I’ve been a fan of Porsche since my early years. What really got me purchasing the Boxster over 911 was a statement I read somewhere “Boxster/cayman is a platform Porsche wants to make. 911 is a platform Porsche have to make”
Oh last lines damn!
What a comment 😮❤!!!
Jay Leno said something similar…..if Porsche had the chance to start over with the 911, it would be mid engine.
@@foxlake6750 yep. The GT3 911s (the race ones, not the road versions) are mid-engined. Also they have some other 718 features like flatter headlights.
Great review! I love my 718 , my weekend drives couldn’t be any more fun! 911 is still an icon but getting too big and overly bloated in size and price. Save the money and enjoy the true drivers car!
Nice I thought about buying a boxster
It’s still my dream car but one day
Same. My 2021 718 base cayman is a real driver
Yup! Got the Cayman T and a stage 2 with downpipe Kline innovation and cat sport 200 cells. Sound so good and now 384 horsepower. It s a no brainer choice, 718 all day every day!
@@skyhawkheavy7524 What about snap over steer? Did they fix it?
the force is strong with you Thomas. Greetings from México.
My favourite car reviewer, so in depth, I love all his reviews, a real cool guy.
👌👌
I got my GLC43 Merc 2017 because of his review. And now second time GLC43 2020. Looking at 992 now.
"Or, maybe you want to annoy your neighbors", "every lane change is pure fun", "wake me up, what's going on". Thomas is the best. I just love watching his reviews. His humor, candor, and enthusiasm are spot-on. And as a 718 owner for the last year, I can thoroughly attest to the description of the car Thomas uses most: "Wow".
👌🤗

I've always enjoyed how you two guys have always had a chill style in content, dialogue and video editing - your videos are both informative and relaxing. And this one at 56 plus minutes - fantastic.
thanks so much, keep recommending :)
flawless review. both models look STUNNING and ICONIC in their own way. keep it up Thomas. the force is still in you
718 is my choice. Keep 19in wheels and it is a GT car. Wind control of the Boxster is better too. Very quiet cockpit. Love both though the 911 is bigger than I need.
First and foremost, your reviews are brilliant Thomas! Love the enthusiasm. :) Apologies if this was mentioned but the T has Sport Chrono as standard. It's essentially a GTS with a 2.0, IMHO. Keep up the great work!!!!
Thomas this review is awesome. I’ve been waiting for that comparison. Nice to see the side by side. Keep up the good work!
👌👌
Thank you Autogefühl for shooting in 60fps. Adds so much clarity to the videos and really sets your content well above other UA-cam auto content.

@@autogefuehl Will do!
Wow! Well done, Thomas. That was a brave verdict. Objectively speaking, I'd go with the 718 as well. I'd also recommend getting a 981 series car used. 90% of the technology but with the normally aspirated flat-6. Both are great generations of the same concept. The 911 is of course the most iconic, but at an incredibly high premium nowadays. Unfortunately, Porsche has decided to take the 911 into the Aston Martin direction in terms of prestige over accessibility to the "average" buyer.
I think you summed it up best when you said that you'd take 2 of the boxsters instead of the one 911 based on price. Of course, as a Cayman 981 owner, my comments are a little biased. ; ) Keep up the great work!
I’m down with you, 981 Spyder here. Not only is it a head turner, but guys actually compliment the car when I’m getting in or out when parking. I loved my 987 S as well, 144,000 miles of smiles on that one.
@@clu4u Wow! 981 Spyder! I missed out on a Speed Yellow 981 Spyder but have a 981 GTS. I'm sorry to say the 718 is not a patch on the 981. I had one as a courtesy car from my OPC and couldn't wait to bring it back. It sounded asthmatic and even worse the faster you go. I would have hated myself if I got one. The 981 GTS.... Awesome! Even the 911, the best ones are upto the 991 Gen 1, not after. Drove a 2022 911 on Saturday and was very underwhelmed, my pal who owned it could not believe the sound and the way my GTS drove. I had to pry my keys of the guy! 🙂
I agree that it was brave of Thomas. I also agree with the verdict, objectively speaking, even though I dislike the 2L 718 (I could live with the 2.5 if I had to). Best bang for the buck is certainly the 981 S. IMO, the premium for the 981 GTS is too much, but great car. However, for me, I think the 911 991.1 S/4S is the best bang for the buck 911, and is my personal preference. Still modern, yet classic, still relevant. 981 still modern and relevant, too, IMO. I do like the 992, but I agree that its price premium is hard to justify versus the 718, especially vs the 4L variants. Nonetheless, when compared with cars for the same money, the 992 range still represents good value for money.
