Outstanding review. Truly focused on driving experience.
Good review. Love the honesty.
Nice review. Thanks!
Need to get rid of that engine
Totally agree. Or drop price 10k for the 4-pots and give us some 6-cyl engine options.
@@danielerlandsson3965 There will be a Flat 6. The mass model must be a little 4 banger today because of the emission standards and on top now the WLTP Test which kills the Noise of the car also. More weight thanks to more filters in the exhaust. The time of good sounding cars is running out. Sad but true ...
Good to know. I wonder if Porsche was planning that from the beginning or if its the poor salesfigures?
Marc Nobel As far as I know that’s just in the US
@@danielerlandsson3965 The T Model and the GT Models with a Flat 6 was always in the plan. The poor Sales are going on for years in that sector of little Sportscars. All the brands have to deal with that.
You also can’t get that delightful short shift kit on the a regular MT Cayman or Boxster; it’s a very different feel with the standard setup, and to me, an important part of the T’s appeal. I don’t recall if I heard you mentioning it, but the seats are also an extra cost upgrade if you want o have them on a regular (or an S) Boxster or Cayman.
Nice video. With reference to the 'sound it makes' - I'd argue it's absolutely integral to the overall driving experience and so would have to score it down.
It's the best sounding VW Beetle, without air cooling
Is it just me or do you feel like Prosser will break out singing Cold Play's Yellow at any moment.
What about the new GTS? Have you tested that yet? It costs more but you get all the handling options pus the flat 6?
Great review. Sound matters, so what were Porsche thinking?! Profits, perhaps
Should have added one other mod to guarantee sales success and make it a veritble sports car icon like the 911; the delete 4cyl option for in-line 6 cyl motor.
So h9w much price difference between a T and a base with same kit?
I wonder if they'll ever bring the 6 back?
In the gt4 they will
Possibly the 718 Spyder as well.
GTS and GT4 already v6
My dream car !!
I am not sure if it is Autocar's video quality; but I think this 718 T sounds pretty good actually. I think if you wanted a new car with warranty you must be at least prepared to disregard how good they used to sound.
doesn't bother me at all, and I've owned 5 flat-6 Porsches; loved them all, and there's no issue as to which sounds better. But again, I quite enjoy this car's sound mated to a manual, and people acting like anything in flat-6 layout is the Second Coming need to stop kidding themselves. This motor cleans up vs. the last 2.7l base motor, and has nothing to be ashamed of vs. a 9A1 S or even GTS version, in terms of performance. The short shift setup in the T is an absolute delight to use, just like my 981 Spyder; in fact, I assume it's the same hardware.
Good review, enjoyed. Nice seeing a professional agreeing with all the points I made in my review of the base Boxster.
Forgot to mention that it has the 981 GT4 shifter?
As a current 2016 WRX owner, and a prospective Cayman owner, I’m divided on the sound and power. I’ve found the WRX to be plenty powerful for public roads, and the base Cayman has more power. However, I’d also love an upgrade to the sound if I’m going to be paying twice the price of my current turbo 4. This of course does not account for everything else the Porsche will do better than the Subaru.
I think it sounds pretty decent from inside actually.. It's not the sound that puts me off a 4 cylinder usually, it's the vibrations. But I guess with this being a boxer it's quite smooth? Sounds quite naturally aspirated subaru - an old fashioned thrum.. It's not the 4 cylinder bit that robs it of top end "specialness", it's the turbo bit. They could've got that 300bhp from a 2.5 4 cylinder... And I wonder if it would be any less efficient..
Not sure I could drive a yellow car but 718 looks amazing in yellow!
What engine is in the standard carrera? Does that sound good? Thought that was a turbo as well
911: 3L Flat 6 Turbo. (Cayman 2L Flat 4 Turbo)
So, it weighs more than a ford focus sedan??
Whats wrong with the exhaust 0:10?
3min in and I was already fed up with that sound.
slaWterCH
Hurt my ears.
good honest review. The noise is a deal breaker
I'm not okay with the 2l 4 cylinder!
It's a boxer engine
Flat 6 with blowers will happen soon.... I’d put money on it
It’s like a subaru sti engine in a lighter body tuned by the best in motorsport porsche what’s wrong with that?
Carlitox b I think the problem is the previous gen was possibly one the best sounding 6pot NA engines, especially for its price point! I personally would want a more pleasing sound for cost as it’s all part of the experience. It’s a gem of a engine tho just terrible sound
@@carlitoxb110 No doubt the engine is great, that is not the problem. As Lee said, the previous flat 6 was such an amazing engine, making a lovely N/A noise. When you buy a premium car, you don't want an 2l 4 cylinder engine that is literally found in almost all hot hatches ( golf r, s3, A45, and so on). A 6 cylinders is always smoother, and more classy, as well as sounding better and revving higher.
Oh so the Cayman T is for people who like driving. The rest of the Cayman variants must be for grannies
Most of them are driven by retired Gramps and nans so
k kk that’s the 911 especially the stupid targa models
@@doughnuts5364 No the 911 is for 50 year old mid life crisis man
It is the most precise Porsche vehicle to drive. I just ordered a Boxster T.
Dan Prosser number 1 !!
If I want a great enthusiastic drivers car, I get something N/A.
That's cool to know, bro.
Sadly becoming so rare with newer cars. I’d rather pick up a older 6pot GTS
100% agree. For the fun factor i don't want a turbo. Turbos are fine for everyday traffic and all that jazz, but that's it for me.
JohnnyNr5 👌🏼
-would you like to drink a cayman tea?
-yes, please.
Thanks for the video, Dan on point, always. Second time Autocar has spliced official Porsche AG footage of the exterior with Autocar-shot interior footage. We do notice, and it detracts.
It's normal and acceptable
Can't wait for these to sink like a rock on the second hand market so I can pick one up for cheap. I always love the red-headed step children.
They are selling for the same price 3 or 4 years old minues the options cost - I'd rather have a no option brand new one in the colour I want.
I’ve never driven a 4 pot Porker ... and have no desire to - give me a second hand 6 pot and money for fuel
Previous gen gts 😚👌
Had the pleasure of driving the previous gen then also the 718 2.0 & 2.5L they 718 is sooo much more switched on and direct, the extra torque really helps with day to day driving. But your 100 right..... 6pot NA FTW! Preferably a GTS!
Watch this space tho... iv heard a flat 6 with blowers could be on the cards... 😉
DevilGames wifey drives that one 2015 GTS and I love to borrow it. The best!
James you're not missing out on anything. The 2L is a glorified high quality VW Beetle. Laggy as hell.
nes suno laggy?! Really? in both the 2.0 & 2.5l there was little to no lag! Especially compared to the NA which you have to wind up
I think the 4 cylinder is great, the sound isn’t great but the car is so fun. I’d get the GTS though or the next GT4 when it’s out.
Said no sane person ever
I know it performs but £50k for a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder, nah
Cornwall1888 and only 300hp? Fucking hell. Get a £18000 audi s3
Hasan Ar-Rahman or pay the 10 more for the RS3 with that beautiful 5 cylinder
@@all-flat-engines but then you get a nose heavy understeerer.
Honestly, people who suggest a modfied golf over a mid engine low center of gravity, lighter weight, rwd sports car aren't driving enthusiasts.
Lol couldnt agree more, nicely put!
exactly - driving a flat 6 boxer is sweet - the noise the engine/compression braking - naturally aspirated - lovely - 4 banger 2.0 turbo = VW .....
Juiced up Audi TT, and about 10k more. bring back 2 more cylinders = sorted.
That’s an impressive machine, we love the styling.
This or an alpine?
Sounds like a Mondeo
Listen to one with an ipe exhaust and say that again
How does sound effect performance? hmmm?
Sound is still a very important factor for buyers and I’m included in that bunch. Not paying that much for a Prius sounding car when I can get a corvette with imo the best sounding v8.
I just hope more people will keep complaining about the engine so the rest of us can someday buy this amazing car for half its initial price.
If you love driving, get an Alpine A110 or a Lotus.
Rd Rg if you drive occasionally or on a track take the Lotus, if you want to drive it all the time take the Alpine.

