What people don't fully appreciate is that it's not about whether or not you can afford it. Even if you can afford it, do you really want to be looked after by a doctor who is capable of dumping a patient in any circumstances? It's about the type of people who will choose to work in the medical field. Just yesterday I was reading about a Polish surgeon Zbigniew Religa who in 1985 conducted a heart transplant which was considered borderline impossible at the time. The surgery took 23 hours, and there is a National Geographic photo showing Religa watching his patient's vital signs after the op, and in the corner you can see one of his colleagues who has fallen asleep on the floor (the surgery was successful, and the patient even outlived Dr Religa). It makes me think, when you take your child to hospital, you want the staff there to be that kind of people. You want them to be capable of working 24 hours if needed to save your child's life, and NOT calculating how much they'd be paid for that and whether or not you have run out of your insurance money yet. If your doctors are calculating businessmen, even if you can afford to pay them, would you really trust them with your life?
You are right. You are not a patient anymore you are a costumer. In my country they are closing some hospitals because they don't make enough profit. The healthcare system is not about health it is about making as much money as possible.
I'm Canadian, but our health care system is going through a similar thing. I don't understand how we were all so PROUD that our medical systems were nothing like the American system, yet we're moving closer and closer to the same kind of system as them.
I have been in health care for years. I can tell anyone it is always money that gives service. I saw what was going on in the nhs and I personally would never want care from it.
Same here, I am severely disabled (totally bedbound, cannot even sit up). All medical care has been denied to me, an operation that could have cured me was refused as I was deemed to be an "undeserving patient" (surgeon's attitude: "you have nothing and nobody, it doesn't matter if you spend the rest of your life in bed"). I have no family or friends and have been rotting in my own filth for the last three years. I am not even middle aged yet...
The Nhs isn't underfunded. 1/6 gdp goes into it. So it's inefficiently managed and hanged our by terrible drugs that don't work. We always hold up the US but this isn't the only option.
New Zealand healthcare is also heading to the same direction as NHS. So sad that politicians care more about how much they can pocket than people they work for.
Greed and narcissism went hand in hand with the people who sold our nhs. Matt Hancock is the kind of politician who plays Xbox at home and believes the delusion of what is inside that game. I mean we saw it right there.
In the UK, lots of people remain occupying hospital beds when they no longer need to be in hospital. They need to go elsewhere, either home with some help, or a care home. The NHS is massively overstretched with long wait times and it's unjustifiable to keep giving hospital beds to people that are ready to be discharged. It's not the NHS' problem where the patients then go. People need to work on their own social network and be willing to employ help if they don't have family or friends who can help. And people simply grow too old, too sickly. How many billions go to lifestyle illnesses/conditions like/related to type 2 diabetes, obesity, smoking, vaping, alcoholism, poor diet, drug use, and luxurious like fertility treatments and new joints for the very old?! The NHS/UK trains thousands of new doctors and nurses every year but many choose to not work in the NHS or even the UK after graduation despite having been trained in part funded by taxpayers. Then the NHS fills up the gaps with staff from third world counties who undoubtedly have a lower level of training and sometimes there's culture and language issues. The NHS should be for the basics, for things you didn't cause yourself, and there should be payment on the spot for GP visits and your should have to pay for missed appointments you didn't cancel in time. The population looks totally different now than when the NHS just started. How many illegals are using it?! How many healthcare tourists come to use it? It's not made for so many people to grow to 80 or even 90+, often suffering from several serious health issues for years if not decades. Nobody pays enough in for all of that.
The OECD? suggested 10 Austerity policies in 2008. New Zealand skited that ( unlike all other countries) the government would enforce all ten of the policies!!

Let me be plain. Patients are often dumped by the families first. This is not the problem for a business. This is a problem for family and family don’t give a rip. People destroyed the fabric of society and flouted their dislike for Christianity and now they want the “government” or hospitals or businesses to nanny them. That’s not their job. It’s funny this does not happen in many Asian countries where family is generations under one roof and some countries where the family comes to hospital and does all their basic care til they go home. Many patients in the US never get a visit from family.
I’ll also say when you open your gates to the great unwashed then the resources slim down even more. Simple mathematics. Where do folks think the money is coming from? If people want to make a profit providing care that’s their right, same as everyone who works a job or sells a house tries to make profit not provide charity
Asia is full of poverty and you have to pay moore relative to your income for healthcare, and no, your family won't necessarily take care of you either, they have jobs and school too, and hospitals have limited visiting hours everywhere. China for example seems to have the worst of both worlds: high taxes, but no free healthcare, crowding and bad service.
@@lisatowe778one day ypu may be vulnerable and unable to work. Your family may not have the expertise or time to care for you. To make profit you ate forced to reduce staff numbers and training which impacts quality of care which can result in neglect and even premature death.