Phenominal video in 1080p 60fps.
Please keep filiming in this resolution and frames per second it looks so crisp on my 1080p phone screen its unreal.
Also please keep doing these really meaningful and comprehensive videos like this.
I always watch the ads regardless and thumbs up the video.
My favourite car channel on all of youtube for sure, you guys are very professional. 2 drivers and a separate cameraman it seems all with multiple cockpit cameras.
Watching from London, thanks again.
thanks Ryan!!
Thomas, e
Even as an owner of a 911. I totally agree with you. I won't be replacing my 911 with another 911. I have to say it will be a Cayman GTS. It is just so much more fun to drive.
Seth Branam@ +1. .. Agreed. .. The last of the 6cly Cayman's, say model S or GTS,, is this 911 Carrera S (993) owners way forward. .. Mein Frau's early Boxster S showed the way. .. A mid-decade Cayman GTS all the way. . . .Make mine silver metallic over Full leather black. .. I'm taking the 993 for a neighborhood spin right now - nothing finer. Cranking up the Stones Jumping Jack Flash tune on the 993's very stealth Dynaudio/P99RS stereo.... Uber stealth the Dyn's are . . .
I replaced a 991 Carrera s with a 718 cayman GTS for those reasons exactly
Tim Salthouse did the exhaust note feature into your decision? Does the sound of the 718 gts engine bother you at all?
Tim ,
That’s fantastic. I will be doing the same with my 991.2 Carrera S also.
nlaul if it does, get the GT4 ;)
Great review Thomas. I bought my 718 Boxster S after watching your review last year. One year later, I love the car so much. It's really fun to drive with great handling. I always have a big smile every time I'm driving it.
Cool man :)
When I bought my Cayman S, I was sold the second I started the car and continue to enjoy every moment behind the wheel!
2019 Boxster S and love it. Great daily 9 months of the the NC year
The 2.5L in the S is a vastly superior power unit vs the 2L.
Great review of both cars well done!
Great in depth review. Thank you!
I was looking forward to a video comparison of those two models for quite a while. Well done, Autogefühl-Team!
good to hear from you, all the best =)
I prefer the minimalist, smaller, lighter and less complicated 718. 911s have become bloated and overengineered.
Same
Cool review comparing both models, excellent Thomas👍
Great review. I always liked the idea of the boxster but was just too slow for me. I have been driving my 911 4s for the last 6 years and have loved it! When the new 718 came out it sealed the deal for me. I ended up with a 718 bs, performance runs rings around my older4s and its just so good everywhere in all mods and all conditions. Totally agree with you and look fwd to taking it out every chance l get. Keep up the good work.
Cheers and enjoy =)
Really good review comparison!
Excellent review as always Thomas. I am actually getting the GTS - delivery in October, can’t wait 😊
enjoy=)
MBN
Awesome, such detail, much better than the typical commentary. I really got a feel of how it was to live with them. Thank you
Great reviews as usual. I’d go for the boxter and have some real fun for a lot less money.
Well done👍 great comparison
That LAVA ORANGE, I'm in love. I have never seen it in person though, from the videos it looks just stunning in the sun.
Nice, comprehensive and attention to detail, going beyond just driving. Thank you.
👌
Hats off to your bold and honest comment going with the 718 over the “ICON” 911! Great video, thank you!
🙏🙏 feel free to share 😎
Thomas; your conclusion is the same as mine. Recently replaced a pristine 993 Cab. with a 718 Boxster GTS.
What an amazing car. It's capabilities far outshine my own. (And I'm NOT afraid to put miles on it.)
👌👌
Great evaluation, thanks for the video! Price difference is huge!
Another excellent video with my hero 😁
Great review as always. I am in the market for a used Porsche in the USA, and this comparison you did really helps. Thank you!
Cheers m8!
Original 911--ignition key left of the steering column so that drivers could jump into the cockpit and start the car instantly while doing so. Modern 911--wait 10 seconds for the infotainment system to boot. What irony.
Great review, demonstrating that the 718 is now the real Porsche, staying more true to the philosophy of a lighter, nimbler sports car.
Great video as always T👍😎
Nice video Thomas - like always! Think a more suitable comparison today would be Cayman/Boxster GTS 4.0 against Carrera 911 base model ! Ansonsten weiter so !
