Gentlemen, may I respectfully suggest a few “first things” that were not mentioned in the video:
    1. Carefully read - and thoroughly UNDERSTAND - the manufacturer’s instruction manual.
    2. If at all possible, quietly sit down with someone who is experienced and knowledgeable concerning firearms and shooting (a qualified instructor might be best, but a friend, colleague, neighbor or relative who “knows his stuff” would likely be fine) and take time to discuss “how to’s” and “common errors” of firearms.
    3. Internalize and focus on the four basic - and critical - safety principles (I know this was separately covered, but obviously it is VITAL).
    4. Clean/lubricate the firearm, which will provide a somewhat greater understanding of how it operates and will help ensure it works well on the first range trip.
    5. If the weapon is intended for lawful home protection, consider buying a light specifically for that firearm
    6. Finally, buy a good holster and possible an appropriate heavy duty belt; even if you have no intention of carrying the handgun, it may be a real convenience at the range (and eventually elsewhere).

      Up-a-Creek:
Generally. I believe this is very good advice, with one POTENTIALLY SUBSTANTIAL exception. I’m not certain that too many individuals - especially in the “snowflake” world of America in the Twenty-First Century - can actually (to use your terms) “determine” if they are “capable and mentally prepared” as well as the able to deal with the “legal issues” ABSENT REALITY. To illustrate this:
      - Joe determines he can handle shooting another person, but when confronted by a prosecutor who intends to charge him with felonies - after his abortive attempt to protect innocents - he recognizes his initial judgement was faulty.
      - Similarly, Pete determines he can’t handle shooting another person, but when his six year old daughter is being abducted, he - too - recognizes his initial judgement was faulty.
Both of these hypotheticals were faulty because the decision maker really could not fully understand the concomitant ramifications.
Some decade ago, I suggest this sort of determination was simpler; many more individuals had experienced military service, law enforcement and prosecutors were far less driven by “political correctness” (and its public-relations and electoral consequences), and people’s role models tended to be appreciably less equivocal.
I don’t believe there is a universal easy solution to this dilemma. However, I am convinced that the costs - including lifelong guilt - of unpreparedness can be significant.

Only my Maverick 88 shotgun came with a manual... which was my second gun.
My first gun was an AR-15 that I built from parts... none of which came with a manual.
My third gun, a Walther PPQ M2 45 was (allegedly) new and bought from a local dealer... but some of the extra grips, the mag loader and of course the manual were missing.
My fourth gun, a Savage Axis 2 Precision was bought at a gun show from a private seller. It came with a scope, a bipod, and a case, but no manual.
My fifth gun, a DPMS LR-308, was purchased used from an out of town dealer, has an aftermarket handguard, and from the looks of it an aftermarket barrel... but again no manual.
I have been trying to supplement the lack of documentation, by binge watching various UA-cam channels such as Hickok45, Garand Thumb, Brownells Inc., MidwayUSA, CRS Firearms and Kotaboy32 to name a few. I also know a local gunsmith, who helped me with some fitment issues I had with my AR-15 upper.

Any new handgun Disassemble clean and lube. Then fire at least 200 rounds minimum. Fire at least. 100 of defense ammo. Speer gold dot or HST are my go to. Then clean and lube again. Firing that many rounds now may be difficult due to supply

I've been around firearms since the 1980s. I'm a US Army veteran, 4yr MP. Im also a CCW license holder, armed security Mylicensesite.com . My tips; 1) check & inspect the weapon. Make sure it's not damaged or broken from the factory. 2) use a degreaser or cleaning product like Simple Green to strip the gun factory packing grease, lube. 3) read the instructions or firearm owners manual. Know how to clean, oil the gun. Field strip & clean all the parts. Do NOT 🚫 field strip & oil pistol magazines. You can do that if they get super dirty or are carried in bad weather for extended periods. 4) for a new gun: fire 150-250rd of 🏭 factory ammunition. No reloads, no hand loads. 5) clean & oil your weapon with a well made CLP or gun cleaning product: I suggest a simple non toxic product like Froglube 🐸 or Ballistol. MPro7 LPX & Rand CLP are decent too. Avoid harsh chemical gun care systems or fumes. Ballistol is great around the shop or camp 🏕 too. 6) see Handgunlaw.us & learn the gun, use of force laws. A legal aid plan like CCW safe is smart too. ⚖

If you are going to carry you need to practice trigger control (usually fine on centerfire arms except the XD) also frequently attend a range or any safe place to discharge a firearm. Remember it may be a right but you are responsable for every round that leaves the barrel. Stay safe out there and always practice good personal etiquette each one of us is responsible for keeping our right to bear alive.

I have a safe and I do store my guns in it. The point I was trying to make is to teach and educate your kids about gun safety and take them to the range if possible to further teach them hands on.
I taught both my boys at a young age with a 22 rifle just as I was taught as a kid.
When they learn how to safely handle a gun, how it operates, what it’s capable of doing and understand how important it is to practice gun safety at all times it benefits everyone.
In my opinion when you invest the time an effort to educate your kids properly it has a completely different result than just telling them “no” all the time but that’s just me.
It goes without saying you should keep your guns stored safely when you have kids.
If you have a kid that’s been educated about gun safety and taught hands on and you have another kid that’s just been told no which one do you think will be more curious ?
You just can’t go wrong teaching a kid about gun safety even if all of your firearms are in a safe. But everyone has their own opinion and way of doing things I suppose.

Depends on the state for real legal specifics but for the most part no. It is recommended to keep ammo in an airtight or good storage container, remeber the saying "good enough to keep food fresh, good enough for ammo".

I carry my pistol on me 24/7/365+1, or I keep it in reach (sleep and shower). I do see the purpose of these and regular gun safes tho, just another expensive thing to get lol. These are relevant for people who disarm when they are at home, and who have large gun collections. I do good with just 3 for now, none of which need a safe (on me, bedside AK, and survival pack .44 mag)

I am not aware of any handguns that are “automatic.” However, a large range of handguns are semi-automatic: one trigger pull, one shot.
I have to wonder IF you guys use improper terms to just ‘bust balls’ of your viewers to get a reaction? 🤔
Any who. Great videos! Keep up the good work.

    • @TheFlyingZulu

Most older dudes I notice call a semi-auto pistol an "automatic". They refer to a magazine fed semi-auto pistol as an "automatic" because they "automatically" chamber a new round from the magazine when fired... As compared to a revolver that is just usually called a "revolver". At least this is what my dad and grandpa told me when I asked.
