It is kind of too bad you didn't cover the Cross Days VN more in-depth. I have a rough idea of the story from other YT videos and... other sources... but the game itself never got an official English localization so there are gaps.
The fact that Makoto never considered the concept of “breaking up” at any point in this franchise just tells you what kind of person you’re dealing with before the story does.
about that…im pretty sure that in the cross days visual novel makoto is available as a route. its very much “if its you its okay” type of relationship. apparently its one of the more “happier” endings but id rather that yuuki stay 10 million feet away from him lmao.
@@alsparkproductions7849 I'm pretty sure Makoto legitimately falls in love with Yuki in multiple routes in the visual novel. He gets dumped in all but one of them so ends up depressed and faithful with Kotonoha. I guess that's funny
Yeah it’s a legitimate surprise, I had thought something bad would’ve happened or Roka wouldn’t have been in time to save Yuuki from the train incident.
There's an ending in the Shiny Days vn where Makoto gets the shit beat out of him by a family for sleeping with the dad's two daughters (in the middle of a shrine, mind you)
I watched this anime as a young girl, without any context, searching for a romance anime like all the others. Let me just say, I was SCREAMING at my screen for the girls to stop being so stupid, and I couldn't look away/stop watching. Finished it, hated it, but even today, 10 years later, I still remember it.
How can you hate it when it teaches such valuable life lessons. It shows you what to avoid in a man and what not to do as a woman and what to watch out for in female friends when you have a bf.
I had the same exact experience! I hated Makoto, I hated the girls, I hated the guy friend. Yet I couldn't stop watching. Something about the absolute deviancy of the plot and the depravity of the characters made me unable to stop and very morbidly curious as a young teen
@@myheartwillstopinjoy8142 I especially hated Makoto. I hated him so much that I just wanted to jump into that world AND KILL HIM MYSELF! Sorry, I got a little carried away there
I’m pretty sure it’s heavily implied that Taisuke actually forced himself on Kotonoha and her distraught mental state at that moment made her not stop him
Cross days was a wild ride, I didn't have any idea of its existence but man poor yuki, he was just a normal guy traped in a hentai where he was just a random side character
You know I wouldn't be surprised if Makoto got his mom pregnant. Oh wait, he did. I'm not joking, in Strip Battle Days 2 he did it with his mom and got her pregnant. Now he would have a child/sibling with his mother/lover carrying her child/grandchild
@@antony2206 Oh it can, Makoto's dad is a pedophile and has custody of his daughter, his 5-year-old daughter and incest is not a problem for him either. Like father, like son.
I used to hate the anime, but if you think about it School Days is a Cautionary Tale about what *could* happen if you think with the head between your legs instead of using the head on your shoulders to lead your heart.
Yea I never understood the hate this show got to me this showcases the reality of hookup culture/dating of today: people sleeping around with anybody, cheating, friends hooking up with each other's bfs and fighting over it, this shit is happening out here ofc all the murder is exaggerated but other than that I thought this show was real maybe too real for people lol
I used to think School Days was shock value BS until I began a serious relationship. This stuff really does happen in relationships, the gory stuff happens less - but intrusive thoughts about offing your ex or their new lover is pretty common. School days just shows what happens if someone acted upon those thoughts.
@Faraae exactly, I like to think of this show as showcasing the dark sides of dating and bs that come with finding the one: cheating, hating ass bitches and murder/violence over love
Once the shock factor dissapears, one realizes that the "daysverse" is so over the top, comically fucked up that it cannot be possibly taken seriously. Everyone is either an incest freak, a gang-bang rapist, a murdered or all in one hilarious package. In one novel, Makoto can impregnate either his friends' mothers or even his own mother.
@@novadreamer648 oh yeah, there is a whole universe with others visual novels, makoto and sekai mom are half brothers by the same dad (who personality is like cross days makoto but 10 times worse), making makoto and sekai uncle/niece. double cuz sekai dad is also half brother of makoto, by the same dad. yeah its a huge terrible mess, i hate all "daysverse" stuffcuz no matter what everything is either 1ncest or r*pe stuff
In that case... may I recommend Kunihiko Ikuhara's original anime works? Revolutionary Girl Utena - Mawaru Penguindrum (recently got a 2-part movie compilation, RE:cycle of the Penguindrum) - Yurikuma Arashi - Sarazanmai
You know he got his mom pregnant. I'm not joking, in Strip Battle Days 2 he had sex with his mom and got her pregnant. Now his mom is carrying her child/grandchild.
