WWF No Way Out of Texas (renamed "WWF No Way Out") took place in Houston, Texas on February 15th 1998. Serving as the final pay per view before WrestleMania XIV, No Way Out's scheduled main event featured an 8 man tag pitting D-Generation X & The New Age Outlaws vs Stone Cold Steve Austin, Cactus Jack, Chainsaw Charlie and Owen Hart.
On the WWF's Shotgun Saturday Night & Superstars television shows, it was revealed that Shawn Michaels sustained an injury while training and it was likely that Shawn wouldn't be competing at the pay per view. Fans would end up getting a replacement for HBK during the main event.
Other matches at the PPV include Kane vs Vader, The Nation of Domination vs Ken Shamrock, Ahmed Johnson and the D.O.A, and Jeff Jarrett defends his NWA North American Championship against Bradshaw.

Getting Savio Vega to fill in for Shawn Michaels would be like getting Conrad Thompson to fill in for an episode of Reliving the War on Wrestling Bios.
Or trying to get Brian to fill in
Or The Meltz
or Vince Russo lol
@@mongomongo7664 Russo would say bro I came up with all those ideas
Get cornet and last so they can just poop on everything
That Steve Blackman fake out had me crying🤣🤣🤣
Austin throwing the trashcan will never get old ever 🤣🤣
It was just so hilarious by how he threw it.
I had to turn that into a gif 😂😂😂
When WWF had their commercial advertising the home video collection for 1998 the trash can spot was like the first clip they showed on the commercial. It has lived rent free in my head ever since
I thought about how funny it was in the actual video that the camera was focused on Austin, Owen and Cactus' corner while JR talks about Austin and Owen being in the same corner as Austin throws the trashcan, but then it cuts to a replay showing us that Austin was throwing it at Billy
Came out of nowhere lol
20:44 Credit to Kane for the quick check on Vader after the Tombstone.
Nice professional touch.
Kane checks on Vader's safety with a wrench to the dome piece
As a WCW fan during this era, most of the WWF stuff is new to me. I actually popped when you showed Steve Mufuggin Blackman lol. Cruel man, cruel 😂😂😂
I was a WCW fan…and I remember ordering this ppv by mistake trying to order the WCW ppv got me back into it then after wm14 I would watch WCW first hour then at 8 I was watching raw is war lol
Then they didn’t have sable in WCW lol
Lol I only discovered wcw in 1998.
The Steve Blackmon bit might be one of the greatest things on UA-cam. Thank you, sir
... that Steve Blackman tease was the coldest betrayal of all time
He was willing to sacrifice (our feelings)
Cold as ice
The effort you put into these videos is unmatched. Period. Thank you for doing this series for us!
Seriously.
Double Period.
Well said. He's awesome and the running jokes are great.
He has editors ..
Austin: Hey Billy
Billy Gunn: What?
Thonk 😂😂
Vader's downfall in the WWF through the rest of 1998 is sharp and rather hard to watch near the end.
wait for over the edge
@@RGF91 wait until Edge goes over
@@kidneystonermusic Well that mightve been a smart decision in hindsight.
It was very unfortunate. As much as I love Shawn, he started the domino effect at Summerslam 96.
@@kidneystonermusic edge wait over until
The only true gang war match would be: the entire roster vs. Mufuggin' Steve Blackman (and the whole locker room is still outnumbered)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta love it when Pantera gets involved
27:45 I went to a house show a couple weeks after this. HHH vs Stone Cold main event; after HHH took a stunner, Chyna tried to interfere and took a stunner herself; Stone Cold then pinned HHH for the win. It was a pretty kickass finish for a house show.
I love your Pantera skit it makes me laugh every time
🤣 word
At this same time a year earlier imagine a PPV main evented by Savio Vega, blue blood Hunter Hearst Hemsley, the real double J Jesse James and Smoking Guns Billy Gunn. Goes to show how much changed in a year.
I really enjoyed the Kane-Vader match. Had a big fight feel.
I always considered the Vader and Kane match a passing of the torch moment. Vader had been the giant heel for a little while before Kane and this was him passing the torch to Kane.
The more I hear about the build-up and lead up to WrestleMania 14 & the behind the scenes drama, the more I'd love to see a full fleshed out 2 hour documentary on it.
The behind the scenes of Shawn injuring his back, the drama with Bret, transitioning to Austin, Tyson, Shawn not willing to do the job, triple H's involvement, I'd like to think this is a super interesting story.
The Titan books by James Dixon may interest you; Titan Sinking and Titan Shattered were about the WWF in '95 and '96 but Titan Screwed covers '97 and the early part of '98 with it ending at Wrestlemania 14 (I recommend all the books, even if some bits are a little redundant, presumably for the benefit of people who only read the 1 book).