You did it very complete job of an unbiased review of these two cars. All the content was needed and the video flowed very well for being almost an hour long. Wonderful job! I'm a 911 guy but have recently purchased an 981 Cayman for all of the same reasons you outlined in your comparison. The price to value component is clearly in favor of the Boxster/Cayman platform. In America, the 911 has become just too snobbish for my liking... Great job!
A Great Professional Review, really enjoyed it, you must be the best in the Business.
Great review as always, I have no issues with my 981 GTS so it is here to stay. Which ever you get, 981, 718, 911 you will have a blast.
What a complete comprehensive and detailed review! Great content!
Appreciated!
Best car review video on youtube yet . both are my all time favorite car models 😍
Thanks 🙏 please share 😎
Great video, very useful and fun to watch. Gonna buy a 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 manual 😎.
Thomas - great review. Thank you.
Excellent and honest in depth review, makes me feel like I already own these cars.
Excellent comparison, great video as always
thanks, please subscribe to both of our channels if you haven't done so far =)
Fantastic review, so comprehensive. I was close to buying an F-Type this year, but now moving toward a 718. This review was really fantastic.
Did you get one?
Haha funny i boufht both. A 981 boxster s and ab f type v6 s convertible
Which one do you like more?
Patiently awaiting that Rolls Cullinan review! You’re the only guy for that job!
I admire your work , you mention so many details at every video. I really love love love your work. One question , wich you choose between Cayman and Boxster? With PDK or manual? Basic model , or with turbo charging? For sure it will be at Miami Blue and with full alcandara at the interior. Greetings from sunny Greece.
The force is strong with you!
Both are real porsches. I have the 981 Boxster S. It sounds amazing. It is a fun car to drive. Driven the 992 carrera. It is sooo fast. Nothing is more fun than a mid engine car. 😉
@Joe H I payed 55k$ for it here in Sweden. 3000kilometers. It has SportChrono Plus package, Porsche Sport Exhaust, Pasm, Pdls, Padm. That's the price for a well equipt 981 S.
Excellent review! Really appreciate this... helped convince me to get the GT4 Spyder rather than the 911 S Cabrio.
Thanks, keep tuning in :)
Btw I would take the T or the GTS, so much easier with the automatic soft top!
The GTS gains the more instant low end punch, better for realistic daily driving country roads or towns; loses the better sound of the 4.0. I think Porsche designed the 2.5 litre not primarily for economy/emissions reasons, but for the utility of not having to get to higher revs for everyday driving conditions. Better driveability 99% of the time. And they both have near equal 4.0/4.5 - zero to 60 times auto/manual. As with the 911 vs Boxster, it's the status of the 4.0 vs. better driveability of the 2.5.
Great review!
Great review, I'm about to replace my BMW M4 Competition with a 718 Cayman GTS in Carmine Red (PDK). Hope I don't live to regret it, I'm sure I won't as it will be my first Porsche ever having had several ///M Cars. Looking forward to driving a true sports car! :)
Great review
Nice. A comparison of two cars I can never afford ;D
Well done great review!
Thanks Thomas for your great review. I drove my 718 Cayman from Munich to Switzerland, and I had a great driving experience in Germany without having to worry about speed limits and radars. Just to note that the fuel consumption rocketed and the brakes pad smells a little bit when braking at 190 km/h.
Thanks for the review
Greets from Spain.
thanks Juan!
Great video. I have had a 2019 Cayman S for about 7 weeks now and I can't love it enough. I agree the front end of the 911 looks much better, but it was really out of my price range anyway.
Have a look at the Boxter-Cayman between the years 2013 > 2016 (second generation). Observe the headlights are mor 'standing up' in comparision with the earlier iterations and the 718 range. The whole front looks more agressive.
Had an 2007 Cayman, 2011 Boxster Spyder and now a 2019 911 Turbo Cabriolet. All were fabulous cars love every one of them. 911 is an unbelievable car. Can't go back to the Boxster/Cayman now!
Exceptional review! Great job with thorough reviews of practically all elements of the vehicles. I appreciate the comparison done here and the honesty of assessment that is not clouded by the prestige of the more expensive car. They are both beautiful sports cars but I would agree that the 718 is the winner.
Highly appreciated! Please recommend ☺️
I RESPECT this man, True German journalist for German cars. PERFECT !
Hi Thomas. In my 718 you also have a smartphone connection in the glovebox. Just to let you know. As for the rest : always enjoyable and complete videos; keep up the good work, I enjoy it !