soundofeighthooves sure, if you say so.
Porsche claim 4.7 for the standard Cayman and they tend to be conservative(5.1?), for £53000 you can get an S with another 50bhp? Know which I'd have if I could afford either.
Waiting for the GT4
I would brand the T cars as the naturally aspirated better value version of the Cayman/Boxter/Carrera. The 918 optional seats, lightweight glass, door pulls, lack of stereo, short throw shifter four-wheel steer (not sure if that's optional on the cayman as well as the carrera) and other exclusive options for the T cars are beautiful; The addition of a naturally aspirated motor, priced below the base/turbo model, would completely justify the lack of power, mitigate anyone's confusion of why they need to buy the T over the base, and make clear where these cars fit in with the rest of the family
But they are Turbo too.
4 Banger - huge mistake....
You learn drive round flat spots, it’s a minor thing, and as you said it’s got plenty power, loads of torque, and it sounds like what it is, a tuned 4 cylinder, the noise wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me, if you want a better sound?, go to an exhaust company, you might find out though that it would be more noisy at a cruise pace.
Peter Cavellini exhaust still doesn’t sound as good as a stock flat six cayman. The 718 is brilliant on the track, but I still prefer my older cayman and current cayman over this. Hopefully, the new gt4 corrects this
It's not a matter of noise. This engine sounds really rough and worst of all has substantial turbo lag
Aftastos K it doesn’t in the S - it’s a second quicker 0-60 than the old S
Why pay $77K for a flat-four? For the price of this flat-four turbo, I could pick up two Subaru STI flat-four turbo; one for commuting and one for track days!
Yes, for $77k you can buy a NA, V8 Lexus RCF. Admittedly is a grand tourer vs. a true sports car BUT the sound of the V8 is intoxicating compared to this thrashing 4 pot.
I could buy 7 used Fiesta but I won’t. You buy a Porsche 718 for the best handling mid engined sports car money can buy. It beats the old 981 in every criteria except sound. It handles better, is faster both 0-60 and on track, more usable power whenever you want it (you don’t have to wait until 5,500 revs before you have any torque! It looks better, has 911 brakes and suspension (in the S) oh and did I mention in quicker than a base 911. Don’t worry about the noise as you won’t hear it as you would be miles back down the road.
C'mon with that GT4 6-cil!
A good looking, fine handling car. But ever since they dropped that wonderful normally aspirated flat-6, I’ve lost a lot of interest in it. The Cayman with that flat-6 for many years was my favorite sports car on the market. The handling balance/price point combo together with that engine made it unbeatable IMHO. I would of chosen it over even a 911 back then.
Not anymore unfortunately. The new 911 on the over hand seems fantastic! They seemed to have nearly eliminated all turbo lag now, and the new interior design is great. The first 911 interior that I’ve actually liked. Going back to the Cayman/Boxster range, I’m doubtful of its future going forward, they’ve really lost that magic with the turbo 4 pot engine.
911 has lost its soul and grown fat
I've lost complete interest!
I couldn’t afford one...but if I could I’d be buying used for the 6 cylinder instead....yuck
runrabbitrunracing no one cares...lol.
It sounds like a Honda, and this is coming from someone with an S2000. I appreciate the engine noise in my S2000 because the Honda is so much less refined, however in a Porsche, I would expect different.