@@tempestfennac9687 Thanks dude!! Great recommendations
@@DARC-87 You're welcome. :) Hopefully you'll enjoy them if you read them.
Stone Cold throwing the trash can will always get a laugh.
D'Lo Brown was so underrated!
He could have used a better gimmick, he was so bland. I agree he had a lot of talent!
And to think Bischoff thought Austin would never get over with his black trunks and boots, boy was he wrong
I marked out to Blackman as the replacement thinking “Yeah they booked him pretty strong back then, makes sense.” …Before being let down by the wet fart of Savio Vega.
Ya got me good mate.
That’s where that Rock eye rolling gif/meme came from😂,, also thank you for the upload, one of the least things I can enjoy while mentally goin thru it
Well Steve Blackman was the original replacement but monsters attacked Texas right before the match so he had to take care of business.
I think Brian Christopher being the mystery opponent would've made most sense, cocky lightweight heels between him and a younger Shawn could've been made. Jarrett v Bradshaw should've had a conclusive finish at least, great match move for move but probably like the whole angle had the bosses dumping on it.
100% I actually forgot just how good he was at this time. He was a natural born heel, great in the ring, great on the mic, and so easy to hate.
Having never seen this PPV before the Steve Blackman theme legit tricked me lol. I was pumped for a second.
I have to say this… the backstage segment with HHH looking tired… Chyna is such a presence. I mean, she completely demands the camera. Just her look, her heir of confidence, her cold glare… you did NOT want a piece of her. she was such a star. It’s something that it took this long to realize that. Reliving the war is a godsend.
Chyna is the only reason people paid attention to HHH until DX.
Do you recon the same “screen presence” is there during “One Night In Chyna” or is this a onscreen during her wrestling role only type deal?
HHH owes a lot to Chyna. She legitimized him. She made people pay attention to him.
I honestly do not remember Mero and Golddust as a tag team AT ALL even though I was watching this stuff way back when. I'm honestly still surprised it was even a thing.
I got SO HYPED for Blackman replacing Shawn at the end there. I was rocking out to the theme. You destroyed me yo.
They should have used X-pac as Shawn’s replacement.
Woulda been great but I think he was legit injured
He was injured in addition to still being under contract with wcw.
I remember owning a Stone Cold VHS Tape and it was his rise to The WWF Title and I remember they showed Highlights of this Main Event and I got goosebumps just watching the action and the Crowd.
I own the same one
"Terry Funk and Cactus Jack take a break from playing CSGO" LMAO those laptops
Those bricks prob had 256mb HD xD
The spot with Austin throwing the bin at Billy Gunn always makes me laugh, it's just spot on.
It would have been interesting seeing Shawn Michaels take part in the main event and see what he would have done with Stone Cold. It’s a shame that he got injured at the Royal Rumble.
I would have Shawn pin Austin on this show after some shenanigans.......use that to lead into Mania
@DJDoubleCee also would have been cool to see the Outlaws team with Shawn. They didn’t join DX until he left.
@@butt5ful That would have been really cool to see.
I agree its a damn shame that Shawn Michaels Injured his Back trying to lift his fanny pack... just terrible.
There was no way Austin was gonna lose much less in Texas .....not at this time
This was the best era right here. A nice mash up of 90s grunge and old school southern wrestling, jam packed full of tough mfers giving it their all.
love your vids u deserve so much more subs its unbelievable
Most underrated channel on UA-cam.
The Thumbnail Version of Kane will always be My Favourite in the WWF/E ….. 🔥
bit of trivia: This was the last PPV to use the "In Your House" logo
and it's the 1st time we see the wwf attitude shirt
I was wondering how long they used the "in your house" thing. I got started in WWF in late 98 so when I would go back and kept seeing the "in your house" logo, I'd make the mistake of thinking it was some review vid and not the ppv. Took me awhile to realize how many great ppv matches I was missing.
@@zacharyscott6779 The "In Your House" name would still be used for all of 1998 & would finally get dropped after St. Valentine's Day Massacre in early 1999. Backlash 1999 was even originally planned to be an IYH event, but wound up being the first post-IYH PPV.
I noticed on the apron one of the side banners or skirts facing the entrance was ripped in half.
@@TruckerJenkins82 they should have dropped it after this event. Example instead of unforgiven in your house it's just Unforgiven.
I'd literally just gotten back into wrestling after more than a decade away with Royal Rumble 1998 the previous month so I have fond memories of this PPV
I was almost front row for this event. The Stone Cold pop was in full effect.
