My empathy quickly dried up for him when he decided to get back at everyone he viewed as flesh monsters because they didn't know how their normal interactions were torturous to him and he didn't let them know. While I understand he was in a difficult situation since he didn't want to be viewed as insane, he really just let the situation consume him.
Exactly he was smart enough to understand that those were his actual friends and what he was seeing wasn't the true reality. plus if he did tell them about it im pretty sure they wouldve been understanding and ready to help lmao
@@glossedi help how exactly? the best they could do for him would either be to leave him alone or point him to a doctor. and hes says in the game very clearly that he doesnt want to see any doctors bc its likely theyd put him through tests and other things and potentially have him stuck in a hospital to be studied
@@glossedi yeah if i recall correctly when his best friend learns of what's really going on for him psychologically, he actually feels bad for him for a bit and wishes he knew earlier and didn't blame him for it
I'd say that the "Fuminori Wins" isn't as bad as you make it out to be. It was actually implied in Ogai's notes what Saya's true purpose is. She wasn't a creation. She came into this dimension as a sinister seed, like her dandelion monologue. While she is a monster from our perspective, she has experienced human emotions, in a way. Besides, nothing mattered anymore to Fuminori anyway. The world going to shit is none of his concern.
Yeah I just have a strong aversion to it. A commenter on here convinced me that it’s a fitting end to the story, but it just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth personally. I can understand now why people like it. Also yeah I’ve been corrected about the creation of Saya a few times, sometimes it’s hard to remember all the details, even in stories that I love. Thanks for watching!
I love that ending. We can see saya's perspective. And through all these metamorphosis Fuminori went, rejecting humanity, he was able to see and hold on to Saya's perspective. For us she may be horrendous monster infesting the world. But Saya isn't monster nor human for herself. She is what she is. It was the ending for greater good of her kind. New beginning. And Fuminori is going be the only human to witness the beauty of it in its entirety. Exactly because he rejected humanity. There u go, perspective of a sick fuck^^
Yeah. We may want humanity to win in every circumstance, especially when the hero is a monster, but Fuminori’s victory is conceptually changing the word to fit his own image, making everyone see things from his perspective because good and bad are ultimately judged by the majority perspective. When the majority is convinced good is evil and evil is good, who can oppose it? The main problem with Fuminori and Saya’s victory is Yoh. Once they tortured Yoh out of wanton sadism they abandoned the idea that killing them is morally ambiguous and made it 100% justified to kill them.
@@antmane7 It is all kinds of relative, a being is pulled from where it should be and fulfills its biological duty. As disturbing as the ending is the implication is that some implication that humanity may be pushed to a higher level. It should leave you with a bad taste in your mouth though, because the overall amount of suffering imparted may have been higher than if saya had just died.
To me this was a story about "beauty in the eye of the beholder" A monster who you glance at leaves you with permanent psychological damage. But to fumi it was the only beautiful creature in his world. Very well made story and one I won't forget.
In a literal sense, yes. But consider this: Fuminori doesn't hesitate from lashing out and killing his friends, because he sees them as monsters. They aren't human to him. Not only that, Fuminori himself says that Saya is the reason he didn't end his own life. The reason is that Saya looks normal to him. The reason why he loves her is because she looks human. From how we see him interact, he would have hated if not outright tried to kill Saya if he saw her real form. He simply doesn't care as long as he sees her as human.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" doesn't work in many cases, especially in case of Fuminori. He's literally brain-damaged, so he was fucked up since the beginning. Saya was THE ONLY ONE creature that could look closely as human to him. If she was in her true, cosmic monster form and Fumi could see her like this, he would completely lose his mind, reject Saya and maybe try to end his life to put himself out of misery. In "Humanity Wins" ending, he literally kills himself after losing Saya. There are a lot of studies, which prove, that many humans have similar patterns of how they consciously or unconsciously respond to same things. A lot of people, when they see an obese person, automatically feel repulsion or even disgust to them, even if they didn't have ANY malitious intents to obese people. It isn't just personal preferences, it's how your brain was "wired" through evolution and history of your ethnicity. We are BORN to feel fear and disgust to creatures like Saya, cause these feelings helped our ancestors to survive. If Fumi wasn't brain-damaged, believe me, he WOULD fear her, too. In one of endings, where Saya makes Fumi to see the world normal again, and Fumi is put into metal hospital, Saya willingly separates herself from Fumi and answers him on the phone, that she doesn't want him to see her in her true form, cause even Saya doesn't know, will Fummi accept her true nature or he will lose all of his feelings to her after witnessing of what monster she is.
@@DestroyerOfDoom Underrated in that not enough people talk about it, as well as the fact that I think it is much better than most people give it credit for, even though they think it is good. I think it is absolutely incredible, definitely one of Nitro+'s stand-out titles in my opinion. Thus, I would consider it underrated.
There are some surprising details that are incorrect in here. I can't say I blame you because it's a whole synopsis of a visual novel, but some of these are super important to the setting and game: 1) While he isn't the good guy, Fuminori IS the protagonist. A protagonist is who we follow in a story, and an antagonist is anyone that goes against them in their goals and achievements. 2) Fuminori and his friends are college students, not high schoolers. This is important to the story because it explains a lot of the scenery like lecture halls, his access to resources, as well as his background in neuroscience. He uses his knowledge of this area countless times to rationalize the hellscape he's forced to experience, as he is aware of cognitive disorders / resources for mental health hospitals / practices in neurosurgery. Saya's ability to manipulate bodies and brains isn't seen as magic to him, like it might for someone who is much younger or inexperienced. If he didn't have this knowledge and maturity he would have been unable to rationalize what is going on with him and also know how to hide his symptoms long-term. 3) Saya is not a creation of the professor, but in his notes she is a creature from another dimension that he is studying. 4) You mentioned two endings, but there are actually three. There is the Saya Wins / Humanity Wins endings and then the alternate ending that can happen much earlier in the game where Fuminori gives Saya permission to "fix" him so that he is able to live normally again. He realizes himself that he was eating people, turns himself in, receives treatment at a mental hospital, and he and Saya say goodbye as she gives up on her plans to take over the world and go back in search of her "father", the doctor.
Yeah, I’ve gotten comments about all of these, I just didn’t have time to cover the 3rd end but I obtained it. The other critiques are valid though, and I’ll be more careful in the future. I wrote this video a while after I read it. Thanks for watching!
@@curlybrace4984 It's the best one, but damn if it's not the saddest. The way Saya and Fumi exchange messages through a phone because Saya doesn't want to show herself and ruin Fumi's image of her. She was a morally bankrupt monster but her love for Fumi was real. My heart man :(
Very nice video 34:18 Actually fuminori is the protagonist not the antagonist Protagonist means the main character whether they’re good or bad And saya isn’t the antagonist either because she’s not in the way of protagonist’s goal Koji is the main antagonist
yeah, i always dismiss peoples opinions when they keep mixing up villain with antagonist, or hero with protagonist, its basic writing knowledge. its like saying light yagami is the antagonist in his OWN series, like lmao.