@@AmmiethystI think it would've been good to kill him and leave her alive just so she can suffer from not getting what she wants (and then prolly killing myself after so she can't vent her anger)
This is the first time I've ever seen someone actually understand the point of school days. There are people out there who are abusive and have toxic attachment styles that result in unhealthy relationships. This is a story about people like that. You're not supposed to like the characters
No it aint this wasn't a planned picasso story where you're supposed to dislike the characters it was a project made by studio 0verflow because they wanted to make a quick buck and said fuck it let's make a good porn and turn it into a dogshit anime because school days is indeed a good porn game but a dogshit anime there is no plot twist it's a dogshit melodrama because the creators wanted a quick buck
Makoto may still be an asshole all around, but in Cross Days it actually works well. It's obvious that he is supposed to be an antagonistic character if not the main antagonist, which he is still. Point being it makes sense for us to hate him and him being written as the scumbag he is. As you said Yuki is a voice of the audience trying to reason with Makoto and actually gives us someone we want to succeed in his goal. Yuki still achieves his goal in protecting someone from Makotos sadisticness, maybe not who he intended in the beginning but he is still a hero. I haven't read the Cross Days manga but with the story being told from you I have enough information for this claim.
I kinda love it because he is only that way because of player choices, and most players obvious choice is to get as many girls as they can. Why would they care about these people? They are just fiction characters to them. But, to someone who lives in this world, his choices would be so so disturbing and they would see him as an asshole
@@alsparkproductions7849 it's quite different from the manga. Depending on the route you take it gets a lot deeper into the Yuu(like)×Makoto thing. Among others.
I love your analysis, but in the VN and the anime, Katsura didn’t “sleep with” Taisuke. He assaulted her because Otome basically told him that being forceful with Katsura would get her to fall for him. If you watched the scene in the VN she is actively saying no and Taisuke is still forcing himself on her while actively telling her that Makoto doesn’t love her anymore. I love your entire analysis, but I just wanted to clear that up.
I was also about to comment this one, thanks! Taisuke took advantage of Kotonoha , so what happened to her was never consensual... :( (but to the creator of the video, good job!)
Moral of the story: don’t cheat. Especially not for something as temporary and almost pointless as s*x. Respect is earned, not granted. Trust is like your head. Sometimes we forget how valuable it really is. And once you start fucking around the wrong way, you lose it.
I may be late to comment on this, but I'd like to say that I absolutely agree with this. In reality, people tend to forget that trust is earned, not granted. Especially after someone has betrayed someone else's trust. Just because you cheated once, doesn't mean your significant other will immediately gain their trust back. That isn't realistic. The fire, the thing that is "trust" is very very difficult to rekindle.
I’m honestly really impressed with with the conclusion of Yuki’s story in Cross Days. Sometimes people are just super unhealthy, and you have to learn to separate yourself from the drama and trying to change things because sometimes, they just don’t want to change. Breaking off to take care of yourself and live your own life away from unneeded problems can be the best option. The end lesson is a really mature theme I haven’t yet seen in any other media, especially anime, and one with ties to an adult romance visual novel at that. I wonder who wrote that story and if they have any other similar works.
the most upsetting thing in the visual novel is the girls getting pregnant and being so unfazed by it as if they are not just high school students lmao
@fifteen she most definitely was not. getting pregnant as a highschool girl literally ends your life. its one of the worst experiences you can go through at that young age. i know i'd kill myself if i got pregnant, though i do already have my own issues in rhe first place anyways
For real though. Unfortunately, that's how it is in real life sometimes. Half of the girls at my old high school were getting pregnant and they didn't even care. Acting it's no big deal. "Uh, hello? You have to dedicate your whole life to raising your kid with no education and no high-paying job!"
I love that in Cross Days, the answer to the question of “What about other students in the school?” Is “Yeah, we have 1000 feet between us and those three hot messes”
What I got from this is that Katsura did nothing wrong and when push come to shove, she is the only one who will spill all the tea exactly as it is, calling out everyone left and right (except Makoto, because reasons.) Katsura is the kind of woman who will read you for filth and I love that of ther.
Makoto deserves more than the bad ending if you ask me, realistically he deserves to see those girls move on and be better and hotter w/o him and to live alone. there are worse slower fates than being killed by a crazy ex.
To be fair he's a blank slate and you're kinda supposed to insert yourself on him considering these endings and different routes. Also that uh everyone is kinda an a-hole in some routes Example: The first manga Makoto is a decent guy everyone else is kinda off but at the same time the worst ending is obviously him being the absolute worst
I just wanted to explain a good reason as to why Makoto wasn't reported for the assault. In Japan, the punishment for sexual assault is a lot lighter compared to most other countries as for the most part from what I've heard depending on which part of Japan you are in, the punishment does not fit the crime. If you were caught sexually harassing or molesting someone, you get arrested and detained for 6 months and get charged for 500,000 yen. Makoto likely wouldn't care too much and his ego still would get in the way.
@@alsparkproductions7849 not really considering in Cross Days it's the harem route meaning they are in an open poly relationship. Makoto is basically manipulating the girls and he pretty much has them under his thumb.
