Here’s the conversation they had, “We are going to retire Jimmy Anderson”.
“Why? I thought he was the most successful fast bowler in the history of the game. Is he injured or unfit?”
“Er, no, he’s as fit as a spring chicken”.
“Oh,so he’s no longer taking wickets then”.
“Er,no. He took four in the match”.
“Expensive wickets?”
“Er, no,his economy was as good as or better than the other bowlers”.
“Oh, so he must have been poor as a batter”.
“Er, no, he didn’t have any opportunity with the bat”.
“I’ve got it, it must have been his fielding then. Slow and sloppy was he?”
“Er, no. He ran all over the place and actually saved a few runs through his commitment”.
“What then?”
“He’s too old!”
The conversation they should have had.
“Although Jimmy Anderson is getting old for a fast bowler, because he is the world’s best with 700 wickets, we are going to keep him on for a while longer on a test by test basis”.
“That makes sense as long as he takes wickets, is economical and isn’t a fielding liability”.
“Not only that, he will make another positive contribution as an on the field mentor to the new younger bowlers”.
“Yes you’re right. That’s a great solution”.