Studying sound/music theory, the parts where Saya shows, you can dissect the layers into two: a violin playing slowly with melancholy AND upbeat electronic music. Critiquing it goes to show that scenes with Saya is bright on the outside layer but is dark on the inside. But maybe that's just how I look things are.
Narratively and thematically, I do think your version of the Fuminori Wins ending would be better. ... If we weren't dealing with a Cosmic Horror type of story. There isn't REALLY any sort of acceptable ending to those that isn't "The Eldritch Abomination Wins". Even Lovecraft, to my knowledge, all the best endings to those stories is really just "Congrats, you somehow managed to delay the inevitable. Enjoy your 10 to 30 years of relative peace within an insane asylum that doesn't actually care about your well-being."
at around 8:30 you bring up a point about how it's surprising that nothing odd showed up on the MRI scans for Fuminori, but in my opinion I think that could lend to the fact that Fuminori's altered perception is a sort of stand-in for the wider theme of mental illnesses like depression or anxiety; things that would be typical for someone who had just survived a near-death experience. While these things do cause changes that would show up on an MRI, none of them are out of the ordinary enough to be conclusive. I'd like to think that the statement is about how someone with mental disorders can potentially go unchecked, because there is no concrete physical proof of their issues, and how their fear of stigmatization and repercussions for something completely out of their control convinces them to keep their afflictions hidden, leaving them to suffer alone.
@@robertmandain5791 i apologize that I actually watched the whole video before commenting and thus only had a general idea of where the time stamp was. 👍👍👍