Honestly, Makoto reminds me lot of my ex. He cheated on me from the beginning, convincing my "friends" to sleep with him and an assortment of other girls that either were very easily influenced or had a crush on him. I didn't start to get an idea of what was going on until now my current bf told me and I didn't get to see the full picture until I was told by police, come to find out he cheated on me 24 god damn times but I have a hunch that there might be 4 more. School days hits a little hard for me, honestly this kind of thing is extremely damaging. Sorry for the rant, I just really needed to get it out
Honestly, good on Yuki and Roka for getting away from them and that girl who warned them that they get away from their dirty bussines, Makoto got what he deserved. He never propely broke up, inscalted things to the point of no return.
Had a friend who asked for an anime suggestion, "anything but a dopey romance anime, too predictable". I told him I had the perfect romance anime and there was no way he could predict the ending. Bet a week of lunches on it. A week later I get a text. "WTF dude" The name of the anime was School Days. Those were some tasty lunches.
All this time listening to this I kept thinking “The sex can’t be that good bro” LOL great video. Happy New Years! May you get more subs and recognition!
As someone who’ve seen plenty of sex scenes in the Visual Novel (including Shiny Days), many of them aren’t really good. Most of them have repetitive animation and the pacing can be quite off-putting.
i preferred the Manga the most, loved seeing Makoto actually trying to be a good person. i wouldn't have known about Cross Days if not for this video, but from the overview it sounds like the best overall adaptation. i might read it soon
no matter what version you can't tell me Sekai is the best girl saint 😭 girlie legit kissed the boy she liked after he got into a relationship with another 😭 she deserves all the bad endings 😭
I loved School Days because it did it's job with making me angry. I told people this for years, but everyone laughed. Thank you for making this and making me feel less alone haha
My guy put up with that bastard makoto's BS to help the girl only to end up being called "disgusting" By the same girl , I'm glad he let her go , sometimes you need to abandon people who don't want to change and put all the toxicity behind, yuuki's story is well written , I'm glad they gave him the ending he deserved
From what I'm getting here, the ranking goes like this, from best to worst: 1. Makoto(best routes/visual novel): Made some mistakes, but pulls himself through in the end 2. Makoto(School days manga): Did some fucked up stuff, but owns up to his actions and he works to change his behavior, it's unfortunate things ended up the way they did. Gap 3. Makoto (Visual novel worst routes/anime): An indifferent asshat who deserved everything that came to him Huge gap 4.Makoto(Cross days manga): Downright sociopath who deserves to be in jail.
Yep, the manga is by far the best version as it has Makoto actually grow and develop like a real human being and without all the sex and alternative paths. Amazing what happens when you drop all the superflous stuff.
Cross Days is really interesting because if you think about it, since Makoto is the main antagonist, that means us/you, the player controlling Makoto in the VNs, is the antagonist. How many players of School Days and sequels go into the game thinking “what’s the best route to get a harem?”, EXACTLY what Makoto was doing in Cross Days. He was fine with Yuki joining, fine with “convincing” Rika to join him, fine with Yuki cross dressing and joining, fine with a huge harem all for himself. Sure some players might be thinking they’re “just getting all endings/bang for their buck/playing all the game has to offer”, but when they go down the harem/messed up routes, they’re just being Makoto in the “Days” universe. I’m also very happy Yuki and Roka got out of that mess cause HOOOOO BOYYYYY, they don’t deserve Makoto’s deranged schemes.
No cause when Yuki started getting involved in Makoto and Kotonoha’s little “fling” in the nursery room I was like NO get away from them cause all I see is trauma
Only hearing about the ending, I didn’t realize how in depth the story was with surprisingly more complex characters than I initially thought. Super thankful for this.
You know about reporting Roka's assault in cross days, I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure that would mean (in the japanese legal system, but this is in the US too) she'd have to repeatedly describe the event in excruciating detail to an officer, and then she might not even be believed because sexual assault victims are treated terribly seemingly everywhere. Sexual assault is also apparently really really common in japan especially on trains, like to the point some don't report it because it happens that often. I'm not japanese and I'm only saying what I heard though so go look into it.
Yup, I wouldn't dare go out in public alone if I ever went to Japan. Not only is the experience itself absolutely terrifying, the questioning (per protocol police may reenact the scene with a mannequin and have the victim point out how exactly and where exactly it happened) makes me feel like throwing up. On another notse, Japan's legal system operates under the assumption that the potential assailant is always guilty until proven innocent. Makes me not want to go there even more.