The Alpine is a much better prospect for the money. The engine note is, for me, 7/10th the experience - it’s what you have when you’re not blasting it along. I think I’d enjoy a quick go in this for the drive experience but that noise is a big no from me
bring the 6 cyl baackkk!!! NO TURBOS!
BMW M2 competition is the way to go
She’s gorgeous
I have a 2007 Cayman S and absolutely love it. Why did Porsche put a 4 cylinder engine in the new car? If anything the car could use little more power. Did a lot of Cayman drivers complain about the NA 6 cylinder?
Emission standards
@@nessuno5403 Emissions standards say a small sports car probably only used on the weekends has to have a 4 cylinder engine?
@@maxpowers3732 I know what you mean, it's rubbish. Emission standards say a small 4 cylinder will perform better in a lab test... and be inefficient when pushed. This world has gone mad :)
@@nessuno5403 Definitely! These are not high volume cars that get a lot of miles. They are designed to be fun to drive. I'm not going to buy a new one until it has a 6 cylinder.
You know the 4 pot is much quicker and more powerful right?!
718T or M2 comp for daily driver?
Hmm... Alpine A110.
@@nicksokolis6343 forgot to mention I'm US based, the A110 is not sold in the US
SKL Then it is a tough one. I like both. If the Cayman still had the H6 then it would be an easy choice.
Are these 718s the worst sounding sports cars on the market today?
Of course not, Alpine with Renault Megane 1.8T engine sounds worse!
empty carts make the most noise
It’s a better generation !
I'll buy a Cayman once it has a 6 cylinder
It's called a Cayman GT4
@@WhereBinB that was the previous generation Cayman, the 718 Cayman generation is just a 4 cylinder
@@vip_supercars3652 Understood, so you are buying the 718 GT4 when it launches then haha - It will be a long wait after the initial customers take them all and then start putting them back on the market for a huge markup. I have the 981 GT4 and that 6 cylinder example is plenty good enough for me
Dunno hey

@@blueberrycobbler I got 2 mins into this review and gave up on it, the sound of that engine. The previous gen 981 was it? That was the best Cayman yet, it had it all, looks and the sound. If i could afford a car like this i'd buy the BMW M2 comp no question.
@@stubailey9433 why watch it in the first place if you hate it so much 🤦🏼♂️ talk about stupidity.
The 4 cylinder makes the M2 comp an obvious decision for me, I know the Cayman is a sharper and more focussed tool but that M2 is just, well, so much fun!
Sharp and focused? Definitely not the 2L!
Flat 4?
You can keep it.
Coming from the Glorious sounding 2.7 Flat 6; how could they have made such a bad sounding engine? No wonder they're coming back to a Six Cylinder for the 718. (Besides the GT4-Spyder)
They are coming back to the 6 cylinder?
It sounds awesome as far as 4-cylinder engines go. If sound of the car is so important to you why didn't you get V8 AMG for the price and got fart sounding 2.7 flat instead? It's the same money as V8 C63S ! So, Why??? Why settled for farty V6 when you could have awesome V8????
Unless you don't care as much about sound, you just want feel good that you didn't upgrade to 718.
@@paulb7207 Paul, Obviously you' have no money to afford any of these cars. The fact that you use the word "farty V6" proves that even further. Boxsters never had V6 engines. You've never been in Porsche with a NA Flat-6 much less driven one. Thus, You aren't qualified to have an opinion on this topic. Do yourself a favor... get a job save up some cash and enjoy a nice car.
One reason is that you like a lightweight sports car and not a heavy muscle car. Also, the MB AMG only comes with an automatic, so it's not as much fun to drive.@@paulb7207
@@maxpowers3732 then why all the drama about the sound? ;-)

