- Sonic joined the Smash Bros series starting with Brawl and has evolved quite a bit over the years. Sonic of course comes from the Sonic The Hedgehog Series. He's been in every Smash Bros game from Smash Bros Brawl to Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Have you wondered how much he has evolved throughout the years? Check how how his moveset, animations, graphics, sound clips and much more has evolved! I've also included Sonic's Swimming and Drowning Animation in this video!

Lost world was the First modern Sonic with short quills

I really don't like that they made Sonic's mouth a texture instead of a part of the actual model, it just seems off
Sadly, that same thing happened to many veteran characters, only the new ones and DLC have fully modeled expressions
Captain falcon for example: When you use his taunts in sm4sh, his mouth is like a mask. It's downright creepy

Also, the hell happened to his balancing animation in Ultimate?

I think they should combine Brawl and Ultimate Sonic. I would love to see the expression (especially eyes animation) from brawl and some stuff from Ultimate like taking damage while swimming and drowning. 4 and DS Sonics feels kinda lifeless to me, but I would like to see his Balancing animation.
Also I would like to see an option to change some lines like: Sonic's Speed to You're Too Slow
And maybe some ispirations to other media like for his sleeping animation he would sleep by laying on the ground and put his arms under his head and put one leg on the the other leg. Like in Sonic X.

I'm not even joking, that happened around 2009
Dallas I was born in 02 so to me Griffith is the original sonic voice.
Man, Jason Griffith's Sonic was unique. His taunts were legitimate taunts, his facial expressions were so much better instead of a plastered side mouth. Jason's Sonic died when he left they changed his personality for the new games. I don't care what anyone else says about Brawl. Not the best smash bros for fighting, but it shines brighter than any diamond when it comes to nostalgia and joy.
Brawl’s Sonic was probably the best. He was incredibly expressive, his taunts and voice acting were better (this is coming from someone who loves roger Craig smith’s sonic), and his quills had some bounce to them. They really dropped the ball on his franchise’s inclusion in sm4sh and smash ultimate. They really need to give the sonic games more love. Maybe some more stages that aren’t basically just green hill, some more remixed music, and maybe even a new character.
Why did they change the “you’re too slow!” Taunt? The new one just doesn’t make sense really.
Right.
Ngl the original one was better.
For brawl, Jason Griffith was actually brought in to record lines for sonic specifically for that game. Come smash 4, they just reused voice clips of Roger Craig Smith from Sonic Generations. So they unfortunately couldn’t replicate his exact dialogue from Brawl

It's kinda funny how in some ways, the developers improved the animations in later games, but then also dropped the ball in weird ways, like not retaining his iconic facial expression when he stomps his foot in impatience at the player. He had it in Brawl but doesn't in 4 onwards. They were so rushed/lazy with his attack animations in Brawl yet were able to animate his face surprisingly well...and then just forgot about his face in 4 onwards.
And then there's the fact that they should've done a lot more to diversify his moveset in general.
Oh get this, Sonic's expressions in Brawl is meant to be faithful to his American marketing, were as Smash 4 is meant to be faithful to his Japanese marketing.

@@orangeslash1667 Interesting though if that's the case maybe they'll change in the next smash game after frontiers. Sonic felt more like a shounen protagonist in that game compared to the last decade. It felt more closer to what he used to be like in the 2000s.
I hope they do, the way Sonic seems like now feels so wrong to me. I won't deny that it's still pretty faithful however it's more towards classic Sonic. I don't mind that however it feels wrong to use modern Sonic like this when he's designed to be distinct from classic Sonic.
I'd prefer if he had classic Sonic as an echo, i think it would work much better on him. Sega has treated them almost like separate characters so it wouldnt be too crazy. Classic Sonic still gets games so it wouldn't just be representing the past.
@@lioheart55 Sakurai usually has to reduce Sonic to their less powerful incarnations in order to maintain game balance.
For example there's a reason Sora in Smash bros is reduced to just KH 1 moves, because KH 1 is where Sora was at his most limited. If Sora in Smash had more KH 3 moves, he be broken.
There's also Ridley, to make sure Ridley wouldn't be too big for Smash bros, Sakurai reduced Ridley's size to his NES appearance. However the NES game is also Ridley at his weakest. Which explains why Ridley is one point lighter than Samus.
Just case a character has a lot to work thing, doesn't mean the smash version can have all of that potential.
The reason Ice climbers, Game and Watch don't have this problem is because their not canonically as powerful as Sonic.