Yeah, you're not wrong. Going to the cops about a sexual assault is hard everywhere, and getting them to actually do anything worth a damn is much harder. But actually engaging with the Japanese justice system is likely on an entirely different level. We're talking about a system with a near 100% conviction rate, which says just as much about what cases actually make it to court as it does about the legitimacy of the trials, run and operated nearly entirely by conservative older men. *I* definitely wouldn't have the balls to do it. People still face criminal charges for filing 'false' sexual assault charges in the west on a regular basis, even if we rarely hear about it. Now imagine most of our cops could remember voting for one or more convicted war criminal and/or sex slave owner; do you think they'd be better or worse to women? Keeping in mind that many of those war crimes were rape on a truly unimaginable scale.
They're fictional characters, the author simply didn't write any motive for them to call the cops. If they did write something for or against it, it would've been touched upon. Though, headcanon is definitely valid for each individual.
Yeah, I lived in Japan for a while and riding the subway there isn’t fun. I told my Japanese friend abt the times I was assaulted and he said “yeah that’s common, maybe just walk next time?”. Whenever I head people talk abt how safe Japan is I scoff.
My very first relationship when I was 16 was with a serial cheater like Makoto. Fucked me up for the rest of my life and this anime triggered me for the longest time. Coming back to it later after years of therapy…it still stings bringing up bad memories but it doesn’t break me like it used to. Thank you for this video, it was a fun watch overall!
Fun fact, School Days is but a part of the larger world that 0verflow has been using for basically all of its games. With that larger world in mind, Itou (and the events of School Days in general) is actually rather tame in comparison, lmao. His father, Tomaru Sawagoe (a prominent character in 0verflow's previous games), has made it so that the vast majority of the cast in all 0verflow games is related to one another. Like shit dawg, Sekai and Kiyoura are technically sisters and cousins at the same time while also being technically Itou's nieces. And going by an adultery chart (yes, that's a thing) that 0verflow released in one of their magazines, they're the ones that Itou ends up having a child with in the future. It's wack as all hell.
I just dont get why Makoto though 🤣 I just researched his father, omg and his mother. Wth. So wrong. I wanted to keep those happy endings for Katsura. Shes the only girl that I liked. That cross days is actually quite interesting in the way that it shows outsiders looking into a route rather than the people involved. Also Katsura doesnt just have sex with his friend, she gets assulted :( poor girl. Was a good indepth video cause I only saw the anime and had no idea of the other materials which make more sense and are far interesting (and less horrible) than the anime.
@@DakotaofRaptors Well I mean she likes Makoto but she knew that Sekai liked him so she let her be with him. But she couldn't hold it in so she kissed him. She knew Makoto was cheating on Sekai so Setsuna offer her body to Makoto if he stayed with Sekai, which he didn't. That was her mistake, oh yeah there was also the part where she never said goodbye to Sekai, she just left.
The editing when Yuki punched Makoto was PERFECT! I legit cheered and clapped when that panel was on screen. It's frustrating that Yuki is so upset at the concept of a poly relationship, but it's undeniable that Makoto is a monster after what he tried to do. This video was so fascinating as someone who's only ever heard of School Days as "that anime with the messed up ending". There's a lot more nuance and even some genuinely good writing it seems. It seems like a fun, cheesy, indulgent time.
a harem where both girls are being manipulated by a selfish dickhead and each would prefer to be monogamous but does this cuz ??? (Dick that good ig?) is something to be upset about tbf. also they're like high schoolers having a first relationship it'd be a mess no matter what
Heres an interesting fact: If you pirate the Cross Days visual novel, the game will publicly expose some of your search history. And you cant really go against it because it was in the game's terms and conditions if you even bothered to read them.
@Island Boy at the moment of installation, it takes a screenshot of your computer, along with the username data, city where the internet connection is present, tand yor search history. Then they upload it to everyone to see. All in the ToS.
She does have some genuinely happy endings though, there's even one where she's went full Gigastacy and seduced Makoto for herself then ending with the couple having a vacation in a private... Boat 😂😂😂😂😂
Same. And actually, i think she is just the only character i really consider a human in those shit series. She is the only one who is originally a good and pure girl, and all the "bad" things stupid people claim she did are the result of her mind getting destroyed, and the fact that this series are mostly no fucking sense and unrealistic. Sometimes i thing she does not fit in this type of hentai game, her creators are just brainless.
I find it super interesting how the manga plays into the master manipulator many players of visual novels become. Yeah, at the start, Makoto is an oblivious kid who is trying his best to deal with the situation at hand with no prior experience. But as the player keeps going, keeps trying options and manipulating their responses to get the desired ending, Makoto becomes a different person entirely. Obviously going for routes in a VN isn’t manipulative, but it’s an interesting way to recontextualize the players behaviors as if they were a person within the universe they chose, especially in the harem ending.
Honestly I loved school days, most magnificent train wreck I've ever seen. And oddly relatable, not as serious of course but I think the story provides a rather realistic depiction of how someone who is naive when it comes to relationships can change when suddenly granted popularity.
i actualy know a person like makoto. he was the type that looked like a decent person on the surface but once you look a little closer it all goes downhill. school days is quite a bit more realistic than people give it credit for. either that or theyve done similar things in their lives and dont want to be reminded of it and therefor hate it.
