I disagree with the part of "the why not being strong enough or secretly you don't want the thing after all". Sometimes, unconsciously, you might feel like you don't deserve to achieve what you want and then you'll make everything to sabotage yourself. Your mind can be your best friend or your worse enemy.

@@lucianoalmeida3249 Wrong. I had depression for a long tine since high school and even though it can sometimes take its time, I eventually had to come to my senses and JUST DO IT. Now, I'm doing the most I've ever done, one step at a time. People can achieve what they work for as long as they have a reason to do it like Cole says. If that "why" takes a while to get to you because of your depression, that's totally fine. But be weary that our time on this earth is limited, and we only have so much time to accomplish something with our lives. I'd recommend trying to tackle the depression as much as possible, maybe evn embrace it and just find the motivation to do the thing you must. There's nothing that's actually stopping you. Heres something from David Goggins that has always stuck with me "You have to keep working hard, climbing mountains. Once you get to the top of that mountain, you throw yourself back down. You cannot stay content with what you've achieved, you have to reach the top of your mountains, and throw yourself back down".
Basically, it's easy to start slacking once your reach a goal or do something, but once you achieve what you wanted, aim higher, do not be content. I did this with my weight loss, running, exercise. Yeah i lost 50lbs in 5 months, but that isn't all i wanted, and what i needed. I still need to lose 50 more lbs, do not lose your fire.

There's a limit to everything. Congrats on losing weight my dude. But remember it's about your health. You can become underweight and even die. You can't get to single digit bodyfat and say "I want to lose 50 more pounds". Find a healthy weight and stay with it. Turn your head to athletic goals. You like hiking? Climb a literal bigger mountain. You like running? train to run longer. You like lifting? Aim to lift heavier. But don't equate fat as a bad thing. WIthout it we wouldn't have a life to be able to reach our goals. It's about balance

In Highschool I excelled without even trying not because I was a "gifted" student but because I found enjoyment in what came with highschool, which was seeing my friends everyday, talking to them in class, lunch, and after school either videos games or hanging out. Find the enjoyment in what you are doing, because that is the secret to success and motivation. Discipline is the vehicle, motivation are the pedals, enjoyment is the foot hitting the acceleration!

    Video Points:
    1. Have a concrete goal (he uses example of creating YT videos, when he doesn't feel like editing he remembers that he has to in order to get to his goal of providing a sufficient income for him to live completey off if YT and live anywhere)
    2. Need to have a deadline (creates sense of urgency and doesn't allow you to procrastinate
    3. Do You Really Want This? - when after applying the previous points you still have no desire ir will to do whatever task you originally set out to get done. Self evaluate if what you are doing is something you actually want to do. Maybe you think it is but really it's a projection someone else out on you or its the fulfillment of someone else's desire of you. Be true to yourself, because motivation fades. Discipline doesn't.

I’ve been been on self improvement for about 10 years, I did my best to give myself the best reason possible to do something, I’ve tried giving myself simple steps, I tried scheduling it and preparing my mind beforehand, I don’t really have anything I am interested in anymore, which is weird because I am autistic and having a special interest is synonymous with autism. I am starting to believe that maintaining discipline is nearly impossible for more than 4 days. I know I should try to maintain some sort of success for my families future but I’ve tried a million times over and haven’t gotten anywhere. If there is a true path to being disciplined, I would definitely have a go at it.

Your reason “why” is the same as motivation in the sense it comes and goes. Once accomplish your “why”, you lose steam. Its about building good habits. “A reason why” and “motivation” or essentially the same. It’s discipline in keeping good habits for your own well being. That’s why we get an empty feeling after achieving a goal. We are left with “now what do i do? What is next?”