Yeah, the one also had that, didnt I mention/show?
Yes, my 2019 718 Cayman has one in the glovebox too.
Thomas, apologies as I am very late to the party here but I wanted to say this is very well done. Very compelling argument and very professional quality of production. Cheers from Atlanta!
Cheers m8!
Have a 718 GTS with a stick and would take that over a 911 any day and yes I do like the sound. Thanks for the great review.
Long time 911 owner. The new 911 has been made to be like a MB SL. From my test drive of the new 992 it is a ghost of what it once was. My issue with the new 992 is it’s just too big. The new 911’s look fat and obese instead of muscular. It’s huge compared to the air-cooled 911’s and lots bigger than the water cooled 996/997 yet there is no more usable space? The Cayman is really the best drivers car but Porsche will never let the Boxster/Cayman advance beyond the 911 and that is why Porsche has become their worst enemy. Build materials in the new 992 is cheap and Porsche’s option list and prices are ridiculous even by Porsche standards. The center console design is a train wreck and the square robot penis gear shifter is not helping. You can forgive these shortcomings in the SUV and Panamera models but now they have infected the 911 line. Ugh.. The 911 is now way overpriced for what it is and how it is built. I am replacing my 911 with a “M Car”.
The review as always is the best online. You are professional and look at a car the way a experienced owner would. Great job.
thanks so much for the profound feedback!
Great commentary Mystro TY! As a long time 993 owner I totally agree on the oversized recent 911s.
Thank Mystro, great comments. When you say M Car do you mean the BMW M-cars? Is a BMW M anywhere close to a Porsche. To me, seems to be sporty saloon only?
The back of the 911's and Cayennes are quite fat and ugly. The rear looks like it was designed with help from Lincoln. I am currently getting used to a 991S cabriolet which feels quite large but very enjoyable with the sport exhaust and powerful enough to spin the rear wheels even after it is moving at 30mph.. I just switched from a 9974s. Yes these are the best reviews on youtube. For daily use i have an overpowered tuned S4 which is my favourite car.
41:46 good information. Good to know this kind of driving impression that you don’t get much in car review videos.
💪
Great explanation...
I'm not a Porsche fan. But both are awesome lol. None petrolhead can deny it.
I would buy it. They both seems great.
2:28 The 911 with the roof down, from the side is not really a beauty, exterior wise I prefer the 718 Boxster, except for the rear lights. That new design of the rear lights of the 911 are fantastic. Great video as always Thomas.
appreciated!
Excellent comparison/review. I took delivery of a new 2019 Cayman 8 weeks ago. Just clocked up 2000 miles tonight. I am more than pleased with my purchase. The 911 is outside my price range so very interesting comparison for me as I cannot compare both myself. Thank you.
The same goes for me : I have a 718 Boxster. Would love to have a 911 but also out of my price range. I would like to test the 992 as well (I will do this once the manual gearbox is out), but I must say the Boxster is a superb car. I don't think you get more fun in the 911 for that extra money...
Same here. I have the 981 Boxster S. The sound of this engine is sooo nice. The 911 was out of my price range. Driven the new 992 carrera. Fast car and a lot of tech.
Thanks for the review as I was on the fence between the two. I will definitely go Boxster :)
Another terrific review Thomas. I am in the market for a new sports car and my short list (718 GTS 4.0, 911, and 2020 Corvette) just got shorter. The 911 is out of the running so now it is between the 718 and the Corvette.
718
Excellent video, thank you.
I agree with Thomas’s conclusions. Perhaps the ultimate combo is MX5 and GT4.
Almost have ultimate combo Mx-5 and 718 Boxster. Believe me Mx-5 is more fun to drive.
For 911 money, you should get a Cayman T for the track/weekend and a Boxter Spyder for everything else.
agree 100% the Spyder is gorgeous as well as an excellent sports car. the one mod would be changing the long 2nd & 3rd gearing.
Great review, bravo! I was looking for a comparison between the 718 and the 911 just to convince even more myself on my choice as I got a 718 S last year. I have never experience such handling on this car category, it is orgasmic. Thanks for the review
S is a much better car than T.
Last September I had a choice of a 718 Cayman S MY2018 or a 911 Carrera 4S MY2016. Same mileage, same price, both PDK. Both myself and my wife concluded the 718 was the car we wanted to drive, so we traded in my Mustang GT for the 718 CS. Makes me look forward just to drive to the supermarket!