Also big pops: Vader (big pop) and oddly enough, Kane (he was such a badass then, you had to respect him).. Also Rocky for that pre-match Nation interview and eye roll.. Everyone had a notion he was going to be big soon just based on how much he was changing in a short period)
BIGGEST DISSAPOINTMENT : Savio Vega (Big Boos for the choice of replacement given the others on the teams).
Kane fluidly hopping to the top rope like he was RVD, Vader doing amazing moonsaults, these are the sort of big men wrestlers I miss seeing. Look legit, feel real, and know when to do big spots.
You clearly haven't seen Jacob Fatu have you? Big man who moves fast.
@@zemox2534 Big? Maybe bigger then average, but you cannot compare him with Kane or Vader....
I am reminded of the 1994 Survivor Series where Shawn basically spent the entire match on the apron, drawing nuclear heel heat. I kind of wish he had done the same thing here, with Austin trying like heck to get his hands on him... But he will have to wait until Wrestlemania!
I agree with this.
When you put on Steve Blackman I was like wait was I drunk every time I ever heard about this PPV
Thank you brother for doing these videos. Just went through hurricane Ian in Florida. Watching these episodes is helping.
I was genuinely excited for Steve 'Mu-Fuggin' Blackman. Now I'm sad.
So glad you talked about that trash can throw. The pop was amazing and I remember rewinding that so many times. Great video.
The rocks eye roll had become such a Legendary GIF Online
I think, picking Savio Vega as a replacement for Shawn Michaels was not a popular decision, but the "logic" decision, as he had been some connections to the DX due to the fact that DX paid Los Boricuas a few times before for help. Since I like it when a decision is logic, so I liked this decision.
Great review again. It is always fun watching your videos. Keep going on.
Yep, and in a business sense... Let's face it, people had already paid for their tickets and PPV feed. They didn't NEED to provide a spectacular surprise, as shallow as it sounds. lol
@@toptenguy1 As long as it is worth while np
yup and he also had a rivalry with Austin early in Austins run so it made sense in that respect too.
I thought the obvious choice was Chyna.
Had HBK been active we would have gotten a preview of the DX army damn near a month early
7:33 I laughed way too hard at that. The screenshots you used fit perfectly & made it that much funnier, well done!
For some reason I've been looking forward to this ppv since you started doing them in the timeline, I don't know why, it's just such an oddity for me. From here on out every WWE ppv is memorable, and this gets completely forgotten.
I have odd favourite ppvs too like No Mercy 2002. Not very talked about but I loved the stage and the card
Welcome to reliving the chinlocks
This was my first ever PPV on VHS. As a kid I'd look at the cover (Kane fully masked) and wonder what was underneath the mask! Must have watched this SO SO many times as a kid, good lord looking back it was so so average!
One of my favorite ppvs of all time I still remember it like yesterday. As for the replacement for Shawn Michaels I remember being so disappointed it was like a wet fart that didn't get over
Okk i fell for the Steve Blackman part. I really thought he was going to wrestle 😂
The Pantera music sting is so good
I remember as a young un being bigly behind Vader and really thinking he could pull it off, heart ruling head haha.
Not even past the Intro and I already had to keep replaying Austin from the corner throwing that trash can at Gunn love it
Man, as a kid, I didnt see the Lawlers, but as an adult, that's a spitting image lol
Off the cuff theory why Savio Vega was chosen: Safest worker.
HHH just got off the injury list, Austin has had neck issues, and HBK was probably 50/50 at the time on whether he could go at Wrestlemania. Mix in two hardcore legends that will work until they're hamburger and the Outlaws who probably didn't know how to do hardcore as safe as Mick and Terry. And then there was Owen who probably done as many hardcore matches in his career as he could count on one hand. The Rock still threw chair-shots like the one he done on Shamrock the week following: stiff. Wasn't worth throwing out a WM main event or putting some of the top draws out of action.
Savio was the probably the safest choice amongst Austin, Mick, Terry, and Owen. That barb wire spot with Mick only proved that.
Yup. Owen was coming off that stretch where he broke Austin's neck and concussed Vader, too. Savio was always a very reliable hand
@@RobJaskula I will say that teasing a "mystery opponent" before and through out the PPV with no payout was a skeevy thing to do. It didn't do Savio any favors despite being in the main event.
You know who I would've put in the main event? Sid. He was out of contract at the time and had a previous connection with HBK, and on top of that he was a main eventer and it would've gotten a huge pop.
Yoooo now there's an idea! February is hardly softball season, too
The Rocks antics during the promo killed me when i was 12 and they still make me laugh now
r.i.p terry funk
The pop when Austin got that hot tag was amazing.
Man… you really had me thinking Steve Blackman was the actual replacement lol I wasn’t as big a fan of Blackman back in the day but @wrestlingbios has really made me change my mind 😅🤷🏼♂️
The little Pantera gag makes me laugh every time. Shame I'm assuming he disappeared soon after this.