How Self-Motivation or Self-Control can derived from the simple act of resting, an explanation and procedure from basic affective neuroscience
The neuroscience of rest is generally omitted in the psychology of motivation, but its neurology is arguably key to our capacity for self-motivation and a sense of purpose and positive feeling or happiness. This can easily be explained neurologically and demonstrated procedurally.
Rest, or the generalized inactivity of the covert musculature, is simple to describe as a somatic or bodily state, but is much more complex as a neurologic state. For one thing, it is pleasurable. The reduction of perseverative cognition (worry, regret, distraction) through meditation, eyes closed rest, or just walking on a beach thinking of nothing gives the musculature the time to completely relax, and this state of persistent or profound relaxation elicits a state of pleasure or mild euphoria due to the concomitant and sustained elicitation of endogenous opioids (or endorphins) in the brain. The sustained increase of endogenous opioids also down regulates opioid receptors, and thus inhibits the salience or reward value of other substances (food, alcohol, drugs) that otherwise increase opioid levels, and therefore reduces cravings. Profound relaxation also mitigates our sensitivity to pain and inhibits tension. In this way, relaxation causes pleasure, enhances self-control, counteracts and inhibits stress, reduces pain, and provides for a feeling of satisfaction and equanimity that is the hallmark of the so-called meditative state.
However, pleasure from a neurologic viewpoint is not a simple thing. Groups of opioid neurons or ‘nuclei’ populate a tiny region of the neural real estate in the midbrain, and as ‘hot spots’ are collectively no larger than the eraser on a pencil. Yet they are highly sensitive to inputs from different sources in the brain. One of the primary inputs come from dopaminergic neurons, whose nuclei are adjacent to opioid neurons. The axons for dopaminergic neurons project from the midbrain to the cortex, and dopamine systems are highly sensitive to cortically processed information, namely novel and positive act-outcome expectancies or surprises that populate our days. Dopamine is a neuromodulator, or a type of neurotransmitter that activates arrays of neurons in the cortex, and is responsible for learning and motivation. Dopamine induces attentive arousal, but not pleasure, but it can indirectly increase pleasure if it occurs concurrently with the co-activation of opioid systems. For example, eat a very tasty treat, and dopamine activity will increase as you snap to attention in response to the pleasure. Conversely, the florid description of a bottle of wine will make the wine taste better because of an increase in dopaminergic activity that in turn increases opioid levels in the brain (this is also the mechanism behind the placebo effect where positive expectations change affect). In sum, opioid and dopamine systems are synergistic, and if concurrently activated will co-activate each other.
So what does this have to do with resting and motivation?
Since resting protocols (e.g. mindfulness, eyes closed rest, meditation) induces opioid activity, that activity will be accentuated if an individual concurrently and persistently thinks of and pursues meaningful behavior (meaning will be defined as thinking of or doing actions that have branching novel positive implications, or a variant of positive thinking). Since meaningful behavior induces dopamine release, this establishes a ‘virtuous’ neurological circuit, when rest can be merged with meaning and lead to pleasurably aroused states or even ecstasy. We can infer these processes from variants of meditation such as ‘loving kindness’ meditation and savoring, as well as peak and ‘flow’ experiences where highly meaningful activity is coupled with non-stressed or resting states. Above all, meaningful behavior is productive behavior that has positive novel and unfolding implications, and when associated with positive affect from rest, can become in a sense ‘autotelic’ or rewarding in itself, allowing us to control our behavior through self-induced positive affect. By coming to terms with the neurologic reality of relaxation, we can realize it’s possibilities as essential to daily life and to self-control that make life worthwhile, pleasurable, productive, and ‘happy’,

I think the biggest challenge to stay disciplined is that you're forced to do negative things by society. So we don't want to do them, and think we're un-disciplined when we "give up". The solution I think is that we simply do what we want basically, with no fear of death, and when it gets hard, that's when discipline kicks in. Why be a superstar if you simply want to lie in bed all day? So long as we do what is ethically right noone can blame us for our actions

Setting deadlines for yourself is really helpful. For example say:" i want to lose x amount of weight before x-y-2021." Its already helping me out, i put it in google calendar (knowing how to use google calendar is like knowing how to use a standard agenda but on steroids). I get notifications everyday of activities i should be doing, and i can carefully plan out my day to make it most efficiënt as possible. Too bad i'm a master procrastinator at heart, when i get a notification saying "go study" i tend to ignore it lol.

What makes me go nuts and throw it all away is that everytime I try to do something or plan something for my future, a bunch of things come into my mind... and I'm not talking about fears I talk about other things I should do. for example... I feel like I need a masters degree (I'm a 23 yo guy) because of financial security, and also I feel pressured to do so if I want to leave my country behind and have a better job somewhere else and secure my future. But it will take a bunch of time for me to get a masters degree cause we're talking about scholarships application then university application then after the masters degree i must stay at my homecountry for 2 years etc and the whole process will steal 4 to 5 years of my life. I just wanna move out to another country , live in a decent house, work for myself 2 - 4 hours a day, have a lot of free time to focus on things I want to do for myself, earn at least 10k a month, and thats pretty much it actually 🤣 (then finally start looking for a romantic partner and maybe lose my virginity🙇‍♂️ but that's for another plan), but I know that may take longer to achieve if I take the master degree/scholarship path😑 I will be on my 30s when I finally get there (if I even make it)

Btw, something that came to my mind while watching this video is that there are deadlines you can't control. Maybe its easier to be disciplined at school when you know your grades will lead you to good universities... cause you have a deadline (you exactly know when you are finishing school). But in real life you cant be sure of how many subs or views you will get this year and thats the difficult part, you never know when. There's a deadline you can't control. You don't know when you're going to get that promotion, you just keep working and working without knowing when exactly you're going to get there. And that's for me the thing that makes discipline so hard. No matter how many whys you have, you cant control a lot of things

The biggest obstacle to staying disciplined and motivated is a complete lack of results. As long as you're getting SOME successes, you can stay both disciplined and motivated, but if you aren't getting any successes, staying either disciplined or motivated becomes very, very difficult.

I struggle with discipline because I look at is as being bound or restricted or lack of freedom. That combined with negative thoughts and self doubts.... when I was in school I chose not to be disciplined about it because I didn't want to miss out on anything I enjoy doing. Thank you so much. This really helped me. I recently decided I want to go to medical school- but I have been having a hard time with motivation when it comes to studying to the MCAT. I often feel like something is wrong with me and am pathetically experiencing imposter syndrome without having made it to medical school to IMPOSE on. But your concept regarding discipline and setting a concrete “why” makes so much sense. Thank you so much, I needed this 🥺