because of the purity - no radio or klima... Just you and the car...
Such pure, no radio, big lightness, much wow
Not sure if I can feel 25Kg difference; but Ive tried 718GTS and it was a hell alot of fun; it was even PDK although I like manuals; but it was lighting fast I couldnt complain
Blue 203 You wouldn’t unless you couldn’t afford the GTS. GTS is the same car with better brakes, cooler trim and real power. $65k for a 2.0 4 banger with 300 hp is a joke.
Cheaper and lighter

The alpine is an ugly, rear engine, under powered car made by the french, other than that it's so,so....

I would take the Alpine A110 over the 718 any second of any day. None of them have great sounding engines, judging by the videos we all watch, but at least the A110 is a light and VERY cool looking throwback to an amazing car, it sounds less crap than the Porsches, and is a lot more likable. ..and if i couldn't get a hold of an A110, i'd take the TTRS over the 718. It may not be as great a handler, but in everyday life you at least get a great engine.

Hello porsche 718 cayman T
Like majority of people, not having the glorious sound of the 6 cylinder engine is a big let down. But as it's a great drivers car, I would forgive it. Not sure about the power though.... a bit embarracing that a civic type R has more power than this Porsche. Overall I'd give it a 7/10
They made it 4 cylinder thinking everyone would get on board with their old racing car heritage & also because of the Asian markets... the Asian markets crashed & no one wanted an over £50k 4 cylinder sports car that sounded like a van. At the end of the day one of the most important parts of a sports car is the sound it makes. Anything with over 300hp - 350hp (oops it doesn't even have that) and relatively lightweight is quick enough for fun driving so after that it's all about dynamics and sound and if the sounds bad it doesn't matter how well the car drives you would still feel a little ashamed everytime you parked next to a 911 or an M car or an AMG or something with some balls about it.
It sounds like angry bees 🐝 trapped in a soda can
A fancy VW Beetle
the Cayman looks better than the new 911
Yugo they both are sexy

porsche should have stuck with a six turbo and still 2.0. people pay top dollar for porsche yet they want to cut cost with a 4. a 6, if its stroked the same as a 4 giving the same piston speed will behave just a like a 4 in both performance and fuel efficiency it is just that it would be more expensive to make...yet sound a lot better....someone in porsche needs to face a firing squad
Sorry but no. First of all bring back 6 cyl Porsche engines to Caymam/Boxster. Second of all T should stand for really basic car with no options to choose from beside paint. Everyting for much cheaper price than other versions of 718.
Cars will be electric anyway so even a 4 cylinder is something we should appreciate
lots and lots of people that love cars will never ever buy an electric car (me for example and all my family). It's just a totally different kind of machine. When buying a sports car, with my well earned money, i'm looking for a sound, an engine, an experience, a chasis and a mechanical simphony that has his own soul. That's why petrol cars will never die. No matter new laws, electric future...what it matters is what custumers are ready to pay for, and real petrol heads will always be PETROL heads. Electrics cars can be used for who wants to use them for everyday use, and they also contaminate with nuclear residues and in many other ways. If they want to stop contamination, killing the best engines and sports cars is really not the way! They can start by looking at hevy industry that really really contaminates. And planes? They don't contaminate with the kerosene? Why they don't also stop them? We are where we are thanks to internal combustion engine...and now they wanna kill it? yeah wright. That's the same that 'using' the people to work all life, then when they are old and useless to work, you don't give them medicines because they cost money and you just let them die...and you replace them with new and young people, or maybe electric robots...
There is place for everything, it's not the way to be so radical, it will never work to impose stupid laws.
@@albertmarin2501 I agree I love the cars of today but there are always more restrictive regulations, now they want to get rid of diesels maybe in the near future they will ban combustion engines all together from cars.
@@purplefabian In China, Russia, , etc. nobody gives a damn. VW group will be still selling non-electric cars in countries that value economic growth. Once the West notices the threat we will get back our engines, don't you worry.