Out of all the people in this comment section, I think I'm the only one that actually likes the newer sonic better. AND I GREW UP WITH BRAWL. In fact it is the only one of the of the official Smash games I have played so far.
There's something I've always enjoyed about Modern Sonic's look in games like Sonic Unleashed and Generations, which is what was used in Wii U and Ultimate. The look suits the character well. Sonic is a cartoony character, and it makes sense for him to have a cartoony look. However it still manages to represent his "rad" 90's edge, just not excessively like in Brawl.
Along with that all of Sonic's animations seem generally more fast, snappy and stylized. While fundamentally it's the same move, Sonic will get from keyframe A to keyframe B much faster, which not only allows Sonic's actions to feel much more responsive and better to control, but also obviously represents Sonic's character.
Now, I do still really miss Sonic's expressiveness in Brawl. While I don't really like the centered mouth, he had more expressiveness in Brawl than in Sm4sh. Some of it was brought back in Ultimate, but it still could be better. Another thing is his voice actor. My favorite Sonic voice actor is and always will be Jason Griffith, but it was changed in the main Sonic games and so it had to be changed in Smash.
Even so, I really like Ultimate Sonic more then Brawl Sonic in terms of his visual design and animation. If you like Brawl Sonic better, be my guest. You can have your opinion, this is mine. Just wanted to give my thoughts on the matter.
I agree 99%. Except for voices, I never cared for any of this sonic voices and Im definitely alone in that thought.
People talk about sonic spikes and that its better in brawl because its long and moves around a lot but people need to realize spikes are supposed to be stiff to effectively hurt you.
Also theres complaints about brawl down smash and dash attack being changed from a ball attack (of the thousands sonic already has) to something different and new.
Finnaly, someone understands.
@@lorigayeallen522 Ironic that you're saying this because looking back, I really don't agree with anything I said back then lmao, aside from the snappiness of the animation being better. I honestly prefer the proportions and face of the brawl model significantly more, outside of the centered mouth

@@phiphi2209 Well, also notice how his hate started to disappear around the same year Brawl came out. Jason Griffith finally had respect, but it was too late. Had he sounded just as good when he first started as he did in every subsequent role Brawl onward, he would have never been replaced.
Medachod I actually like Roger for having the most personality...Roger actually feels diverse when he wants too in my opinion
@@blitz4506 In his other roles, yeah. As far as talented voice actors go, Roger has more experience than Ryan and Jason combined and is amazing in all the anime he does. As a general voice actor, the other two don't hold much over him.
However, his tone is fairly the same across all of his roles, which makes him suffer in regard to giving Sonic a tone similar to how the creator wanted. Not that he's necessarily bad.
In regard to which English voice copied SEGA's original vision the best, that would be Ryan. They were both identical to each other in loving the role. Jason came pretty close and perfected it by his last few years.
If I disregard Roger from Sonic as a whole, I can see him as a good Sonic, which is a sad thing to say when I think about it. What I mean by it is that, since Sonic Boom wasn't made in Japan, Roger was the first voice for Boom Sonic and thus, this Sonic was designed with Roger in mind. Similar to the Genie from Aladdin being designed with Robin Williams in mind.
But really, I would have loved to hear how Roger would have voiced Sonic as his first English voice. I wonder what kind of inflection he would have given him back then.
Medachod yeah...I feel like they should try to have Roger in mind because the sega of America workers give the characters more expression. just look at the Twitter takeover or boom.
I love both Ryan and Jason but my only problem with them is that they only show 1-2 sides of sonic. for example Jason should Sonic's mature and understanding side but not his energetic side as much.

@@ericschannel983 PS5: *no you won't*
Joke aside I would really love if nintendo won the next console war.All the time it is Sony destroying competition.A nice change.
If I had to choose a favorite, without a doubt it's Brawl. Definitely
Me too!
Same!
Ultimate is better
@@joannarossi8777 ouch. :')
@@joannarossi8777 I agree with you.
5:25 in Brawl he has physics for his spines, and I find that cool
I never noticed that, but you’re right. That was only done in his debut smash bros game.
I miss the "Now i'll show you!!" Its so cool
If Sonic were in Melee, he would look like his Adventure 2 self and he would be voiced by Ryan Drummond.
What ? I get the Ryan Drummond. But I don't understand what you're trying to say
no it would be adventure 1 take a look at smash 2 sonic
Wait why wasn't Sonic in Melee?
Ryan Drummond is NOT a good voice of Sonic.
Spider-Man {Sonic Parker} and who is?
Official spine flap tier list
S : Brawl
A : Ultimate f4
F : for Wii U
E : for 3DS
9:54 One thing that always bothered me is his victory animation he has a 3D mouth like it's actually animated but the one in-game (or the model on the right) the mouth is textured.
0:02
Already setting expectations low for Sonic's changes throughout the games in the first 2 seconds I see.
Efficient.
smash brawl and 4: sonic swimming
me: wait that illegal
8:43 that's was the real super sonic