Pretty sure with Taisuke and Katsura, it was SA. She repeatedly says no (even tho it's a trope where female character in hentai or eroge say no while having sex but still have it and still want it, which already problematic in itself). Other than that, I really like your in-depth recap. I never knew about Cross Days and I like the plot of it. I'm gonna check out the manga. Also ngl, everytime there was a bad ending, I immediately broke out with "KA-NA-SHI-MI WO-"
I don't think that Sekai was lying about being pregnant in the anime. Why would they show us her throwing up and holding her stomach repeatedly with no one around to perform to if she was lying? Katsura is shown to be delusional, and if Sekai was only a few months pregnant, then there wouldn't really be anything for a teenage girl with a saw to find. When Katsura says there's no baby, it's probably because there's literally no baby in the sense of a newborn baby. Again, this is a girl who was having a conversation with Makoto with a dead/powered down phone. Given that Sekai was actually pregnant in various endings of the VN, I think it's clear that she was actually pregnant in the anime too.
Late reply, but I think they just left it ambiguous if Sekai was actually pregnant or not. She refused to take a test, and the nausea and missed periods could just as easily have come from the major stress she was under in the moment. I do think Sekai genuinely believed she was pregnant though, which may have exacerbated her symptoms
My dude, Taisuke forcing himself onto Kotonoha as she repeatedly says "no" isn't her "sleeping with" him. We have another word for that in English and it starts with the letter r.
"The anime is the piece of something much larger." Ah yes, the infamous Kagerou Project/VN syndrom. Also School Days manga was more of a gut-punch to me than the anime. Firstly because I always saw Saoinji as the stable one, but also because Makoto was genuinely trying to be a good person. (Also Yuuki best boy)
@@Nasvectica No I just meant that when you start the Kagerou Project, or an anime based on a VN, you don't always expect things to get as deep/crazy as they can be when you have the full picture. VN territory is the only ground that was left unexplored by the Kagerou Project or Shuuen no Shiori.
@@DisheartthornI'll say that the obligatory femboy is slowly becoming a trope in harem anime/manga as of recently, it probably isn't as common in retro content. It's like a slow progression , take Overflow for example, the older games didn't really have femboy characters, and the idea of sex between two male characters was used as nothing but a joke. Later on however, Cross Days was released, with a crossdresser MC (Yuuki) that has full sex scenes with other male characters, yet still, the game doesn't give you an ending were Makoto and Yuuki become an actual couple, even tho it does give you that option between Yuuki and the female characters. So basically, most of the time, femboy characters aren't taken by the narrative (of a game, manga, anime) as a serious romantic option for other male characters, they do tend to have fanservice scenes and the like, because they're usually there just to tease/satisfy that part of the audience that is into them, but for the narrative to treat them as a serious romantic option is indeed rare, but who knows, maybe in the future it'll be more common, on the same way that their inclusion is becoming more common as well. This is even the case in reverse harems (y'know, a female character surrounded by men) with female characters that look like men becoming more common as well (tho with less pornish undertones, given that reverse harems aren't as porny as regular harems anyway).
That is brutal. Makoto had that dog in him. But dogs get put down. 😬 I heard about the ending of anime way back when and swore never to engage, but this breakdown makes me appreciate the relative realism of it. A young guy like that probably would handle this sudden success with women poorly and leave a trail of broken hearts. I imagine it even happens in real life, though hopefully with fewer decapitations. Great video!
Holy shit, is this video underrated. It's beyond me how this has only about 4,000 views. A video of this quality should have views in the hundreds of thousands at least. Keep it up, man. I hope you make more in-depth videos like this because I'm definitely subscribing.
Hooo, boy. Here's a name I thought I'd never hear again. I admit I never watched the anime, and was more familiar with the VN. And let me say as someone who looked too deep in the abyss of 0verflow's other titles in the series, be glad your not THAT much of a fan. Let's just say you would look at 70% of the characters in a different light afterwards. I kind of wish there were other VN's like this. Having routes that can either be the most heartwarming stories ever that make you cry, to stories that make you scared of talking to anyone ever again. And I'm still impressed how to my knowledge, this is the only series that has scenes being full animated instead of just frames. While a part of me is disappointed that 0verflow as a company decided to just stop doing stuff and just let the money flow, I'm also glad they at least made an impact as big as they did. Great analysis as always.