This was his last WWF appearance on a major show. He worked a handful of matches for the short-lived WWF Super Astros, & he had one match on Shotgun Saturday Night in March of 1998, but that’s all there was for Pantera after this PPV, sadly.
JRs commentary at the end of the main event was legendary
I remember thinking The Rock was going to be the mystery partner, partly because of his history with Austin and partly because he seemed like someone Shawn would have signed off on -- a young, cocky, talented superstar that happened to get booed like crazy.
This PPV Was Awesome And so was this PPV Review
Omfg can u please drop the Steve black man single that song is fire your as cold as ice love it
Who else would've been a good replacement at this time? Chyna would've been excellent. Never had a match before at this stage. Would've been a good hook to buy the PPV. X-Pac was weeks away from showing up. Maybe even a still-protected Kurrgan?!
'98/'99 is peak Kane for me, he was still cool when the 2000's came knocking but making him unmask completely killed what was left of the mystique for me
Next time Ahmed shows up will be in 2 years time when he emerges on WCW as Big T.
Austin/Chyna at the end of the match always gets to me. Chyna was bold for flipping off Austin! And took that stunner like a champ! 🤣🤣🤣
I actually remembered this from watching it back when I was a kid. The things most memorable to me were the wrench shot on Vader, Savio being in the main, and that trash can shot on Billy Gunn. I specifically remember recording this to VHS and rewinding and rewatching that trash can shot.
I remember this PPV but you made me question my own memory with that Steve Blackman tease, lmao.
Awesome to go along with some WWE 2k22 gaming 😁 Thank you for the hard work you put into every video
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5star video!
This show is never 1 star less!
What exactly is "non-sanctioned" supposed to mean? And if the match wasn't sanctioned by the WWF then why are they appointing a 4th member to replace HBK?
I’d guess it’s “non-sanctioned” to mean the match was “no disqualification”. It’s a stupid mixup, but it seems like they meant to say the match was not going to follow the WWF rulebook. That also explains why the WWF would have to appoint a 4th member.
WWF no way out 98 was awesome ppv event 👍
This crowd were unbelievably behind Stone Cold it was insane being there live:)
I was there live as a 12 year old. My brother's had a camera to only take pictures. We did not have camera phones yet in the 90s.
These videos are cool thanks for sharing these memories
They should've just put Chyna in as Shawn's replacement. She was always talked about as the 9th wonder of the world, and even her squaring up against Austin at the end showed that they were fine putting her in the ring. Would've been better than Savio Vega. :/
I remember being so disappointed when I found out that HBK wasn't going to be involved... little did I know that the next time I saw him put on his wrestling boots would be the last time for the next 4 plus years.
Great work home look forward to this every Thursday
With all the "no man is good enough" talk, I was expecting Chyna to replace HBK.
Love having notifications on for this channel🎉
I just love the fact he hypes up the Shawn Michaels replacement that’s why I love your videos man (what a jam up guy)
One of my favourite PPVs. Love the atmosphere of this one.
Me too. Most reviewers don't hold it in high regard. I love it, Had it on VHS and loved watching it
When he says Pantera all I think is "Cowboys From Hell!"
This ppv would've meant more if they'd just booked the nwa angle with any level of effort. 3 factions they could have ripped through before a pay off loss to dx....annoying because all three of those factions just faded away :/ lazy lazy booking
I dont know if you or anyone will see this but I just want to say the limited time I was able to get signal after Hurricane Ian I was able to keep up with the series. It was a nice distraction from everything and a bit normalcy during an unnormal time. Thanks for keeping up with uploads!!!
My first ever PPV that I attended !!!!! Amazing experience
Looking back now we sure did get screwed on the main event !!! But those days wwe events were amazing regardless!
Seeing prime Kane and Austin was epic!!!
Shawn Michael's barely finished his Wrestlemania match with Austin. He couldn't perform that night because his back was in serious pain.
@@hectorlopez1069 yup I know … that doesn’t change the fact of what the main event was
I never saw this PPV but when Savio Vega came out as HBK replacement, I had to stop the video and removed myself from the room. 😭😭😭😭🤣🤣. This is exactly what Bischoff was referring to bout Austin. "Big fish in a small pond".. lol. They really didn't have anyone else to b honest, but boy did business picked up in the upcoming month after this.

Best channel on UA-cam.
Agree💯
It was the second pay per view to be held in Houston, since the royal rumble of 1989.
Man, that Savio thing was one of the biggest letdowns ever. I remember hoping it would be Hall, Nash, or Syxx and got extra amped when we saw Hunter on the phone. Luckily we did get the one of the three not long after, to make up for the big letdown.
Thanks Ryan always brilliant
