someone who doesn't really think highly of themselves but would still never give up because the love her family has for her and she has for them is everything. There is fear, curioisity, goodness, evil, the loss of individuality, hope and did I mention love. If it can capture those things it will be awesome.

    To all the people saying "oooh, people of different races are on screen how awful" this book was made in the 1950s as a take that to the conformity and racism of the time with a girl scientist as its protagonist and as her mother and Camazotz as a specific sign of the evils of everyone being the same. A movie that gives in to our ultra white politically correct "lets put maybe one black person on screen in the background but not do anything that might offend racists like imply biracial people exist" ideology would not be a good adaptation of the book. People being diverse is just reality, trying to pretend otherwise with mainly-white casts is a forced agenda, and one I'm damn tired of listening to.
    The book was wonderfully weird and poignant and beautiful and this trailer gives me hope for a faithful adaptation. Screw the racists. The beauty, importance, and strength of diversity in people was a key theme of the book and if you can't see that then don't let the door hit you on the way out.

    • @nomisunrider6472
      @nomisunrider6472 6 років тому +8

      Yeah and I'm sure that the demilitarization that got them that rank has nothing to do with the fact that they're an island in the middle of nowhere with no one likely to attack them. Clearly it's because they're all white and if we regularly commit enough violence against whatever arbitrary group we decide isn't human today then peace will be obtained.

    • @Dorianin1
      @Dorianin1 6 років тому +12

      How the hell does that look like a faithful adaptation? And no, I don't care about the skin colour of the actors'. I do care that they took a very strange, surreal book and made it another watered down version without a hint of originality.

    • @nomisunrider6472
      @nomisunrider6472 6 років тому +4

      I can understand that, but"warriors that serve the light" was a key part of the book. Like that scene where they go to the medium and mention all of Earth's warriors that fought the shadow, from Euclid to Jesus, and how Meg and the others must join them in fighting back using originality, creativity, love etc.. They've still got the weird dimensional shenanigans, strange worlds and creatures and characters, three witches who love costumes and theatrics. All of the trailers come off as very surreal and creative.

    • @Dorianin1
      @Dorianin1 6 років тому +6

      Yah, unfortunately, the political views of the author do not, in fact, affect the quality of the work. That's like saying Lord of the Rings was great because Tolkien was a devout catholic.

  • @hollyfae_art

    To everyone complaining about rehashing other material and cliche's etc... let's remember that the source material was written decades ago! Granted, Disney is looking for something "epic" with kid heroes to try to bring in the cash, now that Narnia is long gone (and they'll probably butcher the book because that's just what happens), but we can't expect anything really original until writers start writing something NEW! So to the studios, yes, give us new ideas! But to the story itself, let's remember it's been around for quite a while :)

It may actually be better than the old one that Disney made, which I heard wasn't really good. Hopefully the movie itself will be good, as the book was. Well that's debatable since the book is always better than the movie.

      I am not being pretentious. I love the book. I am in the middle of the second book in this series. That scene where Meg is explaining how a Tesseract works is not in the movie. It should have been in there. The effects were terrible. Mrs whatsit transforms into a flying cabbage like creature in the movie. In the book it is a flying centaur with wings which is on the cover of the book. Calvin has no personality or chemistry with Meg in the movie. The could have done better with Charles Wallace in this. There were people on UA-cam who said they never read the book and they hated this movie. They didn't explain why Charles trusts the three women in this. The Sci-fi show Farscape did Wormhole travel better than this movie did Wrinkle in Time space travel and that series was made from 1999 to 2003. I like Ava but this movie was too big for her to chew. She should go back to doing indie films.

      Also remember that Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey's character) was basically a bright light and a disembodied voice for the majority of the book, so. Let them make the Mrs. W's glamazons. Their appearance wasn't what made them good characters. Their characters made them good characters.

And even though the actors are great, they seem out of place. I mean I haven't read the book so I don't know much. it looks like her dad was missing, he's somewhere in another dimension, she was studying string theory? and she found a way to go find her dad. If going from 3d to 2d means flattening a body to something less, then adding another dimension would mean you would be able to be beyond your own body while being the same body of something more.

    • @edwardoyelade1177
      @edwardoyelade1177 6 років тому

      Don't think so, your body will probably remain the same though you'd be able to appear and disappear when moving into the added dimension (like in case of Mr. Square in Flatland by Abbott). The thing is you probably wont be able to sense it (the fifth dimension) as we are naturally 4-dimensional beings.

      The book is a classic and is loved by so many people (including myself). So as a movie produced by Disney, the expectations are quite high. But you can see in this trailer there are already some things that are annoying some people.
      1. It’s clichéd
      Since it is a classic movie, there are themes that seem “cliché” but it was before a time when certain things were overused. For example, in the book, Meg is the only one who can save her father. That wasn’t cliché back then, in the film’s defense. But over the years movies have used the same line “... the only one who can stop it” so it is really annoying to hear it again for a movie with such high expectations.
      2. The casting
      In the book, Meg has glasses, braces, and considers herself to be unattractive. Calvin is tall with red hair, freckles, and blue eyes. Charles Wallace is also very prevalent in the novel.
      In the movie, Meg stays true to the novel version for the most part, except the braces (Most people envisioned her as white, so seeing a poc play the main role leaves them confused even though there’s nothing wrong with it). Calvin looks very different, and Charles Wallace isn’t seen as much. As most novel-based movies, there are many things left out that the readers find important. So that begs the question, “what else has the movie left out?” Kind of disappointing. As for Mrs. Who, Mrs. Which and Mrs. Whatsit, they are portrayed as feeble old ladies, but they’re not so in the movie. Another inaccurate portrayal from the film.
      3. The unoriginality
      The trailer looks very similar to that of other fantasy trailers from the same studio. They did the same with Into the Woods; The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (AKA Chronicles of Narnia); Pan, The B.F.G.; and even Harry Potter, among countless other ones.
      Overall the movie looks as though it’s originality was taken away. The plot’s still there, but there’s no assurance that it’ll remain that way for the entire duration of the film. The trailer made the audience lose their trust. To some people, the movie just doesn’t do the book justice.

    • @Drkilljoy13
      @Drkilljoy13 6 років тому +3

      Actually, your entire conception of dimensions is what is "pretty wrong" the first three dimensions together represent your physical location; three spatial coordinates of X,Y, and Z. The Fourth dimension is time. This is because without time (change) you can only interpret things as a static image.
      So, all of us are 4D creatures, living in a 4D world. It's because we have stereoscopic vision that we perceive physical reality in 3 spacial dimensions.
      A dimension is not some other place, but rather simply a field of possible coordinates that can be used to delineate a location in spacetime.