Yeah, i think this game speaks volumes of the treatment that mentally ill people get. They are stigmatized, even feared sometimes. It discourages people to actually talk about their problems and makes them try to hide it in both theirs and their peers' detriment Even if there's no physical concrete proof, doesn't mean the person isn't suffering mentally. I think that's important to remember sometimes
A couple of things. No one was pulled INTO the flesh realm, it's all in his head. Saya rapes and alters the DNA of Yoh to turn her into a creature that they rape together. The neighbor was lobotomized with Saya's tentacles to give him the same ailment. Lastly, Saya was not a creation, the doctor says that he made contact with an otherwordly being and that she's aking to a "drone"; Saya is just a part of some bigger species or creature, that is sent to alter the DNA of the native species to terraform the planet and reproduce.
Considering the fact that that other guy almost instantly turned into a primal animal when he entered the flesh world and Fuminori didn't, that implies that Fuminori was already insane
The interesting thing about insanity is that you aren't able to diagnose your own insanity, because the very organ you use to diagnose anything, the brain, is compromised. So the feeling of insanity must be along the lines of "I feel like I'm perfectly fine, but the whole world has gone crazy," which fits Fuminori to a tee.
very late reply, but it's stated that Fuminori didn't regain his sight first and was able to somewhat smooth his transition into meat world. His neighbor didn't and even worse the first thing he saw was his own house.
The art of Saya no Uta is evident in the fact that it has stuck with me for close to 10 years now. It just pops into my head every now and then, today decided to look it up again and found your video. Completely forgot how impactful the soundtrack was. It makes the world feel so empty and small and dark
23:00 + I think you've brought up the intention to kill way to early tbh. At this point in the story he just wanted to abandon his friends. I personally love the point where he eats the flesh of his former friend without even knowing. It's truly horrific and beautiful.
I agree, Song of Saya is an essential visual novel, especially for horror enthusiasts. There were some points where I was scared to simply click the mouse button to advance the story. I thought horror games couldn't scare me anymore after playing Alien Isolation, but I've apparently been missing out! Several scenes from Song of Saya still haunt me: Omi searching Fuminori's house, Fuminori's neighbor turning violent, Tsukuba Yoh's final phone call, any of the sex scenes, and any of the endings (none of which I can describe as "happy").
finished saya no uta yesterday, i think saya is a interdimentional creature, she wasn't made by Ogai, he somehow found her, then he studied and rised her. Anyway, really good video i enjoyed it! keep it up mate!
@@strangecitizen you know? i've heard the term "silver key" used in other fictions. may be it is something from lovecraft? or may be is a common term used in english which i'm not familiar with since my native lenguage is spanish
It’s been 3 years, but I just want you to know that you are correct! The silver key is both a book and an item within the lovecraft universe. The key unlocks gates of space and time and allows access to remote times and places of the universe. Going by your theory, that could absolutely mean that Saya came to earth in that way.
Great video, it's always great to see other people discover Saya no Uta. I really liked your editing, especially how you assigned the various tracks to the topics/events that you were discussing. It's been quite awhile since I read the visual novel but I always had the impression that Ogai somehow summoned Saya from another dimension. Also the Fuminori & Saya wins ending is hinted at earlier in the story. Saya talks about how she is like a dandelion: " You know the dandelion flower? The one that scatters its seeds on the wind? The wind carries those fluffy seeds far, far from where they were born. What if one of them ends up in a desert where not even a single blade of grass is growing? If you can imagine how that lone seed will feel... then you might be able to understand me. That seed is still a baby flower. If it does its best, it can turn even a desert into a garden. Maybe that little seed will decide to thrive. Maybe it will decide to grow and multiply, so that it can turn the whole desert into a field of dandelions. What do you think can give it the strength to do so? All it needs... is to be loved by just one person in the whole desert. All it needs is to be told how pretty dandelions are." Towards the end she is basically describing how Fuminori's love will allow her to grow and multiply like how she does in the ending. Once our hero Koji is killed, Fuminori and Saya's love for each other peaks allowing her to fully realize her sole biological purpose. I'm suprised you didn't mention the third ending where Fuminori gets locked up in an insane asylum after getting his original senses back. I have found that many people online think that's the best ending.
Oh wow, I didn’t really look into that dandelion speech. That’s honestly really strong evidence for Saya traveling great distances before meeting Fumi. Especially cause Ogai’s lab is hours away, she’s probably visited a lot of places searching for that love. Thanks for highlighting that! Yeah I wanted to talk about the 3rd but, there’s too much to cover and I couldn’t get to it. I actually chose that route first. It’s really sad that it’s actually the better option for him emotionally, and just in general, to stay in the flesh world. Thanks for checking this review out :+)
While you despise endings where greater good is sacrificed for a close relationship, I love those endings more than anything. Because those type of endings is where humanity and desire is put on full display. When people are at their lowest, witnessing what they’re willing to do is so beautiful that it’s almost tear inducing. This has been my favorite story in all of fiction for nearly ten years and I doubt that’s ever going to change. The True ending is the best thing that could ever happen to our species. Given what we know about Saya: her species is incredibly resistant to all forms of damage and has the brain capacity beyond our greatest supercomputers. Imagine our potential once we become a part of her species. No longer will anyone suffer the immense agony and suffocating feeling of loneliness anymore, no longer will anyone be shamed for their physical appearance, no longer will mental illness be a thing. Everyone will look the same and all be capable of the same extraordinary achievements. Once that happens, perhaps we can finally put aside our egos and come together as one, singular, loving existence of endless potential. And it was all due to the love one man and extraterrestrial being had for each other. A love where even one’s capacity for empathy was lost, turned out to be the best thing FOR humanity in the end. To deny such an outcome is merely fear. Much of Lovecraft’s themes are humans fearing the unknown. The fear of change. Of course that can only be seen as bad from our base primal instincts. But I am not afraid, because I am able to see the outcome. It is not unknown to me.
While I'm not convinced it's a good ending, I have to agree on you that these selfish endings are AMAZING, a story that can toy with my emotions and curiosity so hard that I'm willing to throw my moral compass out the window, that is a story worth remembering and seeing to the bitter end.
I...find your scenario to be utterly mortifying and disgusting. I do not want to be connected with people at the cost of my own existence. The one thing I love in my life as a neurodivergent person, is my individuality. Achievement means nothing to me if its handed. Knowledge is worthless if I cannot keep it. I do feel shame and certain dysphorias, but I'd rather have them. The sheer lack of agency from a world filled with people I dislike, makes me wish to vomit. I have very little left in this world. Let me keep it.
Objectively, it's true. But what makes us human is our detriments. Everyone likes to think they want to ascend from humanity but such ascensions come at a cost. What would your viewpoint be if we somehow get the tech to live forever? To augment of weak flesh and minds into godhood? Is that a dystopia or a utopia? Remember, the perfect dystopia is one where the residents THINK they're living in a utopia A hivemind existence is the objectively better world, but for whom? The one controlling the hivemind and not anyone else. The ant queen doesn't care for her soldiers after all, they're replaceable and they'll gladly do so without question. A perfect society where the needs of the many outweigh the few
Instant like, my friend. You're definitely stepping up your commentary game, and I can easily tell you're going places with this. Can't wait for the next video, whenever that may be!
Thanks man. I enjoy making these a lot, plus I get to put the spotlight on awesome games that need more attention. Even if only small handful of people enjoy them that’s more than I could ask for. 🙌🏻