That “You’re too slow!” taunt while running in place definitely needs to come back
Brawl!Sonic- the '90s attitude
Smash 4!Sonic- Mr. Smiles
Ultimate!Sonic- not mr. smiles but still slightly cartoon in expression (but I blame that on modern SEGA's vision of the character)
Brawl was his best Look in my case.
That's it, I'm officially modding "You're too slow!" into Ultimate after these updates.
If you aren't crazy, you'll join me.
Not enough (at all)
I'll join you.
Please pase the link when done
When i know how to mod im in

Sorry man. I'm in the Ryan Drummond "Catch me if you can!" Boat.
5:58 come on step it up!
6:00 come on
6:02 come on
9:42 your welcome
What makes me love the your too slow even more in brawl is that when sonic looks at you his left eye drops a little and it is even more funny that way
8:15 Im fine, i can swim like the others
8:36 I CAN'T EVEN SWIM! HELP ME!!!
Sonic cant swim in his games
@@mati28287
Wrong.
He can swim with a life jacket.
@@user-sp2jg9rx8r What Life Jacket????????????
Brawl sonic is everything the character was In The 2000's ( cocky, eccentric, talked a lot, eager)
Ultimate & smash 4 sonic is a more general characterization.
I love the old Sonic's spines it's soo jiggly
Man I miss Jason Griffith
R.I.P. "You're too slow!"
Well,I see Jason was good as Sonic but he is more better as Shadow in my opinion. Also,Kirk Thorton is my second favorite voice actor of Shadow.
I sure hope Jason will reprise as Tom Majors in Chaotic because the show is coming back.

There isn't an *S* at the end of Bolt's name. It's Usain Bolt.
yes there is an s at the end of usain bolts' name
@@placeholder2182 You get points for using an apostrophe correctly. However, there is no *_S_* at the end of his name. Look it up.
i was joking. it was just a joke.
6:34 that looks so creepy.
7:03 when you get a brainfreeze
Is it me or does sonic's mouth in ultimate look like it was drawn with a marker
Looks that way...and he haven't move his mouth while talking from the victory screen.
his mouth is a texture but at least in the Smash 4 victory animations it's actually modelled on but not in Ultimate
@@RedRabbit08 it does move but it hard to see. pause quickly to see
@@abesfunworld9741 Ah,I see what you mean. ( but its way too quickly )
@@RedRabbit08 ikr thanks for understanding i will subscribe
For Sonic's swimming animation it should have been his life jacket from Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games.
I realized how sonic(brawl) spike is rlly fluffy when doing the you're too slow
What this taught me was Sonic's emotions were killed after brawl
Sakurai usually has to reduce characters to their most basic essentials for movesets. The reason, Sonic and especially Kirby are so canonically overpowered that having Sonic and Kirby having everything from their games would make them broken in Smash.
Thats because Kirby, Pac-man, and Sonic have really circler designs. It makes it really easy to simplify Sonic and Kirby compared to everyone else, and only add what is needed.
I prefer Brawl Sonic because he had a better voice actor and his taunt was outstanding. Roger Craig Smith isn't bad but Jason Griffith was more fitting to Sonic. Also "You're too slow" annoyed people before Hero.
not to mention brawl sonic moves naturally and is more expressive
Rog456 Yup.
Yeah, but because off sonic,s you,re to slow, people kept hating sonic and sonic was the less liked character in brawl, so they had to change it.
Brawl sonic was the best one
Indeed, he’s the most expressive and detailed. I don’t know why but it reminds me of sonic world and 06
For expressiveness, Final Smash, and voice, that was Sonic’s best. But his moveset was terrible in Brawl. They made his moveset better in the newer games, but at the cost of losing his expressiveness, nerfing his Final Smash severely, and giving him a new voice most of us don’t like
@@mastercobragaming8780, of course in general, he's much better as a character, but his designs better in brawl
RedAwesomeBatman 5000 his design was the best in Brawl. Shitty moveset. His design got worse in the new games, better moveset. That’s all I’ll say
@@mastercobragaming8780, agreed
I still like brawl sonic more than all of the other sonics.
He felt more fluid and had more emotions and personality. Also his first appearance in smash.
8:25 Sonic is swimming
Hedgehogs actually can swim. Why did SEGA…you know what, never mind.
