My teacher was mentioning how I have to start planning for college soon and I am the type to plan ahead by a long shot. Also with the math, itll be harder, but also it might be better handled as you will be in a different environment then your hs life. Just think about it, you'll be getting taught by professors. Imagine how smart they were to get to be able to teach a college course. They'll most likely know how to relay information way better than a typical highschool teacher. Meteorology Questions
    I’m 18 years old and literally just graduated from high school (today). My dream career is meteorology. I’ve lived in Oklahoma/Arkansas all my life, my father is a storm chaser and photographer and I’ve been in chases with him for as long as I can remember. I’ve always been passionate about it and even learned how to read most of the different types of radar when I was young. I don’t necessarily want to be a TV Broadcaster like David Payne, I want to study weather and do most of the background things like that.
    Only problem is, I’ve done some research and it sounds like I’m going to need to be advanced with mathematics…one problem, math is my absolute worst skill. I mean I am totally abhorrent at math. I had to bullshit my way through high-school level math and just barely squeaked by with Bs in all of my math courses.
    In all of my other classes I have high As. On my ACT, I have gotten 27+ in all areas besides my math, which ended up being a 17.
    So basically my questions are as followed:
    •What type of math is required?
    •Do I have a chance?
    •Will college slaughter me? (I’m like…really terrible at math
    •Is it even gonna be worth me trying?
    Thanks for reading, I hope you guys get back to me.

    • @MeteoTechWx
      @MeteoTechWx  2 роки тому +1

      Congrats on high school graduation! As someone who also grew up learning weather maps and radars, how to forecast, and going storm chasing with Dad I’ll let you know you’ll most likely ace all your ATMS intro classes and be a bit bored but you’ll impress professors 😅
      As for the math. Not gonna lie it’s a lot. You’ll do calc 1, 2, and 3 and differential equations, and most junior/senior ATMS classes will involve calculus. Broadcast meteorology requires a bit less math but if you want research/forecasting/climatology etc. you’ve got a lot of math ahead of you. I’ve seen people who are terrible at math do well and people who are great at math fail so it really comes down to how much work you are willing to put into it.
      Don’t want to scare you off but ATMS is a pretty difficult, high science major up there with engineering. It’s a lot of sleepless nights, long days going to tutoring in your free time, and camping out in the meteorology department with classmates doing homework. If you’re determined enough to make it in atmospheric science you will - no matter how bad you are at math. If you get two classes in and decide it’s too hard or too much work there’s always minoring in ATMS or going into a similar, less-math major like environmental science! Nothing wrong with that!
      So I guess to answer your questions: All the maths, yes you still have a chance, college kills all ATMS students even those good at math, and if you’re 100% sure you love meteorology and want to be a meteorologist it is absolutely worth trying! (Totally unbiased of course 😉)

    I'm training to become a commercial pilot and we need to learn meteorology in 3 weeks. My instructor told us that if we ever get tired of being a pilot, we can become a weather forecaster/meteorologist. I was wondering if this is true or not. Would you know?

    • @MeteoTechWx
      @MeteoTechWx  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! In order to be an official meteorologist/weather forecaster you would definitely need a 4-year degree in Atmospheric Sciences Meteorology. There are certifications that can start you on that path but a pilots training would not make up for an actual degree. Hope this answers your question

    Hi, so i’m a senior in high school and i am still figuring out what i want to do and i stumbled across this major! I have some questions, would I be able to get a job with just a bachelors in meteorology? Or would I have to do masters and PhD? Are there jobs that are more in office types/labs instead of broadcasts? Thanks for the video!

    • @MeteoTechWx
      @MeteoTechWx  5 років тому +6

      Hi! Yes you can absolutely get a job with just a bachelors degree. Getting an MS or PhD may help you get a job at a place like the National Weather Service which is really competitive to get into, but those higher degrees are definitely not a requirement. And also yes, there are a TON of ATMS/Meteorology jobs outside of broadcast. Most jobs in this field are research based (out in the field and behind desks/in labs) or forecasting based (taking observations from instruments and/or sitting at a desk looking at weather models and typing up forecasts). Hope this helps!

      No problem! Happy to answer any questions you have :) Yes there’s space weather and a ton of other things you can do with Atmospheric Sciences! Having a Masters or PhD would probably help a bunch because those higher level classes would really specialize in space weather. You’ll only touch on the basics of space weather stuff in undergrad. That being said, you could probably still find a job in space weather with only a bachelors, but a higher degree would be really beneficial

    I want to go into Meteorology, but the only thing holding me back is that I will have to take a semester of college Calculus. I never took Calculus is high school, nor has anyone in my family that I know of ever taken it. Any tips?

    • @MeteoTechWx
      @MeteoTechWx  3 роки тому

      Going to college for Meteorology will require you to take Calc 1-3 and, for some concentrations, Differential Equations also. It is a very math heavy major. If math is something you struggle with, there are options like minoring in Meteorology or going into Earth Sciences instead. But if you're okay at math and/or willing to put in the work to understand all the calculus don't let it hold you back from going after a meteorology degree! My best math class advice is to really take your time learning and make sure you understand it otherwise you won't do well in upperclass meteorology courses (classes like Synoptic Meteorology are very Calc and DiffEq heavy). Most universities offer free tutoring if you ever struggle and want help learning!

    Also is Florida Tech or Penn State a good college to go to for this?

    • @MeteoTechWx
      @MeteoTechWx  5 років тому +3

      It all depends on what part of the Atmospheric Science field you want to go into! Penn State is one of the top meteorology schools in the country, but if they don’t focus on the type of atmospheric science that you want definitely don’t just go there for the school name. Getting a job kinda depends on what you want to do as well. I have friends who found their dream job the day after graduation and others who took 2 years to get a job in the field.

    I have a serious question I plan on becoming a meteorologist but I don’t have meteorology as a major at my school so do I major in environmental Science or biology?

    • @MeteoTechWx
      @MeteoTechWx  4 роки тому +1

      Environmental Science would be the next closest thing. A Meteorology major is kinda a mix of some Environmental/Earth Science, lots of Calculus, lots of Physics and a bit of Chemistry and computer programing. No Biology at all. So a major in one of these areas would prepare you best for going on to becoming a meteorologist. To get a job in Meteorology, though, you will most likely need an actual Atmospheric Sciences/Meteorology degree (some places do accept Earth Science majors too). So I would suggest going on to grad school for Meteorology if your school doesn’t offer it now. Hope this helped :)