😎
How was the swap to the Porsche from the mustang? I’m in the same boat with a GT PP2.
Wonderfully balanced review…loved it!
cheers feel free to share =)
Thank you for your review. I'm a fourth generation base coupe Cayman owner since 2016. With absolutely no options but model designation delete, the car always delivers. The only modification I made was to chip it to 365 hp and replace the exhaust with FabSpeed.
Thanks and enjoy!
Great to hear you can mod the 981 cayman. Was it the base or the S model?
Great video Thomas both truly wonderful cars I think the 718 GTS 4.0 would be my choice. The rear is nicer too.
My experience on boxster 981 :two weeks ago, 500km,mountains and ordinary road, no motorways at all, my back felt totally ok, no pain. I am 1,80 meter, 77 kg.
@Riccardo Leonardi 20 pollici. Sedili sport in pelle forata.
Nice presentation!
Excellent review and comparison. If money was no object I’d still go for the Cayman, but then I am biased as I have a 2019 718 Cayman. I can say that the ‘standard’ basic sports seats are in fact very comfortable on long runs.
Wonderful to see and hear the 718T. I was hoping for the Spyder but I am not worthy of one, however, any Joe can buy the 718 T and it seems to still be a fine motor car.
Excellent review! Not often we see the 911 and 718 head to head. There is a (false) perception I think sometimes that 911 buyers don't cross-shop with the 718. On a side note, I find it incredible that it takes that long for the infotainment screen to warm up. Any Ford or Honda would be instant on. And "weak battery" from just using the PCM? Are you kidding? Hopefully Porsche will iron these bugs out soon. No way is that acceptable in a 150K car.
Cheers!
Good job. Talking more a little about the suspension and ride experience in both units in each mode gives us more idea of the comfort vs performance and the balance vs road conditions how different conditions will feel. Thanks again great job I’ll take two 718’s his and hers for the price of the 911!
=)
Great review, gotta say after driven both - 992 is like the new panamera and I enjoyed the 718 much more on b roads 👍 living in Sweden 992 (4s) might be better in snowy conditions as I plan to use it as a daily, but its all about how heavy the right foot is and I cant wait for my 718 S 🙌
I’ve had two 997 C2S cabs, one 997 C4S cab, and I’m on my 3rd Boxster S (718 2.5L). I prefer the Boxster platform because it makes me look forward to driving. Just more fun. All cars were/are manuals, btw.
I agree with you.
I am currently on the 718GTS, and I want to switch to the 718 successor in the future.
And that must be the new 4-litre GTS
Good discussions there - but agree with Thomas. I like the 718's speedy go-kart effect, but not the rough ride. Or price! Good Car Wash joke though! 39:11 brave guy pulling out in front of a 911 - kudos to Thomas's usual calm driving reaction! 42:19 was that a complaining cyclist! That rough road at the end for the 911, is smooth compared to UK roads! Many thanks Thomas.
=)
Great show, thank you.
👍👍
uses a ruler to measure the trunk depth, genius, compared to others who stick their arms in. good job
Welcome! Hope u subbed :)
sippinh2o Attention to detail is what makes someone a genius. This guy’s reviews are my cup of tea.
It is interesting - all those complaints about the 4cyl 718 engine sound. Yet now, with the dampeners on the 911, the 718 sounds better !
Nice 👍🏻 good job 👏 Thomas ... I wud rely like to see your opinion and a good review on the new MG ZSEV SUV 🚙 see all the hype about
And is it really good .. let us know ?
I’ve driven 911, Boxster, and Cayman. The handling limits of the mid-engine layout are so high that it feels like a momentum car. You just don’t seem to need much power to turn low lap times. That said, the 911 feels like a car that has been getting better for 6 decades. It sounds, drives and feels like a flagship car. Brutally quick, but feels so competent and solid, like acceleration is just a minor talent. You can cover distances with almost no effort or fatigue. The controls are so precise in each car. If you want to effortlessly tour, get the 911. If you want to feel the speed, get the 718.
I have to say that I own a '17 Cayman S and I'm very pleased with your comments and conclusions. The 911 is a fabulous Porsche but has evolved into a semi sports car, gaining bulk and is now more of a boulevard cruiser. To me, the Boxster/Cayman series are truer to the Porsche history of light efficient sports cars. One final thought for you 911 people, why has Porsche now gone to mid-engine for the new 911 RSR's that will make their racing debut in January 2020?
S is much better than T.