Well congrats, you hooked me. Haven't read a good horror VN in forever, I guess I'll have to play it and not spoil myself with the rest. I'll come back and share my thoughts when I've finished it. Since it's the weekend, I'll probably marathon it tonight. EDIT: I absolutely loved the ending where Koji keeps a gun with a single bullet behind his bathroom mirror which "promises salvation." That salvation is _agency;_ simply having the means to make a choice to end your own life or keep on living can be enough to save one from total despair. The fate he chose for himself sits in direct contrast to the fate of Yoh, who Saya robbed of agency completely. Transformed into a hideous mass of flesh in constant pain which only a madman could see as beautiful, she pleaded with Koji to give her an end to her suffering she was unable to grant herself. Seeing Omi's fate was enough to drive Koji to kill, but witnessing what happened to _Yoh_ was so appalling that the by the end, the only that that kept him glued together was knowing he could spare himself any such fate with a single bullet. It's brilliant. I've never so been satisfied with a depressing ending before.
I had the misfortune of playing this game at a young age thanks to my cousin, and now I'm checking what's this game all about. I might play this again with a new perspective thanks to this analysis.
You're not always going to be fine, but it always gets worse than this, be fearful of what else you could discover or learn. I'm totally leaving out this video, the aqua blue couldn't snare me.
I am so happy that someone actually put the time and effort to make an analysis into this much underrated gem, I've been a huge fan of this Visual Novel for almost 15 years now, it is not enough to say that this masterpiece alone changed my perspective about life, thank you for this!
Two things: 1. Saya wasn't created by Ougai, he summoned her from another dimension after he researched deep into the esoteric. In Ougui's diary, he mentioned that Saya only gained sentience after coming to Earth, with no memory of what her homeworld is like. This prompted him to speculate that she either is a probe sent by the flesh species to research on other sapient species, or a seed pod drifting through the universe waiting to "bloom" and populate other planets with her species. Both speculations are correct. 2. It's true that Saya no Uta draws heavy influence from Lovecraft's work, as the author Gen Urobuchi is a huge Lovecraft fan and any work done by him *will* always have some Lovecraftian elements or homages in them (Caster in Fate/Zero, the whole pantheon of Demonbane, Kyubey in Puella Magi Madoka Magica, etc). However, the premise of Saya no Uta also borrows from Osamu Tezuka's manga "Phoenix," in which the protagonist has agnosia and perceive humans as massive blobs of metal. He falls in love with a robot who appears in his vision as a beautiful girl. Fuminori mentions the very manga to Saya after killing his neighbor. The closest thing to Saya in Lovecraft's mythos would be the Great Race of Yith, an alien species that has the technology to swap minds with other sapient species. They use this both to gather knowledge by swapping with individuals and learning from within other civilizations (including humans), and to ensure their own survival by swapping en masse with another species, taking their place and leaving their minds to die in the Yithians' previous bodies.
Great review! One thing i have to mention tho ... Ryoko do not use -Ice Amunition to kill Saya- , she throws a thermo filled with liquid nitrogen at Koji , who empty's it on Saya , Fumi then slice Kyoko with his axe , but before she dies , she shoots one last time at the now frozen solid Saya. (Wich is why Kyoko is wounded in the picture where she holds the gun sideway) Amazing review tho!
Man, this game is something entirely else. First VN I've "played" (probably the word is readed). It was highly recommended on the store were I bought it and it was uncensored. Not particulary fond of those scenes, but I think it can add something else underneath if done right. I was hooked from the start. The art, song, script. It felt good. I though by the start it was going to be a game about the horrors of the mind after a heavy trauma and how to deal with it in the best way possible with Saya on his side. Both needed each other so it felt like a good duo. Then, it all collapsed once the dude starting banging the girl. My expectatives were destroyed. Got angry at the game a whole day, like seriously mad. But I continued the very same day at night. It hooked me again, there were some disturbing scenes I couldn't imagine existing. But the answer was there by the end and it made the whole game a experiece I will never forget. I'll add "disturbing" at the list of things I would want in modern horror media besides just scares from a ugly creepy monster.
Love this vid, great to see Saya no Uta getting some love. But I have to strongly disagree that the Saya ending would be bad. The game is an obvious nod to HP Lovecrafts concept of Cosmicism. And basically the closest anyone have ever come to write a "Lovecraftian Romance" , that is still true to Lovecrafts general ideas. The point of the Saya ending isn't that Fumi sacrificed himself for love. The point is that he was a tool all along and was used by an eldritch abomination (Saya) to further its own goal without any care for lowly creatures such as humans. Humans that could be ants for all she cares. If you know your Lovecraft the ending is great, IMO. Anyway this was a really solid video essay on a hugely underrated game.
So, if I'm understanding the synopsis correctly, Fumi is a self aware mentally insane college student who fell in love with an eldritch horror not of this world who also shares feelings for him. He tries to hide his symptoms from his therapist and friends to varying degrees of success until he finally snaps and either gets fixed, kills himself in depression, or lets humanity die for Saya. Damn, that's fucking sad. It's funny, 'Saya' means 'Me' in my home language. So, while I'm writing this, I occasionally misread my own comment as Fumi being in love with himself. Eldritch love story where the godlike being falls in love with it's own mortal shell? Hmmm, not a bad concept for a story actually...
I forgot how impactful Koji's ending felt in this VN. I love the psycho eyes the doctor gives Fujimori as she blasts Saya to pieces! Though, I'm also a big fan of the Saya ending. She achieved her purpose only because she successfully nurtured the love inside of Fujimori. He became a monster for her and they both created a world full of flesh and gore for their children. I personally find martyrdom overrated, so seeing his unwavering loyalty bring about the destruction of mankind for the one that stood by him AND understood his pain felt perfect!
39:00 + why would Saya be suddenly gone though? The made has made it clear enough that she actually cares a lot about him. Kinda unfitting in this aspect. Also, I think a kind of happy ending for those two is rather fitting; Since the VN is all about those 2 completely different perspectives, where evil and good are swapped. Depending on how you look at it, their revolution of the world might actually flourish into something far greater than mankind.
Saya no Uta is probably, as I've said before, the closest we can get to a lovecraftian story as told through a visual novel. We even have the suspiciously well-armed scholar in the second half. Sure the endings have flaws, but I think they're both perfect.
Cool video! But now I cannot get rid my head of an idea for a wholesome alternative universe, where the set up is the same and Saya is still a lovecraftian horror, but she's a certified live-in nurse lovecraftian horror lololol Instead of having codepended relationship with Fuminori she actually helps him dealing with everyday life, encourages him to be honest with his doctor etc. There's some backstory about how she always wanted to help people but couldn't because of her appearance (it's not explained though how the hell did she get her certificate). It ends with Fuminori getting a brain surgery and returnng to normal life. Saya is certain that he's going to be disgusted with her now that he can see ho she really looks but he's grateful for how much she helped him. They stay friends and keep in touch. Everybody claps
There is an ending where Saya reverses the effect of the surgery on Fuminori's brain, naturally he ends up being arrested for eating his friend. In his prison cell he keeps waiting for Saya, who appears later and they talk to each other on a phone since Saya does not want to ruin the image of her in Fuminori's head.
This video was amazing, you explained so well what i was feeling playing it. I seriously recommend Maggot Bait, you need to be able to live with extreme content but the story behind it, is a masterpiece
@@antmane7 Playing it right now actually! I'm powering through it tonight. Really loving it so far! Just really captivated me. And that soundtrack! I noticed the Steam version lacks the sex scene you mentioned, so I tracked down a 'Director's Cut' patch and am applying it now. Not sure how much value this adds to the experience but I didn't want to miss anything. Perhaps that would be worth mentioning in your review, offering an opinion on if its worth it or not.