I didn't actually know that, it's a shame the company stopped making new things. I'm sure they could've worked with some interesting ideas given the right inspiration. I also did catch a glimpse of potential routes in Cross Days, which definitely would've resulted in Yuuki (among others) potentially losing some respect points haha. If School Days really is alone in having these art assets, as well as diverse routes going in both directions, then it's a gem we're lucky to have. Thanks for checking the video out, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
This is why playing SCHOOL DAYS HQ is so much better than watching the anime. You can basically help Makoto behave like an actual human being. You know one with a moral code and kinda feels bad when they do things, that end up hurting people (Unless said people include Sekai, if that's the case, please HURT AWAY!) And more so you can make it blatantly clear that Sekai is the villain. Call me a Kotonoha simp but I legit maxed out Makoto's relationship with her and it legit overshadows Sekai's name.
@@DakotaofRaptors Not sure why there's even a choice. You got Kotonaha, sweet tho shy who's being bullied for no other reason then her existing. Which both makes you feel for her and like her. And then we got Sekai... In the great words of our lord Gigguk "She's a b*tch" Manipulative, hypocritical and just a borderline jackass. It's like making me choose between eating a cupcake and a cup of sh*t. IT'S NOT A CHOICE!
I have the game as well, and to-date I've only played it through once, and I stuck with Kotonoha as well. I guess the "harem" ending is the Holy Grail. I'm somewhat disappointed that the Cross Days VN hasn't been officially localized.
@@J-leaf speaking of Summer Days, I found it weird how Sekai would get pissed at Setsuna if she gets in a relationship with Makoto, but is ok with him and Kotonoha going out in School Days.
Yuuki and Roka’s story was really really interesting! I always wondered what side/background characters think of the drama surrounding the main characters :0
Cross Days felt like two characters that did not belong in this world where the main character Makoto was literally having plot armor at his beck and call basically he was untouchable and no matter how hard our main protagonist AKA side character tried to fix things it wasn't good enough which was definitely surprising and I love the fact that he was smart. It was great to see The Other Side characters just tell them it's not worth it literally we know how this story ends so just go about your lives because this bs will not end well if you continue to get involved. It's literally being in a visual novel while also watching the anime at the same time where you can see that this is wrong in so many levels but you can't really do anything about it which is truly genius in a way if you think clearly on this where all we could do is just walk away which is a good message to those who have a crush on someone and you try so hard to tell them about the warning signs but they continue anyway no matter how toxic the situation is just two later realize that maybe I should have just walked away when I had the chance. I loved how Makoto was literally what we all thought he was a scumbag because cross days literally in my opinion felt like we were seeing his true personality because behind the scenes this felt like his true self.
I stumbled into School Days in my early teens, when I had just found anime streaming sites and was devouring everything with a romance tag. Needless to say, the series' ending REALLY dampened my hunger for more for quite a while. It definitely got under my skin - I still remember it rather vividly. Still shook me watching this video, more than a decade later. I thought the anime just made the strange choice of adapting a visual novel's worst route (a sosiopath run, if you will). I did NOT know it was one of many adaptations.
The expanded universe of the setting is utterly insane since it's revealed that not only are a lot of the characters secretly related through ridiculous levels of inbreeding (Makoto is actually Sekai's uncle), but Makoto's father is even more psychotic since he's not only responsible for why all the characters are all related but he's fathered an entire line by himself by impregnating his own daughters/granddaughter/great-granddaughter within the span of a decade or so.
What I'm very confused by is, why exactly do all these girls fawn over Makoto to the point that they will put their own lives at risk in order to gain his favor. Is he charismatic? Is he magical, in a fourth wall harem protagonist kind of way? I heard one theory being that he has a big penis and that's why?
@@robowisanveithasung6022 but then how does he go from "Total virgin with no girlfriend or friends" to "harem chad" exactly XD I guess he's just... Confident now...?
@@EmpressTiffanyOfBrittany School Days logic! also i'm pretty sure it's because Makoto is good with sexual intercourse, causing girls to want to have sex with him
School Days is one of those strange beasts of curiousity in entertainment, kinda like Twilight. But considerably more in line with stuff like the Hentai “Metamorphosis” (Emergence) or “Berserk”. All of these explore the Darkest parts of our Human Desires, and Social norms. Especially once those normally “Normal” things gets twisted to the point where our curiosity and our sense of reality takes a head-on collision! It’s pretty crazy, but I guess that’s what I noticed from “School Days”, shit goes down, and it’s all because one boy either interested in love, or wants to have sex. But I guess What’s more interesting…is that all these stories have in common is “Choice”. The freedom to choose, but to also see the outcomes of those choices with hardly a positive ending in sight.
@@alsparkproductions7849 I mean I can't speak for Japan but I know a lot of people never report because cops don't care. Tbh, I really wasn’t expecting a threesome in Crossdays. Poor Yuki, he’s the only normal person in that route besides Roka and the supporting characters. Really glad everything worked out for him in the end.
I remember watching this at 5th grade. Mama bought a dvd of it for me and my sister thinking it was like School Rumble, Ouran High School and Yamato Nadeshiko. When the first YABAI scene came, me and my sister was screaming at the top of our lungs and mama came to the rescue, pulling the dvd player plug off the socket. She returned the dvd and got us Toriko.