@@antmane7 Just finished the game, and your analysis! Very cool man, I'm so glad you made this video so that I could learn about this fascinating tale. I agree with your analysis, especially about the Maslow's hierarchy of needs aspect. However, one thing I think you missed is that Saya is not a creation of man. If you read the Dr's words, he discovered her, and discusses his theories on the origin of her race. He discovered through his occult research how to open a portal to another dimension, through which Saya appears, with no memory of her origin. However, there is one part of the story I don't understand and I'd like to know your thoughts on: How did Fuminori's strange condition happen in the first place? I refuse to believe its just a coincidence that his delusions cause him to see monsters that look exactly like Saya's species. My thoughts are that the Dr. had it done to create a mate for Saya, as he mentions he hopes she can find love. But this isn't stated anywhere in the game outright. Btw, the uncensor patch probably wasn't worth it and just seems more pervy than anything else. I have a real aversion to lollicon/underage porn, and I didn't realize just how young she looked until the patch. I thought I'd tolerate it for the sake of the story but this was right on that line for me, not sure if I'll revert it or not.
@@MrIronJustice ah you’re right. Thank you for catching me on that mistake. I’ve only read it one time through for each ending so there’s still some stuff I didn’t remember details about. As for fuminori seeing flesh species, I think that actually is apart of the condition seeing that the neighbor sees his family in the flesh form as well. I think you’re probably right Ogai would make sure Saya would warp people’s senses to do that. That way, If saya pulls you in, you know she’s your only potential mate in this world. Sorry I’m kinda high writing this hahaha I hope that makes sense. So yeah, you get pulled into the flesh world, you see everybody as monsters except her meaning you’d HAVE to mate with her considering she’s the only person that looks human. I think that makes sense. If Saya is design to reproduce more of that powerful species like Ogai implies, she needs to make sure that people pulled into the flesh world will not choose ANYBODY else as a partner instead and reject saya. Anyways I’m really happy you enjoyed it. And totally understand on dodging the patch if it makes you feel too sick witnessing those 18+ scenes. Cheers!
The only reason I feel uniquely attached to Fuminori is that, for a reason still entirely beyond me, since I was about 12, I’ve never had what i would call a positive dream. Nearly every night o have persistent nightmares, death, shock, and injury are insufficient stimuli to startle me awake. The “narratives” of my nightmares are random and clearly influenced by the waking world, but only the worst versions play out in sleep. Raping and being raped, mutilated randomly, being forced into bodies that feel counter to my waking identity (Mai-chan’s Daily Life + Emergence is a solid equivalent vibe of me at rest apparently)… perhaps once a year at most (16 years going now) I have a dream that is generically typical in its bizarre but ultimately harmless charm, which is to me now more entirely unsettling as the nightmares are the norm. And I tend to remember at least one nightmare, often two-and-a-half from each night. Also, although I am blessed to not have paralysis when awaking, I do have nerve reactions for a time following sleep, where something resembling the minimum imitation of the nightmares I remember is felt in my skin for a while following (i.e., one nightmare ended with me being pinned down by guys in suits and shot full of bullets for like 2ish minutes nonstop. When I woke up, all the zones on my torso where I’d been shot constricted and flexed as if to imitate being pierced). So for about 32.9% of my life, my audiovisual perception and awareness of the world is basically Fuminori’s. Also, just in the waking world I too am, I suppose, an adult emo loser, who wants love but will likely never receive any nor be able to give an, if I am even capable of that in the first place. Alright, thanks for reading my TED talk.
I find myself sticking to the main character no matter what. And in saya no uta, that did not change. No matter how deranged or twisted, I will still wish for their victory. So I quite enjoyed the meat world ending lol. Phenomenal game
Thank you my friend! Glad you enjoyed. I am a firm opposer to nihilism in general which is probably why I don’t like it. But after reading a few comments on here I’ve grown an understanding of that ending. I personally don’t like it or identify with it but it fits well and I appreciate it as an alternative dark ending
@@antmane7 I also disagree with nihilism, but I think that reading a story from a person who thinks that way is really really interesting. Thanks for the reply!
I think you're misinterpreting the flesh world ending. It's not meant to be the canon ending, but the one that *could have* happened. Even if you empathize with Fuminori the whole time, this ending shows you the natural conclusion that would happen if everything did go his way, as if to say, "really? this is what you wanted to happen?"
i know you've already gotten tons of comments about the fuminori wins ending but i wanted to add on. i think you're right and wrong about the fuminori wins ending being dissatisfactory, but i think thats purposeful by design. i think the fact that one of the two chances to make a choice at this point is important in the theme of moral relativism: and the ending you choose caters towards the moral values of the perspective you take. fuminori's ending plays off of fuminori's morals. its dissatisfactory when you find fuminori repugnant, but so is kojis ending if you're someone much more invested in fuminori and saya's relationship over koji and the rest of humanity. but i really liked the video, i love hearing people talk about this rollercoaster of a visual novel, and your deeper analysis of it was great.
Thank you man! Glad you enjoyed. And you know, after reading some old comments on here, I’ve grown an understanding of the fuminori wins ending and you’re absolutely right it fits with the theme of moral relativism.
I’ll always wonder how it would have gone if saya did stay with him after returning his vision to normal? I can’t speak for Fuminori but judging by her Idw true appearance compared to to flesh monsters he saw in the visual novel I like to think there would have been hope for the two.
I think you missed the point about the 2nd ending. If the 1st ending is humanity's victory, the 2nd ending is Saya's victory. Thus humanity physically ceases to exist, humanity doesn't matter anymore. The whole story's perspective shifted, humanity lost and is rendered irrelevant. And if you are reading it as a human, it's no longer your business, the universe shall only consist of Saya beings doing Saya beings shit. It speaks not of human philosophy or 'doomer mentality', humanity simply lost against another species.
36:20 - I really have to ask, where did you find this remix of "Silent Sorrow"? I don't know how, but whoever made this made the single most depressing song in this game even more heart-wrenching, not to mention fits surprisingly well with your interpretation of the "Bloom" ending... even if I doubt Saya would just abandon Fuminori (Maybe she did get killed in the crash, who knows?)
Great video, I have been long considering making my own video on this VN because not very many people talk about it but thankfully this video basically covered everything I would have wanted to talk about. I'm also glad someone finally brought up the music because it's fucking amazing
I think your ending needs this... The world going to normal for a secound just for a man to shoot him , the policeman goes home opend his door and sees Saya and his room is a mess. I would laugh my ass off.
Got here through the algorithm to your mk3 video (excellent by the way) and was pleasantly surprised to find another high quality video on your channel. I'm surprised there are still so few views here, but keep on the effort and I'm confident the algorithm will help you again
Regarding the connection to the Lovecraftian mythos, it’s actually closer than many might think. In one note, Dr. Ogie wrote that he used a silver key to summon Saya. Yes, he didn’t create her; she is a being from another world. The silver key exists in Lovecraft's books, and has a direct connection to the eldritch god Yog-Sothoth, which implies that Saya is a child of that god-possibly the greatest and most fearsome of all gods. Additionally, Ogie mentioned unknown "clients" who commissioned his scientific work. When he discovered their true identities, he was terrified. Although their identities were not revealed in the game, I believe they were cultists of the god. For me, the game is not just inspired by Lovecraft-it actually exists within the same multiverse.
Hey you little goober, get your ass back here and start making VN dissections now! This was a phenomenal breakdown that’s convinced me to finally give the game a shot(right after I finished Fata Morgana). Thanks for the awesome video and hope you’ll create more.

I think your idea of a Fuminori ending is interesting, considering how the story began with a car accident - makes me think of an interesting bookend where Fumi dies in a car crash, leaving Saya alone. Maybe Fumi hallucinates about going to Heaven with Saya before he passes away, with the fate of Saya being unknown. I don’t mind the original Fumi ending, but it’s fun to think about alternative ending scenarios.
Thanks for letting us know about Part 2 where the spoilers start. I want to know a little bit before I commit. Not a big fan of the sex scenes, but the story is just too interesting. Though I'm wondering if the game will mess with my brain.
The ending where Fuminori wins is the best, tho i felt really bad for Fumi's friends, i still rooted for him and Saya till the End, all the moments i was worried through the game were the ones where their "peaceful life" was in danger, also the outcome of becoming part of Saya's species is probably a good thing for humanity
The kouji ending really pisses me off because it reminds me of death note and how Light dies despite all his effort, so I didn't want that to happen here too lol

That actually a good idea, but since saya not being a human, can hide and escape even in this scenario and fumi apprehended. They will meet in the future, because fumi will definitely sent to a mental hospital.

I lost it at how you pronounce cacophony. I am now questioning my entire existence... That being said, Saya no Uta and 999 were the two games that got me into visual novels. Although the latter is more of game game than a straight vn. Still I'd say it's a great introduction to the genre. After that it was planetarium and stiens gate. Good job on the video though. I feel like Saya looking her age is also a thing meant to make the reader feel more off putted, but that may also be my western views.
I love the Bloom ending because I'm in full agreement with Ogai. All other concerns become insignificant compared to the majesty of Saya's species. I am not a cultist (yet).
Really hate that you used higurashi as an example for cutesy anime that hides that it’s horror trope. Higurashi spoilets ahead: Things seeming normal and cute is the point because it’s a psychological horror about the paranoia and inevitable tragedy that develops when you alienate yourself from others when you are suffering rather than trusting your friends and family and asking for help. It’s literally the point for it to be jarring that they turn creepy all of a sudden because they’re putting you in the perspective of the person suffering in the chapter. If anything you could’ve used the plentiful horror magical girl shows that use that trope thoughtlessly ever since the popularity of Madoka which would’ve gone well with this video since it’s an Urobuchi work
I love the Fuminori Wins ending. It’s the true ending in my mind. SoS was my introduction to cosmic/psychological horror and though it’s been over a decade since I experienced it, the horror sticks with me to this day.
I agree that the “fuminori wins” ending was very out of nowhere and just seemed like an idiot plot from kojis perspective. Why would koji follow fuminori by himself to a second unknown location for a second when the first time he was kicked down a well and would’ve died lol. And saya’s species taking over the world felt out of nowhere and in my opinion just wasn’t a good conclusion. But other than that ending the whole game is phenomenal and one of the best pieces of fiction I’ve ever experienced.
“A good horror story needs fleshed out characters”
Ayy I see what you did there.
That was actually an accident :P
Pfp reminds me that the writer of this VN actually wrote madoka