Video was crazy well delivered. Spoken well, well edited, concise, everything. I had no idea what School Days was about aside from everyone hating it. But this video has shown me one thing for sure, I do not miss being a teenager 💀. Thanks for the video. I'm subscribing now and ready to throw away my day to watch more.
The Cross Days manga really resides with me, the message of trying to convince someone that something they are doing is wrong only to fail, and ending up with just letting them be and minding your own business, that happened with me recently. So me and my friends found out that a teacher at our school (about 35-40) is texting one of our female classmates who is 15. Screenshots were leaked to us, and we found out that they did video chats together, sent pics, and texted each other inappropriate things. The first thing me and my friends thought of was telling the school faculty, but we decided to ask the police on what to do in a situation like this, just to make sure. Turns out that in my country, it's alright as long as they don't meet up and do something together (AKA have intercourse) and then they told that instead, we would be the one charged if we ever show the faculty their texts, because of those leaked screenshots, it was an "invasion" of privacy. We told our parents about this, and they just told us it's none of our business, and when we talked with the girl who was texting the teacher, she answered with the same thing. This still baffles me to this moment, but me and my friends decided it's none of our business and we let it be.
I don’t know where you live, but that doesn’t sound right at all if you’re American. I’ve always been told if you send sexts as someone under 18 it counts as distribution of CP, even if you’re the kid sending it (and it’s much worse if you’re receiving it obviously). Maybe consider sending a tip to the FBI or something. The worst thing that happens is they don’t do anything about it. I just want to say, as an adult myself, you were in the right to tell someone and I don’t give a crap about “invasion of privacy”. Perverts that prey on kids or teens don’t deserve privacy and shouldn’t have it. And I don’t know what the police are smoking, but it is their problem and they should be looking into it. Jesus, it’s amazing how law enforcement is so often completely worthless.
I feel like Makoto is a player character from the visual novel School Days in all pieces of media and his biggest objective is the harem route, but everytime he does it something super screwed up happens during it while both girls just have to suffer through pain and abuse multiple times every single playthrough of the game, to the point that both girls killing him could be seen as them destroying the PC, the player, finally free of their control and manipulation.
School Days convinced me that it's totally okay to be single with cats. They have less drama and stabbiness. (Also you really did it! You said 'Nice Boat!')
This is definitely one of my favourite analyses of School Days. I have been obsessed with the game and anime for a long time and I've always been frustrated about how so many people hate it when I think it is brilliant.
Wait in the School Days Manga... Was Makoto not that bad!? He risked his life and tried to salvage the situation by being with Kotonoha but still being friends with Sekai...
The manga more or less adapted the truest version of his character, that being a normal high school student who grows up while trying to do the right thing. But, we rarely hear about manga Makoto because the other (more mainstream) adaptations went for the worst versions of te character.
So I don’t really comment on things, but I just wanted to say that this is one of favourite videos on UA-cam. You go into a great amount of depth about a topic that hasn’t really been covered without it being pretentious or contrived. It’s a great break down of the series and would love to see you expand more on the other VNs in the ‘Days’ family
This video of you explaining theee different versions of School Days has made me appreciate the series slightly more. I’m just fascinated how three different mediums told completely different stories with the same cast of characters
Nice boat might be obscure now, but it was THE meme back when it happened, similar to smooth cabbage and Haruhi's time loop episodes. Also this series is epitome of fuck around an find out.
She actually does kill him in one ending in Summer Days. While it's not shown, it's heavily implied once Kotonoha finds out her sister is being abused, she kills Makoto with her katana and sets the building they're in on fire.
It's even more messed up that in Shiny days Makoto and Katsura's little sister end up having a relationship and even starts having sex. This kid is like in preschool and Makoto wants her as a lover?! Jeez. Talk about a pedophile.
I had to pause the video to get up fist pumping and whisper yelling BEAT HIS ASS when yuuki decked Makoto. The single most satisfying moment of my life
This is just so fucking good. I was talking to the screen throughout your explanations of the story and all that! Along with the unique perspective on tackling this all together Nice Boat! Now do Berserk lmao
I remember seeing snippets from the anime and knowing how dark it was, but I didn’t know that there mangas! I actually tapped on this video cause of the anime and thought it would be just a deep dive on that, but instead I got an amazing, well thought out commentary on not just the source of the series but on spin-offs and trivia! I’m glad I spent the time to listen to this video. It’s so good I thought this could be a podcast. This was super nice to listen too 👍
The most baffling thing is that Makoto is pretty well adjusted if you consider who his father is. Tomaru Sawagoe is the father of his grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, it just goes on
School Days is so iconic, people still discuss it to this day. I'm not sure people actually hate it, maybe they're just shocked at how it deals with certain subjects and that it doesn't go for a more idealized approach other harem stories might. It's almost works as their parody in some aspects by first addressing how messed up certain situations and plot points in harem VNs are only to crank up the crazy to 11.