I liked your ending, but Fuminori’s ending is closer in line with what cosmic horror is, “there is no escape, there is no hope”
@@antmane7 no problem. Very well made video aside the small details.
To me this was a story about "beauty in the eye of the beholder"
A monster who you glance at leaves you with permanent psychological damage.

There are some surprising details that are incorrect in here. I can't say I blame you because it's a whole synopsis of a visual novel, but some of these are super important to the setting and game:
1) While he isn't the good guy, Fuminori IS the protagonist.

Fuminori ain't in high school, he's on 3rd year med college 🥱

Yeah, i think this game speaks volumes of the treatment that mentally ill people get.
They are stigmatized, even feared sometimes. It discourages people to actually talk about their problems and makes them try to hide it in both theirs and their peers' detriment
Even if there's no physical concrete proof, doesn't mean the person isn't suffering mentally.
That, or Fuminori is on some Kaneki Ken shit. Really fucking stubborn to stay human. Until he isn't.

@@Cartoncito Yeah, I think "Silver Key" is a Lovecraftian term
@@strangecitizen so it must be a reference. anyway... amazing vn
Saya talks about how she is like a dandelion:
" You know the dandelion flower?
All it needs is to be told how pretty dandelions are."
Towards the end she is basically describing how Fuminori's love will allow her to grow and multiply like how she does in the ending.

You need to take your meds, sir.

Remember, the perfect dystopia is one where the residents THINK they're living in a utopia
A hivemind existence is the objectively better world, but for whom? The one controlling the hivemind and not anyone else. The ant queen doesn't care for her soldiers after all, they're replaceable and they'll gladly do so without question. A perfect society where the needs of the many outweigh the few
Instant like, my friend. You're definitely stepping up your commentary game, and I can easily tell you're going places with this. Can't wait for the next video, whenever that may be!

I think the Fuminori Wins ending is made to be our last chance to get off the ride before it enters absolute depravity lmao
A fucking masterpiece this was..
And I thought Higurashi was fucked up but this one is on a whole different level.
Higurashi is definitely leagues better than Saya in terms of quality, Saya is definitely major disturbed tho
I am so happy that someone actually put the time and effort to make an analysis into this much underrated gem, I've been a huge fan of this Visual Novel for almost 15 years now, it is not enough to say that this masterpiece alone changed my perspective about life, thank you for this!
Two things:
That's actually nice
There is an ending where Saya reverses the effect of the surgery on Fuminori's brain, naturally he ends up being arrested for eating his friend. In his prison cell he keeps waiting for Saya, who appears later and they talk to each other on a phone since Saya does not want to ruin the image of her in Fuminori's head.
I remember a friend of mine telling about this VN years ago. I see why he liked it now. Great Video, man.
Thank you man!
Good video. Idk i honestly wasn't really a huge fan of any of the endings but the concept and themes are so hooking
This video was amazing, you explained so well what i was feeling playing it. I seriously recommend Maggot Bait, you need to be able to live with extreme content but the story behind it, is a masterpiece
Oh god not Maggot Baits
Very nice video man, also thanks for recommending PearFinch. His music goes hard.
WOW your impressions were totally different than mine! That's so wild!
I love how the exact same narrative can be interpreted so many ways.
Fantastic deep dive, and I loved your idea for the ending where Fuminori "wins"
Thanks for watching! And glad you like the idea.
I stopped myself from watching your spoilers to check this out for myself. Definitely hard though since I'm enjoying your video so much.
Hahaha hey man come back once you’re done trying it. Thanks for watching
Cheers!
Aye bruh keep making vids I love the fact you talked about this underrated gem you're one of my favorite review channel
You might have nightmare disorder. Or whatever it's called idk.
i really love how the ost adds to the atmosphere, it is like it is scratching your brain wrinkles
I find myself sticking to the main character no matter what. And in saya no uta, that did not change. No matter how deranged or twisted, I will still wish for their victory. So I quite enjoyed the meat world ending lol. Phenomenal game
I think both endings are amazing, I completely understand how you would dislike the Saya Winning ending but I think it gets everything >> I like
Thank you my friend!
Well done bro. This is worthy of being what I watch while I eat. Can't wait to see where you go with this channel.
Thanks dude 🙏🏼
I heard that the 'silent hill' noise during saya's song is supposed to be saya's real voice singing. 17:53
I actually really like the fuminori ending mostly because of the “Overwhelmingly beautiful” line. Not the only reason but I still love the ending
You should make more videos like that for another visual novels!!! It was a sublime experience watching you talking about saya no uta
i know you've already gotten tons of comments about the fuminori wins ending but i wanted to add on. i think you're right and wrong about the fuminori wins ending being dissatisfactory, but i think thats purposeful by design. i think the fact that one of the two chances to make a choice at this point is important in the theme of moral relativism: and the ending you choose caters towards the moral values of the perspective you take. fuminori's ending plays off of fuminori's morals. its dissatisfactory when you find fuminori repugnant, but so is kojis ending if you're someone much more invested in fuminori and saya's relationship over koji and the rest of humanity.
but i really liked the video, i love hearing people talk about this rollercoaster of a visual novel, and your deeper analysis of it was great.
Thank you man! Glad you enjoyed. And you know, after reading some old comments on here, I’ve grown an understanding of the fuminori wins ending and you’re absolutely right it fits with the theme of moral relativism.
Really fantastic video it deserves WAY more than 5k views. The Koji ending is way better. Its a truly fitting ending.
I just slowed it down! It’s not a remix. But I hope you enjoyed my alternative ending :+) thanks for watching!
Incredible analysis. Enjoyed listening to your perspective. Also I like the alternative ending you thought up.
Great video, I have been long considering making my own video on this VN because not very many people talk about it but thankfully this video basically covered everything I would have wanted to talk about. I'm also glad someone finally brought up the music because it's fucking amazing
amazing video, i love this type of stuff. i wish there was more videos of yours like this to binge watch.
Thanks so much dude!
I like so much your ending. The Symbolic of the car becoming the beginning and the end. Perfect.
Great video man high quality stuff
No matter what cruel fate might await me, Saya-there’s nothing I fear more than losing you.
Amazing! This one of the best review for saya no uta. Looking forward to your future vids! Keep it up senpai!
This video is great, really liked your thoughts and take aways from the game/story. I can’t wait to see more videos from you.
Thanks man :+)
I second this
Regarding the connection to the Lovecraftian mythos, it’s actually closer than many might think.