You know what would’ve made this good? Having the two girls fight in an shounen style fight at the end. In all seriousness this was a great video. I remember watching it years ago and just being dumbfounded by the idiotic choices of all the characters, but was still entertained. Thanks for the retrospective
Ah yes. I remember being a kid who loved to play this silly little dress up game called School Days on google, one day while searching for it I came across this anime and thought to myself "oh! Maybe this is what the game is based on. I'll watch it!" So anyways rip little me's mental stability.

Makoto is such a pervert, I'm surprised he didn't get mom pregnant, oh wait, he did!
There's also a VN for cross days. I wonder if he gets any actual punishment there.
I kinda love it because he is only that way because of player choices, and most players obvious choice is to get as many girls as they can. Why would they care about these people? They are just fiction characters to them. But, to someone who lives in this world, his choices would be so so disturbing and they would see him as an asshole

All cheaters are unreasonable and delusional. They expect themselves to be treated better from someone who only used them for sex
Moral of the story: If you get someone to cheat on their partner, don't expect faithfulness from them.
Makoto really be spreading all these STDs like nothing

The manga thankfully has no chance of that happening.

What I got from this is that Katsura did nothing wrong and when push come to shove, she is the only one who will spill all the tea exactly as it is, calling out everyone left and right (except Makoto, because reasons.) I just wanted to explain a good reason as to why Makoto wasn't reported for the assault.
I like the part names being “admiring the flower “ then “desiring the flower” and finally “crushing the flower”
Yuki was the most sane one of all the characters. At least that how it seemed until he try to kill himself
Even there I'd argue it's not surprising he got to this point.
Considering the shit he went through to try and help his crush only for her to despise him, I dont blame him
Yuki is still the best character
Still normal. I would've lost it like him
He goes even deeper down the rabbit hole in the VN. Like, way deeper.
Someone said that already but. Would not Makoto girlfriends turn on him after his attempt at cheating.
I know im a random stranger but I can relate as well, I’m happy you’re doing a bit better now💗
Fun fact, School Days is but a part of the larger world that 0verflow has been using for basically all of its games.

She knew Makoto was cheating on Sekai so Setsuna offer her body to Makoto if he stayed with Sekai, which he didn't. That was her mistake, oh yeah there was also the part where she never said goodbye to Sekai, she just left.
honestly if you view school days as a deconstruction or macabre parody of the anime harem genre, its not a bad show.
It’s sort of like a Japanese Heathers?
I really enjoyed the show because it was nice to finally see something unique done with the harem troupe lol.
Plus the emphasis on the shot right before Roka stops Yuki’s suicide attempt.
a harem where both girls are being manipulated by a selfish dickhead and each would prefer to be monogamous but does this cuz ??? (Dick that good ig?) is something to be upset about tbf. also they're like high schoolers having a first relationship it'd be a mess no matter what

@@Nasvectica No I just meant that when you start the Kagerou Project, or an anime based on a VN, you don't always expect things to get as deep/crazy as they can be when you have the full picture.

@@JSmith-pb6fwBoys make the best girls.
Yuuki fighting his dear life for not to end up as the obligatory femboy in Makato's harem 😂
Obligatory Femboy? I must haven't seen enough harem manga then.

You know one with a moral code and kinda feels bad when they do things, that end up hurting people (Unless said people include Sekai, if that's the case, please HURT AWAY!)
And more so you can make it blatantly clear that Sekai is the villain.
Call me a Kotonoha simp but I legit maxed out Makoto's relationship with her and it legit overshadows Sekai's name.
I think many people who playthrough the game for the first time choose Kotonoha
@@DakotaofRaptors Not sure why there's even a choice. You got Kotonaha, sweet tho shy who's being bullied for no other reason then her existing. Which both makes you feel for her and like her.
And then we got Sekai... In the great words of our lord Gigguk "She's a b*tch"
Manipulative, hypocritical and just a borderline jackass.

Yuuki and Roka’s story was really really interesting! I always wondered what side/background characters think of the drama surrounding the main characters :0
Pretty cool take on School Days, you gave a full picture i never knew of the franchise
I don't think the Days games are meant to be in the same verse as the radish vacation.
@@sammykent5752 yes they are sadly. Sekai's mother appears as a heroine in one of the Radish Vacation games

Read it and yeah, Makoto was actually a pretty good guy. If anything, Sekai was even worse there.
The manga more or less adapted the truest version of his character, that being a normal high school student who grows up while trying to do the right thing. But, we rarely hear about manga Makoto because the other (more mainstream) adaptations went for the worst versions of te character.