Hey thanks m8 I really appreciate it. I’ve just been really busy in my personal life and making videos like this is tough sometimes. Maybe I will make another video I got frustrated making the last one that’s why I haven’t released anything. I super appreciate the kind words though.
I also played Fata Morgana last year it was a wonderful experience. Was hooked from the beginning.
Honestly, I wish I never watched this video.
Great video, INSANE VIDEO, but now
Yeah, I don't think I'm sleeping
Oooh nice psychological horror there ;p
I have a strong feeling your channel will go places. More of these video essays and reviews please. Peace!!
Thank you! Yup I got one I’m working on right now. They take a few months to make because of school so bear with me :+)
@@antmane7 Perfectly fine. Take your time, Good luck.
ok but surely we can agree ryoko is the real waifu. part time psychiatrist part time badass
She's actually a chief surgeon, not a psychiatrists. It was explicitly stated right at the start of the novel, in the interview scene
But, we can all agree on her being Full-Time broken.
Ur gonna be UA-cam famous if you keep this up
Naw man hahaha. I’m thankful to even have a few views :) but thanks for the kind words
@@antmane7 I'm a utoobeaholic I know good content when I see it lol I don't even play video games anymore and watches every minute or this and the mk3 one. You have some pretty good perception at least in the context of the artistic parts of games that I totally overlooked despite mk3 being one of my favorite games when I was a kid.
i think your video is great , but your idea of a good ending is very Americanised.
There's a third ending...... Won't spoil for you guys, just have to see for yourselves :)
Thanks for letting us know about Part 2 where the spoilers start.
I want to know a little bit before I commit.
Not a big fan of the sex scenes, but the story is just too interesting.
Though I'm wondering if the game will mess with my brain.
This vid was 4 months ago
F i did not know this suddely popped up on the internet that early
"fuminori is a high school student" minor story error ahah i win
The ending where Fuminori wins is the best, tho i felt really bad for Fumi's friends, i still rooted for him and Saya till the End, all the moments i was worried through the game were the ones where their "peaceful life" was in danger, also the outcome of becoming part of Saya's species is probably a good thing for humanity
The kouji ending really pisses me off because it reminds me of death note and how Light dies despite all his effort, so I didn't want that to happen here too lol
The image at 14:45 probably needed censoring. Don't want the hammer to come down on this video.
Yeah, I’m hoping I can avoid it. You never know with UA-cam.

Great video man, but the way you pronounced cacophony was pretty hilarious 😅
That actually a good idea, but since saya not being a human, can hide and escape even in this scenario and fumi apprehended. They will meet in the future, because fumi will definitely sent to a mental hospital.
>high school student
>shows game footage of the MC waking up in his university hospital
yep into the trash this goes, going to watch a different video explaining this game
Be my guest king
I am not a cultist (yet).
never played this visual novel, but i really like your idea of the fumi ending
Really hate that you used higurashi as an example for cutesy anime that hides that it’s horror trope. Higurashi spoilets ahead: Things seeming normal and cute is the point because it’s a psychological horror about the paranoia and inevitable tragedy that develops when you alienate yourself from others when you are suffering rather than trusting your friends and family and asking for help. It’s literally the point for it to be jarring that they turn creepy all of a sudden because they’re putting you in the perspective of the person suffering in the chapter. If anything you could’ve used the plentiful horror magical girl shows that use that trope thoughtlessly ever since the popularity of Madoka which would’ve gone well with this video since it’s an Urobuchi work
Subscribed. Keep being you g 😎
